Two weeks left, 13 teams still in the hunt — who’s playing finals? AFLW Run Home
Max Laughton
Fox Sports
October 17th, 2022
6. RICHMOND (6-2, 134.9%)
To play: GWS at Mildura Sporting Precinct, North Melbourne at Arden Street
Analysis: On the longest winning streak in the league, the Tigers look almost certain to play finals for the first time, having already won twice as many games as they’d won in a season before this one. If they beat GWS they’ll be in a strong position to host a final - and if North Melbourne loses to Collingwood as well, it’d be assured. Either way the final-round clash with the Kangaroos will be critical for finals seeding, and could result in an elimination final rematch. (Which they probably don’t want.) And there’s even a slight chance the Tigers could pinch a top four spot from Collingwood (since the Pies have a tricky last two weeks).
Prediction: Go 1-1, finish sixth
----------------------------------
PREDICTED WEEK 1 FINALS
First Qualifying Final (1st hosts 4th): Brisbane Lions host Collingwood
First Elimination Final (5th hosts 8th): Geelong hosts North Melbourne
Second Elimination Final (6th hosts 7th): Richmond hosts Western Bulldogs
Second Qualifying Final (2nd hosts 3rd): Melbourne hosts Adelaide Crows

6. Richmond
24 points (six wins, two losses), 134.9 per cent
Six wins on the trot and counting, the Tigers just keep finding ways to win. Coming home they must face a 12th-placed GWS side that continues to be hit by injury, and then a barnstorming North Melbourne side that will be determined to finish the season with strength. Richmond has confirmed its place in finals for the first time, but pushing for the double chance or a home final is still on the cards.

I think Geelong play Adelaide or the pies this week. Only way I see us making top4 is if the cats win and we belt the giants by enough to overtake the cats on %. Then ofcourse we’ll need to beat north in the final game of the season.

Geelong play the Swans in the last round and should win easily. I can't see us bridging them on % if they win both of their games. We need Adelaide to beat the Cats and then Collingwood to lose to both North and Brisbane. That's of course relying on us beating both GWS and North.

Richmond v Greater Western Sydney Preview:
Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
21 October 2022
In the first AFLW game in Mildura, Richmond will be on a mission to continue its six-game winning streak, while Greater Western Sydney will be focused on ending it. Courtney Wakefield looks likely to be the most dangerous player on the ground after a four-goal performance last week and a Giants' defence that is without its go-to lock down defender in Pepa Randall. If GWS allows Richmond quick entries with its defenders isolated in one-on-ones, it may just be a long afternoon for Giants fans.
Both sides are averaging their second-lowest score since joining the AFLW, Richmond with 29.5 points per game, and GWS with 25.8. Where they vary, however, is that Richmond's stingy defence has effectively won it games this season, as it is conceding just 21.9 points each week - half of what the side was conceding last season. GWS is still allowing its opposition to kick nearly seven goals per game, leading to its poor percentage of just 62.4.
Tip: The Tigers will make it seven in seven weeks. Richmond by 20 points.

Adelaide beat Geelong tonight by two points. Shame it wasn't a draw as that would've been a massive bonus for us.
So, if we can win on Sunday we move up to 5th [ touchwood :pray ].

