Just announced in the last hour on SEN that Simon Goodwin is one of the 4 players being investigated for betting on AFL games. Goodwin and the Crows have confirmed it. He didn't bet on any Adelaide games and only did it once apparently. The dopey git opened a betting account under his real name :stupid.
I think we are in the clear. Terry was asked on 3aw earlier if he knew of any betting investigation at Richmond and he didn't.

Can tell you that at all clubs. there will be players who on bet on footy.

Latest from SEN is Melbourne has come out and said Daniel Ward is one of them.
Rumour has it that another Crows player might be involved.
-
A Carlton and Richmond player you ""might"" find are involved.
Lets see the spin doctors at Tigerland put a positive spin on this one ;)
-
Well either us or the Blues is safe Jack as Swan Keiren Jack has been the 3rd player named. One to go.

I couldn't care less if they had a bet on other games or bet to win our own games. What's the big deal?
If they bet to lose that's different, but who cares otherwise!

Totally agree, but we didnt make the rules.

I've never heard of Keiren Jack :-\
This is from the link that MT posted:
If found guilty of breaking the AFL's regulations concerning gambling, Goodwin, Ward and Jack face penalties which could include a monetary sanction, suspension or the requirement that the offender must attend counselling or a responsible gambling course.
-
Penalty of 30 days without entry to a TAB :lol
-
Furthermore, whats stopping any player walking into a TAB and betting with cash ?
Half the tab people wouldnt know who they were anyway :o
-
The Tigers are in the clear. David Hale of the Roos is the fourth and final player named.

I don't think you could miss Richo lol.
What's stopping a player's brother or mate doing it for him? They only caught these 4 because the betting agencies did an audit on their account holders after noticing AFL players were on the books.
Hale is only guilty of being stupid. He obviously wasn't cheating betting on the finals after the Roos season had finished up. Still the AFL might cramp down on these 4 to set an example to deter any real corruption through gambling on matches. Ward is the more serious case and needs professional help.

`Stay tuned, this is only the tip of the ""iceberg""

Why doesn't the AFL just mind its own business ::)
You can't take drugs, you can't bet - next they'll be outlawing all horizontal pursuits lol
Seriously, if they're not betting against themselves, who cares!

Isn't the grey area that when you bet on your own team winning you have to specify a points margin - 39 points under or over? The captain at the 3/4 time huddle - "Hey lads, 10 goals up is great and all but tone it down will you. I've got a grand on us under 39 points" ;D
ps. The luge is a far too risky pursuit for a footballer Moi ;)

Yes, but imagine if you were in on it, you could do very nicely :lol
Stuff the AFL hahaha!

Wallace urges measured punishment
The Age - Breaking News
February 18, 2007 - 7:29PM
Richmond coach Terry Wallace has called on the AFL to hand out measured punishments if, as expected, four players are found guilty of gambling offences.
The league is investigating Adelaide midfielder Simon Goodwin, Melbourne defender Daniel Ward, Kangaroos ruckman David Hale and Sydney rookie Kieren Jack for breaches of its gambling rules.
The players allegedly bet on AFL games or events and the league has extremely harsh penalties at its disposal for this - fines of up to $100,000 and indefinite bans from even attending matches as well as playing.
The AFL has already indicated that none of the four committed the most serious breach of betting against their own teams.
But it is understood Ward last year twice bet on the Demons winning.
"I'd be devastated if players had been gambling on their own games - in particular, against their own teams," Wallace said.
"I'm just hoping they don't go too hard on this group of guys and make (them) too much a group of scapegoats.
"It's very, abundantly, clear now where the AFL is heading with it all - the message is going to be loud and clear.
"Obviously they're going to receive some sort of penalty, but I'd be disappointed if it was too harsh on this group of guys - if anyone transgresses from this point, you know where it stands."
The AFL announced an investigation two days ago and it expects the findings within the fortnight.
Wallace said his impression was that gambling on the AFL was not a widespread problem among its players.
But he acknowledged the spectre of players "throwing" games or being involved in other sorts of betting scandals meant the league had to make a point.
"I don't think, from what I've heard - and you only know what you hear - that it's been this thing that's absolutely rife and a massive problem," he said.
"The AFL has every right to nip it in the bud."

All bets off as AFL broadens its inquiry
Greg Denham
The Australian
February 19, 2007
THE AFL is widening its investigation after discovering that four players last year had breached its gambling laws.
Betfair and Tabcorp betting agencies share information with the AFL, but general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said the probe has widened to include other sports-betting bookmakers.
He said on the weekend that players who bet in cash or wagered with the dozens of betting agencies other than Tabcorp and Betfair, would also be monitored.
"We have other means of obtaining information and we can do that," Anderson said. "Ideally we would like to get information from every betting agency and we are seeking information from other betting agencies."

Does anyone find it pretty ironic/ordinary that these players had their names spashed all over the papers for, what, $10 bets or something, and yet the drug cheats had their names suppressed?
Something wrong here!

Yeah it doesn't make sense although the drug takers had their names posted on the net. I'd take a guess and say there's already rules in place for handling drug takers but not for gamblers.
That $10 bet was apparently on the Tiges-Crows game. Kieren Jack would have collected nicely if he tipped the Tiges that day.

Neil Craig might have to start to look for a new team :whistle

More Crows to be investigated
Posted Feb 19, 2007 - 11:31 AM
A syndicate wager made by Simon Goodwin last year could drag other Adelaide players into the betting probe launched by the AFL.
AFL investigators this week will ask Goodwin if a bet involving thousands of dollars was for a group of current and former Crows players.
If the league can substantiate this suspicion it will put several Crows at risk of suspension.
It is understood that Goodwin’s Betfair account shows bets made on less than half-a-dozen AFL games – none involving Adelaide – but the league is curious about the size of one wager of thousands of dollars.

Just on SEN - Our Joel has called the four caught gambling on footy "silly".
-
Just announced on SEN by AA
No evidence of any of the 4 players betting against their team. Each player a first time offender. Both Goodwin and Ward found to have gambling problems and are receiving counselling from their respective own club.
Any player found gambling on footy in the future will face suspension.
Goodwin had 4 bets worth a total of $16,000. Required to have compulsory indefinite counselling + $40,000 fine with $20,000 suspended if he fails to attend counselling or bets again.
Ward had 3 bets worth $5,000 including twice on his own club. Compulsory indefinite conselling + $10,000, $5,000 suspended. Also 100 hours community work with Berry St.
Jack had 2 bets worth a total of $10 - seek counselling and if need be future conselling if recommended + a reprimand
Hale had 4 bets worth $100 - seek counselling and if need be future conselling if recommended + $5,000 suspended
-
Goodwin, not scared to have a decent bet.
Too have that sort of money on game, you would think he would be getting some""good mail"" sorry sauce ;)
-
If they pro-rata'd a fine for Jack it would have been $20 with $10 suspended. 8)

Seems Goodwin's sauce was past its used by date :whistle.
SIMON Goodwin did not win any money from his contract-breaching football bets to offset his $40,000 fine from the AFL.
Despite the Adelaide club champion reportedly collecting as much as $3900 with his successful $5090 bet on West Coast to beat Sydney in last year's AFL grand final, the AFL says Goodwin "significantly lost" with his other three bets.
