Fremantle Dockers weighing up tagging Richmond Tigers midfield Tim Taranto in Gather Round clash

Jackson Barrett
The West Australian
11 April 2025

Fremantle are weighing up giving Richmond’s Tim Taranto extra attention on Sunday in a bid to stop him spearheading their young midfield group.

Taranto — the most experienced member of the Tigers’ on-ball brigade — has had matchups with Brisbane’s Josh Dunkley and St Kilda’s Marcus Windhager across the past two weeks.

Windhager — one of the league’s very few genuine taggers — kept him to 20 disposals.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir recognised the importance the 27-year-old has on the Tiger’s midfield ahead of their clash at Barossa Park on Sunday.

“It’s something we will definitely weigh up,” he said.

“We have spoken about that aspect of it already. Him and (Jacob) Hopper do a lot of the heavy lifting in there.

“If we don’t go to (him) we will have some plans around his impact because it has been pretty significant.”

Taranto leads the Tigers for clearances and is their second-highest rated player behind in-form ruckman and skipper Toby Nankervis.

He is also used at a team-high 82 per cent of Richmond’s centre-bounces in a pack that most-often includes Hopper and a mix of young talent including Thomson Dow and Sam Lalor.

Fremantle last week used Jaeger O’Meara to mind Western Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore around stoppages.

Longmuir said he had been impressed by the Tigers sticking in games. Adem Yze’s side stunned Carlton in round one, but have since lost to Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Brisbane.

“They have been in a lot of games and I think sometimes the scoreboard isn’t a reflection of how competitive they’ve been,” Longmuir said.

“I think they set the ground up really well, I think their contest work — off the back of Nank and some of their mature mids — is really solid and some of their young talent looks really impressive.

“They haven’t taken long to adapt to AFL level. They beat Carlton, they played a really good first half against St Kilda, they never gave up last week against Brisbane, so we are going to have to be at their best.”

Richmond coach Adem Yze says he expects the best from underdone Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy

Mitchell Woodcock
The West Australian
Sat, 12 April 2025

Richmond coach Adem Yze is expecting the best of Sean Darcy despite the Fremantle ruckman heading into their Gather Round clash with barely any football under his belt this year.

The Dockers called up Darcy for his first game of 2025, having played only one WAFL game in preparation after knee and ankle injuries hindered his summer.

It comes after Justin Longmuir’s side lost star Luke Jackson for at least the next fortnight because of a hamstring injury he sustained in the win over the Western Bulldogs at the weekend.

Darcy will open his season with a tough task of taking on big Tiger Toby Nankervis, who is in form and was arguably best-on-ground in their season opening win over Carlton.

Yze said there would be no added pressure on Nankervis to perform despite Darcy’s limited preparation as they do battle in the Barossa Valley on Sunday.

“We normally put it on Nank every week to run their ruck ragged but he (Darcy) is a very good player,” he said.

“They wouldn’t be risking their players if they weren’t ready to play so we’re expecting the best of Sean Darcy.

“We just hope the sun is nice and hot tomorrow and we can test their whole team really. They’re quality players that they’ve got in and Nank’s in really good form and it’ll be a great contest.”

Richmond’s young midfield will come up against a powerful outfit in Fremantle who are being well led by an in-form Caleb Serong.

Serong is coming off a season-high 15 clearances and 38 disposals against the Bulldogs to put himself in the frame for the Brownlow Medal.

Yze said he was not only weary of Serong but also Andrew Brayshaw and Hayden Young who would play his first game of the year.

“They’ve got Hayden Young, he dominated against us last year so it’s hard when you try to stop one of them a couple of the others will pop up,” he said.

“We’ll have all those discussions during the game. Whether we start with a tag or we go during the game, but at some stage one of them has got to get some attention.

“They’re great players and we cannot wait.”

The Tigers will also have to contend against a tall Dockers forward line with Jye Amiss, Josh Treacy and Pat Voss all in the line-up.