---------------------------------------------------------
RICHMOND star Monique Conti has put in another dazzling display to help her side surge into the AFLW top four with a 43-point hammering of Greater Western Sydney.
Conti shone in wet and windy conditions, kicking three goals from a game-high 23 disposals as the Tigers posted a 9.4 (58) to 2.3 (15) victory in Mildura.
The margin gave Richmond a massive percentage boost that lifted it above Collingwood into fourth spot with one round left to play.
It was the Tigers' seventh straight win, extending their club-record streak after they managed a total of six victories in their previous three seasons in the competition.
Conti was a class above, calm in traffic and busy around contests, and laid a game-high eight tackles.
The 22-year-old midfielder had plenty of assistance from capable teammates, with Grace Egan (19 disposals, one goal) and Jess Hosking (18, one) both influential.
Gabrielle Seymour (16 disposals) was busy and Stella Reid kicked two goals, while defender Bec Miller made a successful return after five weeks out with a hamstring injury.
The Tigers made use of a stiff breeze to build a 26-point lead by quarter-time on the back of a 13-0 differential in forward entries.
The Giants only trimmed margin by eight points in the second term and Richmond made them pay in the third, with two Conti goals putting the result beyond doubt.
Neither side managed to score into the wind until the final term, when Brennan kicked a behind before setting up a goal for local star Courtney Wakefield.
Alyce Parker (18 diposals, one goal) was the Giants' best, while captain Alicia Eva (13) battled away despite requiring treatment on a right foot injury early in the match.
Tigers' finals spot all but locked in
Richmond has one hand on a finals berth with just one round remaining in the home and away season. Richmond has never made finals before in its four AFLW seasons, and its improvement this season is stratospheric. After losing the first two rounds of the season, Richmond has found a new gear and won seven games on the bounce - including an upset win over ladder-leading Brisbane. While the win against the Giants propels the Tigers into the top four, there's still a mathematical possibility the Tigers could slide out of finals contention in the final round, such is the nature of this AFLW season.
Up next
The Tigers finish their season off against the red-hot North Melbourne on Sunday, while the Giants take on Gold Coast at home later that day.

TIGERS CLINCH FINALS AND CLOSE TO TOP FOUR
Jason Phelan
Foxsports
24 October 2022
Surging Richmond has a top-four finish in its grasp after three goals to Monique Conti helped the Tigers make it seven wins on the trot with a 44-point demolition of Greater Western Sydney on Sunday.
Ryan Ferguson’s side adapted better to the blustery conditions at Mildura Sporting Precinct and improved to a 7-2 win-loss record to replace Collingwood in fourth spot on the ladder with one round left in the home-and-away season.
A double chance would be fitting reward for the barnstorming Tigers, who had only won six games in three seasons heading into this AFLW campaign, and will play finals for the first time in the club’s history.
Conti was the driving force for Richmond with a game-high 23 possessions to go with her trio of goals, but she had plenty of willing helpers with Jess and Sarah Hosking, Grace Egan and Ellie McKenzie all prominent.
Richmond can cement a top-four finish with a win against fellow finalist North Melbourne at Arden Street on Sunday.
Alyce Parker toiled hard for her 18 touches, but it was a disappointing day for the Giants on the back of last week’s win over Hawthorn, with Cam Bernasconi’s side set to finish the season without once managing to put together back-to-back wins.
WHACKY WIND
The windy conditions made for some odd stats across the first half.
The Tigers had first use of the breeze and used it with devastating effect to surge to a 26-point quarter-time lead over the scoreless Giants.
Richmond went inside attacking 50 13 times in the opening term, while the Giants didn’t register an inside 50 and barely managed to move the ball into their forward half.
Egan’s goal from 45m out gave a good indication of the strength of the breeze, with her high right-foot snap sailing through post high.
With the wind at her back, Jess Hosking banged through just the second goal of her 47-game career and Stella Reid threaded the eye of the needle from the boundary line for her second goal after the quarter-time siren.
GWS registered the first seven inside 50s of the second quarter, but failed to make the most of the breeze.
The Giants won the inside 50 count 11-2 for the term, but while they kept Richmond scoreless, they managed just one goal to Parker to trail by 18 points at the main break.
CONTI STRIKES
The Giants did well to restrict Richmond after the restart, but Conti’s class shone through again.
The three-time All Australian swooped on a loose ball and her running shot from 52m out carried the pack and bounced through for a goal shortly after Katie Brennan nailed her set shot.
Conti then drew a free kick shortly before three-quarter time and coolly converted her shot after the siren to make it a 37-point margin.
In a measure of how well her day was going, Conti’s only blunder still resulted in a goal in the last quarter.
The star midfielder kicked her set shot into the player on the mark, but she drew a free kick for high contact as she scrambled to recover the ball and booted her third.
Coupled with Courtney Wakefield’s final term major, the Tigers kicked two goals into the teeth of the wind, while all the Giants scores came with the aid of the breeze.

