Biggie is first ruck today.
In the centre square with Dow, Sonsie & McDonagh.
-
Trezise at HB kicks it 15m straight to a Southport player and gifts them a goal :P.
0 - 6
-
Good transition from defence. Clarke's switch-kick to the fat side to Hicks opened up the ground. Gets to Biggie whose long weighted kick to Cumberland is perfect. Noah goes in board to Meville directly in front 25 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6

Ump pulls a free out of thin air for Southport directly in front. Another gift.
6 - 12
The ruck is the problem today with no Soldo or Samson. Southport's ruckman is a man mountain and is giving the Sharks first possession at the centre clearances.
-
We finally don't turn it over by foot through the middle of the ground.
Cumberland breaks out of the tackle at HF and kicks to the fat side pocket. Ends up with Olden. Misses.
7 - 15
We're only going at 25% efficiency inside F50. Hardly any talls today (just Bradtke) is meaning we are having to overpossess the ball and no go direct.
-
On transition from defence. Bravo breaks free and hits Cumberland 45 out. Goal! :gotigers

We actually get the centre clearance :o. Biggie taps to Street who kicks inside 50. From the pack contest, gets outside to Bravo who goals :gotigers.

Teal takes the saving mark in defence. Switches to the fat side. Mansell to El Nour who plays on to McDonagh just inside 50. Chips to Hicks who is closer to goal. Set shot misses though.

Siren for QT.

Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
Southport 2.5-17
Goals: Cumberland, Bravo, Melville.
First 10-15 minutes looked like it was going to be a dirty day due to our lack of height across the park. However, we started winning the ball in the contests and applied good tackling pressure to keep the ball mostly in our forward half for repeat entries.

Aside from the third quarter, we were the better team across the other three quarters.
Mansell our best for mine. Stood up when it mattered, worked hard defensively and offensively and actually not only used the ball well but creatively as well :o. He had the equal most possies (25 along with Brown & Sonsie) plus 5 tackles and two goals.

-
How did brown go? Looked like a straight fwd replacement for Bauer since he spent his 5mins behind the ball in his debut. Hoping brown gets a run in the seniors soon. His numbers at vfl level look a lot more consistent this season.
-
Yep… and they still won despite
-
They know how to win the close ones - unlike the seniors under Hardwick.
-
Mansell should be in the senior line up. Has proven himself as a solid contributor and no one can question his toughness. Isn’t soft like most fringe players nowadays.
I would also be getting games into Biggie. So much upside compared to Slowmo Soldo who hasn’t been the same since Hawkins pushed him in the back and injured his knee.

Be careful judging him by stats.
He gets many of his registered stats from taking kick outs from fullback once you kick it from outside the goal square

Ah I see. I did watch one game I think 3 weeks ago where he was great but yeah I don’t get around to watching too many vfl games so for the most part I’m only seeing the stats.

Brown was solid today in his usual role as an interceptor and distributor behind the ball. Others were more influential on the game IMHO. Brown's close to a senior call up but there's not really an open spot for him at the moment. Unless we suffer an injury to one of our intercepting defenders then I don't see him coming into the AFL side. Maybe only if our season is shot with a round or two to go and we're in the playing the kids mode.

VFL Tigers storm home against Southport
Richmond VFL booted seven of the final eight goals to win a seesawing encounter against Southport on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
By Richmond Media
15 July 2023
Richmond VFL have bounced back from last week's surprise loss to Sydney with an impressive away victory in Southport on Saturday afternoon.
With the scoring timeline having peaks and troughs not too dissimilar to tonight's high alpine stage in the Tour De France, it was the Tigers who broke away from late in the third quarter to claim the seesawing encounter.
After conceding the opening seven goals of the third quarter to Southport, the Tigers responded with seven of the final eight goals of the game to record a 13-point win, with final scores reading 15.8 (98) to 12.13 (85).
Rhyan Mansell returned from suspension with a 25-disposal, five-tackle performance, as well as kicking two classy goals at crucial times. He was just behind second-year players Tyler Sonsie (27 disposals, six clearance, three tackles, one goal) and Tom Brown (26 touches, two clearances) as the Tigers' leading ball-winners.
Kaelan Bradtke made the most of the opportunities he created in front of goal with strong marking and bodywork, kicking three goals straight, while Noah Cumberland was again lively, booting two goals and being involved in setting up others to Brad Melville and Moey Yassine.
Bigoa Nyuon was the dominant player on the ground in the second quarter. In the absence of Ivan Soldo and Samson Ryan, his partnership with Sonsie and Thomson Dow in the middle saw the Tigers accelerate towards the half-time break. As the siren sounded for the long change, Nyuon marked and kicked truly to give the visitors a 21-point lead, and finished the game with 18 disposals, ten marks and six inside 50s.
Former Gold Coast Sun big man Brayden Crossley must have taken that personally, though, as he led the Sharks to a near-unassailable lead in the third term. Crossley was imperious in the ruck and around the ground with a goal, Jacob Dawson and Boyd Woodcock won plenty of the ball, but it was Jake McQueen (three goals) and Fraser Thurlow (two goals) who were proving to be difficult to stop from capitalising on the scoreboard.
As Thurlow suffered an injury late in the third quarter, the Tigers showed what they had in their previous interstate trips this season - they will fight until the end.
Cumberland, Mansell and Dow provided the spark with three quick, well-taken goals on the verge of the final break.
Jack Sexton opened the scoring in the final term as Southport re-established a ten-point lead, before Yassine, Matt Coulthard, Bradtke and Judson Clarke piled on four goals in less than eight minutes to seal an incredible win for the Tigers.
The only sour note of the match for Richmond was a leg injury to Garrett McDonagh in the final stages of the last quarter, that saw the 27-year-old on crutches post-game.
The VFL Tigers host Box Hill at the Swinburne Centre next Saturday morning in what shapes as a crucial clash for both sides as they approach the final month of the season.

