Won 6 of the last 7, and every single time when it really matters.
Nice to have that on them. I hope they fall off a cliff and always remember a period of 'couldabeen'

Even with all our outs we still match up well on Geelong.
You expect Astbury to get Hawkins and Balta gets Cameron.
Seems Geelong will bring in Higgins which could mean Narkle goes out. So they'll be older and slower if that happens.
Like most games we've had against Geelong, if we can match/beat them in the middle then our forward line can exploit the Cats' iffy backline.

Why Tigers will have to buck the trend to win Grand Final rematch
By Michael Whiting
afl.com.au
5 May 2021
RICHMOND will have to defy its recent history to upend Geelong in Friday night's Grand Final rematch at the MCG.
Not reverse the head-to-head record – the Tigers have won six of the past seven against the Cats – but their knack of losing to the opponent they defeated in the previous year's decider.
While reigning premiers in the past 20 years have generally had the better of a Grand Final rematch, Richmond has done just the opposite.
Following their drought-breaking flag in 2017, the Tigers fell victims to Adelaide by 36 points in round two the following season.
On that occasion, Josh Jenkins and Taylor Walker bagged nine goals between them and Rory Laird ran riot with 42 disposals.
And then after dismantling Greater Western Sydney to win a second premiership under Damien Hardwick in 2019, Richmond was beaten by the Giants in round five last year by two goals, thanks largely to Toby Greene.

For the majority of this century though, the premiers have had their way, winning 12 of 20 rematches by an average of 33 points.

Beating Richmond easy in theory but harder in practice, Chris Scott says
afl.com.au/AAP
5 May 2021
"The theory around trying to play Richmond is well understood; it's the execution that's much, much harder," Scott said on Wednesday.
"They're clearly still the benchmark, even with some important players out, and they've been able to show that their system stands up.
"That's probably been their mantra for a little while.
"They would like Martin in a certain position or Prestia or Cotchin, but other guys can come in and fulfil those roles, if not quite as well then well enough to really trouble the opposition."
Despite its recent losses to Richmond, intersected by a 67-point win at the MCG in mid-2019, Scott doesn't believe Geelong has been far off the pace.
"Most times we've played them we've had a really good look," he said.
"There are some parts that we look at and, when we get the game on our terms, the next part is how do we make sure we finish the job.
"That's so easy to say and the theories are easy.
"The planning is actually relatively easy against Richmond and it tends to be against the best sides because their exposed form for a long period of time is so clear."

Round 8 preview - Richmond vs Geelong
Ben Waterworth, Max Laughton and Matt Balmer

Tigers’ burning question: Will Tom Lynch have his kicking boots on early?
It was a frustrating start for the Richmond forward in Round 7, booting five behinds before he slotted his first major. All of those came in the opening half, leaving Lynch 0.5 heading into the main break - and it came after a week where he was declared “average” by Mark Robinson. A superb third term saved the Tigers, and Lynch, but the Cats may not be as forgiving, meaning it will be mighty important for Richmond to get on the scoreboard early - especially with Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron getting things working at the other end. Lynch kicked just the one goal in both games against Geelong last year, but broke the 2019 prelim apart with five. He’ll want to be closer to the latter than the former.
Cats’ burning question: Who will try and stop Dusty?
If not for an injury to Mark O’Connor, Chris Scott’s would’ve had an obvious player to send to the Richmond superstar. It’s extremely pressing given Martin got off the chain and was judged the best player on the ground the last time the two teams met. While Martin doesn’t have a strong record against Geelong, in terms of polling in the Brownlow, he has shown an ability to be a crucial player in battles between the two teams. Without O’Connor, it will be interesting to see how the club best goes up against the Tiger, with another player potentially being given the big task.

Grand final revenge? Key Cats owe it to themselves to lift
Wayne Carey
The Age
May 7, 2021
...
Just who gets Martin will be intriguing.
As Cats coach Chris Scott said during the week, you can beat him eight out of 10 times, but he can still slaughter you.
The absence of Jake Kolodjashnij, along with Mark O’Connor who’s done some important jobs this year, means the Cats may have to look left field for Dusty’s opponent this time around.
Melbourne’s Michael Hibberd showed it is possible to quell his influence.
For Dusty, I’m looking at either Zach Tuohy or Tom Stewart. Tuohy is quick, powerful and has a bit of mongrel, but maybe not the tank to follow Martin all game.
Scott may not want to sacrifice Stewart’s intercept marking ability, but he can match Martin aerially.
While Richmond proved last week they can win without Dusty, I suspect the loss of Trent Cotchin will ramp up their reliance on him.
Still, that’s just one part of the game the Cats need to get right. For Geelong, any revenge will only come with all 22 players buying in.

