if we're gunna trade for a ruckman, would prefer to go for someone who has been in the system for only 2-3 years.
-
thought he was older than 24, so at first thought no way.
but now, i think he is the exact kinda ruckman we need, as he is also an enforcer .
but i doubt he will come, he is a qld boy and has business there and as if he would kleave a place so close to julz! :lol
however , if julz can sweet talk him to leave home and come to us why not, maybe we can trade him for knobel :lol, isnt knobs a qld'er also
-
Isn't he a bit injury prone?
-
Isn't he a bit injury prone?
Yep. Just what we need - another injury-prone ruckman who can't get out on the park :help.
Knobel started with Brisbane X before going to the Saints. I don't think they want him back :nope.

Voss urges Charman to ignore Tigers
12 May 2007 Herald-Sun
Andrew Hamilton and Michelangelo Rucci
LEGENDARY Lion Michael Voss will counsel Jamie Charman to stay in Brisbane after cashed-up Richmond publicly placed him at the top of its recruitment wish list.
Voss, who captained the Brisbane Lions to three premierships, said Charman could cement his reputation as one of the club's great players - and joining Richmond would be a backward step.
"He's got the ability to lead the next generation of footballers to Brisbane's next premiership. Richmond are behind that," Voss said.
The former skipper also wants Charman to come out and declare his commitment to Brisbane if he intends to stay, saying trade talk could be de-stabilising to a young playing group that was exceeding expectations this year.
Voss, who could have named his price at 15 other clubs throughout his career, says Charman would be unwise to make money the sole factor in his decision.
"A few extra dollars in the pocket is nice, but he'll get that at Brisbane, and contentment with where you are is important," Voss said.
Lions coach Leigh Matthews also made some timely remarks about loyalty yesterday.
"Importantly, I only had one jumper on, and that is one of the great satisfactions of my life," Matthews said.
Matthews said he was not surprised at Richmond's interest, saying Charman would be one of the hottest properties on the market.
"At the moment there's 600 players in league football, 300 of them are uncontracted and there's 50 really good players uncontracted and Jamie is certainly one of those," he said. "But we're fully hoping and expecting Jamie will be a part of our medium and long-term future."

Jamie Charman's history over the last 3 years by SEN:
2004: Missed finals series with a knee injury
2006: missed games last year with a shoulder
2007: missed the start of this year with an achilles.
Pass!

MT, jolt my memory, whose decision was it to pick up Knobel ? ::)
-
I don't recall Knobel being injured when we picked him up. ???

Charman move on cards
By Andrew Hamilton
Courier Mail
June 21, 2007
BRISBANE Lions ruckman Jamie Charman is yet to start talks with the club about a new contract, and he is considering a move to a Melbourne club next year.
Sources close to the club say there is growing evidence that Charman is open to a move.
One possible scenario involves Brisbane offering Charman as a trade to St Kilda for forward Nick Riewoldt.
Riewoldt is yet to agree to terms with the Saints, and there remains a lot of talk that Brisbane is having a crack at luring him home for next year.
The Lions have struggled in attack and they are looking at ways to take the heat off co-captain Jonathan Brown.
Brisbane is believed to be interested in retaining Charman at a reasonable price, but it is also prepared to trade the premiership ruckman if he wants to leave.
Lions Chief executive Michael Bowers said the club was interested in talking to Charman about a new deal.
"Jamie is a good player and plays an important role," Bowers said.
"He is also a terrific guy and a good strong personality in the group."
But the Lions are determined to avoid another Shane O'Bree or Mal Michael situation - in which they lost a quality player and got nothing in return.
Charman, linked to Richmond earlier in the season, is yet to speak publicly about his intentions for next year. Calls to him last night were not returned.
The 25 year old's partner lives in Melbourne.
The Lions chose Charman as a zone selection in the 2000 draft, the year the boundaries on zone selections were altered, costing the club the chance to draft Riewoldt.
The Lions' ruck stocks are the envy of the league, yet coach Leigh Matthews regularly calls on Charman to do the job alone.
Two-time premiership tap ruckman Beau McDonald was used sparingly during his time in the side and Charman rucked solo from round 8 to round 11 before Cameron Wood was recalled last week.
Waiting in the wings is top draft pick Matthew Leuenberger who has been playing as a key forward in the reserves as he works his way back to full fitness after osteitis pubis.
Brisbane would struggle to keep all four ruckmen on its list while so many interstate clubs need ruckmen.
St Kilda, Richmond and Carlton all need a quality ruckman, and all will be loaded with high draft picks at the end of the season unless there is a drastic form reversal.
Richmond is yet to win a game this season, and it has battled in the midfield in the absence of Troy Simmonds and Trent Knobel, who have been injured.
Carlton lost Cameron Cloke to a shoulder injury and has used Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin to back up Cain Ackland. Neither is a front-line big man.
The Saints are also desperate for a mobile ruckman.
The pre-season signing of West Coast's Michael Gardiner has not paid dividends, with the former No.1 draft pick yet to play a game.