“We like the height of our forward line. Luke Trainor can play small or tall, Nick Vlastuin can play small and tall and so can Nathan Broad,” he said.

“Brisbane have got a pretty tall forward line and we thought our boys handled themselves really well so we’re not going to change.”

Richmond v Fremantle Preview

Jaiden Sciberras
SEN
12 April 2025

The youthful Tigers have showed plenty of heart at stages in their first four contests.

After claiming a victory nobody thought possible over Carlton, they last put up a performance to be proud of against the Lions with the 90 points the best they've managed since Round 2, 2024.

With the emergence of No.1 pick Sam Lalor (24 disposals, 10 score involvements, four goal assists, two goals), confident performances from youngsters Luke Trainor (19 disposals) and Harry Armstrong (six marks, two goals), Richmond has plenty to look forward to.

The Dockers are back on track in 2025, picking off consecutive wins including a hearty performance against the Bulldogs to climb to the outskirts of the eight. Freo’s talent has started to shine, with Caleb Serong, Josh Treacy and Luke Jackson all firing, although Jackson will miss with a hamstring injury. With former Tiger Shai Bolton fitting in like a glove, Murphy Reid playing like a star on the horizon and the return of Hayden Young, Sean Darcy and Nat Fyfe imminent, coach Justin Longmuir will have stars at his disposal as Freo looks to make a real charge following a staggered start.

Off the back of a respectable showing against the premiers, Richmond will give itself every chance of another scalp at the neutral venue in the Barossa. Adem Yze’s men will take confidence on the road as they look to hijack another four points, but Fremantle has the weapons to put it to bed with relative ease.

Bolton will be a point of interest against his old club, but he and the Dockers will want to kill the contest early. The Tigers will be plucky, but Freo is the safer bet.

Prediction: Fremantle by 45 points.

Think we could be in for a belting today
If we allow Serong and Brayshaw in the middle to do their own thing at stoppages/clearances it will be.

Wishful thinking but I'm hoping the smaller/narrower ground will help us a little bit defensive wise as we don't have a midfield that can spread. Freo's leg speed will cause us probs.

Quarter time

Richmond  4.2-26
Fremantle  4.4-28

Goals: Rioli 2, McIntosh, Sonsie.

First 10 mins was very good but Freo got on top in the last 10. Our lack of connection exiting D50 and entering F50 is hurting us. We're just giving the ball back to Freo far too easily. Our lack of leg-speed in the midfield is the issue as we already know. The difference in tackling is also standing out as the Dockers are a more mature side.

Half time

Richmond  4.2    6.3-39
Fremantle  4.4    7.7-49

Goals: Rioli 2, Lynch, McIntosh, Sonsie, Green.

A repeat of the first qtr. First 10 mins was very good, but we again fall away after that and Freo are on top for the last 10. They should be further in front given the number of inside 50s we are giving them. Whether it's fatigue or inexperience, we lose our shape and connection, make basic errors and are just predictably going wide and down the line. We're playing into Freo's hands. They just haven't made up pay yet on the scoreboard.

I've always said it should always be about the best person  for the job. Not quotas

She isn't the best, not even  close

I suppose it could be worse,  we could have her teamed with Dwayne Russell. Then we'd have the 2 worst going around

Good coaching leaving Miller on Treacy.
Should have been moved after 10mins.
Should move Blight onto Treacy and get Bauer subbed on up forward.

Good coaching leaving Miller on Treacy.
Should have been moved after 10mins.
Should move Blight onto Treacy and get Bauer subbed on up forward.

Reckon the only reason they haven't done that is because of the 2nd ruck conundrum

Can't play Blight as a key back and then expect him to 2nd ruck.

I'd be using Blight back and make Miller 2nd ruck off the bench. Can't do much damage from the bench

Blight miller sonsie banks trezise just very average players.