Would have thought he plays the same roll that they had Bauer playing? Although admittedly not with the flexibility to roll him fwd.

I think it was Balmey the other day that said Bauer was brought into the seniors to play as a 2nd tall forward despite his first two possies being on the wing (before injurying his hammy). In the VFL, Bauer plays key defence or if needed late in a game as a key forward. Whereas Brown always plays that interceptor/rebounding defender role. Despite being of similar height, there's a body weight difference of 5kg between the two according to RFC website. I presume Bauer would've added more weight since earlier in the year given his role.
-
Bradtke 3. I'd have love to see him thisbyea that to give Jack a rest.

After serving a three-game suspension that cost him his AFL spot, Rhyan Mansell starred for Richmond in its 13-point win over Southport on Saturday.
The small forward had 25 possessions, eight marks, six tackles and two goals to immediately get back in the conversation for a senior return.
Key forward Kaelan Bradtke will also garner some interest after kicking three goals, as the Tigers look for someone to help lighten the load on Jack Riewoldt, while Noah Cumberland slotted two majors.
Midfielders Tyler Sonsie (27 disposals, six clearances) and Thomson Dow (21, four) also hit the scoreboard with one goal each, as did Judson Clarke (16 disposals, seven marks).
Tom Brown continued his excellent season with 26 touches, while mid-season draftee James Trezise got plenty of it with 24 touches.
Without a recognized ruckman in the lineup the tap work was left to the versatile Bigoa Nyuon, and while he was dominated at the bounces with just eight hitouts, 'Biggy' did plenty around the ground gathering 18 touches, 10 marks and kicking a goal.
Richmond's other mid-season pick, small forward Matthew Coulthard managed a goal, while teenager Steely Green had 11 disposals.

Yeah- he is being developed as a small forward. Was being played as a small defender pre-season then pushed forward. His best footy is playing around the ball.

Is quick, tackles and has a crack and that's about it , not nearly as unco as George but his goal kicking is certainly on par with the great man... :shh

VFL Report: Round 17
Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's win over Southport at Fankhauser Reserve.
Tyler Sonsie (27 disposals, 11 contested possessions, six clearances, four marks, one goal)
"I thought he was right back towards his best. He had a much better balance between contested and uncontested possession, and he stepped in really well, leading us with six clearances."
Tom Brown (26 disposals, 11 rebound-50s, five marks)
"Continued his good form on the weekend. Probably wasn't quite as clean as he usually is with the footy in hand, but made some really good decisions and continues to be strong on defence."
Rhyan Mansell (25 disposals, eight marks, six tackles, two goals)
"I thought he was clearly our best player on the day. He stepped in really well as a forward, was really important on the wing at stages, had a team-high six tackles and kicked two really classy goals as well."
James Trezise (24 disposals, seven marks, six rebound-50s, three inside-50s)
"Another standout game. Won the ball back for us really well behind the footy, and played to our system really well. We're continuing to work with him on his offensive involvement, and I think he can continue to take that to another level."
Thomson Dow (21 disposals, four clearances, one goal)
"It was the best he's kicked the ball all season, his skills were beautiful on the day and he looked engaged around stoppage and dynamic. He continued his good form and also kicked a really important goal late in the third quarter from long range."
Bigoa Nyuon (18 disposals, 10 marks, six inside-50s, one goal)
"Had a pretty good game. He took 10 marks on the day and he kicked a goal and probably dropped a couple of marks inside 50 that would have given him scoring shots. But, I thought he had a much bigger influence on the game on the weekend."
Judson Clarke (16 disposals, seven marks, one goal)
"He looked really lively on the day. Played majority on the wing just through necessity and game situation, and I thought his speed and skills really stood out. He kicked the ball beautifully on the day and finished off with a lovely goal from a tight angle around his body."
Noah Cumberland (14 disposals, six marks, five inside-50s, two goals)
"One of the more dynamic, explosive players on the ground. The opposition found it really difficult to tackle him, and he won contests ahead of the footy. He was selfless at times, which was great to see, and I was really pleased with his output."
Kaelan Bradtke (12 disposals, four marks, three goals)
"I thought it was his best game of the season. He's struck a really good patch of form. He kicked three goals on the day, took a couple of really strong contested marks, and looked to bring other players into the game. He was an imposing big man on the ground."
Matt Coulthard (11 disposals, four marks, one goal)
"His work rate certainly couldn't be questioned. He could have made a little bit more of his opportunities on the day, but the impact that he had, both from an offensive point of view but more importantly, from a defensive point of view, was pretty sound."
Steely Green (11 disposals, six marks, six inside-50s)
"Had a good day that could have been a lot better if we had have used him on a number of occasions. He's learning his role as a half-forward really well and we've seen great gains from his game over the last six to eight weeks. A really exciting player for us moving forwards."