Pass, injury prone and IMO too old for us (what is he 25-27)

Agree bluey. Charman turns 25 in July so effectively 26 if we were to get him for 2008 onwards. It's the injury-proneness that's the main concern. He's missed heaps of footy over the past 4 years. We don't need another ruckman on our list who can't get out on the park. Knobel is 27 and finished.

Brisbane can't afford big recruits
22 June 2007 Herald-Sun
Andrew Hamilton
THE Brisbane Lions assured fans yesterday that they were not pushing premiership ruckman Jamie Charman out of the club, saying he knocked back an approach to begin contract talks.
Matthews said Brisbane attempted to initiate contract negotiations with Charman through his manager two months ago but were told he wasn't interested in starting talks until later in the season.
Lions coach Leigh Matthews also revealed the club had no money to recruit a big-name player.
Gun youngster Mitch Clark is also out of contract at the end of the season and is a high priority for Brisbane to re-sign.

I dont mind Charman and think he could add something to our side, however as already stated i think we would have to pay over the odds for him if we did get him.
So it is a pass for me.
Pick up Kreuzer (not sure on spelling) in the draft and if you wanted to try and steal someone from Brisbane i would be having a HUGE crack at Mitch Clark. This kid will be a gun forward.

Agreed, however would need to improve his kicking though.
Also, should try and lure Cam Wood down to punt rd

Charman says he doesn't want to leave Brisbane.
Charman not keen to leave Lions
The Age
July 11, 2007 - 5:14PM
A shock 27-point AFL win over West Coast provided a glimpse into the rebuilding Brisbane Lions' future - and off-contract ruckman Jamie Charman clearly wants to be a part of it.
Charman, 25, has been linked to Richmond and St Kilda this year since deciding to postpone talks about his future until the end of the season.
However, the premiership-winning ruckman said he would love to stay in Brisbane, describing the prospect of playing alongside the Lions' emerging youngsters as "exciting".
It's about finishing the year off for me, looking at the next year at the end of the season - it's more a personal thing than anything," said Charman, who plays his 100th game against Melbourne on Saturday night.
"But I love Brisbane, I love the Lions and I love this team. I'd love to stay.
"My life is set up here, my business is set up here. I'm looking to stay."

I say as long as the draft rules dont change that we stick to youth - get rid of senior players and stay on the bottom in 2008 as well so we can get Hartlett with the priority and Natanui with Pick 1 lol.
-
I hear that naitanui was BOG in the first division final

Stay on the bottom next year as well? No way. You're too extreme, ramps.

ditto. I will only accept coming last if we are clearly the worst side next year

I want a Richmond flag. We are no where near it. But Add a Kreuzer or a McEvoy, add a Pears or a Myers, Maybe an Otten or a Selwood in 2007 and we narrow the gap then Add Natanui and a Hartlett and 2 or 3 others, pick up a Dowler in the PSD this year and maybe another decent young gun next year in the PSD...and we are way closer than what we are now. People forget, Hawthorn stayed on the bottom 3 years running, they picked up priority picks and traded senior players. To win a flag in the future we will need to beat the likes of Hawthorn, Collingwood and the Interstate clubs- we will need to match all these clubs for young talent.
-
a word of caution
fantastic young talents do not always = good senior players
Sure I would love to see us grab some more good young talent, but you cannot expect that just drafting kids is enough. Richmond as a club needs a complete change in mentality, and that is something you don't get by tanking
-