HAVE THE CATS SHIFTED TACTICS ALREADY?
Foxsports
7 May 2021
While Geelong’s recent game plan has been put under the microscope, Leigh Montagna and David King believed there had already been a shift from Scott during 2021.
“I think there’s still this misconception that Geelong are playing the way they played in 2020. Certainly in the first couple of weeks they were, but in the last month they have certainly changed their style,” Montagna explained on Fox Footy’s AFL 360.
“They are evolving as a football team and are much more aggressive. They are now the No.1 handball team in the competition, they are flicking the ball around much more, they are kicking the ball longer and taking the game on. Play on percentage they’d gone from 13th to 5th, they move the ball quicker and they are looking to use the corridor more.
“They are playing more aggressive. It was the case against the Eagles and the first half against the Swans.
“Over the course of the season, Geelong are the No.1 team from moving the ball from the defensive mid zone to inside 50. It is a much more intent to go quicker, they are looking to get the ball moving much more than they have in previous year.
“When they are getting to that launch pad between 50 and 70 metres, they are attacking the top of the square and prepared to kick the ball longer.
“Their ability to stuff it around. We know it troubles Richmond, Melbourne did it. They’re evolving, not playing the slow and kick game.”
King outlined how Geelong had won all the crucial statistics during recent battles against Richmond, but simply couldn’t get it inside 50 and threaten by kicking a winning score.
“They lose six games a year and two to Richmond. Does Chris Scott change the way he plays to beat one team? Because you are going to run into them in finals,” King said.
“Richmond have won six of the last seven, in those games they (Geelong) won six clearance battles by an average of +6, so they get the game going their way.
“They smash them at contested possession, + 17, they smash them in terms of controlling the game +35 disposals in those seven games. Yet they have lost the inside battle in six of the last seven battles.
“So they get a heap of ball and they play their way and it doesn’t score and doesn’t go inside 50. And then in a ten minute window, the Tigers go bang, bang, bang and land three blows and the game is over. So change is required.”
King pinpointed one change on the field which saw Geelong guarding the corridor heavily, making teams kick long to a contest.
“I think they’ve made changes to beat Richmond. You don’t just make offensive changes, you give up something to get something,” he said.
“Without the ball… we’ve seen the role with Gryan Miers. He’s on the wind just in front of the logo, that’s a strange position, we don’t see players there. They want to force the opposition down the line.
“On the weekend this is going to be the ball that decides the match, the long ball. They were poor at this last week against Sydney and got easy opportunities out the back. They’ve been fantastic at denying opportunity.
“That’s the game this week. They’ve been waiting for this. I think they’ve embraced imperfection and taken precious out of it, they use to be really low turnover.
“In a lot of ways Geelong games were boring to watch because there wouldn’t be contest, now it lives in contest. That’s the difference. They’ve got more corridor available, it’s trending a little to how Richmond play.
“This year they are the No.1 team at winning the ball back close to their goal.”
“I think they are realising you need to take territory and play imperfect football,” Montagna added.
“We saw in that Grand Final, as soon as you miss a kick, Richmond swarm and kick a goal. They’re saying now, take territory and let’s move the game on quicker.
“They are a great contest side.”

Simple equation for us use our speed break the game open and apply plenty of pressure and intensity.Stewart needs to made accountability to.Take our chances and like last week look up in our forward 50 don't just bomb it.We need a good start to recently been very slow to work in the game.Small brigade has to lift to.
-
Agree georgie. Need a 4 qtr effort tonight as the Cats will after revenge. Geelong have gone with an older & slower side tonight (more than usual). So as you say we need to use our pace to advantage and pressure their mids, wings & half-backs into mistakes to force turnovers & deny Hawkins/Cameron easy marks. Last week Lynch marking everything covered up our small forwards still being off. They need to finally step up tonight and as you rightly pointed out not allow Stewart especially to be free on his own.
:gotigers
-
Stanley out & Ratagolea in for Geelong. Narkle their sub.
No late changes for us. Naish our sub again.
-
Weird not being at the MCG tonight
First home game in a long time I've missed
-
Anything you want to yell out at the umps just let me know WP ;D.
-
Geelong hoping to avoid body contact & outleap Nank in the ruck using Ratagolea instead of Stanley spudding it up. Expect Pickett to do a lot of ruckwork again.
-
Geelong dominating possession and territory but we look dangerous when we get it forward.
-
Pressure great that qtr. Why we're 3 goals up.
George the goals are that way :facepalm.
frees 2 - 7 ::)
-
Castagna :facepalm :rollin
-

