Honouring Generations: Rioli Jnr creates Richmond’s 2024 Dreamtime jumper

Richmond youngster Maurice Rioli Jnr has designed the Club's 2024 Dreamtime at the 'G guernsey with his mother, Alberta Kerinauia.

By Richmond Media

Richmond is proud to reveal its 2024 AFL Dreamtime guernsey, designed by Maurice Rioli Jnr and his mother, Alberta Kerinauia.

The design speaks of the deep connection between the Rioli family and the Richmond Football Club.

Maurice Rioli Senior played 118 matches for Richmond and was a Norm Smith and Jack Dyer Medallist.

The design features two family totems - the turtle (father) and the crocodile (mother).

“We all get our totems from our dad’s side of the family,” Rioli Jnr explained.

Maurice Rioli Jnr and his Mother Alberta Kerinauia reveal the 2024 Richmond Dreamtime guernsey.

“We have all the seen the turtle before from Daniel’s (2019) Dreamtime guernsey... So basically, I did a (Rioli) design, and Mum did a (Kerinauia) design, and then we put it together.

“My mum is an artist as well, so I thought I would get her to do it with me. Obviously, she is special to me, so why not do it together? I can’t wait to put it on.”

The spears featured on the back of the jumper depict those used for hunting or battle in the Tiwi Islands. The spears have been used to provide food and provide for families; they represent Maurice’s ancestors going into battle to defend their family.

“The line that runs through the sash is the path that my father created for me, along with the support and help from my mother,” Rioli Jnr said.

“The patterns on the side signify the numerous people that I have met, and that have helped me on this journey.”

This design will have special meaning to Maurice’s home community of Pirlangimpi, located on the northwest coast of Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands.

It will also have significance to Maurice’s previous Club’s, the Imalu Tigers (Pirlangimpi), and NTFL Club St Mary’s (Darwin).

Richmond will wear Rioli Jnr’s design for the Dreamtime at the ‘G match against Essendon on May 25. Members are reminded that Dreamtime at the 'G is a fully-ticketed match, which means all general admission members must upgrade their ticket to secure their entry.

Tigers’ burning question: Can they at least show something?

It’s been a seriously grim run for the Tigers, with losses by 119 points to Brisbane and 91 points to the Western Bulldogs over the last fortnight to slide to 1-9 overall in what looms as a long season for first-year coach Adem Yze. Granted, Richmond has been savaged by injuries worse than any club, but it doesn’t excuse some of the poor performances it’s produced. No one is expecting the Tigers to knock off the in-form Bombers, but fans and the footy world alike would at least want to see something. Whether that’s a more competitive effort overall or a youngster showing something or doing something special , the Tigers are crying out for possibility in some shape or form to give supporters something to get excited about.

Richmond v Essendon Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
23 May 2024

Dreamtime at the ‘G feels a little different in 2024, a year on from Damien Hardwick’s final game in charge of Richmond.

The Tigers are hurting with a crippling injury list and on the back of a massive 119-point defeat at the hands of Brisbane.

Adem Yze has to deal with 18 unavailable players (as of Wednesday afternoon), but could get a few players back this week, including Liam Baker.

Essendon enters this as unbackable favourites, for the first time we can remember in a Dreamtime game, and rightly so.

They’re playing a game of substance under Brad Scott which has them sitting second on the ladder (pre-round) with a 7-1-2 record.

The Bombers are on a three-game winning streak and six game unbeaten run which should at least extend into next week.

Form and personnel-wise, it’s impossible to tip against the Dons who have a stranglehold on this game.

Richmond will want to provide a bit more effort and intent than has been shown over the past fortnight, and although the Tigers might be more competitive, it’s hard to see them getting too close.

While the Dons haven’t really blown teams away this year, they might get that opportunity at the MCG on Saturday night.

Tip: Essendon by 52 points.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 11 - Richmond versus Essendon

Andrew Slevison
SEN
25 May 2024

Martin to have 20+ disposals, kick 1+ goal

Dustin Martin has an excellent Dreamtime record against Essendon.

The two-time Yiooken Award winner has averaged 28.2 disposals and kicked 10 goals in his last 10 appearances on this enormous occasion.

While Martin is not quite what he used to be, he still loves the big stage and in front of a packed MCG we expect him to get busy for the Tigers.

‘Dusty’ should pick up 20 touches and kick a goal in the 2024 edition of Dreamtime at the ‘G.

Wright to kick 2+ goals, take 4+ marks

Peter Wright returned to top form with a haul of four goals while taking nine marks against North Melbourne last weekend.

