This will be ugly IMO.
Their slick young kids will carve us up. Worse than Port.
-
Larkey to run through our turnstile tackles all day, their mids will cut us to pieces...Grundy will just take the pee out of Nank....McDonald, McLean & Amarty to kick at least a dozen between them.... :help
-
This is a bad time to be getting the Swans .
I’m just waiting for Yze’s promise that we will be “ hard to play against “ - although it’s hard to be competitive when you’re forced to make 6 changes every week.
At the moment it’s all about small wins .
-
Expecting a thumping from the swans
With no pressure their mids will rip us apart.

I’d say we’ve been hard to play against 8/12 quarters this year so far

Richmond v Sydney Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
27 March 2024
The winless Richmond hosts the undefeated Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.
Adem Yze is still searching for his first win as Tigers coach, coming close against Carlton in Round 1 before pushing Port Adelaide almost all of the way last weekend.
The Tigers have already been hit with a number of injuries with the likes of Dion Prestia (hamstring), Jacob Hopper (knee), Josh Gibcus (ACL) and Jack Graham (quad) sidelined for at least multiple weeks, making things tougher for a rebuilding group.
Despite the likes of Callum Mills (shoulder), Luke Parker (broken arm), Taylor Adams (knee) and Harry Cunningham (concussion) being unavailable right now, things are much rosier in the Harbour City.
John Longmire’s Swans are one of two teams who boast a 3-0 record right now and look to be one of the most dangerous outfits in the AFL at this early stage of the season.
Isaac Heeney is in career-best form as a midfielder, forming a damaging group alongside Chad Warner and Errol Gulden, with specks of Tom Papley. If this formidable unit is up and running it is likely to provide a massive headache for the undermanned on-ball group of the Tigers.
They had six multiple goal kickers against Essendon last week and it is their amount of attacking assets, some of which run through the middle, that could be too much for the Tigers to handle.
In Richmond’s forward line, Tom Lynch was too bad to be true against the Power when second-up so expect a much more aggressive showing from him. Dustin Martin did not spend enough time at centre bounces last weekend which is a scenario that Yze might ponder against the Swans.
While the Tigers have huffed and puffed across the last two weekends and have been solid in patches, you just get the feeling the Swans are a seriously good side.
They Bloods are in very decent nick right now and should get the job done on the ‘G for the second time this season.
Tip: Sydney by 24 points.

Tigers’ burning question: Have the Tigers really been that bad, or are they exactly where we thought they would be?
Gold Coast, Carlton and Port Adelaide are the three sides Richmond have bravely challenged so far this season, but to no avail come the final siren. Three good halves, equally matched with three bang average halves has cost the Tigers four points that they might’ve deserved from one of their three quality opponents. Not to mention, the side hailing from Punt Rd has been decimated with injuries the last fortnight.
It comes in a season where almost nobody expected anything from Adem Yze’s side - they were a popular pick to join West Coast, North Melbourne and Hawthorn in the bottom four, and are only percentage away from exactly that position.
All things considered; it makes the commentary from Footy Classified’s Caroline Wilson on Monday night somewhat peculiar, noting that the club doesn’t need to “bottom out”. “I just don’t buy your (Footy Classified host Craig Hutchison) doom and gloom and bottoming out scenario you think clubs have to do — I don’t think Richmond has to do that,” Wilson said. “The point is, I just don’t think you go back to the well as low as Hawthorn has. Maybe Hawthorn needed to ... but I don’t know if Richmond are in that situation.”
Given the Tigers have played three clubs in good form each round, their fight each match has brought far more attention on their bravery to get within touching distance, opposed to questions over their need to rebuild. For most, Richmond are sitting in the position most expected after Round 2, with another chance to match it with the best against Sydney on Sunday.

CERTAINTIES FOR SUNDAY FOOTY - Richmond versus Sydney
Andrew Slevison
SEN
30 March 2024
Lynch to kick 2+ goals and take 4+ marks
Tom Lynch was too bad to be true against Port Adelaide last week.
He may have suffered from second-up syndrome in his second game back after almost a year on the sidelines, but his numbers simply weren’t good enough for a gun key forward (1 goal and 0 marks).
The last time Lynch played against Sydney in Round 3, 2021 he helped himself to 3.3 and took eight marks and Tigers fans will be hopping he can have a similar impact this Sunday.
After kicking two goals and taking four marks when returning against Carlton in Round 1, we’re backing Lynch to return to that sort of stats line against the Swans.
Warner and Gulden to combine for at least 45 touches
Chad Warner and Errol Gulden have both had a great start to the 2024 season.
Warner has tallied 26, 27, and 28 disposals in his three games while Gulden has finished with 20, 30 and 24.
Richmond’s midfield allowed Port Adelaide’s star on-ballers Zak Butters and Connor Rozee to combine for 62 touches last week and we get the feeling the Swans pair might do something similar.
Just in case one of them has a subpar game, we’re lowering their combined total to 45 disposals but we’re confident they will get more.

