Sydney opening? Why Blues, Tigers may be bumped from first game
Caroline Wilson
The Age
August 5, 2023
The AFL is considering a radical shift in the 2024 fixture with a proposal to launch the season at least one week early in Sydney in a bid to steal a march on the NRL.
The Swans and the Giants hosting a double-header, or hosting games on consecutive days over the weekend of March 8-10, is one of a series of initiatives to be put forward at the competition’s September AFL Commission talks. Carlton and Richmond, who have traditionally opened the season, would most likely clash at the MCG on Thursday, March 14, with the rest of the opening round to follow.
Some senior AFL bosses are acknowledging a number of fixturing own goals in 2023 against the NRL in Sydney, which has gained further momentum in NSW since the birth of Greater Western Sydney, who still struggle to attract an audience. The move to open the season early ahead of the Carlton-Richmond game comes as the NRL is looking at launching its 2024 season in Las Vegas.
AFL CEO-elect Andrew Dillon confirmed the competition was looking at an early season launch in Sydney, which could involve both the Swans and the Giants hosting games. The two clubs remain in finals contention and face off at Giants Stadium on Saturday night.
Dillon said the prospect was one of a series of proposals being considered as part of a wider assault on the Sydney and NSW markets starting from the grassroots.

AFL floats double-header in Sydney to open 2024 season
By Riley Beveridge
afl.com.au
16 October 2023
THE AFL has floated with clubs a Sydney-focused split round to begin the 2024 season, which would see both the Giants and the Swans hosting blockbuster standalone fixtures across an earlier weekend of action.
It's understood the proposed round one fixture, which was distributed to clubs last week but is not final, would feature Greater Western Sydney kicking off the 2024 season against Collingwood on a Saturday night before Sydney plays Melbourne on the Sunday afternoon.
Every other club's season-openers would then be played the following weekend and would likely feature Carlton's annual Thursday night clash against Richmond at the MCG.

I’m not too upset about losing the opener. The afl always has new rules and new interpretations at the start of the year and we always get shafted with free kicks when the umpires are too whistle happy
-
Yeah I DGAF when we play Carlton.
-
Greater Western Sydney is set to open the 2024 AFL season against Collingwood, with the Giants awaiting final confirmation from head office.
GWS CEO Dave Matthews confirmed the news to SEN on Thursday afternoon, with the league looking to break further into the Sydney market under Andrew Dillon’s leadership.
“If we could get a week ahead of what is seen to be the Melbourne opening, Richmond and Carlton, and we could get a couple of standalone fixtures up here in terms of the Swans being at home and us being at home, I think it would be great.

The AFL is considering us playing Gold Coast away first up in Qld before playing Carlton in round 2.
--------------------------------------------------
But it's now understood the AFL is also contemplating a further two fixtures in Queensland across that same earlier weekend, which would feature Brisbane playing a home match at the Gabba and Gold Coast hosting Richmond.
One option being considered is for the Lions to play Carlton in a rematch of last season's preliminary final, while a Suns-Tigers matchup would see Damien Hardwick coaching against his former side for the first time.
That proposal would enable both the Blues and the Tigers to play in Queensland across the earlier weekend, before returning to Victoria for their annual Thursday night clash at the MCG the following week.

“I GUARANTEE IT”: CAM LUKE’S BOLD CARLTON V RICHMOND ROUND 1 CROWD PREDICTION
By Lachlan Geleit
SEN
21 December 2023
SEN host Cam Luke has named his early certainty for the 2024 AFL season.
Much of the chatter in the last few weeks in the AFL world has surrounded the league’s new Opening Round which will take place before Round 1 in NSW and Queensland.
Opening Round will see eight teams play across four games, with a traditional Round 1 taking place the following weekend with all 18 teams involved.
That means that the season will officially be opened up when Sydney host Melbourne at the SCG on Thursday, March 7 – moving away from the traditional Thursday season opener between Carlton and Richmond at the MCG.
While some fans of the Blues and Tigers are disgruntled that their sides won’t officially be kickstarting the campaign, Luke doesn’t expect it to hinder crowd figures whatsoever.
In fact, Luke’s early certainty is that there’ll be more fans at 2024’s Round 1 game between the sides compared to the 88,084 that attended the fixture in 2023 – even if both clubs will have played a week earlier up north.
“A lot of people are a little bit disgruntled if you barrack for Richmond or Carlton because we have Opening Round a week earlier (than Round 1),” Luke said on SEN Afternoons.
“I guarantee that the MCG on that Thursday night will have a bigger crowd next year than it was this year.
“I guarantee it. That game, the first game at the MCG, Richmond v Carlton, will be jam-packed.
“88,074, they will beat it. The Carlton fans better be on that bandwagon, and for Richmond fans, there’s plenty to get into.”
Luke even went as far as to predict that last year’s crowd figure will be easily eclipsed, stating that at least 90,000 will turn up to the MCG for the blockbuster clash in 2024.
“I’ll go one step further, they'll get 90,000 to the MCG,” Luke added.
“They'll get 90 plus … it will be full to the brim.
“That is my absolute certainty, there will be a bigger crowd next year than there was at Richmond v Carlton this year.”
The crowd for the Thursday Round 1 opener between Richmond and Carlton has once passed 90,000, with 90,151 attending the season-opener in 2018.