He’ll take that crisp performance into the Dreamtime clash with the Tigers where he might get an opportunity to have another strong showing.

He has kicked two or more goals in five of six games this season, averaging two majors per game, while also averaging a tick under five marks.

Wright stands at 203cm while Richmond’s tallest defender is Ben Miller at 198cm so the Bombers tall does have an advantage.

We’re expecting the Dons to win comfortably and for Wright to kick at least two goals and take at least four marks at the MCG on Saturday night.

Ryan 1 mark, Nank 0 marks close to 3 qtr time.

Seriously can one of these guys take a bail out mark down the line or should we just let redman and Ridley mark everything all night long.

Our forward line is crap, but we were not taking off the few 'talls' we still have fit due to structure. Cumberland was spudding it up every time he went near the ball tonight across 4 quarters while his opponent Ridley had 31 disposals plus 14 intercepts and was BOG tonight.

Effort showed tonight.
Yze on bench is a good thing. Needed to be down there a month ago.
Balta in defense is way over due (yes I know he was injured) but it's no surprise we weren't smacked by 100 when he is there.
Dow and short killed us tonight. Can't believe their turn overs.
And I've always loved sonsie but can someone tell me has he always been soft or is he out of position or what? Though he way better in his debut year.
Anyways better game to watch than last week and still chasing first round pick 😎

Final Score

Richmond   3.3    6.7     9.10    10.14-74
Essendon   3.3    7.7    10.12    12.14-86

Goals: Martin 3, Lefau 2, Bolton 2, McIntosh, Pickett, Ralphsmith

Tried hard and at least made a game of it tonight but we're too crap to win especially with our long injury list. Defence held up (barring some brainfades from our kick-ins) and our midfield won the clearances by +10 (you should win with that number). However, we have no proper key forwards and our small forwards are continually in no man's land, so our F50 entries and the connection between the mids and forwards sucks. We left so many goals on the table tonight (hello pathetic goalkicking!). Anyway, bring on the draft.

Agree re: Balta. Has to stay there unconditionally. We have no choice but to play Kosi forward because Lefau being the only key forward is laughable and about as bad as playing Jack on his own last year.

I've seen enough of Dow to play any other fit player.

Short should be traded.

Sonsie playing on some HFF role which stinks, should be taking Dow's spot in the middle where he dominates in the VFL.

At least they had a dip but Dons were just too good for quality and structure. Looked out-coached and out-classed most of the night IMO.

Only positives tonight. The negatives are all in our injury list.
We now know Sampson isn’t ever going to make it but I would grant Cumberland a mulligan as I can see a role for him in the forward line.
Hugo was ….. pretty good and worth persisting with. Mids did well at clearance and backs were strong after Broady forgot he had Stringer for an opponent in that first qtr.

We struggled to move the ball cleanly between the 50 metre arcs.  8 goals conceded from turnovers is basically the game.

That changes when our outs are back - which we don’t want. We want a top 3 pick. Bigger picture stuff.

McAuliffe looks real as a prospect. Miller can hold his own down back.  Loved Shai and Dusty’s energy tonight. Meatie industrious.

Miller was shyte, Sampson won't play well until Nank is gone or not playing - was better in the last quarter - probably once he realised he wasn't going to be subbed off- still looks a better tap ruck than Nank has ever been....actually hits it to his own mids....was one of Nank's increasingly rare good ones for the year though... :shh

Apparently before last night Miller had only lost one marking contest all year....guess the key word is "contest" because usually he's out of the contest and trailing 5 metres behind  his opponent  or in the wrong spot altogether by the time the ball arrives...this would also go a fair way to explain Young's similar one on one stats last year and why you shouldn't just take most stats at face value... :shh

We graded every player in this year’s electric Dreamtime clash.

Richmond

Dustin Martin: A+

Who said Dusty was finished? Kicked a goal of the year nomination in the first, looked as good as ever closing in on his 300th game. Three goals, 22 touches.

Shai Bolton: A

As lively as you’ll ever see. Covered the ground superbly, two goals to go with his six marks and 16 touches. A very unfortunate injury late ruled him out of the final term, potentially sealing the result.

Toby Nankervis: A

Played a pivotal role in keeping the Tiges in the game. Led the game with eight clearances, dominated Goldstein in the ruck with 43 hit outs.

Thomson Dow: B+

Looked really strong in the contest, a good performance. Five clearances, 21 touches.

Hugo Ralphsmith: B+

Loved his run, has the potential to develop into a real gun on the wing. Kicked a goal late to cap off a good game.