Baker to Mansell. Goal :gotigers
Blow the siren :snidegrin
-
Two basic turnovers. Sonsie (I think) underkick to Lynch and then Shai's lazy underkick straight to a Swan on the wing. Cost us a goal in the end.
-
Diabolic free to Amartey? What the legitimate F
-
Hit your bloody targets :banghead.
-
Diabolic free to Amartey? What the legitimate F
Amartey didn't take possession/fumbled so Miller got pinged. Unlucky.
-
Drop punt there, Marlion :facepalm.
Not doing the basics just kills us.
-
Bad turnover by the Swans in d50.
Shai got the bounce in the goalsquare and goals :gotigers.
Rich 2.1-13
Syd 1.1-7
-
Nice long penetrating kick by Lefau allowed Lynch to mark that. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.1-19
Syd 1.1-7
-
A second soft goal to the Swans from a dumb/bad turnover :banghead.
-
Good pressure. Mansell wins the HTB free on 50. Gets to the line but touched.
20 - 13
-
Mansell #betterthancumberland
-
Balta's athleticism saved that. Lefau tripped and gets his first goal in AFL :highclap :gotigers
Rich 4.2-26
Syd 2.1-13
-
Marlion intercepts in the middle and goes out wide to Lynch who takes the contested mark 40 out. Misses.
27 - 13.
Siren.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 4.3-27
Sydney 2.1-13
Goals: Lynch, Manselll, Bolton, Lefau.
Good effort and pressure so far. Need to keep it up.
-
Really liked that attack on the footy by sonsie just before. More of that young fella!
-
RIchmond takes a two-goal lead into quarter-time thanks to their strength in the contest. The Tigers lead contested possessions over the Swans by 11 and clearances by six; most importantly, they have ten more contested possessions and four more clearances than the Swans in their forward half.

D.Rioli 12 disposals

50m that was barely 35 ::).

Costly fumble by Mansell. We were out.
-
Costly fumble by Mansell. We were out.
Yep every now and then his good skill shows up and then gets replaced with his normally average ability
-
Poor defending on a slow play :banghead.
-
Good contesting at HF. Mansell finds Baker 30 out. Misses.
34 - 25
-
Nank very lucky after that brainfade. Thank Floss for saving us there.
Sonsie snap misses.
35 - 25
-
Taranto flying shot misses too. We need to take these chances.
36 - 26
-
Really blowing our chances in front of goal and they are nailing everything
-
Too easy. Can't allow Warner to mark that. Opened us up.
37 - 32
-
Too easy. Can't allow Warner to mark that. Opened us up.
37 - 32
We had 2v1. Whoever went up just needed to contest rather than go for the hero intercept mark.
-
Making too many basic mistakes on and off the ball. The story of where we are now.
-
Missing open targets.
Dropping uncontested marks.
:banghead
-
How poo is McIntosh and Mansell. FMD they are useless
-
Another wasted chance.
38 - 40
I think that's five straight behinds.
-
Got to keep playing sonsie.
Haven't hated Dow today but also not overly inspired.
Balta in the forward line looks like a fail today.
-
Terrible Tiges. To allow a small to mark that inside 50 with less than 30 secs to go :banghead
-
My God that hurts.
So many wasted opportunities.
I'd have preferred it if Rioli and KMac had just run more and had a shot instead of kicking so deep to Lynch 2v1
-
Swans player did everything he could to not receive that handball on the goal line :banghead
-
Half-time
Richmond 4.3 5.9-39
Sydney 2.1 7.5-47
Goals: Lynch, Mansell, Bolton, Lefau, Baker.
The old cliche - Bad kicking is bad footy! :banghead
Our forward structure in the last 10 mins just fell away too.
-
Terrible Tiges. To allow a small to mark that inside 50 with less than 30 secs to go :banghead
Been typical Richmond for the last 4 seasons
Junk time goals ...
Week after week after
-
Swans player did everything he could to not receive that handball in the goal line :banghead
Just proves what a BS decision Broad copped against the Suns.
-
stuffen pathetic quarter of footy. Too many poo players that are slow, lazy and panic under pressure.
-
Terrible Tiges. To allow a small to mark that inside 50 with less than 30 secs to go :banghead
Been typical Richmond for the last 4 seasons
Junk time goals ...
Week after week after
Yep. Just symbolic of our continually failure to do the basic schoolboy stuff.
-
Haven't hated Dow today but also not overly inspired.
His lack of defensive effort that allowed Heeney to kick a soft goal was pathetic
Spends far too much time just jogging along letting blokes run past him.
Yeah been better today but still hurting us with his lack of defensive pressure. Some efforts are just embarrassing
-
I've seen enough of Dow. Will not make it. Is just tooooo soft for AFL. We need to trade him as soon as possible
-