Blight's playing his what 7th or 8th game, so reckon he can be cut some slack

The others you listed, agree

Sonsie, who I've defended a fair bit has lost me today. Far too often he stands back when he needs to make a contest

3/4 time

Richmond    4.2    6.3     7.3-45
Fremantle    4.4    7.7   13.8-86

Goals: Rioli 2, Lynch, McIntosh, Sonsie, Green, Blight.

Outplayed and outclassed that quarter. Nothing positive to write about. Can we at least dig in in the last qtr like last week against Brisbane or we will fall away and lose by 12 goals like against the Saints?

Final Score

Richmond    4.2    6.3     7.3      7.5-47
Fremantle    4.4    7.7   13.8   16.12-108

Goals: Rioli 2, Lynch, McIntosh, Sonsie, Green, Blight.

Some good signs early but we were out on our feet by midway through the second quarter. Just one goal in last 2.5 quarters is disappointing even for a young team. Aside from a few Tigers, it was mostly bruise free footy as our "tackling" was well below par. Similar to the Saints game where we fell away badly in the second half and the opposition pretty much did what they wanted.

Honourable loss today. Nothing to be super proud about but not worthy of being overly critical. I really rate Freo, and think they should be top 6 this year even after a slow start.

Each week goes we learn more about some of the kids, and less senior types.

Hugo was OK, looking forward to a big chunk of games to see him develop to next level.
Jonty is raw and should have nailed that, would be impressive to say our 2 KP draftee 18yos have kicked a goal already by round 6, in a bottom 2 side.
Dow is a whipping boy and still young, but 79m gained with 15 handballs, 11 contested. I guess the bar is low, but I'm unsure thats a role we want to develop, but anyway.
Continue to love Trainors games, going to be a gem. Plays all year.
Hopper, Tim and KMac (I'll harshly call the list clogger crew, as I don't think any of the 3 will be part of our next flag), were OK, can't bag their games. KMac tagged Serong for most of it who influenced only slightly.
Maurice was lively early, he doesn't have the tank for midfield but I'd be intrigued to see how he would go as tagger. His pressure is elite and is opportunistic in F50. Everything else doesn't seem overly AFL standard so I wonder how he'd go tagging some of the smaller mids or even running half backs.
Sonsie and Brown were OK too, so reasonably honourable loss without being super honourable like the loss vs Lions.

A big win for the Dockers, who dominated territory (inside 50 entries 65-36) through winning clearances (44-33) and generating forward half intercepts (27-11). The better ball movement of Fremantle resulted in a major advantage in points scored from turnovers (70-20).

Fremantle generated 20 of the last 23 scores in this game and kicked 12 of the last 13 goals in a dominant performance after a bright start from Richmond.

AFL Report Card - Round 5

Will Faulkner, Catherine Healey, Ben Cotton and Ben Waterworth
Foxsports
14 April 2025

RICHMOND

A similar story for the Tigers for the third straight week: Competitive in the first half – and somewhat within striking distance on the scoreboard – then blown away emphatically in the second half. It reeks of a young, rebuilding team developing maturity, both physically and emotionally. After trailing by just 10 points at half-time, Richmond managed one goal in the second half and conceded six unanswered majors in the third term on its way to a 61-point loss.

In the votes

Skipper Toby Nankervis was the best ruck on the ground with 17 touches and five clearances, while Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper worked hard at the coalface. And there were promising signs from the Tigers’ two young defenders, with Luke Trainor and Tom Brown impressing with 22 and 24 touches respectively.

Room for improvement

Coach Adem Yze said the Tigers needed to work on their “mental mastery” after the stark second-half drop-off. On Sunday against Fremantle, it was the fourth straight match that saw Richmond concede six third-quarter goals, so something needs to change for Yze’s side coming out of the half-time break. Meanwhile, Jack Ross had just 12 disposals, while Tom Lynch kicked just one goal from five touches.