Yeah I'm sure those three will address our lack of speed & defensive issues... :shh

It’s a fresh start next week. We showed we can at the least compete but there are just so many weaknesses it’s overwhelming.
The midfield as a whole just isn’t working. Dow is a deer in the headlights. Prestia is old and slow and wasn’t working hard enough, saw him let Rowell run away so many times.
Back line relying on young to take the big key forward is so shakey. Assume
He will take mckay and will get slaughtered.

“LOOK OUT FOR THIS ONE”: BRAD JOHNSON'S BOLD ROUND 1 UPSET CALL
By Lachlan Geleit
SEN
13 March 2024
Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson has made a bold prediction ahead of Round 1 of the AFL season.
That prediction pertains to Thursday night’s clash between Carlton and Richmond at the MCG.
While the contending Blues are considered hot favourites as the Tigers enter a rebuilding phase, Johnson has Richmond causing a huge upset at the MCG’s first game of the season.
That bold call comes after the Blues upset the Lions at the Gabba in Opening Round, while the Tigers were poor first up under Adem Yze going down to the Suns on the Gold Coast.
Johnson explained why he expects Richmond to cause a boilover with their ins significant as the Blues also lose Sam Docherty to injury.
“Look out for this one,” Johnson said on SEN Sportsday.
“I look at the way Carlton played last week. It was brilliant … the second half was off the charts.
“But I sort of go, ‘Ok, well, massive win … one of the best wins in the club history’, but will they back it up this week?
“Potentially they could, but I think with the Sam Docherty injury adding to (Caleb) Marchbank, (Jacob) Weitering and (Sam) Walsh … then you've got the Tigers and who they bring back in this week.
“I sort of sit there and I go, Dustin Martin comes in, Toby Nankervis will be right to go and Tom Lynch comes in up forward.
“Tom Lynch is probably the one where there's the biggest question mark on in terms of what he may do in terms of output, but he’s proven when he's come back from injury in the past … he's still a really strong target.
“He’ll get their best defender that they've got down there … they (Carlton) would prefer it to be Weitering.
“So, for me, I think the Tigers will win this game.”
Johnson also likes what he’s heard from Richmond during the week and he thinks that the Tigers have acknowledged their shortcomings against Gold Coast and will make amends for that come Thursday.
“It'll be a big comeback from the way they produced their footy last week,” Johnson said.
“At times they were disappointing they weren't as hard as the Gold Coast Suns.
“You know what it's like when a team gets hit like that and they are able to then assess that internally and actually accept the fact that they weren't at their best.
“Richmond players have come out and said that this week.
“That for me is the mental shift required with their staff factor coming back into this lineup that will get them across the line against a team that is still depleted with injury.
“I think they will fluctuate in the first part of the year the Blues, until they get their absolute best team back on the field.”

Carlton versus Richmond Preview
Nic Negrepontis
SEN
13 March 2023
The classic Round 1 opener once again sees Carlton and Richmond battling it out at the MCG.
The Tigers will be heavily bolstered going into this one, with Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin and Toby Nankervis available for selection, while Carlton loses Sam Docherty and likely won’t get any key players back.
They will be missing potentially up to seven of their best 22, but coming off an incredible come-from-behind win over Brisbane, the Blues will be full of confidence.
Carlton got the monkey off their back in Round 1 of 2022, breaking a nine-year losing streak against the Tigers, but lost again later in the season and then we have last year’s infamous draw.
Despite the Blues being expected to be clearly better than Richmond in 2024, the mental demons will still be there for a lot of players.
Gold Coast dominated Richmond through the midfield last week and even with Martin returning, it’s hard to see Patrick Cripps, Adam Cerra and George Hewett not giving the Blues a clearance and territory advantage.
And when that happens, Carlton is tough to beat – particularly given Richmond don’t have great matchups on paper for Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow.
That supply going forward will likely be the downfall of the Tigers on Thursday night.
Having said that, this is a great chance for Adem Yze’s men to claim a scalp given the personnel Carlton is missing.
Tip: Carlton by 25 points