Tom Brown is a player
:cheers :cheers :cheers
Don’t think people realise just how good he could be
You’re onto it TK
-
Our pressure has been excellent this game.
Why it wasn't like this from our first match is strange.
It doesn't seem to be difficult to get even this bunch to extract the digit.
Pressure should always be non negotiable attribute of our team no matter who plays in our jumper.

Helps not having snails out there like some of the older blokes
-
Gee that was crap by Bolton
-
Too cute Shai and it cost us a goal.
-
Just kick the ball!
-
Sitting duck and we go high with the tackle :scream.
-
Anyone else ever notice that oppos get significantly longer time and more lateral movement before the umps call play on and our blokes basically receive the ball and look sideways and it's play on?
-
No pressure when we go in F50 and the Swans are rebounding with ease.
-
Our skills are killing us and their skill is getting them back into the game.
-
Not doing the percentage basics again and another turnover :banghead.
-
Rabbits in the headlights this quarter. Lost our heads.
-
Thank gawd for Floss.

Shai goal :gotigers
Understatement to say we needed that.

Hope Lynch's foot is okay.

He's done his foot again. :help

Lynch going off limping :-\.

Banks subbed on.

A win without Dusty. Do we hope he is injured for a few more games?
-
A great win because it was many of the cubs who stood up against a top side.
-
A win without Dusty. Do we hope he is injured for a few more games?
No
-
Some terrible football there.
Kicking to contests and deep forward when they should have just killed the clock and flooded back.
Hope Lynch is OK.
Best game I have seen MRJ play for us. Gee whiz!
Shove it up your ass Papley you little bee I tee see h
-
Not a big fan of the Pickett/Kmac wing combo especially give where we are at, but they certainly earned their spots today and neck week, particularly Pickett.

Done it once WP
Let’s see him do it 10 more times this year
But today was a hugely positive sign

MRJ was absolutely brilliant in the defensive aspects if his game. But his skills are so poor that it undoes a lot of the great work and defensive pressure.
Unfortunately his skills have not improved one iota which is very disappointing.

Get your point Damo but today he got freed up a bit and was allowed to move outside of F50
Made a huge difference to his game IMHO

Definitely had a few but for the most part was hitting his targets today.
-
What a difference a few kids having a dip makes!
Seth Campbell was fantastic all game, MRJ was dynamic & dangerous, Brown plays like an old steady head, LeFau showed plenty of useful tricks, Sonsie did some very nice things too. We read the tempo well today too, pretty rare stuff for us. Retained possession well in our back half & even looked skilled clearing the back line at times.
A bit of run, lots of guts & we looked like a side today ... :clapping
-
So proud . What a win . And for all you Mansell knockers, this kid can play. He set the scene early and showed no fear.
MJR. WELL DONE!!! made a few mistakes but otherwise showed why he is important for our team.
Sad about Lynch, he was showing ominous signs
-
A couple of glaring errors & missed soda aside MRJ once again demonstrated how important he is to our pressure & defensive standards...no coincidence it was non-existent last week when he was out...good to see him actually breaking tackles and getting around defenders too...... :clapping

Brilliant stuff, MRJ great, Dow improved as well, but gee the footy gods were in our side with favourable bounces, still take it all.

