Title: Victorian Bushfires
Post by: Moi on December 07, 2006, 07:54:35 PM
Hate this time of year, with my tree-hugging daughter living surrounded by bush in the Dandenongs.
Can't believe how dry everything is and what's happening in the north of the state.
All those animals up there  :'(
With nearly empty dams, doesn't help either.
I know what I'd do with anyone caught lighting any this summer  :banghead

Good luck to our great firefighters  :thumbsup

The CFA and DES people are as brave as anything fighting fires virtually one on one. Bloody dangerous up there with it so dry and the weather warming up in the next few days. Hate to think what could happen if the wind picks up and fans the flames. The situation is serious enough as it is.

Ch 2 said the fires are so severe they are even threatening water catchment areas for Melbourne's water supply  :-\.

I remember the sun being red in the sky on the day of the Ash Wednesday fires and then travelling not long afterwards through Macedon with everything black and not a living thing in sight. Just hits home how large these bushfires can get.

Couldn't agree more Moi - they do a sensational job!

I think it's going to be a very scary weekend - I know everyone is preparing for the worse (allthe fires joining up and becoming one big fire) but I reckon it's to bloody hard to predict what "mother nature" has in store.

Do you still have the firebugs hanging around Sherbrook Forest?  I remember going there for a school excursion and there was a weird guy hanging around - suspected firebug.

Maybe he got lost on his way to banjo lessons.
Heaps of residents in the hills could qualify as firebugs. They burn everything they can.  ??? Raking up piles of leaves and setting them on fire out the front seems to be the norm. Good thing they move there for the fresh air.

Very smokey and hazy up my way today (Upper Yarra Valley - speaking of banjoes). Not due to pyromaniacs burning leaves in the gutter today though.   :(

I got the biggest fright when I stepped outside my front door  yesterday morning for the first time in a week, and saw the smoke haze.  Ive been staying with my mother-in-law in Mitcham for a week after my father-in-law passed away and we havent been allowed to turn the tv or the radio on so I had no idea the state was burning. Its feels like ive been off planet for a week! I know a lot of country towns are threatened including Bright, I hate to think of that beautiful place being burnt, has it reached it yet, does anyone know?

According to this map, Bright looks okay, 2JD
But it's the change in conditions they're expecting in the next couple of days that has probably everyone not knowing where it's going to go.
Here's a map of the hot spots :-(

This is from the Herald-Sun 2JD:

Quote
In the biggest blaze, the North East Alpine Fire, in the Ovens Valley southwest of Bright, more than 72,000ha of forest has been destroyed.

Firefighters were working fast to try to keep the blaze from moving into the Mt Buffalo national park.

Embers threatened homes in Tolmie, Jamieson, Kevington and Knockwood.

The full article about all the fires is here:  http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,20897615-661,00.html

ps. Condolences to you and your family 2JD.

Bright is a beautiful place.  My dad lived there for a time when he was a kid as his father was the State Bank Manager at Bright.

Sorry 2JD, I thought a DSE map would be accurate.
Beautiful area up there and such a densely treed and beautiful area, Bright, Porpunkah  :'(

Waking up this morning and Melbourne is blanketed with smoke.  If there is a bright part of the morning, it doesn't seem windy.  Hope the firefighters can get a bit of control before wind changes

I've got family up in north-eastern Vic (Albury, Wangaratta, Glenrowan) and they say the smoke there is absolutely shocking. They said they are not venturing outside very much because of the smoke.

Thankfully yesterday it didn't all go crazy - the weather in particular the winds were not as bad as what they were predicting but today  ??? Well that's another story - fingers crossed
Title: Re: Victorian Bushfires
Post by: Moi on December 10, 2006, 11:08:11 AM
I thought the wind had slightly freshened only a couple of minutes ago.  Not a great deal  :pray but it's not as eerily still as it has been early this morning and yesterday.  Let's hope it doesn't turn nasty.  Good luck to our brave fieries.
I lost a workmate in the Linton fires - Jason Thomas - it's a tough business they're in and I just can't fathom what courage it takes to be on the frontline of these fires.
Must be a terrible dilemma for homeowners - do you stay and fight or do you pack up and go.  How many times do we see those who've stayed and won - and those who go and lose everything.  Me, I reckon you can always rebuild and your family's safety is paramount.  But I guess if you're well equipped, know what you're doing, don't get in the way of the fieries and create a hindrance, go for it I suppose.