-
Just a quick question- what time will Carlton be unveiling their flag for finishing fourth last year ??
-
LOL matty :lol
Sadly, don't see us going with the Blues tonight. They will be feeling bulletproof after last week while we're playing underdone stars in the hope of filling in the cracks :-\. Touchwood, we (esp. Lynch) get through unscathed :pray. Only way this will be competitive is if we jump them at the start to make a game of it.
-
Let the season really begin!
-
Poor defence. Where was someone sitting in the corridor in front of McKay?
-
Already a BS HTB against Dusty. Zero prior, set upon by 3 blokes lol
-
These umps. Zero prior opportunity for Dusty, tackled by 3 guys!
-
Got to kick those Timmy.
-
Two wasted opportunities and they make us pay.
Taranto had MRJ all alone and a poor miss by Bolton.
-
And that's why you get criticised Shai. Drop punt is the best option.
Not doing the basics right has cost us 4 goals already (2 misses and giving the Blues 2).
-
Our transition D looks so bad. Also way outnumbered at contests
-
Kicking Eff:
Carlton 92%
Us 37%
:P
-
Lynch on the board with a soft but technically correct free

Well done and welcome back Tiger Tom :gotigers
Rich 1.2-8
Carl 2.0-12

Cut out the too-cute crap :banghead.

LUcky there. Maurice got in the way.

Very lucky to be winning at QT
Two absolute soft frees to Lynch but he's earned them for years of being molested.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 5.2-32
Carlton 3.3-21
Goals: Lynch 2, Martin, Balta, Short.
Better than expected. Lynch straightens us up. Got to keep it up and cut out the simple errors.
-
Carlton look super dangerous exiting our fwd50. Their handball chains have been quick and beating us easily. We definitely look better in the contest compared to last week though. Nank, for all the dumb frees he gives, is a warrior. Makes Ryan look like a local ressies player
-
Very lucky to be winning at QT
Two absolute soft frees to Lynch but he's earned them for years of being molested.
First one was correct.
-
Prestia another hammy :(.

Did I hear right Prestia has done a hammy? Lol
Very lucky to be winning at QT

First one was correct.
Like I said, soft but technically correct
-
Prestia god damn. Feel for the guy but geez
-
Kmac with the moves on the wing. Mansell contests and Balta crumbs and kicks his 2nd :gotigers.
Out the middle, Dusty long bomb misses.
Rich 6.3-39
Carl 4.4-28
-
Basics Tiges! :banghead
-
Ross had to go there. Ballwatching.
-
Lucky they are missing.
-
Can we have someone leading up to the kicker as we come out of defence.
-
Sloppy tackling by Grimes
-
Kmac 🤦🏽♂️
-
Panic crap footy. Once again not doing the basics.
-
That's HTB ump ::).
-
These dinky little kicks straight to Carlton players are doing my head in :banghead.
-
Our skills are atrocious.
-
Yep absolute basic skills this quarter have killed us
-
Get M Rioli off, he's hopeless
-
Witches hats this quarter.
-
Is it just me or does Young have a little bit of Vickery about him. Lacks some serious self awareness.
-
This has to be the last time we see McIntosh play. And as for Prestia....just retire
-
Gibcus down :(.
-
This season is going to poo very quickly
-
That’s got ACL written all over it
-
Gibcus done his knee, poor guy. Looks like he’s an injury prone kind of guy.
That really hurts
-
This season is going to poo very quickly
Losing games only affects this year but bad injuries to quality top 10 draft picks affects our future.

Yep. Brown will now play the rest of the season. Gibcus gone another year
-
Or please god don’t let balta go back and we play kosi forward
-
Top contested mark by Nank. Need a captain's goal. Misses.
40 - 45
-
Not sure why you go to the shortest forward in a contest. Lucky it paid off. Maurice goal :gotigers puts us in front at HT :o
-
I kept waiting for the dam wall to bursts - can’t believe we’re in front.

