Title: 8-point game against Port
Post by: mightytiges on July 04, 2006, 03:44:58 AM
A season defining game against Port. If we win we go 2 games clear of Port and stay in the top 8; if we lose they replace us.

Also another hoodoo to be broken this week as we've never beaten Port at Footy Park. We should have done it last year but faded in the last quarter. No Chad Cornes which is a big loss to them but they'll get back Tredrea. Both clubs have good up and coming youngsters.

They seem to have a habit of jumping us in the first quarter with their quick runners (a la Hawthorn) so we need to come out physically like we did against the Pies and hunt in packs right from the start. Our interstate form under Wallace has been very competitive so there's no reason why we can't break the hoodoo.

Who comes in for Newman is the big question? - Roachy?

i dont think jackson or roach deserve newmans spot. watched coburb last weekend v werribee and thought moore and JON were our best players with limbach. i think JON should be called up to run off half back or play wing.

Good thing though is that Chad Cornes won't be playing.

Good thinking X. JON was IMO one of only a few Burgers who played well in the last quarter. Werribee were running all over Coburg and JON saved 2-3 goals with his defensive efforts. As for Moore or Roach for that matter if either of the were brought in you'd think they'd be on their last chance and playing for their spot on the list.

I don't think Jackson's an option because he hasn't played for 3 weeks because of hammie.

I reckon they'll bring Ray Hall back - Tredrea is due back for the Power so we will need a bit more height down back.

I am not sure about Tommy Roach - still seems to panic a lot under pressure.

I wonder if we'll consider bringing Chaffey back for experience and to free up Suga?

Tigers forward Matthew Richardson, who last week had screws removed from the wrist he fractured in round nine, could return against Port Adelaide on Saturday. "We'll give him every opportunity," Wallace said. "It's a pain situation and whether he can deal with the pain."

If they brought Chaffey in, Gas will be happy becasue everyone will have a new whipping boy.
Thought he was pretty ordinary on the weekend playing for Coburg.

Chaffs' body is gone. Just too slow now. If we're out of contention by round 22 then I'd reckon he and Staff would be brought in to give them both a farewell game.

RICHMOND star Matthew Richardson says he feels ready to return against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night after an encouraging workout at training yesterday.

The Tigers spearhead, who has not played since round nine after fracturing his right wrist, completed the full session with his team-mates at Punt Rd.
Richardson tested the wrist, from which he had pins removed last Wednesday, in match practice and did not appear impeded by the injury.

Wearing gloves on both hands he did not hold back, taking a heavy knock on the wrist when he took an impressive mark over Patrick Bowden and Andrew Kellaway. The mark prompted coach Terry Wallace to shout from the field: "It might have hurt but it looked good."

Richardson said he wanted to return against Port, provided he made it though a final training session on Friday.

Teammate Matthew Richardson, who missed the Collingwood game after having screws removed from the wrist he fractured in round nine, is likely to return for the Port Adelaide game on Saturday night, but in a reduced capacity.

The full-forward hurt his wrist when he knocked it during training yesterday and realises that he will have to play with pain and discomfort to get through the rest of the year.

"It took the full force of the ball landing — it's going to be like that for the rest of the year," he told Channel Seven. "If I land on it or the ball smashes into it at full pelt, it's going to sting for a minute or so. But (there's) no lasting damage, you've just got to put up with these things."

Round 14 previews
06 July 2006
Herald-Sun

PORT ADELAIDE v RICHMOND at AAMI Stadium 7.40pm

Head to head: Port Adelaide 9 Richmond 3

Last time: Port Adelaide 14.12 (96) bt Richmond 12.11 (83) R17 2005 AAMI Stadium.

TAB Sportsbet: Port Adelaide $1.42 Richmond $2.70
Centrebet: Port Adelaide $1.50 Richmond $2.60

Drizzle is forecast in Adelaide during the day on Saturday, but Tigers coach Terry Wallace might unleash a rain dance before the game if it means his side will provide a repeat of last week's heroics. The Tigers were awesome in the wet over Collingwood last Sunday, and Shane Tuck, Nathan Brown and Troy Simmonds proved that conditions can often just make class stand out rather than stifle it. Port's loss to Melbourne is no hanging offence, but with Chad Cornes (ribs) out and a lack of firepower in the forward line, the Power will be focused on hanging on in a war of attrition. The Power's Shaun Burgoyne looms as his side's only four-quarter midfielder at the moment, although his brother Peter will be better for the run last week.