A real dilemma

Some news on the fires near Bright.

And some scum have deliberately lit fires today too >:(.

Fires threaten across state
Jane Holroyd
Breaking News - The Age
December 10, 2006 - 3:20PM

Strong winds and soaring temperatures are fuelling more than 10 monster fires in Gippsland and in Victoria's north-east, where more than 200,000 hectares of bushland have already been burnt.

Residents of towns south-east of Bright have been put on alert as strong north-west winds fan a fire eight kilometres east of Bright. Germantown, Freeburgh and Snowy Creek residents have been told to enact their bushfire survival plans.

And a blaze near Camperdown, in the state's south-west, has burnt one house and is threatening others. About 160 firefighters are on the scene near Moores Road at Stonyford, supported by 35 tankers, 37 tankers, bulldozers and two fire-bombing aircraft. A nearby fire at Hawk Nest Road was contained late this morning.

The Gippsland towns of Licola, Dargo, Woods Point, Valencia Creek, Briagolong and Bushy Park are at risk as northerly winds begin to strengthen and push the fire front in their direction.

In the north-east, Mount Buller, the King and Buckland valleys and the towns of Tolmie and Jamieson are also under threat.

Embers from a large fire south-east of Mount Terrible carried across a river and ignited spot fires north of Kevington this morning.

Closer to Melbourne, 80 firefighters and 20 trucks were called to battle deliberately-lit grass fires near the Western Ring Road at Glenroy just after midnight.

Authorities were alerted to seven fires in the area over 2.5 kilometres which threatened to form a single huge blaze and put houses at risk.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade operations commander Wayne Carlson said the fires reached the fences of local homes, distressing residents.

"The thing of most concern is that someone would light these sorts of fires on these sorts of days," Commander Carlson said.

"Members of the public should certainly be vigilant if they see anything like this."

The fires have destroyed a bit of Aussie movie history:

Snowy River hut destroyed
By Melissa Jenkins and Danny Rosh
December 11, 2006 07:56pm
Herald-Sun

A BUSHFIRE has destroyed the iconic Craig's Hut in Victoria's high country, made famous by the film The Man From Snowy River.

And firefighters were forced to retreat as flames raced through tree tops in the state's northeast with residents near Bright put on high alert.

The smoke cloud over the city today looks like it's getting worse. I'm looking out of my office window in Carlton and can see bugger all of the city apart from a shadowy Melboure central.

There was some sort of fire near Vic Park as the Tiges were training. Had about 2-3 firetrucks turn up near the Yarra Falls end of the ground and fire alarms were going off while we were there.

Fires cause massive power cut
Matthew Schulz
Breaking news: Herald-Sun
January 16, 2007 04:31pm

MORE than 500,000 Victorian homes and businesses have been blacked out after bushfires in the north-east cut a vital power link.

Details are so far sketchy, but it is understood a main electricity supply line between Victoria and New South Wales was tripped by intense heat and smoke from the fires at 4.04pm this afternoon.

Bushfire damage to the line had slashed 2000 megawatts of the State's 9000 megawatt needs an SP Ausnet spokeswoman Louisa Graham said.

The power cuts affected homes and business throughout the state.

Alinta spokesman Shannon Walker estimated 150,000 of its customers were without power from the southern suburbs in the Mornington Peninsula to the western suburbs of Sunbury were without power.

"And we're just one of five electricity companies in Victoria," Mr Walker said.

Powercor and CityPower's media manager Damien Batey said 257,000 customers of the two companies had lost power.

Affected towns included Mildura and surrounding towns, half of Geelong, and large parts of Bendigo and Ballarat.
