Fires cause massive power cutMatthew SchulzBreaking news: Herald-SunJanuary 16, 2007 04:31pm MORE than 500,000 Victorian homes and businesses have been blacked out after bushfires in the north-east cut a vital power link.Details are so far sketchy, but it is understood a main electricity supply line between Victoria and New South Wales was tripped by intense heat and smoke from the fires at 4.04pm this afternoon. Bushfire damage to the line had slashed 2000 megawatts of the State's 9000 megawatt needs an SP Ausnet spokeswoman Louisa Graham said.The power cuts affected homes and business throughout the state.Alinta spokesman Shannon Walker estimated 150,000 of its customers were without power from the southern suburbs in the Mornington Peninsula to the western suburbs of Sunbury were without power. "And we're just one of five electricity companies in Victoria," Mr Walker said. Powercor and CityPower's media manager Damien Batey said 257,000 customers of the two companies had lost power.Affected towns included Mildura and surrounding towns, half of Geelong, and large parts of Bendigo and Ballarat.