Key: Richmond has made a habit of bouncing back well after big losses in 2006, but has not been the same force when a lot has been expected. Wallace will implore his men it's time that changed.

Tip: Richmond by 16 points.

Time right to step up
By RICHARD EARLE

TONIGHT'S meeting of aspirational Port Adelaide and Richmond at AAMI Stadium is more than an eight-point play, it's a fast forward ride to credibility.

The Tigers' 0-3 start to the year and Port's 2-6 record after eight games left little hint of the youth-inspired resurgence to follow.

Eighth-placed Richmond (7-6) will jettison Port (6-7) and consolidate its place in the eight with a win. Four crucial points would stoke a finals firestorm for ninth-ranked Port.

Usually, Port skipper Warren Tredrea and Richmond full forward Matthew Richardson dominate pre-game hype and supporter hope. Tredrea has been named to return after injuring his left knee against West Coast while veteran Richardson has been curiously named as an emergency after four weeks out with a broken wrist.

However, an even spread of players has emerged on both sides that will lock-horns and influence the outcome. Joel and Patrick Bowden and Andrew Raines have revived the Tigers rebounding backline. Half-forward Kayne Pettifer has matured, booting 23 goals and 196cm ruckman/forward Troy Simmonds has finally bloomed with 278 hit-outs and 16 goals this season.

Mercurial Nathan Brown provides the X-factor for the Tigers that Shaun Burgoyne and Danyle Pearce have supplied at Port over the past month. Richmond skipper Kane Johnson won't be far away from Port's newest on-ball jewel Burgoyne.

After quelling Daniel Kerr and Aaron Davey in successive weeks, Port's Jacob Surjan can expect a match-up with fellow young gun Brett Deledio.

Joel Bowden, who will attempt to cramp Tredrea's style, believes tonight's encounter will prove a definitive developmental exchange. "You are not going to get into the finals without beating good teams," he said. "We have to win games the experts tip us not to win and one of those games is this weekend against Port Adelaide."

Bowden said Richardson was anxious to front the Power - but the decision won't be left up to the dual All-Australian today.

"He is certainly keen to play. It's an issue of whether he feels he will get through and whether the medical staff will clear him," Bowden said.

"He is our most dynamic forward and we certainly want him up for the rest of the season. It's something they have to weigh up."

Richmond has scalped Collingwood and Adelaide this year. Port coach Williams duly understands the Tigers are now steeled to register their first win against the Power at AAMI Stadium.

"I was really impressed by the way they play. They are in very good form and will come here with a lot of confidence," Williams said.

Forward Damon White slots in for injured Chad Cornes and, together with Tredrea, should straighten Port's static forward entry exhibited in defeat to Melbourne last week.

Hit-outs to advantage provided by the Brendon Lade and Dean Brogan ruck tandem against gallant Simmonds should just give Port the edge.

Title: Williams wants to target Joel (The Age)
Post by: one-eyed on July 08, 2006, 01:48:25 AM
From The Age

Williams .... aims to turn a Richmond strength into a weakness in tonight's encounter at AAMI Stadium.

He hopes to counter Richmond's dynamic defender Joel Bowden by making him more accountable for an opponent.

The eighth-placed Tigers enter the match a win ahead of ninth-placed Port, with Bowden a key to Richmond's fortunes.

Bowden has been in stellar form in defence for the Tigers, with only 10 players — all midfielders — accumulating more possessions than his 308 so far this season.

While some opposition coaches have tried to tag Bowden, Williams wants to take another option.

"Joel Bowden has been playing exceptionally and it's pretty hard to tag people in their back line," Williams said.

"We would hope to be able to use his player and get them to kick a lot of goals."

The comments suggest Port could pit goalsneaks such as Josh Mahoney, Daniel Motlop or even the elusive Peter Burgoyne against the in-form Tiger.

Port will be without roaming utility Chad Cornes (punctured lung) and onballer Domenic Cassisi (knee) but has named captain Warren Tredrea.

Tredrea missed Port's last match with a knee ailment initially thought to sideline the Power skipper for about four matches.

Williams said Tredrea had done enough to prove his fitness, but doubts linger — as they do with Tiger Matthew Richardson.

Richardson has been named an emergency despite the veteran forward declaring he had overcome a fractured wrist.

Richmond has not beaten Port in Adelaide.

I would not be surprised if this was our crunch ball game of the season.
