Patrick Dangerfield and fellow superstar Dustin Martin will return to action as the headline acts when Geelong and Richmond face off in an AFL heavyweight battle in round 15.

Dangerfield’s return for Saturday night’s MCG showdown was confirmed by coach Chris Scott, who said the stage is set for a blockbuster clash between fourth and sixth on the ladder.

“We’re pumped because this is the first time we’ve played in Melbourne for a little while where there shouldn’t be any barriers to our fans getting up to the ground,” Scott told Fox Footy.

“We’ve played games when trains haven’t been running ... but Dustin Martin’s back, Paddy Dangerfield’s back and it’s Saturday afternoon at the ‘G, so get there Cats fans.”

“I’m really liking the Tigers. I see Robbie Tarrant has got his hand all strapped up, but I that’s not a bad thing, I don’t think Robbie’s going too well.

“No Noah Balta either, but I think the way they are moving the ball the Tigers, I think they might be too quick for Geelong.

“That’s going to be a great game, could go either way, but I’m tipping the Tigers in the form they’re in.”

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield to return, six more Cats available

Geelong Head of Medical and Conditioning Harry Taylor declared that the dangerous midfielder is set to return in time for a Saturday blockbuster against the Tigers.

Meanwhile, fellow veterans Gary Rohan and Shaun Higgins appear to be available for selection once again.

Multiple players made a return to the Cats VFL team this week for their clash against Werribee, including small forward Max Holmes, star defender Jack Henry, key forward Esava Ratugolea and youngster Nick Stevens.

Their opponents Richmond will welcome back three-time Norm Smith medallist and Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin from illness.

However, they will be likely to be without Noah Balta, Trent Cotchin and Robbie Tarrant, who all sustained injuries against the Blues last Thursday night.

Big outs for us. Mostly Balta and Cotchin.

Leaves me a lot less confident.

Think Dangerfield's cooked tho so not worried about that.

To me the Hawkins contest is the most concerning issue. The old push in the back cheat needs to be kept in his place. We need to plan well for his tactics. The Umpires always favour him and I feel that this needs to be understood. Perhaps we should find a way to accidentally knock him out Early... 😃

No, he isn't.  But if Soldo parked himself 30mtrs in front of Porkins then at least he becomes annoying!  If Porkins crashes into his back (more than once) the umpires will penalize it.  Expect Porkins to play the victim (ooh, they are blocking me) but he can't just crash into Soldo from behind (at least that's how the rules are supposed to go).     ::)

Snippets from Dimma's presser this morning (via SEN):

* We like the metrics/KPIs we're seeing. However, there's still areas in our game that need improvement (eg: 76 inside 50s for just 81 pts).

* We're playing a system based game at the moment which we like.

* Most clubs know how Geelong play. But they're so well drilled and structured it's hard to stop. If we allow them to play that structured way where they control the ball then we'll struggle. We know to win we will need to bring that pressure to upset their structure.

Geelong v Richmond Preview

Geelong and Richmond lock horns in a Saturday twilight blockbuster at the MCG.

The fourth versus sixth clash will shape the top eight come the end of Round 15.

The Cats jumped back into the top four thanks to an 18-point win over lowly West Coast in Perth last time out.

Chris Scott’s side are on a run of four consecutive wins and are positioning themselves for an all-important double chance come September.

The Tigers jumped from ninth to sixth courtesy of a 15-point victory over Carlton without superstar Dustin Martin.

With the three bye rounds now done and dusted, Richmond is one of four sides locked on eight wins and five losses.

The race for the finals spots is heating up.

A win for Damien Hardwick’s troops would see them draw level with Geelong on nine wins and significantly boost their top four chances.

Not much separates these two teams.

The midfield battle will be crucial in giving their star forwards enough supply to kick a winning score.

Tip: Geelong by 7 points.

So who gets the job on Cameron?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

A 6ft 5 Dusty’: AFL champ declares big Cat ‘clearly the best player in the game’

Fox Footy’s David King believes Jeremy Cameron is “clearly” the best player in the competition, and warns Richmond faces a tough task stopping the star Cat.

Cameron hasn’t missed a match in 2022, sitting second in the Coleman Medal race with 39 goals while averaging more than 15 disposals a game.

According to Champion Data statistics, Cameron is ranked first in the competition for both field kicking and score involvements this year.

He is also the best kick in the competition, sitting at 13% above the AFL average.