Yes. I was referring to losing our best young prospect for the season
-
Half-time
Richmond 5.2 7.4-46
Carlton 3.3 6.9-45
Goals: Lynch 2, Balta 2, Martin, Short, M.Rioli.
Blues misses kept us in it. The only reason why we are front. We did get some forward half play in the last 5 mins which lead to Maurice's goal.
Down one on the bench for the second half with both Prestia and Gibcus out injured.
-
Gibcus knee is literally worst result of any sort of scenario in any game this year. If anything allows him to be right for next year. But stuff me. Awful news.
-
We’re having a dip. Winning contested ball.
Gibcus ACL really sucks.

Showing the sort of grit that has made us such a tough team over recent times. Pickett has been huge

How do you shank that so bad. Now that’s a coach killer

Embarrassing by Balta for an AFL player
-
What the hell was that Balta :banghead

Was gonna say easily balta best game in a long time and then he does that

Not doing the basics again :banghead.
Noah, you can bang the ball 60m+ forward and you decide to kick a dodgy sideways scrubber that gifts Carlton a goal :scream.

Free to Mansell 10 out. Then stupidly rushes it and misses :facepalm.
Dare I say again - BASICS! :banghead
-
That was being a hog Bakes. You had Dusty to hand to.
-
Will be surprised if we win. Doesn’t matter though, we’ve shown the guts, toughness, determination. Invaluable for the younger guys playing today to see and feel what it’s like.
Very important going forward

3/4 time
Richmond 5.2 7.4 11.7-73
Carlton 3.3 6.9 9.11-65
Goals: Balta 3, Lynch 2, Martin 2, Short, M.Rioli, Baker, Taranto
Wasted a few chances that quarter but been gutsy so far.
-
Classic Balta moment.
Been very good besides that though.
-
Lynch hooks it.
74 - 65
-
What comes first there, the dropping the ball or the in the back????
-
Can someone get down to Punt Rd and teach our blokes how to tackle properly. You have to rotate the player from behind.
-
Again a Carlton player is a sitting duck and we go high.
-
Umpires reaming us just in time
-
Balta goes long and high to baker if all people outnumbered 3-1.
-
Nothing like a 70 meter penalty -WTF!
-
Without seeing the proper angle I’m almost certain that was a throw by Cripps
-
Brainfades galore.
-
For goodness sake Shai :banghead :banghead
-
Without seeing the proper angle I’m almost certain that was a throw by Cripps
It looked a rugby throw.
-
I’ve had enough of Bolton. Just can’t do the fundamentals. SO frustrating
-
That was chopping the arms on Grimes.
-
Great save by Floss.
But are we going to get screwed by ARC again ::).
-
Love to know the free kick count this quarter?
-
Our skills need to be addressed. Absolutely disgraceful
And from seasoned players too
-
Well this is still disappointing even given the circumstances.
-
By hand and foot our skills are bad.
-
Campbell :gotigers
Rich 12.8-80
Carl 12.13-85
That was gift to us from the Blues.
-
Taranto out the middle and Bakes gets the mark/free on 50. MIsses
81 - 85
-
How was that advantage?
-
Baker has killed us
-
How was that advantage?
Cheats
-
Game is stuffed. Umps are fing cheats. I’ve officially checked out
-
Really good effort from the boys. It’s a tough night for the club with gibcus going down.
Seriously don’t see bolton as a part of our future.
Going to be a long season with gibcus’ injury re structuring our team
-
I get the feeling were going to have many fighting losses this year, not many wins.
-
Ballsy effort tonight, but geez, some of our decision making and basic skills are putrid.
-
Better showing than last week. Injuries and concussion did us in as outlr structure got destoyed. Although is it just me or was it everytime we got moving the whistle come back into play??
-
Sound like a broken record, but fing umps.
80m penalty, Kamdyn arm chopped, even the Balta in the back, he didn't actually fall onto him...
-
Must acknowledge the huge performance by the boys. To run out the game with nothing left in the tank was impressive. We played a great style tonight and if not for those multiple injuries, we win the game.
-
Umpiring was bad but please don’t complain, we were gifted goals too
-
Final Score
Richmond 5.2 7.4 11.7 12.9-81
Carlton 3.3 6.9 9.11 12.14-86
Goals: Balta 3, Lynch 2, Martin 2, Short, M.Rioli, Baker, Taranto, Campbell.
Gutsy to fight it out and we had our chances to win it but our failure to do the basics (skills and tackling) well and often enough just kills us. The injuries especially an ACL to Gibcus just makes the loss hurt more.
-
Must acknowledge the huge performance by the boys. To run out the game with nothing left in the tank was impressive. We played a great style tonight and if not for those multiple injuries, we win the game.
The umps had the script. Injuries or not they were making sure we lost
-
Bluddy spirited effort. Lots of positives but, gee, our fumbling and missed basics told in the end. We will get better. Lynch was super rusty, Dusty will be better.
Miller in for Young, Balta is just going to have to go back for Gibcus, can't see too many alternatives really.
-
Sound like a broken record, but fing umps.
80m penalty, Kamdyn arm chopped, even the Balta in the back, he didn't actually fall onto him...
Just on that, why don’t they pay the first free dropping the ball. The secondary action is momentum granted it was in the back. Pay the first in my book.

