I’m just waiting for Yze’s promise that we will be “ hard to play against “ - although it’s hard to be competitive when you’re forced to make 6 changes every week.

At the moment it’s all about small wins .

The winless Richmond hosts the undefeated Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

Adem Yze is still searching for his first win as Tigers coach, coming close against Carlton in Round 1 before pushing Port Adelaide almost all of the way last weekend.

The Tigers have already been hit with a number of injuries with the likes of Dion Prestia (hamstring), Jacob Hopper (knee), Josh Gibcus (ACL) and Jack Graham (quad) sidelined for at least multiple weeks, making things tougher for a rebuilding group.

Despite the likes of Callum Mills (shoulder), Luke Parker (broken arm), Taylor Adams (knee) and Harry Cunningham (concussion) being unavailable right now, things are much rosier in the Harbour City.

John Longmire’s Swans are one of two teams who boast a 3-0 record right now and look to be one of the most dangerous outfits in the AFL at this early stage of the season.

Isaac Heeney is in career-best form as a midfielder, forming a damaging group alongside Chad Warner and Errol Gulden, with specks of Tom Papley. If this formidable unit is up and running it is likely to provide a massive headache for the undermanned on-ball group of the Tigers.

They had six multiple goal kickers against Essendon last week and it is their amount of attacking assets, some of which run through the middle, that could be too much for the Tigers to handle.

In Richmond’s forward line, Tom Lynch was too bad to be true against the Power when second-up so expect a much more aggressive showing from him. Dustin Martin did not spend enough time at centre bounces last weekend which is a scenario that Yze might ponder against the Swans.

While the Tigers have huffed and puffed across the last two weekends and have been solid in patches, you just get the feeling the Swans are a seriously good side.

They Bloods are in very decent nick right now and should get the job done on the ‘G for the second time this season.

Tip: Sydney by 24 points.

Tigers’ burning question: Have the Tigers really been that bad, or are they exactly where we thought they would be?

Gold Coast, Carlton and Port Adelaide are the three sides Richmond have bravely challenged so far this season, but to no avail come the final siren. Three good halves, equally matched with three bang average halves has cost the Tigers four points that they might’ve deserved from one of their three quality opponents. Not to mention, the side hailing from Punt Rd has been decimated with injuries the last fortnight.

It comes in a season where almost nobody expected anything from Adem Yze’s side - they were a popular pick to join West Coast, North Melbourne and Hawthorn in the bottom four, and are only percentage away from exactly that position.

All things considered; it makes the commentary from Footy Classified’s Caroline Wilson on Monday night somewhat peculiar, noting that the club doesn’t need to “bottom out”. “I just don’t buy your (Footy Classified host Craig Hutchison) doom and gloom and bottoming out scenario you think clubs have to do — I don’t think Richmond has to do that,” Wilson said. “The point is, I just don’t think you go back to the well as low as Hawthorn has. Maybe Hawthorn needed to ... but I don’t know if Richmond are in that situation.”

Given the Tigers have played three clubs in good form each round, their fight each match has brought far more attention on their bravery to get within touching distance, opposed to questions over their need to rebuild. For most, Richmond are sitting in the position most expected after Round 2, with another chance to match it with the best against Sydney on Sunday.

Lynch to kick 2+ goals and take 4+ marks

Tom Lynch was too bad to be true against Port Adelaide last week.

He may have suffered from second-up syndrome in his second game back after almost a year on the sidelines, but his numbers simply weren’t good enough for a gun key forward (1 goal and 0 marks).

The last time Lynch played against Sydney in Round 3, 2021 he helped himself to 3.3 and took eight marks and Tigers fans will be hopping he can have a similar impact this Sunday.

After kicking two goals and taking four marks when returning against Carlton in Round 1, we’re backing Lynch to return to that sort of stats line against the Swans.

Warner and Gulden to combine for at least 45 touches

Chad Warner and Errol Gulden have both had a great start to the 2024 season.

Warner has tallied 26, 27, and 28 disposals in his three games while Gulden has finished with 20, 30 and 24.

Richmond’s midfield allowed Port Adelaide’s star on-ballers Zak Butters and Connor Rozee to combine for 62 touches last week and we get the feeling the Swans pair might do something similar.

Just in case one of them has a subpar game, we’re lowering their combined total to 45 disposals but we’re confident they will get more.
