Title: Tiges v Hawks in Tassie
Post by: one-eyed on June 08, 2006, 02:08:16 AM
According to BF, 16,000 tickets already sold and still a week and a half to go. The record at York Park of around 19,000 for a Saints vs Port match should be beaten with more pre-game sales and walk-ups.

If that happens the AFL may make this game an annual event in Tassie.

I am flying down.

Here's my tassie flight saga............. :banghead

Flying over Friday night  :clapping :clapping :clapping

Had booked a nice cheap return flight with Virgin Blue ($70 or something) last October. Got an email from them to say they had change my flight - leaving tassie at the new time of 4.30pm. Phoned them said "excuse me the new time's a bit pointless seeing I am at a football game that doesn't finish until around 4.00pm ::)". Their reply was that was the last flight of the day but they could put me on flight at 6.00am the next morning. Which bought me to me next question - were VB going to pay the extra nights accomodation  ???. Answer was no. Cancelled the VB flight now have a credit I have ot use before October or I lose my dough.  :help :help Not happy at all  :banghead Virgin Blue =  :wallywink

Needed to find a flight home - logged onto Jetstar - they have a flight at 6.30pm - beauty. Only a small hitch only seats available on that flight were the full fare ones $199 instead of the el cheapo $69 ones. Only good thing about paying Jetstar's full fare is I get Qantas Frequest Flyer points :thumbsup

We just might be favourites next week too lol. Hawks pumped by 96 points and they were 78 points down at half-time  :o. Without Crawf, Croad and Jacobs you just tag Hodge and Mitchell and they fall to pieces. More holes in their defence than Swiss cheese.

LOL Buddy Franklin running forward of every contest to get on the end of a cheap possession when the footy (and his direct opponent) was continually heading in the opposite direction  :lol.

We need to get that killer instinct and bury the opposition when we get on top. The one thing we didn't do against the Roos.

Next week -  RUTHLESS RICHMOND :gotigers

Ferry down Friday night. Ferry back Sunday night (Brazil v Australia Monday AM) Do you think I will still be awake - lol

Just been searching the web for a local game Saturday, all the launceston teams away (miles) poo.  Boags brewery closed Saturday so got to do something hey.-  So I found a NTFA game at Rocherlea on Saturday arvo (closest one to Launceston) only 8 k away  - so should be amusing. :gotigers

Tigers smell danger
14 June 2006   Herald Sun
Jim Wilson

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace says speculation on the future of Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson and Peter Everitt's 250th game makes Sunday's clash a danger game for the Tigers.

And another reason Wallace is wary about the match is it will be the first time the Tigers have ventured to Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

"It's Spida's 250th and with all the talk around Alastair's circumstances, we are extremely aware of how dangerous this game will be,' Wallace said.

"The Hawks are coming off a massive loss and have pretty good form at a ground where we haven't played.

"Add it all up and we know it will be tough."

Wallace confirmed star spearhead Matthew Richardson would miss the match, despite his desire to play in his home state.

Richardson will almost certainly return after the mid-season break for the showdown against Collingwood.

Wallace said he was disappointed the Magpies had refused to play the Tigers twice next year, including the financially appealing season-opener.

Richmond was keen to end a dispute with Collingwood over gate receipts that erupted in 2004, but the Magpies have refused, claiming they were "dudded" by the Tigers.

"To me, it's history and happened before this administration and I arrived here,' Wallace said.

"I don't know if anyone was dudded by anyone who now has a position at this club."

Wallace backed the AFL's crackdown on players who attack the head of an opponent.

"There needs to be a loud message out there that we don't lose someone for unnecessary acts,' Wallace said.

"It's a split-second decision, but every decision has a consequence.

"On the weekend, there were other alternatives available to players, apart from the actions they took."

His comments follow an incident involving young Tiger Richard Tambling, who was hit on Saturday by Kangaroo Jade Rawlings.

The tribunal suspended Rawlings for one match last night.

Wallace has also renewed his call to closely monitor the use of caffeine tablets at all levels of the game.

Caffeine is likely to be returned to the banned list by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

WADA will again discuss its use in September, after taking it off the banned list and listing it as a substance to be monitored.

"I don't think you want 15-year-olds turning up to football matches to get their caffeine limits high to perform,"' Wallace said.

"A kid will follow the example set by an elite athlete."

Caffeine tablets became a contentious issue last year after an admission from several high-profile players that they regularly took them.

Staff will be disappointed lol. He might get dropped now.

The Hawks will still have two ruckmen (Taylor and Campbell) but they are using Campbell at FB. They'll either have to bring poor Dawson back in to play at FB to release Campbell into the ruck or play 18 year old Birchall. Either way Simmo should have a day out as they won't have the size and mobility to go with him.

We just have to make sure we don't become complacent and go out and show no mercy.

Speaking to my mhosts for the weekend and they tell me the weather in Launie has been freezing at night but fine during the day (around 14-15 degree days) - sounds good to me  :thumbsup

I reckon this is another danger game for us.