frees 2 - 7 ::)
MT
First game I haven’t seen for years (at a party in the Philippines with no access)
You mention pressure being great .. we are being beaten clearly in tackle stats and zero tackles inside 50
Are those stats misleading?
-
First quarter was played predominantly in the Cats forward half.
-
Bad fumble by Nank, Cats take a forward and Cameron take an uncontested mark and goals
-
Cats playing keepings off and our backs getting caught out
Hawkins marks and goals
Cats within 9 points
-
Bolton's head almost ends up at PRO and the ump calls play on :banghead
-
Graham's kick touched on the line
No idea why that needed to be reviewed.
-
Umps are murdering us. Can’t bloody touch Selwood.
-
Another on to the Cats after we stuff it up on the member's wing
37-33
-
Aarts gets one back
He has 2 goals :clapping
43-33
-
You reckon we can get a free kick any time in this game? Seems very very one sided.
They can drop the ball as they please.
-
That was weak on Hawkins. Astbury won't want to watch that back
Simpson misses
Thank goodness
-
Our tackling is terrible this quarter, can’t stop the ball. That said Higgins took players in then and got caught, you guessed it. Ball up!
-
Brilliant by Rioli, shades of 2017 :clapping
Aarts gets his 3rd
15 points up
-
Have to say Bachar isn't having a good night thus fsr
-
I’ve seen Selwood throw the ball at least three times.
.......play on!
Geelong players dropping the ball or incorrect disposal
.......play on!
:banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Another bad moment by Bachar
A nothing kick back to the centre corridor
Cameron goals with 30 seconds to go
49-40
-
If we could get a free kick in the 2nd half we're half a chance.
-
I’ve seen Selwood throw the ball at least three times.
.......play on!
Geelong players dropping the ball or incorrect disposal
.......play on!
:banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
Yep the last throw by Selwood in the centre square was the most blatant one ever
-
HT
Rich: 7.7.49
Geel: 6.4.40
Let them back in that qtr
Frees = 4 - 11 :banghead
-
Hope they gassed themselves as usual.
Missing Grimes. Cameron is too fast for Astbury. Hawkins too strong for any of them. Good to see Nank dropping back and Pickett rucking more against a team without a genuine ruck.
Need a few blokes to lift a bit and be more accountable for their opponent + stop sending it down the corridor.
-
Dusty is has had it the most for us but he really hasn't imposed himself
Glad Vlastuin is back but gee we miss Grimes.
-
Allowed them to win and clear from wing and forward contests out the front when we should've killed it or won it ourselves. Sloppy by hand that 2nd qtr. Need to tidy that up.
-
Bolton poster
50-40
-
Broad drops a sitter
We gift them the 1st goal of the 3rd :banghead
-
Bolton gets it back
Great movement out of the centre
56-46
-
Jack Ross :banghead
Hang your head
-
Bloody hell we are sloooopy!
-
How do you eff that up? Seriously :banghead
-
Could we make any more errors tonight. Absolutely ridiculous U12 mistakes. Kids stuff
-
Thanks to Jack Ross' stupidity :banghead
Rohan out marks Floss and goals
56-52 :banghead
-
Our backline is getting isolated with bad matchups because we are turning it over everywhere.
-
Floodgates feel like they are about to open.
-
Few have gone missing.
I haven’t seen Castagna since he shanked it.
-
Hawkins marks and hits the post
Astbury lucky, he was clueless
-
Cats in front from Cameron's goal after we stuffed it up at HB thanks to Broads 2nd stuff up this qtr
-
Cannot win this the we're playing. Turning it over every time we go forward
-
All 3 goals from our stupidity :banghead
-
What’s broad doing. A dropped mark and then a bad kick to Graham when he had someone at the bottom of the square on his own? :banghead
Rubbish.
-
I’m not sure who is worse, us or the umps.
-
That's not only a disgraceful decision but so dangerous on Mansell
-
Stuff me, we are playing with a cake of soap. Tidy it up FFS.
-
They need to get Mansell off to check for concussion
He has muffed his last 3 contests, dropped marks, ducking hid head
-
They need to get Mansell off to check for concussion
He has muffed his last 3 contests, dropped marks, ducking hid head
Yep.
-
Dropped marks is the story tonight.
-
How many dropped marks. :banghead
We should be 5 goals ahead.
Rohan having his best game in 10 years playing more than 1 quarter of footy.
-
Deers in the headlights. All over the ground. Lynch and Riewoldt are getting schooled.
-
Another goal to them
57-65
Rioli needed to go then not step back :banghead
-
We're in strife here
-
Astbury miles off Hawkins :banghead
Hawkins goals
57-71
Need the next goal or we are goneskis me thinks
-
We're done I think they are just running harder, cleaner.
Very poor loss after being dominate early
-
If these players don't get the biggest rocket at 3qtr time I'd be surprised. Soft footy
-
Pathetic defence allowing Smith to get front and square like that
Shocking
20 points up now the Cats
-
Another dropped mark, this time Vlastuin
:help :help
We are done, where's my stuff
-
Another dropped mark :banghead
Our defenders are literally worse than the umpires.
-
Lynch dropped two sitters up forwards too. :banghead
-
Shocking by Pickett no forward 50 pressure. Stewart just strolls on by :banghead :banghead
-
That is literally dragging the ball in... Another ball up.
-
What a terrible display
Under 10s stuff these dropped marks
-
Our worst performance in a long time.
Once the tackling pressure drops we go back to the pack very quickly.
Not fit enough or something
33 points down. Game over.
-
I think the first quarter went to the head.
-
Frees 7-16... we are disgraceful but the double standards are f*cking ridiculous.
-
BT suggesting we can come back from here
Give me spell
-
Frees 7-16... we are disgraceful but the double standards are f*cking ridiculous.
Agreed. It’s a bloody joke.
Although I reckon we’ve missed more tackles and marks tonight than the umps have missed frees to us
-
Play like U10s you get what you deserve. Dropped sitters, missing targets, etc. Worst qtr we've played in a long time as far as being soft. 2016 bottom 4 crap!
-
Can't come up with one positive tonight
And no the Bolton mark wasn't a positive
-
BT suggesting we can come back from here
Give me spell
WP, it’s all about stopping people from changing the channel .. surely you understand that
-
What happened to our pressure.
We look so ordinary when we don’t bring the pressure. It’s a complete opposite to the first quarter.
I’ve never seen so many unforced mistakes Geelong aren’t even applying that much pressure.
One armed tackles don’t work.
-
BT suggesting we can come back from here
Give me spell
WP, it’s all about stopping people from changing the channel .. surely you understand that
I know but it's still an idiotic statement
-
No Cotchin to show the way. :help