Grace Egan has made Monique Conti a better player
It's common knowledge that Monique Conti is a star and that her full-time dedication to AFLW this season has seen her improve, but the addition of Grace Egan to that midfield mix has been just as important. No longer does Conti have to be the one in and under at every stoppage, instead she can now rotate with Egan and become more damaging with the ground she gains and scoreboard impact. Together they won 42 disposals, 13 tackles and 710 metres gained against the Giants, going a long way to the Tigers' surge into the top four.

Which makes it even more annoying that we didn't pre-list her as one of our VFLW players from the get go. Instead keeping the pick that we ultimately used on Molan
But Greg (that's her nickname) is here now and that's all that matters

Has anyone done the math on the percentage if both Pies & us lose to make the top 4? Pies play Brisbane.

I refuse to watch , but people I rate as having some idea think that the North player is the best player in the comp
Good on the Kangas for sticking up for her IMO
The mens side sure as poo has zero to be excited about

Damo, the Tiges are good to watch, give it a go. Over 150 tackles laid vs the Gold Coast a few weeks ago.
Honestly mate, the girls tackling is miles above the mens team. It’s a pleasure to watch. Conti is a stuff, beautiful to watch.
Sure, the depth drops off pretty quickly but there’s plenty worth watching.

Garner is a very good player, one of the best in the comp
But having followed the comp since started so I've been watching Conti since then and I still reckon she's the best on the comp
Was after season 2 and still is as we near the end of season 7

Tigers remain composed in wet and windy Mildura to climb into top four

Star midfielder Monique Conti was at the forefront of Richmond’s attacking brilliance. She kicked three goals in an outstanding performance where she also collected 24 disposals, and laid eight tackles.
Fellow midfielders Grace Egan and Jess Hosking were also able to make their way forward and add a goal each to the tally.
Speaking exclusively with The Inner Sanctum after the game, youngster Stella Reid mentioned how important the trio were when pushing up from midfield to contribute on the scoreboard, especially Conti who was so dominant in this area.
“Our midfield groups is full of guns, and they can just score,” the forward said.
“You can see it at training with them, they’re not just focusing on their midfield game, they’re focusing on practicing goals on the run from centre bounces and everything. They’re just working as a really good unit.”
“Mon’s just an absolute star. Her ability to hit the scoreboard, but then [also] her tackling pressure and being able to work from the contest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other player like that.”
Reid herself also had a brilliant day in front of goal, slotting two crucial majors in the first quarter to give the Tigers significant breathing room early on.
The 19-year-old mentioned how she is finding consistency in her game, and that she thinks she can continue to impact in the future.
“Playing more and more senior footy just gets you to build on that confidence,” she said.
“The coaches have trusted me to play where I believe, and play off instincts, so that’s definitely helped my game. [Also] just being accurate in front of goal, we’re out there for hours on end before training so everyone is improving and learning from one another.”
Also among the goalscorer were the usual suspects, the aforementioned captain Brennan, and hometown hero Courtney Wakefield.
Growing up on her family’s farm at Top Hut, and working extremely hard to pursue a football career, it was a special moment when Brennan sent the ball to Wakefield and she slotted a goal in front of her family and friends in the first ever AFLW game at the Mildura Sporting Precinct.
Reid spoke about Wakefield’s journey, and how important she has been for the group in their rise up the ladder this season.
“I can’t even comprehend [her story]. She was driving, at one stage, two times a week from Top Hut which is about a six or seven hour drive, and she just puts her all into the team,” she explained.
“She’s absolutely pivotal to our program. You see down here in Mildura, the amount of love and support she has and that’s definitely warranted because she’s an amazing person. I’m so glad she’s getting some reward for all her hard work.”
Sitting in fourth place with one game left to go in the home and away season, Reid explained what Richmond’s big win in Mildura has done for the side going into the final round of the season, where a top four spot will be on the line.
“The atmosphere is absolutely incredible down here in Mildura, it’s just reinvigorated us. The support down here is absolutely amazing,” she said.
“[The win] gives us massive confidence. The belief this group has in one another is just phenomenal.”