How costly was that miss by Mansell

Was a great effort. Let’s just get some more kids into the team. We aren’t good enough to win most games this year so let’s atleast lose whilst getting some experience. Dow was poor again

Thought Dow was ok

What the stuff was he doing in the team off the back of a 4 week injury anyway. He ain’t that good.

Forget the result, at this stage it's not really relevant. Sure a win would have been great but very proud of the boys tonight, everything that could have gone against them did . The fight was there, that's all that matters. Will take a few weeks for Yze to get the balance right . It will come

Thought nank was solid tonight - not easy missing games and then fronting up as the #1 ruckman. Kept going with everyone going down around him. Wouldn't have been easy to keep the spirits up after halftime. One of the reasons we were still in it.

Thought so too although admittedly my bar for him is quite low

Better than solid, leading clearance player on the ground, equal leading tackles, 19 possessions. Very good for first game in. If he'd nailed his set shot...

Can see potential, great vision and hands. Just needs to get it more often.

Pickett was the biggest liability tonight...both our wingers are useless.... people bagging MRJ need get a stuffing clue - his pressure kept us in it at the end....not his fault his idiot team mates couldn't capitalise..... :shh

The 50 metre penalty that was 70 metres, or was that my imagination ??

It’s especially wrong when they get this wrong in between the arcs, like you literally have a reference point to measure the distance right there. If your 1m inside the centre square the 50m penalty should take you 1m outside the other end of the square. It’s not rocket science :banghead

Yet when all its all said and done it barely made the headlines.
do we even have a president. Where is that bloke.

Round 1 Report Card

RICHMOND
The Tigers were mighty brave in Thursday night’s narrow loss to Carlton. It was probably the story of the night if not for suffering a triple injury blow to Josh Gibcus (ACL), Dion Prestia (hamstring) and Tylar Young (concussion). You were always anticipating a response from Richmond after disappointing Opening Round loss to Gold Coast — particularly with Tom Lynch, Toby Nankervis and Dustin Martin back — but not many could’ve seen Adem Yze’s aside taking the Blues all the way. Plenty of positives despite coming up short on the night.
In the votes
Noah Balta was sensational — kicking three goals in attack before he was forced to switch back to defence after Gibcus went down. It creates a dilemma for Yze on how he best uses Balta moving forward given Richmond’s lack of firepower in attack. Nick Vlaustin was also enormous in defence, while Nankervis’ grunt work inside the contact was huge and makes the Tigers a much tougher proposition.
Room for improvement
Getting through this week without any injuries would be a great start! Otherwise Richmond lacked composure and polish at times despite leaving it all out on the field and general maximising its chances in front of goal (other than that costly Rhyan Mansell poster in the fourth term).

What they got right
Showed much more intent
Richmond showed much more intent on Thursday night against Carlton than they did the week prior against Gold Coast.
From the outset the Tigers had a fair dinkum dip which was in stark contrast to the first half in the Suns loss. To do that off a five-day break and then stay in the game until the end was a monumental achievement.
While some of their skills left a lot to be desired, you cannot question their intent - particularly through the midfield - which kept them in the game until the very end.
Clearance and contested possession game
The Tigers are usually beaten around the footy but managed to better the Blues in some key areas.
They won clearances (35-29), centre clearances (13-10) and contested possessions (142-131) against a Carlton side who has been dominant in those areas in recent times.
It was a good sign considering they lost one of their better clearance players in Dion Prestia early.
What they got wrong
Skill errors proved costly
The Tigers fumbled a bit in the clinches when the game was there to be won.
They also chose the wrong option a few times when entering 50 late in proceedings, which denied them the chance to conjure a potential match-winning goal.
As mentioned, the effort was there but it was just a lack of clinical skills and decisions which in the end denied them from pinching the points from the Blues.

Hope Ooze only gave Cripps 2 votes. He gets clearances but the number of times he throws it is incomprehensible

The one in the goal square that was the assist for the goal in the last was obvious just based on his motion even without seeing a proper replay.
