These basketballers are a complete waste of time IMO - should be targeting the Paddys....at least they can kick.... :shh
-
Hope he has picked up a footy before.
-
Should target both even we haven’t had much luck with either
-
Wait a minute, he just hurt his back and is out for a year…. ????

Richmond has added Perth Wildcats basketballer Oliver Hayes-Brown to its list for the 2024 AFL season.
Hayes-Brown, a powerfully built 208cm and 114kg athlete, will join the Club as a Category B Rookie.
Given his size and transferrable traits to the game, the 23-year-old Victorian was recommended for a code-switch to AFL.
Hayes-Brown blew Wildcats fans away with his physicality and strong rebound ability early in his NBL career but was starved of minutes on the court in recent years.
The 208cm prospect trained with the AFL Tigers at the Swinburne Centre on occasions in the latter parts of this season, showing promising skill acquisition signs and an excellent willingness to learn.
Hayes-Brown said he was “super excited” about the opportunity.
“I have always loved my footy, and I have got to an age now where I thought if I don’t switch now, I never will,” he said.
“There is a great group of guys here, and just being a part of the Richmond Football Club is super amazing.”
Richmond General Football Talent Blair Hartley said that Hayes-Brown’s athletic profile made him an ideal Category B Rookie.
“We are excited about the upside in Oliver’s game and have great confidence in his ability to work hard and get the best out of himself,” Hartley said.
“Bringing Oliver in is very exciting, and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve working closely with our coaches and new teammates in a full-time football environment.”
Richmond has had success with Category B Rookie’s in the past with Ivan Soldo, a premiership and career AFL player.
Mate Colina, who played VFL in 2022 before injury ruined his 2023 season, also remains on the Club’s list.

Little nugget in this:
Richmond Category B rookie Oliver Hayes-Brown played his first senior Aussie Rules game ~ever~ for Old Ivanhoe.
Coach Jarrod Gieschen said he competed well against Camberwell skipper Gus Milham (210ishcm + had 110 hitouts in a game last year).

Looking at Play HQ, can't really see how he's going. Checked a few games, not named in the best players. Anyone know how he's going?

Forgive me being so naive, but why wouldn't he be playing VFL level?

Forgive me being so naive, but why wouldn't he be playing VFL level?
Nearly all cat b rookies start playing lower League's
In Oliver's case he hasn't played AFL at any level since he was kid; like under 13s
So he needs time to develop, VFL isn't the place at this time

lol so at age what 23 or 24 we get him and then we have to teach him for 5 or so years, to get what from him if he even makes it? afew years.
What a waste. How many ex basketballers have actually gone on to be good afl players genuine q.

Your point being. Is Ivan actually a good player? ::)
Maybe i have to admit on this one im wrong, OHB has done as Much as Samson in one Vfl AS as Ryan has done in his time with us. Fmd 13 disposals when was the last time Samson had that many lol. Did he take a contested mark sheesh maybe Samson needs to take some pointers.

There are so many basketball players in the afl. Not all are rucks. Please, do some actual research.

Richmond Category B rookie pick-up Oliver Hayes-Brown produced another impressive performance in just his fourth game at VFL level against Northern Bullants last Sunday.
The 208cm former basketballer was a strong contributor in the VFL Tigers’ massive 95-point win with 13 disposals, three marks, six clearances and 38 hit-outs.
In his four games of VFL football, he is averaging 13.0 disposals, 5.5 clearances and 29.7 hit-outs.
Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris paid tribute to Hayes-Brown following last Sunday’s clash with the Northern Bullants.
“It was nice for him not to have to come up against a 210cm ruckman like he did last week (Carlton’s Alex Mirkov). He’s played against some pretty experienced ruckmen in his short career, and he had a bit more size on his side than his opposition today.” Morris told Richmond Media.
“His understanding and his reading of the game seems to be getting better and better each week.
“Really proud of the work he’s putting in. And he should be proud of himself because he’s turned into a really vital part of our team really quickly for us.
“It’s exciting.”

I said it in the vfl match thread but just give this guy a game or 2 this season. Literally nothing to lose. Samson got another 3 years so it’s not like we need to see as much of him as possible so we can make an informed decision.

As he's category B, he will get another year anyways if he doesnt already have another year locked in already. Can't see them playing him TBH