When Gary Rohan kicks 4 in 3 quarters you know you've been poor.
When's the bye.
-

Geez Selwood is a protected species. Even the commentators rush to his defence.
Yep and just got gifted a free as he sucked us in
-
Rohan gets another one
That's 5 goals for this under achieving flake
57-99
-
Could lose by 90 here. Heads are down, undisciplined acts all over the place.
-
The most annoying thing about this whole game is Gary Rohan.
He bobs up each game for about 2 minutes a game. On the odd occasion he plays a 5 minute game.
Tonight we made him look like Buddy Franklin. :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Lynch and Riewoldt have had 3 marks between them.
-
Didn't think the umpire was going to pay that
Bolton goals, his 3rd
Margin down to 36 points

On par with the dropped marks tonight is the missed, broken tackles :banghead
-
Where is Dusty?
MIA this 2nd half, not that he was that noticeable in the firet
-
Medical sub activated
Edwards out
Naish in
-
Edwards done, ankle looks serious
-
We need to do something or our percentage will take a hit.
-
Hawkins goals
45 points now
I know what I want to say but won't say it
Because I'll cop it
-
Dimma’s media conference. Ohhh geese, it’s a hard game to umpire.
-
We need to do something or our percentage will take a hit.
Too late
We will be lucky to be in the 8 by the end of the round the way we are going
-
Our depth a real issue now. There is no one in the 2s worthy of a game.
I must say we've missed a second ruck.
FFS play a second ruck you idiot match committee
-
Insipid this final quarter
No fight
-
The umpire told Stewart 4 times back a metre
Why is that not 50 metres :help
-
Stewart got told 4 times to back up a meter. In the end the ump blew time off and tapped him on the shoulder... farcical.
-
Premierships aren’t won in May
-
Is Lynch instructed to not lead towards the footy?
-
He looks like he getting scragged a lot off the ball and in marking contests. But his efforts are brutal.
-
Missing Cotch, Prestia and Grimes big time
-
Our inside 50s are a joke. Seriously.
-
Jack Ross is so soft
Actually he is just plain s h I t e
-
Premierships aren’t won in May
This
-
Is Lynch instructed to not lead towards the footy?
At times Yes
Told to make a contest and bring it to ground
Working a treat isn't it?
-
13% ripped off our percentage so far tonight
-
Don't buy it this year as we are losing badly and just giving up on games
We are playing bruise free footy and making such stupid mistakes
-
Jack Ross is so soft
Actually he is just plain s h I t e
Yeah he has really been shown up playing these full games. Has literally gotten worse every year since we drafted him.
Should make way for Grimes at a minimum.
-
Our defenders have had a mare tonight. :help
Broken tackles :help
Edwards injury serious. :help
Lynch plays from behind. And when he plays in front drops sitters :help
Pressure went missing after 30 minutes. :help
Gary Rohan kicks 5 and 11 scoring involvements :help :help :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
How bad was Edwards? I left
-
Insipid just insipid
Have said before I can handle losing if we fight. Don't like it but accept it
Been no fight in the 2nd half
Club should be embarrassed, very embarrassed
-
10 goals, weak effort
-
Tigers lose fair enough, Geelong much better but seriously 21 free kicks to 10 and another week with a similar differential.
When does the club do something about this?
-
Jack Ross is so soft
Actually he is just plain s h I t e
Yeah he has really been shown up playing these full games. Has literally gotten worse every year since we drafted him.

