I just got home from watching the first half and what a terrible display of football is was.

Both teams looked pretty ordinary, we were just worse!!!

We got plenty of the ball but continually turned it over.

My best from the first half were Lids, Petts, Polak should some good glimpses as did Sarge.

Petts kicked a couple of long goals, hopefully he has found his kicking boot again :pray

I liked the look of Polak though, he hasnt played a lot of senior footy over the last year or so and will take him a little more time to get back to his peak. I think he has something to offer.

MT, didnt have too much to write in the first qtr :lol

And finally for X, Tiva was in good touch and was hitting his targets more than not.

Torch, I already posted the best players, no-one ended up seriously injuried, looks like Polak just got winded, Petts got crunched, but I think he is fine and Sarge is ok.

MT said our turnovers are what killed us... they are our own worst enemy  :scream

I must have been at another game, I could have sworn Meyer kicked two in quick succession in the second. For what it's worth, I had them as:

Pettifer 2, Meyer 2, Polak 2, Schulz 2, Tuck 1, Hartigan 1.

Back from the match:

Best was Pettifer by a mile. He was the only one who played well each qtr.

I agree with MT that turnovers were the killer for us, as well as bad kicking for goal.

Injuries: Moore got injured in the 1st qtr and did not return to the field. It was a leg injury, either a knee strain or a corkie, in my considered medical opinion. It wasn't easy to tell.

Schulz showed a fair bit, but missed some chances. Polak impressed me at times. Raines was good in the 2nd half. Joel was pretty good, and Tiva far from the worst. Johnson okay as well.

Gaspar made at least 3 shocking mistakes, and was generally below par for a lot of the game, but then backed it up with a good last qtr.

Graham tried, but is a long, long, long way off senior AFL standard. Anyone expecting him to play effectively in the seniors this year is fooling themselves.Look for him in 2008, perhaps. Patto didn't play because of a corkie.

And Fwoy, Meyer did have a 5 minute cameo, kicking 2 goals.

Polak was very "clean" in his ball handling, moved better than I expected, and looked comfortable on the forward line. He also got up fairly high in a couple of pack situations.I'm warming to this guy, and think he's going to very handy this year, both forward and back.
He just doesn't seem to fumble, and he's a one-grab mark.

Ruck work was done by Knobel and Graham.

That's good to hear, hopefully if we need him, he'll be a good option up forward.

Was Knobel and Graham alright or are we missing Simmo badly?

I thought it was a pretty uninspiring game. Only a practice match though.
Our decision making killed us, constantly trying the handballing one-two but often to a player who was surrounded and who had no chance of giving it back. Had an off day with goalkicking.
Like watching the U9's in the third quarter with 32 players swarming through the middle and no players at either end.
Positives - Pettifer worked really hard, Polak could be anything (& crashes packs :thumbsup), Schulz up forward, Tuck inconspicuous in amassing possessions. I thought Hyde was direct and our best link player in the short time he was on.
Melbourne were not a 27 point better side. Well, they were on the dodgy scoreboard but not in general play.

Amusing - Melbourne seem to have adopted Spud's 2004 gameplan. Ring-a-rosie, backwards, sideways, keepings off. Terrible to watch. They got away with it with fairly good skills but I doubt they'll get anywhere if they persist with it.

From what I have seen and read so far looks like another frustrating year COULD be looming.

Next week whoever is fit and in our best 22 should all be playing.
Carlton round 1 believe it or not is a HUGE game for us ...........

Rhett

One of my mates works at Coburg and he told me they had a Richmond reserves team made up of 15 senior list players and another 7 Coburg players against Coburg's best team.

Patrick Bowden kicked 7 goals apparently, which is a great return.

I forgot to mention that McGuane played  better than I expected - up til now I've been unconvinced about his long-term tenure at the club.I'm still not sure, but I now have a little more room for optimism.

Fish was spot on about the handballs to players under pressure.

