Since rnd 10 when they lost to Geelong Port have been in a lot of ways very similar to us. Since that game they have lost 5 and won 4 but their biggest losing margin has been 14 points.
Like us it seems they have been in every game  they have played since rnd 10. It is over their and they will be looking for a scalp and it won't be easy.
Give up a 42 point lead in Adelaide and there won't be any coming back.

We have everything to play for. They don't.

So I expect to lose.

I'm not confident. We are so inconsistent in our application this year that I never expect us to bring a minimum level of effort anymore, and I think Port will always want to beat us up after the 2020 prelim. They will enjoy hunting us with the pressure off.

Tough ask this week. Some chance Boak won't play with his broken hand - even if he does play he'll surely be hampered.

Port Adelaide v Richmond preview

Alex Zaia
SEN
5 August 2022

Richmond kept its season alive courtesy of a stunning come-from-behind win over Brisbane last week.

Trailing by as much as 42 points, the Tigers staged a stirring stuff to snatch a seven-point victory to stay in touch with the top eight.

With three winnable games to finish their home and away campaign, Richmond remains in the finals hunt.

Victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday night could see them move into the eight by the end of the round.

The Power’s finals chances are all but over following last week’s six-point loss to Collingwood, their third consecutive defeat.

Port (8-11) sits 12 points behind eighth-placed St Kilda with three games remaining.

Coach Ken Hinkley conceded his side hasn’t played well enough to warrant a finals spot.

“Are we good enough to compete with the best teams in the competition? That is clear, we are,” Hinkley said after the Magpies loss.

“But we haven't been good enough to play finals this year.”

The last three games between these two clubs have all been tight contests.

Damien Hardwick’s side won by 12 points at the MCG earlier this year, but lost to the Power by two points in Adelaide early in 2021.

Richmond’s season has been a topsy-turvy one, but are they hitting form at the right time?

Tip: Richmond by 11 points.

He's probably just not having a great year but this year I don't see a lot to get excited about.

I would take him because we have basically no forwards but he's not the type of be trying too hard to trade in.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 21

Alex Zaia
SEN
5 August 2022

Port Adelaide v Richmond

Wines to finish with 20+ disposals

The reigning Brownlow Medallist continues to rack up big numbers.

Wines is averaging 27 disposals per game in 2022 and is coming off a 30-disposal performance against Collingwood last week.

The Power star collected 26 touches and five clearances against Richmond earlier this year.

Wines and co will look to put a dent in the Tigers’ finals hopes.

Bolton, Riewoldt and Lynch to kick a goal each

The trio combined for eight goals in Richmond’s come-from-behind win over Brisbane last week.

Lynch booted four majors while Riewoldt and Bolton kicked two each to help the Tigers come from 42 points down to keep their finals chances alive.

The latter dazzled with 12 score involvements and could’ve had a bigger day in front of goal had it not been for inaccurate kicking.

They could prove a handful for Port Adelaide’s defence on Saturday night in what is a must-win match.

For us to win tonight we need big games from the likes Graham and Ross tonight. Graham in particular has been ordinary lately and needs to lift... Plus Nankervis needs a good game and we need him to take contested marks around the ground. Good luck Tigers.

Yeah that's the one. From 3 and 10, dead and buried, to 12 and 10 and finals. In 2014 that was the most spectacular thing I'd ever seen a Richmond side achieve. Back from the dead! They did us proud that day. :gotigers

My favourite part of this video is around 3:40: Richo is in the commentary box at Adelaide oval and lets out a little yelp (squeal?) of delight when Martin kicks the sealer. Just couldn't contain it.  :rollin

What a ride it's been since then--simpler times when just making finals meant everything. Makes me realize that we don't have to go all the way this year, just show some heart and get everyone pumped like we did back then. Looking to Cumberland, Sonsie, MRJ, Miller etc for those moments.

Play 4 quarters we win simple as that have a first half like last week no chance need to take our chances , ramp it up show hunger , pressure like in our flag years and no passengers.

x2.

Yep, we need to bring the pressure across the park and match/beat them in the contested footy which is Port's one wood. We can't have a repeat of last year where after getting ourselves up for and beating Brisbane in Jack's 300th, we brought zero intensity the following week against Geelong and the game was over at half-time.

A few concerns that have been around for a while.
1. Our pressure. Think our AVG age probably has a fair impact on this. However seeing guys like Sidebottom and Pendles pressure till last minute last night shows that this isn't an excuse it's a choice.

2. Our ball use from half back. Rioli is so important to us. We haven't replaced the brilliance of Houli. Rioli goes close but he needs help with rebounding. Short now plays a weird midfield role. Broad hasn't been rebounding as much he was start of the year. Our ball use in transition and decision making has been really off.

Happy to be leading but another game we should be hurting the scoreboard way more.

Too many witches hats and poor execution, wow, some of the skill errors you would give a spray to an under 12 team. We can't even nail a handball, passes scewing off the boot, missing by metres. If we could execute our inside 50 entries we would be up by 30. Same ole same ole, heaps of forward 50 entries just wasted with poor decision making and atrocious skills.

MRJ leading our pressure (19) and tackles (4)

The rest of them could take his lead
Port slicing and dicing us through the middle.