Have to give a shout out to our Captain
Thought he did really well against Grundy

Absolutely loved the manic pressure- best win since the comeback against Brisbane in 2022 .
That one was a ripper.
Took my 8 year old with me which I don't often get to do due to fixtures etc.
Felt bad for him because we were getting smacked and I started getting potty mouthed but then the comeback was insane.
Have never lost a match I've taken him too!

What they got right
Immense pressure
Richmond’s pressure rating had been down in previous weeks.
That all changed on Sunday when they hit top gear in that regard, constantly forcing Sydney into making uncharacteristic mistakes.
Executing chase-down tackles, being hard to play against around the stoppage and consistent corralling in tight situations made life tough for the Swans.
It was comfortably the Tigers’ best pressure rating so far this year, particularly after half-time.
What was a focal point during the week set the scene from the first bounce and continued until the very end, serving as the hallmark for the club’s first win under Adem Yze.
Composure in big moments from inexperienced Tigers
The young group could have been forgiven for faltering in the big moments against a formidable outfit.
However, they did just the opposite and were able to remain composed.
Maurice Rioli Jnr recovered from a few down moments to bring himself into the contest late with some top-quality composure.
The likes of Rhyan Mansell, Mykelti Lefau and Seth Campbell up forward, Thomson Dow in the middle, and Tom Brown and Ben Miller down back all stood up when asked and helped contribute greatly to the win.
The experienced Tom Lynch (knee injury) and Liam Baker found themselves on the bench late but the less experienced Tigers got the job done in the clinches.
The quelling of Gulden
Errol Gulden still had 25 disposals but he went at just 60 per cent efficiency, which is well below his season and career average.
The Tigers made a point of getting at Gulden whenever he had the ball in his hands and they were often able to upset his customary pinpoint delivery.
While he did find targets at times, his overall influence was quelled by the constant pressure which underpinned their victory.
Defence set up around Vlastuin
The Tigers were able to again make Nick Vlastuin the central point of their defence.
Vlastuin finished with a game-high 15 intercept possessions (Daniel Rioli was next with 12), a game-high 13 marks and 29 disposals (one off his career best) in a superb defensive display.
He’s been close before, but Vlastuin is now well on his way to a maiden All-Australian blazer in 2024.
What they got wrong
Fundamental skills
The Tigers were good value for a half-time lead but just let themselves down with some fundamental errors.
Simple dropped marks, missed handballs and poorly executed kicks under seemingly no pressure were flittered through the victory.
The second half was not immune to costly errors either.
Those fundamental shortcomings would not impact the result in the end but it denied the Tigers scores and allowed the Swans to counter the other way.
Tidy those up and Yze will be a much happier man.
Conceded six goals on the trot
Just as the Tigers were getting on top, they allowed the Swans right back in it.
From the sixth-minute mark of the second quarter to the second-minute mark of the third, Richmond’s opponents booted six straight goals to gain ascendency.
It was the fourth time this season that Yze’s side conceded four or more goals in a run (which included 11 against the Suns in Opening Round). Thankfully they returned serve with five of their own in a 15-minute patch against the Swans.
Other than those lapses they’ve been largely competitive so it should be a key point to focus on.

Report Card: Round 3
Will Faulkner, Jack Jovanovski, Ben Cotton, Courtney Walsh and Dylan Bolch
Foxsports
2 April 2024
RICHMOND
They’re on the board! The Tigers got their first win under Adem Yze in epic scenes for the yellow and black army, upsetting the previously undefeated Swans on Easter Sunday at the MCG. Despite being without an array of stars including Dustin Martin, the Tigers overcame the odds and then some in a “win for the ages,” as put by former Demons skipper Garry Lyon, as their young brigade stepped up to the challenge. It was proof that any team that brings endless effort and energy over four quarters is capable against anyone, with the Tigers relentless with their pressure. The only downside was hamstring concern to Tom Lynch to likely leave another star on the sidelines, while Liam Baker could be was cited by the MRO for a hit on Lewis Melican.
In the votes
Nick Vlasutin was enormous in defence with 19 disposals including going at 100 per cent efficiency. Tim Taranto had the ball on a string, racking up 35 touches with six tackles and a goal. Baker (21 touches, six tackles, two goals) and Shai Bolton (25 possessions, two goals) were also busy for Adem Yze’s side. And before exiting the game late in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury that’ll unfortunately cost him 2-3 months, Lynch looked back to his best form with 3.2 in front of goal.
Room for improvement
Going a week without losing important players?