Brown was quiet, but he'll strut his stuff when it matters. It's easy to criticise the senior players in prac matches, but let's face it, they're not the real thing and the experienced players know it.

Foley got the ball a fair bit, but was off his usual game - eg poor decision-making at times.

Thursfield didn't play.My focus today was going to be on closely watching Moore and Thursfield, and I got short-changed, with Moore only playing 20 mins before injury.

Generally, we had a poor 1st qtr, then matched the Demons from then on. At times we looked good, at times we didn't. I believe it is foolhardy and premature to write off our prospects for 2007 based on the last 3 weeks, as I've been hearing people do.
Title: Re: RICHMOND V MELBOURNE: post any reports here
Post by: mightytiges on March 11, 2007, 01:12:11 AM
First of all a big thanks to Steph for posting the scores and updates during the game  :cheers.

GB is correct to say it's foolhardy to write our season off based on 3 practice games and with so much experimentation by both coaches but it's still frustrating to watch us lose a game rather the opposition win it.

A scrappy game is being kind. The skills especially by us were shocking even for a presason game. The Dees weren't great but as Bully said we were far far worse. Plough's "we might as well spent summer at the pub" line comes to mind.

Many of our guys just don't have an instinctive understanding of the way modern footy is played and when they do make the right decision they then miss the target by not being able to kick to a leading teammate's advantage side. You get away with this in non-physical training drills but not in games. I would like to know our kick to handball ratio from today. It felt like it was 5 handballs to every kick.  Even some of the younger Richmond boys sitting around us who played in the curtain raiser were frustrated by what we were doing out there.  Plenty of fine-tuning still needed especially entering our forward line :P.

Most of our blokes are reactive to nearly every situation and can't think 2-3 steps ahead in their mind to gain us the footy in clear space on the rebound. The obvious one is when we switch the play and no one has quickly ran to the fat side wing to out-stuff the opposition and get the ball into an open forward line. Then there's the stuff you tell a U12 not to do like knock the footy back into the corridor in the backline because it gifts goals to the opposition (hello Gas and Tivs ::) )

Us missing a number of players and the Dees being at virtually full-strength wasn't the reason we lost today. We had more than enough of the footy and opportunities to win today. Melbourne won because all they had to do was crowd us enough into overpossessing and then nail us on the turnover. 80% of their goals were directly from our turnovers.

Player summary

Newy - a solid to average game where he tried to get some run going.

Gas - Tried hard but another ordinary game from him in this preseason.

Lids - played BP on Brad Miller and had a mixed game. I know preseason is for experimentation but Lids needs to learn his craft in the guts not in a BP.

Rainesy - see Newy

Polak - played forward and once again showed why Greg Miller chased after him. Our forwards did well today in the circumstances. It was the delivery to them that was dumb.

Browny - a day to forget.

Joel - Did okay on Neitz. The question that needs to be asked is we've been told all summer we got Polak to free Joel up from having to mind a key forward and then Joel ends up lining on Neitz at FB ???

Knobel - Apart from centre bounces is not up to it and a liability. He had a chance to take a uncontested mark 25m out from goal but the kick was just a fraction to his side at head height and he just showed no agility to adjust.

Polo - Can't say I noticed him.

Pettifer - Excellent. Worked his backside off, lead well and to the right spots and kicked 3 goals.

Sugar - a fairly good game from Sugar and improved as the game went along. At least he could hit a target most of the time unlike his teammates.

Tuck - Got plenty of the ball but as the article on the AFL says was obsessed with handballing so we as a team didn't gain from it.

Meyer - We were sitting in the Heatley stand at the opposite end of the ground so we didn't know for sure who kicked those 2 goals that he kicked. Didn't do much else and even a teammate in the grandstand gave a "c'mon Danny" gasp when he expected him to go harder at the ball at one stage in a forward pocket.