We need to pull out the digit. It’s a real shame how far we have lost our way. It’s supposed to be our one wood.

Getting burnt on the outside with uncontested footy (-19) against Port who are primarily an inside ballwinning team shows how off our pressure is. Pickett who has been good this year needs a rocket at half-time. Just 3 possies in a half from a wingman means he isn't working hard enough. Mind you he has a fair few teammates in that department. Most of the team needs a kick up  the backside.

ps. Fox Footy showing Lynch being continually bumped off the ball before the ball arrives yet no frees at all. It would be different if he wore a Geelong jumper  ::).

George is just a rubbish type player that has the worst skills in the league by a county mile.

Miller marks 40 out. However, he sprays it so badly it bounces 25m away from the goals for a throw-in  :P.

Disgraceful that no Tigers were forward of Miller especially on the goal line. Lucky it went over the boundary line so it stayed in our F50.

3/4 time

Richmond   4.4    7.6    14.10-94
Port Adel.   3.1    6.4      9.6-60

Goals: Lynch 4, Bolton 3, D.Rioli 2, Cumberland 2, Riewoldt, Ross, M.Rioli

Dominant quarter overall which we needed but (yeah this is probably harsh) there's still the dumb stuff (missing easy goals or letting the ball over the back into D50) which is the schoolboy crap we need to cut out of our game.

With most players you can find one thing about them that is elite or decent or looks very promising.

Things like skill by foot or quick hands or excellent evasive skills or great poise or clean off the ground or is excellent overhead mark or he doesn’t panic or he’s good in traffic etc etc.

I don’t have anything I can think of that I can say for Ross and it goes without saying how deficient Castagna is.

Really good team effort with some obvious standouts.

Looking forward to watching the replay

Some interesting comments around Castagna in defence. Clearly things have a tendency to look different on TV compared to live at the ground but I thought he was OK when he went back to help out. Certainly wasn't great but was OK. Defensively his pressure around the contests was better than it has been

Liked Miller as 2nd ruck gave us alot of mobility around the ground. It is something worth persisting with.

We head home with the 4 points, a spot in the 8 and ours to keep if we keep winning. No excuses from here

Castagna wasn't criticised because people watched on TV. It's because people have PTSD.

Aside from that kick for goal in the 3rd which was an utter disgrace, George was okay. By God would I hate to receive a handball from him though, he fires in wobblers at your nuts. Great endeavour, world's worst skills

Will sound strange we had a win over there but i thought we were ordinary in a lot of ways and the stats won't show it this week but some were ordinary as well.

First half we looked complacent but second half we steamrolled them. Personally I think it should have been 50+ points

Apart from the 2014 EF, Has Robbie Gray ever played a good game against us ?

He's played against us 19 times (equal second most in his career). Yet his disposal average is the lowest against us and he's only kicked 26 goals (1.4 per game).

Only 6 games stand out and only one of them has been in the past six seasons:
R10, 2011  4 goals                       Port won
R17, 2014  4 goals                       Richmond won
EF, 2014    25 disposals, 1 goal      Port won
R8, 2015   28 disposals, 1 goal      Richmond won
R15, 2016  24 disposals, 1 goal     Port won
R11, 2020  22 disposals, 3 goals   Port won

Great games from Bolton, Prestia and Cotchin. Daniel Rioli continues his great season. I hope for Daniel he wins the best and fairest this year.

Report Card: Round 21

RICHMOND

The Tigers will be a real threat if they can hang on to eighth place and lock in a finals berth. They showed they have weapons in attack with Tom Lynch and Shai Bolton enjoying a night out in Adelaide. Richmond racked up 62 inside 50s and 45 clearances away from home and finished +31 in the contested ball count. A number of players put their bodies on the line in the must-win game to ensure they remain alive in season 2022.

In the votes

Shai Bolton was the player of the match, and could have finished with an absolute bag of goals if not for his inaccuracy. He still ended up with an equal career high of four goals, but also landed five behinds. Tom Lynch was devastating in attack as he racked up 4.1 from his 16 disposals. Dan Rioli also showed what he is capable of if needed in attack with two goals in his 25 disposals. Fox Footy’s David King believes Dion Prestia is the key to Richmond’s success in 2022 after he collected 32 disposals and 10 clearances.

Room for improvement

The Tigers didn’t have a match up for big Charlie Dixon when he was deep in the square. And that could be a concern for Richmond heading into the final two rounds. Marlion Pickett had a quiet night with just the eight disposals, but even he silenced the crowd with a brilliant goal from the boundary. Nathan Broad coughed up two goals from two defensive errors. The first when he punched the ball through for a behind and was penalised, and the second for insufficient attempt to keep the ball in play inside his defensive 50.

Grade

A+

R11, 2020  22 disposals, 3 goals   Port won

He won them that game in 2020. He is a gun player who may have gone on a season too long.

But certainly we've put the effort to get the match up right on him

He should have cost them the game when he deliberately rushed the ball from outside the square.  But oh no Jacob Mollison must have applied some umpire 'common sense' to not pay what was clearly a free kick under the rules.   No different to the one paid against Broad.