We have to be switched on and focused from the beginning.

Remember last season at the Dome we were raging favourites and we let the Dawks get of to a flyer and we didn't win until the last minute - cannot let that happen again IMO

True WP. We have a bad habit of doing this against the Hawks. Can remember us giving them huge starts 4 times in past 6 years  :-\. Thankfully we got over the line in 3 of them much to their devastation lol. We also haven't given another side a good thumping since the Blues game early last year. We need to show no mercy  :thumbsup.

As long as it isn't raining and the ground is fairly dry we should be fine. Not that we can't win in the wet but it does even up contests and as the Swans found out last week if you try to play dry weather footy in the wet you come undone very quickly.

The media "experts" have finally hopped on the Tiggy Train this week. Herald-Sun 17-1 and the Age 16-0 (not counting the black dog). Even Dermie went against his beloved Hawks.

WP, or anyone else going to the game, be interesting to know which team has the most support.  Just wondering what kind of supporter base we still have down there.  It used to be big, but with 26 years in the wilderness and other teams going down there, wondering whether we still have a healthy following.

I reckon it is pretty strong Moi - the pre-match function is a sellout (400+ people I believe)

Timekeeper back on job
17 June 2006   Herald Sun
Daryl Timms

THE timekeeper in the Round 5 siren fiasco at Aurora Stadium will back be in Tasmania for tomorrow's Hawthorn-Richmond clash.

Melbourne-based Max Harvey admitted he did not keep his finger on the button long enough for the umpires to hear the final siren in the St Kilda-Fremantle clash.

Although Fremantle had won the match at full time, the umpires allowed play to continue because they had not heard the siren.

The Saints drew the game in the illegal extra time, but the AFL Commission changed the result and awarded the four points to Fremantle.

AFL umpires boss Jeff Gieschen said last night Harvey had been allocated tomorrow's game when roster's were released at the start of the season.

``He was stood down for a couple of games but he wants to jump back on the horse and go back to Tasmania,'' Gieschen said.

Harvey took full responsibility for the error but Tasmanian-based timekeeper Noel McKenzie was also stood down.

Gieschen said because there had been no more games at Aurora Stadium since Round5, McKenzie was still having ``a spell''.

Aurora Stadium manager Robert Groenewegen said new sirens had since been installed and the timekeeper's box relocated to the fourth level of The Gunns Stand on the wing.

Groenewegen said it was still being decided whether the old sirens would be donated to a local museum or auctioned for charity.

He said tomorrow's game was likely to be a sellout, with 18,500 tickets already sold. The ground has a capacity of about 22,000.

Launceston all clear
18 June 2006   Sunday Herald Sun
Jon Ralph

AFL ground operations manager Jill Lindsay gave the all-clear yesterday to the controversial Aurora Stadium's new sirens and time-keepers box ahead of today's Hawthorn-Richmond match.

Lindsay is the appointed match manager for the game _ the first at the ground since the ``sirengate'' fiasco involving St Kilda and Fremantle _ and was shown the improved timekeepers' box and the two banks for four sirens.

Aurora Stadium manager Robert Groenewegen said yesterday the newly installed $15,000 sirens had an emergency battery back-up, with another siren to be played through the PA system if they failed.

``We have got a back-up to the back-up to the back-up,'' he said.

Lindsay said the sirens would reach the 86-decibel standard set for AFL venues comfortably.

``There is a list of things I go through and the issue with the sirens was dealt with straight after the (StKilda-Fremantle) game there,'' she said.

Tigers had the greater support by a long way - we were front page, back page news. They got 300-400 people at a Crazy John promo on Saturday

The kids selling the records were yelling "Footy record - Tigers come to Tassie - get ya footy record"  :lol

All the locakls reckon the Tigers are massive in Tassie :thumbsup

True Moi. The only time there was a real loud cheer was when Petts kicked that long bomb for a goal in the second quarter.
Title: RFC ask for Hawks game in Tassie to become a annual fixture

HAWTHORN has started negotiations to increase the number of games it plays in Tasmania after the success of its match against Richmond last Sunday.

Hawthorn is contracted to play two matches a season at Aurora Stadium in Launceston until 2010, but is eager to increase its number of home games at the venue after a record crowd of 20,971 turned out for the game.

Club president Jeff Kennett met Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon over a round of golf at Barnbougle Dunes in the state's north-east last Saturday.

According to a source from Events Tasmania, which guarantees Hawthorn and St Kilda a profit of $300,000 a game at Aurora Stadium, Lennon was keen for Hawthorn to commit to four matches a year in Tasmania from 2008, when St Kilda's contract expires.

He [Kennett] also said he had been approached by Richmond board members before Sunday's match, and they intimated a desire to play Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium on a regular basis.

"We have fallen in love with Tasmania," Kennett said. "And like us, they were thrilled with the crowd, the venue, the playing surface, and how the match had been embraced by its members. It was suggested (by Richmond) that Hawthorn-Richmond in Launceston could become an annual fixture."