Jacko - Didn't notice him but he apparently played the first half of the ressies game.

Schulz - Like Polak very good in the circumstances. Kicked 3.3. What was most pleasing today was his defensive workrate in the forward which a few of his teammate could learn from and his ability to crash some packs. I remember one play where he was outnumbered in a marking contest yet he was able to get the ball to the ground and then dived to beat to Melbourne defenders to the ball.

Krak - A fairly typical Krak game. I had him kick 3 behinds which could have turned a ordinary game into a influential one if he had kicked straight.

Hyde - see Newy and Rainesy.

Tivs - typical Tivs game. The good mixed with the ugly.

Hartigan - Didn't do much today apart from a late goal.

Hughes - Didn't get much gametime today.

McGuane - Not convinced yet.

Moore - See GB's post ... Injured early

Foley - Did okay in the centre but I wouldn't have him in our bests as the AFL site does. Agree with GB's summation.

Howat - Improved as the game went along and worked tirelessly getting the pill. In our bests but still made a couple of dumb mistakes. If only he had a right foot too.

Graham - At times Jeff White clearly outjudged the flight of the ball at centre bounces and Gus would  mistime his jump and swipe at empty air.

King - okay and not our worst out there. Worked hard defensively. One of our better players in a poor first half by the team as a whole.

It was disappointing!

turnover after turnover. I reckon Polak understood 5 minutes into the 1st qtr what Richo has had to put up with most of his career. Bootlace passes or straight over the head :-\ >:(. Having said I thought Polak was very good. His running was a standout. Whe he didn't have it because of the above mentioned turnovers he busted his guts to chase the Melbourne blokes down.

I think we've gone "happy handball" crazy  :banghead but as I posted on another thread we have very little choice when you look up the field and there's not a soul there  >:(.

Was also annoyed with how wide we wen, rather than trying to go directly down the middle. For me that was one thing that stood out - at least melb tried to get the ball back through the corridor.

Quote
Lids - played BP on Brad Miller and had a mixed game. I know preseason is for experimentation but Lids needs to learn his craft in the guts not in a BP.

I can understand the logic here because he really needs to work harder when he doens't have the ball and on the defensive side of his game but I do agree he could have done that in the mid-field yesterday

Quote
Rainesy - see Newy

Thought he was a bit flat yesterday

Quote
Pettifer - Excellent. Worked his backside off, lead well and to the right spots and kicked 3 goals.

Our best by a long way - his endurance is exceptional :thumbsup

Quote
Sugar - a fairly good game from Sugar and improved as the game went along. At least he could hit a target most of the time unlike his teammates.

Good leadership today - baked a few blokes about not manning up - but add in a few other choice descriptive words and you'll get the drift  ;) ;D

I saw the entire Coburg/Richmond 2nd team game and i just think he needs to show some more intensity. He seems very laconic at times. Got all the skill in the world but attack son attack

Quote
Jacko -Didn't notice him but he apparently played the first half of the ressies game.

Yes he did and was not great - had a set shot from about 45m out and didn't make the distance (actually he is not alone - we seem to have very little depth in our kicking :banghead)

Quote
Schulz - Like Polak very good in the circumstances. Kicked 3.3. What was most pleasing today was his defensive workrate in the forward which a few of his teammate could learn from and his ability to crash some packs. I remember one play where he was outnumbered in a marking contest yet he was able to get the ball to the ground and then dived to beat to Melbourne defenders to the ball.

Exactly  :thumbsup :clapping :thumbsup

Danny Meyer ... i heard kick 2 goals ... but seems like he doesn't want to play for us ...

i like meyer but does terry like him ???

someone said he had 5 minute cameo and kicked 2 goals ?

i ask the question ... does terry believe in meyer ?

Daniel Jackson ... another one i like ... but not in the forward line ... he is a defender ...