Describing Cameron as a “six-foot-five Dustin Martin”, King said the milestone man was the “most difficult match up in AFL footy”.

“I think he is clearly the best player in the game right now,” he said on AFL360.

“He’s going to take us to places we don’t want to go.

“We talk a lot about midfielders that go forward. This is a forward that goes in the midfield – it’s the reverse.

“He glides across the ground. His coasting speed holds and maintains a gap on his opponent.”

Cameron will play his 200th AFL game when he runs out against the Tigers on Saturday night.

And while King said there were areas of Cameron’s game lacking, like contested marking, he easily made up for it with his foot skills.

“He’s not a great contested marker, but the fact he’s always back at the coalface opens up opportunities for him,” King praised.

“Particularly as that midfield roaming type, that roaming high half forward type, for a six foot fiver it’s quite remarkable.

“He’s the number one score involvement player in the competition from round 2 onwards. Round 1 he got injured – he had two goals in the first 20 minutes that day.

“I just think we have to start appreciating what this guy does.”

Cameron has taken 40 marks inside 50 already this season, and sits second to only Melbourne’s Bayley Fritsch for players hitting the scoreboard from targeted entries inside 50.

“I think he’s the biggest challenge in this game on Saturday afternoon,” King said.

“He is the complete package.

“Good luck matching up on him, and good luck stopping him.”

Grimes did play in rnd 19 2021 though and we lost by 38 points.
Interesting for me any way was Cameron did not play and Ratogulea and Hawkins kicked 4 each.

Just going back 5 or so years it is quite clear they have gone taller in recent years. It has not just been Cameron they have played Ratogolea in a lot of games and he has kicked goals in most. They also now have Blicavs freed up to go with Stanley so they have the scope to go very tall on us.

They were lucky SHocking was able to fundamentally change the rules of the game before leaving the building or they would be nowhere now. Watching their H&A kick-mark possession game routinely wilt under finals pressure was a delight. Now the game has been manipulated to be less pressurized and 1/3 'contests' are decided by the umpires' whistle they are set up to play their geriatric kick-mark game ad nauseam.

They are the great exponents of poo 'modern' football.

A double edged sword.

Dry conditions will aid their tall marking forwards but it also aids our speedsters against their slower older players. Hopefully, we're a lot more efficient going inside our F50 tomorrow in drier conditions :pray.

Daisy Pearce issues warning to beware of Richmond’s ‘blind belief’ in run home to the finals

Daisy Pearce has run her sharp eye over a ‘crazy’ round of footy, and she’s revealed why she’s so excited about the Tigers.

Harrison Reid
7news.com.au
24 June 2022

Daisy Pearce has run the rule over a “crazy” AFL round 15, and she has her sights set on Saturday afternoon’s finals-defining blockbuster between Geelong and Richmond.

The rest of round 15 shapes as one of the most exciting rounds of footy in recent history, with mini finals littered throughout the fixture.

“Where do you start? It’s a crazy round,” Pearce told 7NEWS.com.au.

Pearce zeroed in on Saturday’s clash between the Cats and Tigers.

“The Geelong-Richmond game really fascinates me, and I think it’s one that will really shape the top eight,” she said.

“When you look at their numbers, Richmond are starting to get back to that brand of footy that won them the three premierships. I think if they can stay healthy – they’ve had Trent Cotchin go out, Noah Balta with a hamstring as well – and time their run for the end of the year, you’d never discount them.

“I’m someone who will believe in Richmond even when their form doesn’t quite warrant it because I just have so much admiration for them. They just have blind belief in themselves that only a very successful club has, and I think that will hold them in good stead, come finals time.

“While other teams who might be thereabouts at the pointy end start to have doubts because they haven’t been there, Richmond will have a belief that their best can get it done because we’ve got evidence of that.”

The Tigers have won six of their past seven games to storm back inside the top eight and firm as finals – and even premiership – contenders.

But Pearce says this week will be a real acid test for them.

“This is a big test for them because through a shaky start, they’ve pieced back together what looked more like that dominant Richmond we’ve all come to know,” she told 7NEWS.com.au.

“I think to test it against genuinely good opposition in Geelong is something that they’ll embrace and something that is a fascination for us looking on – how real are they? We’ll find that out.

The 2020 grand final replay is an even-money bet, with the Cats presenting a starkly different challenge to the one they offered in the grand final defeat from two years ago.