Disgraceful effort but the real stuff happens in a few months.

That was a pathetic performance. It's that simple and some of these efforts were laughable
-
That’s hands down the worst half of footy we’ve played in 5 years. I’d say that we need to make changes, but to be honest, the cupboard is extremely bare. Bolton and Nank the only guys who had a crack. We seriously need to find some tough mids as our best guys are nearly done.

Yes agree there's nothing in the 2s except a ruck
-
Scoreline similar to Melbourne game.
Concerning.
Are we figured out/done? Struggling to maintain pressure for 4 quarters week in week out?
The diehard in me wants to believe that we identified Dees and Cats as contenders so we tried our game plan on them for 1Q and then threw the game to give them a false sense of security for the business end of the season...

More stats (via Fox Footy):
2.2-14 to 13.8-86 after half-time.
We kicked just one goal (1.1) after the 4 minute mark of the 3rd quarter.
Richmond
Q1 Q2-4
Contested possessions: +5 -38
Disposals efficiency: 81% 63%
Scores from turnovers: +18 -34
Geelong:
They kicked 8.1 transitioning from D50 .... ( i.e. 8 goals out of our forward line ).
4 of those goals were from kick-ins and going coast to coast.
3rd quarter contested possessions: +23
3rd quarter scores per Inside 50: 50% ......... so every second time the Cats went inside F50 they scored.

I’m not going to watch the replay of this game.
It was bad enough seeing Rohan standing by himself inside 50 once let alone 6 times.
I don’t want to ever see that again. :pullhair
-
Heads dropped and very little effort once the game was gone. Didn't like seeing that.
-
Scoreline similar to Melbourne game.
Concerning.
Are we figured out/done? Struggling to maintain pressure for 4 quarters week in week out?
The diehard in me wants to believe that we identified Dees and Cats as contenders so we tried our game plan on them for 1Q and then threw the game to give them a false sense of security for the business end of the season...
Wait and see I reckon. We had virtually a starting midfield watching from the stands last night, plus our most important defender. We'll be better.
-
I have noticed a drop in skills this year to many mistakes. Our system has stacked up over time , but need to further involve for me look to static.
-
Our form has been super patchy this year. The contrast between our second half v the dogs last week compared to our second half v the cats last night was astronomical. Like two completely different teams. It’s hard to draw conclusions. Are we an aging team that is declining and only capable of flashes of our old self, or are we just getting through the season and leaving some gas in the tank for the business end? I hope it’s the latter. Time will tell.
-
Gonna move Soldo to the LTI list.....tanking for the mid season draft...#cunningplan :shh

Dusty is not having the output he normally does. I feel he goes missing in games for large chunks.
Something doesnt seem right

"The Cats were very good, but the Tigers made a lot of mistakes."
Nathan Brown highlights some of the Richmond's uncharacteristic clangers.
Watch here: https://twitter.com/FootyonNine/status/1391184338453155842
1. Broad dropped mark = Geelong goal.
2. Bolton not manning up on Guthrie at HB stoppage leading to Hawkins mark and Geelong goal.
3. Mansell dropped mark = Geelong goal.
4. Pickett mistackle on Smith who goaled.
5. Vlastuin dropped mark = Geelong goal.
Browny left out 6. Broad's bad kick that lead to another Geelong goal.
That's Geelong first six goals of the third quarter.