BUT ...

isn't that always the case with richmond ... kicking, having 5 goals to nil start in the first quarter, not knowing how to pass the football to our forwards !

it seems like we just want to kick the football to our forwards and sit back and watch !

goals doesn't have to come from our forwards !

Danny Meyer will be a player, the kid is a half back at the moment who should be given 5 to 6 minute spells on a half forward stuff every quarter. If he plays half back and gets it 15 times and he can snag 1 to 2 goals playing 20 minutes a game on a hff then he'll be worth the effort.

I reckon Danny's all right as well and worth persisting more in the seniors.  Dunno why he hasn't had much of a chance so far.

Exactly.

One of the reasons why I couldn't careless about the scoreboard yesterday. Too many Tigers played in positions they shouldn't be most of the time. The only concern was the skill level and decision making.

Btw did Paddy Bowden kick 7 goals in the Ressies yesterday? I only saw the second half.

A half back stuff who kicks you 20 to 25 goals a year is worth his weight in gold. Meyer can play. As I said hes a half back at the moment and an impact type half forward.

Just catching up on earlier posts in this thread ....

I hope MT put enough credit on his phone to get the main match  :shh

Cheeky bugger  :lol

Rhett

One of my mates works at Coburg and he told me they had a Richmond reserves team made up of 15 senior list players and another 7 Coburg players against Coburg's best team.

According to Soy Sauce many of those playing in the Coburg side yesterday will be Coburg reserves players this year.

Patrick Bowden kicked 7 goals apparently, which is a great return.

He must have kicked 4 in the first half plus 3 after half time. Thanks Bully. Good stuff  :clapping.

Yeah if you have a look at the Coburg boys that played for the Richmond side (they were the whites btw) there was their Joint B&F Al Neville (how he is not on an AFL list is staggering to me), B&F Runner up Paul Shelton, some kid who was wearing number 37  - who's bloody impressive but who's name completely escapes me  ;D. These 3 for starters would be in the Coburg firsts. Bloody good effort from the Burger kids - actually enjoyed the game immensely. Got to see how run and carry is supposed work :rollin

Actually I don't think he is either - I don't really know what his position is to be honest and perhaps that's the problem :help :-\

And PS: sorry for a bad typo earlier in this thread when I typed Jackson was great (I've now changed it) because it should read Jackson was NOT great

I can't locate the estimated crowd for the Richmond vs Melbourne Challenge Cup match
Our match is the only match in the Herald Sun without an estimated crowd.

Anyone seen any attendance from last week ?

Rhett, I think one of the match reports said 1,000 - 1,200.

I reckon that sounds about right - perhaps 2,000 max - it wasn't a great crowd. Heat probably had something to do with it and the fact is was at Princes Park  :rollin

And finally for X, Tiva was in good touch and was hitting his targets more than not.

u must be misyaking tivs for another left footer, say howat.
cos every person i yhave spoken to who was at the game and many reports i have read say tiv was worst on the ground and once again the turn over specialist.
its been said that even when tiv was in a situation where it was 2 of us v 1 of them he still stuffed up

tiv is a waste of time and wont be seen after rnd 5

X- fact is Tiv started well - was hitting targets.

As the game went on he was like most of the team - turning it over. Beleive me he was not the only turnover specialist out there

Was he our worst? NO because at least he was getting the bloody thing. Was he our best? - NO

I saw things the same way, WP. Tiv worked hard, and he made a few errors, like a lot of others.

Yep dumb turnovers seemed to be the order of the day from everyone. Even Lids made one glaring one. Collected the ball in the back pocket and didn't bother looking across the goals to see if he could switch the play. Instead just lazily bombed it down the line to the wing where a Demon outmarked an out of position Tiger.

If you re-read the Essendon Mildura game thread from last year we were just as ordinary at this time of year in 2006. Wait for the first few rounds of the real stuff before we write ourselves off.

our bad disposal is a virus, all starts and ends with tiv, get rid of him, and we will eliminate the source of the virus