“If you think about some of the shortcomings that were there on that day and the reasons why they didn’t get it done – they’ve addressed a lot of them,” Pearce said.

“They were criticised for going too slow, but now they’ve got a game style that has gears and they can go a bit faster, which amplifies the assets they’ve got up forward in Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron. Plus, they’ve added Tyson Stengle who’s in great form and has added a new dimension of speed and creativity of flare around goal, which they didn’t have.

“I think down back too, with Sam De Koning holding up an end, it allows Tom Stewart the freedom to be able to use his speed at ground level, which was a bit of a hole, I thought, defensively, for the Cats back in 2020.”

Pearce said she wouldn’t count out any side in the top 12 for a finals berth, but has a particular watch set on 2021 grand finalists, the Bulldogs.

“They’re outside the eight and they can’t really afford to lose, but if they find a way to get in there, they could really shake it up,” she said.

“At their best, they would threaten a lot of sides. I feel like they’ve got a few pieces moving into place that might get better in the back half of the year as well, should they be able to bank enough wins.”

Campbell Brown's Round 15 predictions

Campbell Brown has handed down his verdicts for Round 15, predicting Richmond will triumph.

The Cats and Tigers have both lost just one of their last five games and head into the clash in good form, however Damien Hardwick’s side’s improvement has Brown giving them the edge.

With Richmond seeing off a strong Carlton outfit last week by 15 points, Brown designated them the “most improved side” over the last month.

“It’s a huge game and the bookies have got it pretty close and I think that’s about right, Dusty (Martin) coming back is significant for Richmond,” the former Hawk said on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“I think the Tigers, they’re the side that probably have improved the most over the last three or four weeks.

“I think Collingwood is another side in that discussion, but we’re starting to see some signs from the Tigers that we saw through their premiership era, didn’t we.

“I think Richmond (will beat Geelong) in a really close game, but you could probably flip a coin.”

CERTAINTIES FOR THE REST OF ROUND 15

Jack Makeham
SEN
25 June 2022

Geelong v Richmond

Short to have 20+ disposals and 3+ inside 50s

Jayden Short has arguably been Richmond’s best player this year.

Coming off an excellent performance in the win over Carlton last round, Short racked up 25 disposals and a ridiculous 16 inside 50s, tied for the most in AFL history.

Whilst he probably won’t repeat the hefty numbers he put up last week, Short is averaging 26.6 touches to go with 5.5 inside 50s.

Expect Short to play a key role in taking the fight to Geelong.

Cameron takes it to a top 8 side with multiple goals

Jeremy Cameron has been a scoring powerhouse this season, leading the Cats with an average three goals per game.

However, the deadly forward has yet to have a multi-goal game against a side in the top eight this season, a streak that is unlikely to last long.

He is coming off a single goal performance in the win over a competitive West Coast last week, however he has a track record of bouncing back.

Every time Cameron has been held to a single goal or less this season, he has kicked 3+ the next game.

The Tigers are sure to have their hands full with Cameron.

Geelong and Richmond then face off in a twilight MCG blockbuster, with huge top-four ramifications to follow.

Victory for the Cats could see them leap as high as second. Defeat, if the Blues win earlier in the day, could see them drop to fifth or sixth.

Only a sizeable win and results going their way elsewhere could see the Tigers head into the top four by afternoon's end, but after six victories from their previous seven games it would be another crucial step in the right direction for Damien Hardwick's team.

Defeat, on the other hand, could see Richmond drop from the top eight altogether by the end of Sunday's slate of games.

Sounds like today we're following the old adage of attack is the best form of defence. Perhaps we're going to accept Hawkins and Cameron are going to kick a few but take on the Cats both offensively the other way and defensively with pressure via our leg speed. The key of course is going to be in the middle. We can't allow them to walk through our tackles and smash us in the guts. That's what hurt us last year in both our losses to Geelong.

Sorry but I'm calling it. It's game over.

It would be one of our most famous wins if we came back from here, but I don't see it.

The AFL is corrupt and all their poo about player welfare is simply 'internal marketing' to 'key stakeholders'. That three minutes Prestia was in strife and the game continued (ending with a Geelong goal) was an absolute disgrace.

Gutsy last 10 minutes. Baker lit the fuse in the middle. Grimes, Floss and Tarrant holding up in defence against the overwhelming tide. We're going to need more freakish marks and goals from Dusty and Bolts.

