Two weeks left, 13 teams still in the hunt — who’s playing finals? AFLW Run Home

Max Laughton
Fox Sports
October 17th, 2022

6. RICHMOND (6-2, 134.9%)

To play: GWS at Mildura Sporting Precinct, North Melbourne at Arden Street

Analysis: On the longest winning streak in the league, the Tigers look almost certain to play finals for the first time, having already won twice as many games as they’d won in a season before this one. If they beat GWS they’ll be in a strong position to host a final - and if North Melbourne loses to Collingwood as well, it’d be assured. Either way the final-round clash with the Kangaroos will be critical for finals seeding, and could result in an elimination final rematch. (Which they probably don’t want.) And there’s even a slight chance the Tigers could pinch a top four spot from Collingwood (since the Pies have a tricky last two weeks).

Prediction: Go 1-1, finish sixth

----------------------------------

PREDICTED WEEK 1 FINALS

First Qualifying Final (1st hosts 4th): Brisbane Lions host Collingwood

First Elimination Final (5th hosts 8th): Geelong hosts North Melbourne

Second Elimination Final (6th hosts 7th): Richmond hosts Western Bulldogs

Second Qualifying Final (2nd hosts 3rd): Melbourne hosts Adelaide Crows

6. Richmond

24 points (six wins, two losses), 134.9 per cent

Six wins on the trot and counting, the Tigers just keep finding ways to win. Coming home they must face a 12th-placed GWS side that continues to be hit by injury, and then a barnstorming North Melbourne side that will be determined to finish the season with strength. Richmond has confirmed its place in finals for the first time, but pushing for the double chance or a home final is still on the cards.

The run home
RD9: GWS at Mildura Sporting Precinct
RD10: North Melbourne at Arden Street

I think Geelong play Adelaide or the pies this week. Only way I see us making top4 is if the cats win and we belt the giants by enough to overtake the cats on %. Then ofcourse we’ll need to beat north in the final game of the season.

Geelong play the Swans in the last round and should win easily. I can't see us bridging them on % if they win both of their games. We need Adelaide to beat the Cats and then Collingwood to lose to both North and Brisbane. That's of course relying on us beating both GWS and North.

Richmond v Greater Western Sydney Preview:

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
21 October 2022

In the first AFLW game in Mildura, Richmond will be on a mission to continue its six-game winning streak, while Greater Western Sydney will be focused on ending it. Courtney Wakefield looks likely to be the most dangerous player on the ground after a four-goal performance last week and a Giants' defence that is without its go-to lock down defender in Pepa Randall. If GWS allows Richmond quick entries with its defenders isolated in one-on-ones, it may just be a long afternoon for Giants fans.

Both sides are averaging their second-lowest score since joining the AFLW, Richmond with 29.5 points per game, and GWS with 25.8. Where they vary, however, is that Richmond's stingy defence has effectively won it games this season, as it is conceding just 21.9 points each week - half of what the side was conceding last season. GWS is still allowing its opposition to kick nearly seven goals per game, leading to its poor percentage of just 62.4.

Tip: The Tigers will make it seven in seven weeks. Richmond by 20 points.

Adelaide beat Geelong tonight by two points. Shame it wasn't a draw as that would've been a massive bonus for us.

So, if we can win on Sunday we move up to 5th [ touchwood :pray ].

The top 4 has opened up for us thanks to North knocking off the Pies.

In our own hands now to make it happen if we're good enough.
