Title: who remembers...
Post by: sdc01 on May 15, 2022, 09:31:33 PM
i remember years ago one the best things after a win was driving home or on the train listening to the post match review on 3aw or abc etc...jumped in the car yesterday and every stuffing station was covering the same game....i feel sorry for the youngsters today as they never experienced footy at its best imo

Yep and they had talk back callers

Good times

The best was ABC talk back when Tom Hafety was doing special comments after a win.

It was brilliant listening to Tommy talk about his Tigers.  You could feel how proud he was.

Just devastating he didn't get to see any of our 3 GF wins.

The football radio service back in the 70's & 80's was really brilliant.  3AW with Harry Beitzel & Tommy Lahiff was golden, the talk back after the game was even better than the match broadcast.
Wide World of Sport on sunday morning was unmissable too!  Jack Dyer trying to kill either Lou Richards or the script (depending on which one he could catch) was priceless.  Uncle Doug set them up, the panel knocked em down!     :clapping

Who would've thought two blokes chopping through a log would be such great part of a football show?  That's World of Sports for ya!       :clapping

Coaches Corner or Club Corner should be part of a footy show on a Sunday. The coaches can get a bertocchi ham and a tosca suitcase, The AFL need to get a free to air broadcaster who will do shows like Talking Footy as well.

One day Tommy got on the line with Harry & started with "Are ya there 'arry?"  Then a loud clunk with a muffled voice later Tommy came back on saying, "I've lost me hearing aid 'arry!   Can ya hear me 'arry, cos I can't hear you!"  Then Tommy crawls around on the floor of the changing rooms with an open mic on national radio asking odd players if they've seen his hearing aid?  Eventually Tommy finds it & gets back to the job with, "I've got it 'arry, I still can't hear anything 'arry (cos the players were roaring out the team song by now) but I hope you can hear me!"

Golden stuff ...       :clapping

Tommy Lahiff on 3KZ.

"Can you hear me, Harry?"

The other thing that has disappeared is when all the games were on a Saturday arvo the scoreboard would show the scores of the other games with different letters representing each of the other teams. You needed to buy the Record to know which was which.

haha is there audio of that tommy recording?

I just miss Rex. He wasnt everyones cup of tea but i loved every bit of his antics. I've seen him a few times around here and he always loves to chat. Ripping guy.

Did anyone here used to sneak into the club rooms? That was my biggest kick i got out of going to the footy during those times, especially supporting the tigers.

It was open slather on the party pies and autographs. I recall some old bloke would always walk around with an oven on a trolley and you could pick off what you wanted.

Only thing which wasnt great was players would sign your book completely starkers in front of you.

Good times.

Listening to the radio Saturday and having 4-5 games on at a time, going around the grounds, then other commentators cutting in with scores if a game was close.

Still remember the Rex Hunt / Barrassi blow up. They got a soundbite of Ron saying 'I've had one, maybe two marijuana cigarettes' and used it repeatedly.

Rex : Oh, Ron has just joined us, where have you been?

Ron : I've had one, maybe two marijuana cigarettes

I think Ron left over this.

For the youngsters out there

Some of the old radio stations and what they are now

3DB = KIIS FM (Was DB FM when it moved from AM to FM, then became TT FM before becoming KIIS)

3KZ = Gold 104.3 (was KZ FM for a while)

3GL (Geelong radio) = K Rock

3UZ = RSN (927)

3AW is still 3AW

3LO = ABC 774

93.2 EON FM (Melb first FM station) = MMM (triple M)

Plenty of nuts at Victoria Park :yep.

I remember my first ever trip to Kardinia Park when I was a kid (early 80s) when Geelong was still like a country town. Cats fans like the extras from the movie Deliverance  :help.

Moorabbin swamp ... I mean Oval ... was always an experience too with their animal enclosure. St Kilda grannies by the fence in their members wanting to whack opposition players with their brollies if there was a fight by the boundary line: "Leave my boys alone!"

As for how clubs treated other clubs after the game, Carlton was the worst. Back in the 80s with the U19s, the home club post-game would put out party pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and drinks for both sets of players and officials (and their kids  ;D ) in the social club. Carlton was the only club who wouldn't. They wouldn't allow any opposition into the Carlton social club unless you became a paid member for the privilege .... yeah right! Just another reason to despise them.

The 80’s and especially the 90’s were great times. Footy at its purest.

Saturday afternoon footy.
U19 and reserves before the main game.
Running onto the ground at the final siren.
Esky’s were allowed so if you asked nicely they’d let you stand on them so you could see the game properly.
Local grounds ie. lakeside oval, Vic park, Junction oval, Arden st, princess park, vfl park, western oval, moorabbin, Kardinia park.
Developing ways to sneak into the members area at different grounds.
Sneaking into the club rooms after the game.
Duffle coats
20cent records
Radio commentary
Winners. World of sports.

Simpler days and great memories.

I think footy was at its purest by the 90’s when players started to get professional but coaches weren’t as smart as they are now. And when the rules were black and white and there wasn’t such a thing as prior opportunity to ruin umpire decision making for all time  :help