Lynch and Jack need to lift. Better when they work up the ground and back.

We've got nothing to lose know as this is against the odds. Workrate and numbers is the key.

Two thing that really lost this. Soldo as the sub was just ridiculous. That three min when we were a man down and the umpires didn't stop it was also resulted in a goal and they won by less than that, game deciding.

My main takeaway is that I'm so proud of the club and I think we got jolted back into life today. This is reminiscent of going from 5-1 to 5-4 in that three week stretch in 2017. If you lose that game in a final it's heartbreaking, but tonight there are so many positives and the umpires and the corrupt AFL are not going to stop me feeling so proud and optimistic about the team.

I thought I'd feel worse but I think it will be okay now. We're back.

Same here Buddy. Courageous stuff but this loss hurts so much for so many reasons. Snipers win by being snipers with the umps getting them over the line. The last 10 mins we were out on our feet. Fatigue/brainfades couldn't hold a 17 point lead with 10 mins to go nor the regained lead with 2 mins to go. Just feel numb! This team is good enough to win the flag but doing so from outside the top 4 is unlikely  :(. Pretty much need to win all 8 games from here.

We let yer another game slide. That’s 4 now due to our leaders doing sfa when we needed them.

I’m critical of the umpires but tonight was on another level. Blatant holding the ball or incorrect disposals not paid to us. Lynch was held and a ragged in every contest and was even in a headlock competing for a loose ball and still nothing. I’d love to see stats on frees paid to all key forwards because he gets NOTHING. I also that the free against him when Jack took that hanger was more likely to go his was as DeKonig only had eyes for Lynch and was holding him.

Hate to be super critical of a kid

But that contest in the final qtr half way between centre wing and the Cats F50 when Gibcus punched the ball towards the centre rather the boundary was super costly. They got a goal and momentum

He will learn from it but gee it was so costly. In those situations you play the percentages and punch for stoppage or boundary not into the centre corridor

Ditto the Ross kick that dribbled along the ground

Yep me too. No expectations with the team all year and did not expect to win this one.But the way they dug in and the circumstances  the  had me thinking poo Claw maybe there is another one in em.
Ultimately we lost and straight after the game they could have nuked the whole town of Geelong and i would not have given a stuff.
But ya know kudos to them most teams would have been overrun but this time they found a way to stay in it and fortunate or not win it.
End of the day thats also a sign of a good team.

Two yrs ago likely we would have just ran over them but it is no longer 2019 or 2020 we like them are ageing,.

David Zita, Ben Waterworth and Catherine Healey

27 June 2022

RICHMOND

So close, yet so far. Despite a slow start, Richmond kicked 10 of 12 goals during a stunning run across the second to fourth quarters against a tough Geelong outfit to open up a 17-point final quarter lead. But down a midfielder after Dion Prestia was subbed out, the Tigers ran out of legs late as the Cats stormed home to take the four points. Coach Damien Hardwick described it as a “heartbreaking” loss, for the Tigers lost no admirers on the weekend.

In the votes

Liam Baker was a game-changer in the second and third terms, shifting to the midfield and sparked the Tigers stuff. He finished with 24 disposals — 14 of those contested — seven clearances, eight inside 50s and three intercepts. Shai Bolton was everywhere against the Cats and finished with 3.2 from his 14 disposals. Bolton was shifted deep in the forward line to draw Mark O’Connor one-on-one. Dylan Grimes racked up 12 intercepts, while Toby Nankervis took four intercept marks and finished with 22 disposals after being asked to ruck solo at the start of the game. Robbie Tarrant’s job on Tom Hawkins was impressive.

Room for improvement

As inspiring as Richmond’s comeback was, the fact it coughed up a 35-point lead in the first half ultimately proved costly. The Tigers also lost the contested ball count by -23. Individually, Jack Riewoldt failed to fire against the Cats, finishing scoreless from seven touches, while Dustin Martin was down on his high standards. First-year players Josh Gibcus and Judson Clarke were quiet.

I think we lost this game in the third quarter - We played brilliantly - the best I have seen this year , however it should have been an 8 or 9 goal quarter - such was our dominance.

Great post. Lynch, Bolton and Dusty all missed sodas. Pickett should’ve been given a 50 when 55 out and Baker had his head ripped off 30m out directly in front.
