Shane Dunne appointed Richmond CEO
Richmond Football Club has appointed Aligned Leisure CEO Shane Dunne to be the Club's new Chief Executive Officer.
By Richmond Media
Just now
Richmond Football Club is pleased to announce that Shane Dunne has been appointed as the Club’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Dunne, 42, is the current CEO of Richmond’s fully-owned subsidiary business, Aligned Leisure, which since its inception in 2016, has grown from an organisation of 100 employees, to now having 1800.
A member of the Club’s executive team, Dunne has also overseen Richmond’s education arm, namely the successful Richmond Institute, the pioneering sports education program delivered in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology that has helped over 1,000 graduates enter the sports industry or tertiary studies.
Richmond President John O’Rourke said that in June, the Board spent important time defining the Club's needs and the key attributes we would seek in a new leader and appointed a subcommittee of the Board to work with an external search firm and undertake a thorough selection process over the last two months.
The committee assessed candidates locally and globally, from within and outside the AFL industry before recommending to the Board last week that Dunne be appointed as CEO.
“The Club has entered a transition period, and we need a leader with the dynamism and confidence to harness the talents of our people to both face the immediate challenges, but also capitalise on the opportunities that will present themselves through this next phase,” O’Rourke said.
“In Shane we have a CEO who can develop, communicate with, and galvanise our broad and diverse stakeholder groups, including members, staff, commercial partners, and community groups, while providing trusted guidance and support to the leaders of our AFL and AFLW programs.
“Shane is well known to many – he is a highly valued executive and has consistently demonstrated strong, values driven leadership. His ability to form and communicate a direction for others to align around was a feature of his presentations through the selection process.
“We identified the importance of strong commercial skill to navigate the immediate financial pressures we face and, importantly, the Punt Road Redevelopment project as a key priority for the Club in this next phase.
"Shane has navigated some tough times with the Aligned Leisure business, especially during Covid. Here, his commercial, communication, and stakeholder skills were needed as he actively leaned into the challenges. Many of these experiences and skills have helped prepare him for this role”.
O’Rourke added that being able to appoint an internal candidate as the next CEO was a great testament to outgoing CEO Brendon Gale and the broader Club.
“There is a need for renewal and change, but the fundamentals, values, and strong culture are a legacy to Brendon and his leadership of the existing management team.
“We wish Shane well and are looking forward to the Tiger Army getting to know him because he will be a great leader to everyone who is involved with the Richmond Football Club.”
Dunne has been employed by the Richmond Football Club for the past 10 years. He previously worked at YMCA Victoria for 14 years and was a Board Member with Life Saving Victoria for a maximum term between 2018 and 2024.
The experienced sports administrator was the Event Services Deputy Manager for the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Dunne has a Master of Business Administration, and completed a Negotiation program at Harvard Law School. He has two children Lewis and Mabel with partner Tara

His name had never been mentioned until then. Prior to that it was all about the "Simons"

I hope he and the board has a plan🫣 I did like that the John O’Rourke mentioned they had put some thought into his selection . I like John O’Rouke but he doesn’t seem as comfortable with public speaking as Penny and the great Gary March, I hope this bloke has the special traits to express / sell a well thought out plan internally and externally as the clubs transition we appear lost in the wilderness and open to criticism currently.

i heard somewhere Matthews was Bennys choice, and if true who would decide these things?
He seems out of his depth at this early stage. I heard him in an interview say he has a few weeks to learn things from Benny. He is paid a million and he is still learning. :shh

Yes, Caro reckons Simon Matthews was Benny's preferred choice, succession plan
Who said he's on a million? Pure speculation by a poster on here. I would be very surprised if that's the number
He has a few weeks for a proper handover, what's the big deal? Actually think it is a bit of bonus, time to go through all the sponsors contracts and meet our major partners , the contracts around the redevelopment, footy soft cap and where it's being spent, contracts of staff in the footy dept, budgets for 2025 etc.... I'd be more concerned if he came in and said I know everything get out of my way and threw the baby out with the bath water as they say
Club said from the beginning that they had hired a recruitment firm to be heavily involved in the selection process coupled with directors from the board, Benny was not involved in the selection process at all .... seems like the right way to do things I would have thought
IIRC Frankie, you were one of many on here who heavily criticised the appointment of Peggy O'Neal as President all those years ago and i think it's fair to say you got that criticism very, very wrong.
At least give the bloke a decent run at it rather making a call or suggesting 'he is out of depth at this early stage"
-
I was one saying appoint from outside, but listening to him and his track record is impressive. I like how he identified straight away we need to lift our game and improve as a whole.

Dillon was Gills choice also. Looks how that’s playing out

You wouldn’t need to be Einstein to say / identify that

No one currently at the club come out and said it through this year all went missing.

We did finish last, it’s fairly obvious.

Tigers plan to restore the roar
New Richmond CEO Shane Dunne has declared that despite a last-placed finish in 2024, there’s plenty for Yellow and Black barrackers to look forward to.
“Clearly, it’s a disappointing year, and we should be disappointed in the year. We can’t have another year like that with those injuries that crippled us. The upside is, look at the talent that’s come through and had experience at senior level that otherwise wouldn’t have got that,” Dunne said.
“With finishing 18th there’s gifts that are given to us.
“We’re going to have the No. 1 draft pick and, clearly, if some of these trades (Baker, Bolton, Rioli) happen, we’re going to have a very, very strong draft hand – one that we haven’t seen in a long time.
“To be able to rejuvenate our list right now, through the draft, it’s a perfect time to be doing it, before those concessions (for the new Tasmanian AFL club) come in.
“So, come along for the ride with us.
“We’re going to bring in some incredible talent and you’re going to be able to watch them grow and develop, right in front of our eyes at the MCG.
“These people playing and coming through together creates for a long, sustainable period of growth.
“Clearly, we’re going to bring in some young talent, but also, don’t forget, we haven’t had (Tom) Lynch), we haven’t had (Josh) Gibcus.
“To bring that sort of bookend-talent in, that automatically changes the way our side looks coming out of defence and moving into the forward line.
“So, I think there’s an uplift there . . .
“I couldn’t be more excited.”

New visionary statement not needed now
Newly-appointed Richmond CEO Shane Dunne will not be emulating his predecessor Brendon Gale and delivering a visionary statement for the Club.
Gale, in 2010, just a few months after taking over as the Tigers’ CEO, released the now famous, bold, 3-0-75 visionary statement – three finals appearances (including one top-four finish) by 2014, zero debt and 75,000 members.
And the extra audacious addition to the visionary statement was that by 2020 Richmond would have a further three premiership cups in its trophy cabinet.
As gloriously prophetic as that turned out to be for the Club, Dunne doesn’t believe a new visionary statement is required now.
“If you think back to the time that was said, it was really about lifting the Club off the canvas,” Dunne said on the Talking Tigers podcast.
“It wasn’t just about premierships, it was also about clearing debt, taking us from 30,000 members to 75,000 members.
“The great legacy that Brendon has left us all now is this stable club. It’s a really strong club.
“So, that type of visionary statement, I’m not sure it’s necessary for this time.
“This is really about getting a list and a football program that can be competing for finals as soon as we possibly can."

He would have been a sensational get
Former Williamstown President as well for a few years and did a phenomenal job.

Damo, while I don’t disagree as Swann is an excellent football administrator, I was keen for young fresh blood - like Benny was when he joined us - to head up the club.
I was hoping it would be from outside the club and preferably outside the AFL which has a sameness about it which different thinking might get us our next competitive advantage.

I get this take and it had genuine merit

Swann was very average before he went up to the Lions