Chris Scott has often said that Richmond have been the outlier to how flags have been won in the last decade and that most are won by teams – Hawthorn and West Coast for instance - who control ball movement.
Where Scott accords with Richmond is that when Geelong are good in the contest they win. When they are brutal and aggressive around the ball they win. On Friday they were aggressive and brutal around the contest and they won.
Scott had them primed against Richmond and they thoroughly outmuscled the Tigers around the ball, where Richmond were made to look young and small. Maybe it’s because they were. With Trent Cotchin and Dion Prestia out and Shane Edwards injured in the game, the Tigers were young and slight.
Scott dropped Rhys Stanley and chose to go in the ruck with Esava Ratugolea and Mark Blicavs. .... Still, playing Richmond it was brave to drop him when it meant it denied them Mark Blicavs being used on Jack Riewoldt. It meant Jack Henry had to take Riewoldt and Tom Stewart (who was among Geelong’s best) had Martin when he was forward. Neither had Blicavs as a get-out if Riewoldt or Martin got the better of their first choice opponents.
Scott had looked at Richmond’s rucks with Marlion Pickett as second ruck and realised they could exploit it. They grabbed the ball out of the ruck rather than hit it to ground where Pickett could act as an extra midfielder. They got an advantage and it was down to the bravery of the selection choice.

AFL Report Card: Round 8
Max Laughton, Matt Balmer and David Zita from Fox Sports
Foxsport
10 May 2021
RICHMOND
Richmond got Richmond-ed. In Tigers-Cats games, we’re used to seeing a team lead at halftime and then get overrun in the third term by intense pressure and brilliant ball movement... it’s just that it’s normally the Tigers doing it. Instead, after an excellent first quarter, the premiers never looked quite right. They were uncharacteristically fumbly and their defence was torn apart, allowing 31 scoring shots from 55 inside 50s, which is just ridiculous. We’ll say it again, we’re not worried about Richmond; but this is the fourth time we’ve had to say that after a loss in eight weeks.
In the votes
Most of the talk around Shai Bolton has been about his Mark of the Year, but he was spectacular in other ways too, kicking three goals from his 21 disposals. He’s arguably the Tigers’ best and fairest favourite right now. Shane Edwards (19 disposals, eight clearances) was Richmond’s best player according to the Official AFL Player Ratings, even though he missed the end of the game with a suspected ankle injury, while Jake Aarts’ three second-quarter goals set up their halftime lead.
Room for improvement
The Tigers weren’t at full strength, so it’s not as if we were expecting them to dominate, but they looked completely un Richmond-like in the second half. They were the ones under the pump every time they got the footy, and their backline was seriously exposed. Their leading disposal winner, Jayden Short, had just 22 while Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt combined for just 11 touches.

KING'S BIG TAKEAWAY FROM GEELONG'S WIN OVER RICHMOND
By Alex Zaia
SEN
10 May 2021
“I don’t think I’ve seen Richmond succumb to pressure and to physicality like they did on Friday night,” David King told SEN’s Whateley.
“There was a difference in that victory – this was brutal, this was 120 minutes at 200 pressure points against, and they couldn’t handle it.
“I was watching it back thinking, ‘wow, what happened to the Cats’ chip, chip, mark game? What if they played like this two years ago? What if this was the starting point?’
“When Richmond won two of the previous three flags playing like this, no one copied Richmond. No one has tried to play like Richmond. Is this the first team that’s taken that big step and said, ‘let’s put the game into turnover … let’s take territory when it’s there, let’s break tackles, let’s get wave runners going’.
“This is the first I’ve seen, and they did it better than Richmond on Friday night. Is it a missed opportunity or a new opportunity?
“I think we’re going to see Geelong play better than what they played on Friday night because this is just a small sample. Is their best going to be the best available football?”
