Richmond v GWS Preview

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
12 July 2024

Richmond has never lost to GWS at the MCG, but that looks likely to change on Sunday afternoon.

In dour winter conditions, it’s going to be hard for the 18th-placed Tigers to kick any semblance of a winning score, given they’re the worst offensive side so far in 2024 – particularly against GWS who kicked 116 last week against Carlton.

In that game, the Giants kicked 14 goals to 3 across the second and third terms and you’d almost expect them to turn it on for a half of footy again to get the job done.

A win here for GWS would send them to 10-7 and help them really rebuild their season.

For Richmond, they’re behind North Melbourne in last by percentage at 2-14 and they probably wouldn’t mind staying there as long as they keep getting some important game time into their youngsters.

It’s not only Richmond that GWS has a problem against at the MCG though, given they’re 1-5 in their last six at the venue including the heartbreaking 2023 Preliminary Final loss to Collingwood.

Surely that form line changes this week though, given the obvious matchup advantages the Giants possess all over the ground.

Tip: GWS by 39 points.

Good set up by Ralphsmith to set up a goal unfortunately the player that shouldn't be captain couldn't capitalise on an easy shot at goal and now it's gone down the other end for a goal to them.

Looks like we might get slaughtered today. Just in all sorts with our defensive structure off our half forward. Look outnumbered everywhere.

Can't kick straight.

Can't/Won't defend the defensive side of contests.

We look okay at the contest with the likes of hopper and Taranto but as soon as it spreads we are stuffed. We’re looking at the team that was happy to lose both Taranto and hopper and we’re seeing why. Very one dimensional and you can only afford one of the two in your midfield at a time

Jack Graham is the definition of a plodder. always looks like he’s running so hard and flat out, whilst other players run straight past/away from him with ease

Quarter time

Richmond   3.4-22
GWS          4.3-27

Goals: Baker, Mansell, Ryan.

4 easy misses: Nank's set shot, and Banks, Mansell and Bolton on the run under no physical pressure. Amateur hour!  :banghead

On the "defensive" side, we all run forward past the contest and no one remains defensive side :facepalm. Allows the Giants to waltz into an open forward line.

We’re actually beating them in a lot of areas but boy is our transition defence absolutely garbage. Has been since 2021 really, these stupid rules that they introduced haven’t helped. Feel like we’re playing with 3-4 less players on field the way they just cut through and have options everywhere.

I don’t see how you can call TT one dimensional. He wins it in the contest, gets clearances, kicks goals, tackles and covers an insane amount of ground.

Half-time

Richmond   3.4    6.7-43
GWS          4.3    9.4-58

Goals: Mansell 2, Baker, Ryan, Bolton, Green.

Our forward line and the connection between our mids and forwards is shambolic. 11 more inside 50s yet we're down by 15 pts.

All 7 behinds were gettable shots.

Goals: Koschitzke 2, Mansell 2, Baker, Ryan, Bolton, Green.

More shots on goal, more inside 50s (by a considerable margin), won clearances (both centre and at stoppages) and won contested possession. We lost because we didn’t make them work hard for their goals at all as evidenced by their 17.6 scoreline. 17 of the easiest goals they’ll ever kick, how many were over the top passes running into an open goal or a set shot within 30m with little to no angle? Our team defence is garbage and whichever assistant is in charge of that should be let go at the end of the season.

Another positive was Steely Greene.

Nothing on Yze today we played well just let down by a certain group. Kids are playing their part obviously not going to get 4 quarters understandably,  but gez I'm filthy at our senior group.

Ditto, disgusted with the effort of some of the senior blokes. In particular our 2 vice captain's out there today. I've been of the belief that Baker is leaving but gee the last couple of weeks the way he's playing it's hard not think he's already checked out.

As for Short. In the final qtr, yes Nanks kick was a average but Short's "effort" was diabolical. It happened right in front of us, no effort just stood there like a statue. I'm sure the media will list him the best because he had high stat numbers but gee his "efforts" for a senior, leader are more often than not unacceptable

Hey Sicily funnily I'm able to watch afl from My Foxtel in Europe. I'm in Poland now and it worked over the weekend.

Every other time I had to pay that watch afl crap, but strangely enough it's working without paying the dogs anything.

Has to be a glitz surely.

RICHMOND

Another in a growing line of valiant Richmond losses this season, as it remains chained to the base of the ladder. While it was bolstered by the return of some experience in form of Dion Prestia, it was once again an experienced side trotted out by Adem Yze on Sunday — and it would appear Tim Taranto is destined for the league’s concussion protocols after a hard fall in a Toby Bedford tackle. In what would be a pleasing result for Yze and his coaching staff, the Tigers owned territory against the Giants — for little reward — as they claimed the inside-50 count 53-36 and clearance tally 39-31 but were a whopping 16 per cent less efficient with their forward entries.

In the votes

Unsurprisingly, Prestia (27 disposals, four tackles, four clearances) was one of Richmond’s best in his return outing, orchestrating the side’s midfield operation and — as he’s best known for — damaging at stoppage. Taranto led the Tigers with 15 contested possessions to go along with his 27 disposals, while Daniel Rioli (26 disposals and a goal) was influential in their fast transition chains.

Room for improvement

Capitalising on their time-in-forward-half dominance and exit from stoppage. The Giants managed 23 scoring shots from their 36 entries, with the likes of Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan (four goals each) getting off the chain far too frequently, while the Tigers generally looked horribly out of place in defensive transition as they scrambled to keep up with GWS’ over-the-back tsunami.

Grade

C

And yet from the coaches box, Nank is seen as being in the best over the last fortnight.
Maybe you need a bigger TV.

Nank did some nice things in the game but he cost us the game  with his decision making and skill errors.
You can't see that, that's your problem