Marlion Pickett: B+

Looked incredibly lively in the 50 early besides a few shaky moments. Three missed opportunities but had to be there to earn them, made it count in the third. Rolled back and looked composed.

Dion Prestia: B+

27 touches, played a big role in the midfield dominance.

Kamdyn McIntosh: B

50th career goal was a ripper.

Seth Campbell: B

Putting together a nice season, covered the ground and pressured well.

Daniel Rioli: B

Plenty of dash, not the most efficient but a strong game, nonetheless.

Noah Balta: B

Returned to defensive duties, rotated with Miller on Peter Wright and had some big moments in the final term.

Nathan Broad: B-

Six marks and nine intercept possessions, held his own.

Liam Baker: B-

His importance in this Richmond side cannot be understated. Had a few top notch moments through the middle.

Ben Miller: B-

Played a role on Peter Wright, held him goalless.

Kane McAuliffe: B-

Tom Brown: C+

Remains an underrated defender however couldn’t quite impact.

Mykelti Lefau: C+

Took some time to get going but landed a vital double blow in the second term. Otherwise, not much else.

Jayden Short: C+

A few dangerous skill errors early, seven turnovers.

Nick Vlaustin: C

Failed to take a mark until the final term, could not affect the play in the way we know he can.

Tyler Sonsie: C

Samson Ryan: C-

Noah Cumberland: C-

Steely Green: N/A

Came on for Bolton in the final term.

Finally had time to watch the game
Dusty played his best game in ages. Can't fault his game, what's evident is that he can't do it alone anymore. Once Taranto and especially Lynch comes back Dusty will become the Dusty of old.
Short must never play again.

Cumberland is just plain stupid
Pickett seemed to find form

Dow did plenty right, many bag this kid , think his awkward kicking style makes him appear a dud but he is doing plenty right
McAuliffe will be a jet. He's our future

Ryan lacks intensity and effort, no ticker

For a seriously undermanned squad we can't really complain. Honourable losses suck but in these circumstances we can accept it.
Nothing is as it seems and nothing seems as it is.
This season is over , must be used to prepare for the next 5 years

Dons are pretenders. I suspect if we even had just Lynch available off our injury list (or anyone for that matter that could take a mark forward of centre), we would have won that game.

Tend to agree

They've had an incredibly soft draw.

What they got

The spirit was back

After two absolutely disastrous weeks, Richmond simply needed to show some spirit.

It was a massive occasion for Dreamtime against Essendon at the MCG and the Tigers had to bring the effort and intent.

That they absolutely did in a game that they could have pinched but ultimately fell short in.

The Tigers are undermanned due to a crippling injury list and after being battered pillar to post by the Dogs and Lions, they were able to save some face with a competitive and spirited display.

Vintage Dusty

Wasn’t the performance of Dustin Martin nice to see?!

He had 23 touches and kicked three goals - including a remarkable curler in the first quarter - and certainly looked up for the fight.

Martin has a great record in Dreamtime matches as a two-time Yiooken Award winner and again polled votes in the game, finishing third behind Jordan Ridley an Zach Merrett.

It was vintage Dusty and we’re here for it.

Won the clearance battle

There were promising signs in the midfield as the Tigers won the clearance battle.

Led by captain Toby Nankervis (eight clearances), Dion Prestia and Liam Baker (both four clearances), as well as Thomson Dow (five clearances), the Tigers won overall clearances 41-31 thanks to a 12-9 centre clearance ascendency and 29-22 at stoppage clearances.

Despite that, they couldn’t quite turn it into more territory and more shots on goal.

What they got wrong

Repeat entries didn’t mount

There were stages during the game where the Tigers had repeat inside 50s yet couldn’t capitalise.

The Dons were so good at transitioning the ball so quickly from those stoppages and scoring against the run of play.

The sort of stuff that can crush spirit, but the Tigers did remain engaged for the most part.

Inopportune Bolton knock

It’s never a good time to lose a star, but the timing of Shai Bolton’s departure from the field was very inopportune.

At the time the Tigers were down by eight points and playing well. It may have been a different story if he was able to play on.

Yze will be without Bolton for the trip to the Cattery to play Geelong next week, so will need get creative at the selection table.

Low tackle count

Once again, the Tigers had less of the ball only to finish the game with less tackles.

The Dons worked harder for longer, winning the disposal count 400-354 and the tackle count 49-37.

While the spirit did return from a Richmond perspective, the determination and pressure dissipated at stages which invited the Bombers in.
