How did brown go? Looked like a straight fwd replacement for Bauer since he spent his 5mins behind the ball in his debut. Hoping brown gets a run in the seniors soon. His numbers at vfl level look a lot more consistent this season.

They know how to win the close ones - unlike the seniors under  Hardwick.

Mansell should be in the senior line up. Has proven himself as a solid contributor and no one can question his toughness. Isn’t soft like most fringe players nowadays.

I would also be getting games into Biggie. So much upside compared to Slowmo Soldo who hasn’t been the same since Hawkins pushed him in the back and injured his knee.
The club that keeps giving.

Be careful judging him by stats.
He gets many of his registered stats from taking kick outs from fullback once you kick it from outside the goal square

Ah I see. I did watch one game I think 3 weeks ago where he was great but yeah I don’t get around to watching too many vfl games so for the most part I’m only seeing the stats.

Brown was solid today in his usual role as an interceptor and distributor behind the ball. Others were more influential on the game IMHO. Brown's close to a senior call up but there's not really an open spot for him at the moment. Unless we suffer an injury to one of our intercepting defenders then I don't see him coming into the AFL side. Maybe only if our season is shot with a round or two to go and we're in the playing the kids mode.

VFL Tigers storm home against Southport

Richmond VFL booted seven of the final eight goals to win a seesawing encounter against Southport on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

15 July 2023

Richmond VFL have bounced back from last week's surprise loss to Sydney with an impressive away victory in Southport on Saturday afternoon.

With the scoring timeline having peaks and troughs not too dissimilar to tonight's high alpine stage in the Tour De France, it was the Tigers who broke away from late in the third quarter to claim the seesawing encounter.

After conceding the opening seven goals of the third quarter to Southport, the Tigers responded with seven of the final eight goals of the game to record a 13-point win, with final scores reading 15.8 (98) to 12.13 (85).

Rhyan Mansell returned from suspension with a 25-disposal, five-tackle performance, as well as kicking two classy goals at crucial times. He was just behind second-year players Tyler Sonsie (27 disposals, six clearance, three tackles, one goal) and Tom Brown (26 touches, two clearances) as the Tigers' leading ball-winners.

Kaelan Bradtke made the most of the opportunities he created in front of goal with strong marking and bodywork, kicking three goals straight, while Noah Cumberland was again lively, booting two goals and being involved in setting up others to Brad Melville and Moey Yassine.

Bigoa Nyuon was the dominant player on the ground in the second quarter. In the absence of Ivan Soldo and Samson Ryan, his partnership with Sonsie and Thomson Dow in the middle saw the Tigers accelerate towards the half-time break. As the siren sounded for the long change, Nyuon marked and kicked truly to give the visitors a 21-point lead, and finished the game with 18 disposals, ten marks and six inside 50s.

Former Gold Coast Sun big man Brayden Crossley must have taken that personally, though, as he led the Sharks to a near-unassailable lead in the third term. Crossley was imperious in the ruck and around the ground with a goal, Jacob Dawson and Boyd Woodcock won plenty of the ball, but it was Jake McQueen (three goals) and Fraser Thurlow (two goals) who were proving to be difficult to stop from capitalising on the scoreboard.

As Thurlow suffered an injury late in the third quarter, the Tigers showed what they had in their previous interstate trips this season - they will fight until the end.

Cumberland, Mansell and Dow provided the spark with three quick, well-taken goals on the verge of the final break.

Jack Sexton opened the scoring in the final term as Southport re-established a ten-point lead, before Yassine, Matt Coulthard, Bradtke and Judson Clarke piled on four goals in less than eight minutes to seal an incredible win for the Tigers.

The only sour note of the match for Richmond was a leg injury to Garrett McDonagh in the final stages of the last quarter, that saw the 27-year-old on crutches post-game.

The VFL Tigers host Box Hill at the Swinburne Centre next Saturday morning in what shapes as a crucial clash for both sides as they approach the final month of the season.

Would have thought he plays the same roll that they had Bauer playing? Although admittedly not with the flexibility to roll him fwd.

I think it was Balmey the other day that said Bauer was brought into the seniors to play as a 2nd tall forward despite his first two possies being on the wing (before injurying his hammy). In the VFL, Bauer plays key defence or if needed late in a game as a key forward. Whereas Brown always plays that interceptor/rebounding defender role. Despite being of similar height, there's a body weight difference of 5kg between the two according to RFC website. I presume Bauer would've added more weight since earlier in the year given his role.

After serving a three-game suspension that cost him his AFL spot, Rhyan Mansell starred for Richmond in its 13-point win over Southport on Saturday.

The small forward had 25 possessions, eight marks, six tackles and two goals to immediately get back in the conversation for a senior return.

Key forward Kaelan Bradtke will also garner some interest after kicking three goals, as the Tigers look for someone to help lighten the load on Jack Riewoldt, while Noah Cumberland slotted two majors.

Midfielders Tyler Sonsie (27 disposals, six clearances) and Thomson Dow (21, four) also hit the scoreboard with one goal each, as did Judson Clarke (16 disposals, seven marks).

Tom Brown continued his excellent season with 26 touches, while mid-season draftee James Trezise got plenty of it with 24 touches.

Without a recognized ruckman in the lineup the tap work was left to the versatile Bigoa Nyuon, and while he was dominated at the bounces with just eight hitouts, 'Biggy' did plenty around the ground gathering 18 touches, 10 marks and kicking a goal.

Richmond's other mid-season pick, small forward Matthew Coulthard managed a goal, while teenager Steely Green had 11 disposals.

Steely Green seems like a bit of a bust.  Late pick I know but doesn't get much of the ball at VFL level?  Haven't watched the games, maybe he's playing forward all the time?