I posted this in the U18 champs thread but it should go here.
The problem is could the club afford another season like this year. The pressure for change would be immense. Financially we aren't out of the woods yet and there may be a dip in membership numbers next year if we again fail to win any games early on.
In any case the AFL may change the draft rules again if Carlton ends up with the first pick despite not finishing last. Free agency may be introduced next year. Finish last again and we may lose a good young player.

Charman was most likely staying at the Lions anyway but he's copped another injury (calf) tonight up at the Gabba.
-
Charman is off the radar. Wanted a long-term deal which was too much with his record as far as injury goes.

who is on the radar

His manager (Paul Connors) is my second cousin and from memory a tiger supporter but he's a crafty bugger so don't expect to get charman cheap. I remember paul as a kid going to the corner shop to buy lollies and trying to sell them to me at a price that included shipping!! :help

Lions hold off interest in Clark
31 August 2007 Herald Sun
Andrew Hamilton
THE Brisbane Lions have withstood strong interest from two clubs for gun forward Mitch Clark.
However, it is understood the 19-year-old top 10 draft pick has only agreed to a one-year-deal.
It is believed the Lions re-signed Clark this week after a visit from his manager Colin Young.
Clark is seen as a key player for Brisbane, and coach Leigh Matthews has said the club wants him fit so he can have an extended run in the seniors.
Although he has had two injury-ravaged seasons at the club, Clark has shown glimpses of talent.
In his first game this season, he booted five goals against Collingwood at the Gabba in Round 9.
He has been troubled by foot, knee and shoulder injuries and has managed just 10 senior games since his debut against Geelong in Round 1 last year.
In his limited senior appearances, Clark has shown he can lead and take a strong mark and is considered very agile for a big man.
He has kicked seven goals in four games this year for a total of 10 and Brisbane see him as an ideal forward partner to Jonathan Brown.
It is understood West Coast and Fremantle were interested in the young West Australian who was pick No. 9 in the 2005 draft.
It is a key signing for Brisbane, who will again face raids from interstate rivals. Last season Daniel Bradshaw and Michael Rischitelli rejected offers from Melbourne-based clubs.
It is understood the Sydney Swans are interested in young ruckman Cameron Wood.
The Swans may need to recruit a ruckman as Darren Jolly is considering returning to Melbourne.
The Swans have had recruiting staff watching the 20-year-old at most Lions' reserves games this year.
Premiership midfielder Richard Hadley, in his first year back after two years on the sidelines recovering from successive knee reconstructions, has also attracted some interest.
The Lions have four ruckmen on their books and could struggle to keep them all.
Wood remains in contract, but appears to have been overtaken by 2006 No.4 draft pick Matthew Leuenberger.
Jamie Charman is close to agreeing to remain at the club.

Charman wants to much to leave so that's probably why he's staying. Brisbane would want either pick 18 or 19 for Wood. If Sydney are after him then that'll pump up his price.
Some bloke at training brought up again the Stephen King to us in the PSD rumour. We might as well close down Punt Rd if that happens :help.
-
injury free , we all know king is an all australian ruckmen, if we get him cheap why not
surely his bad luck with injuries wil stop
-
King was an AA ruckman 7 years ago but now he's 29 and we'd just be replacing one injury-prone ruckman we just got rid of with another. King hasn't played a full season since 2002 :o.
-
Forget King.
I would lose it if that happened...
Charman however.....
-
i dont want king, but say we had him just for one yr on real cheap wages, to help develop gus and be a back up ruckman. and then hope we get our hands on natanui the yr after
-
I don't see Gus cutting either,long term.
I wouldn't be the only one to turn if they grabbed King.
We can hire a better ruck coach than him, while Pato and Gus continue their baptism of fire.
I like Pato and have said he will be a required player.
I stand by this.
-
agree on patto, he is a required player and will be a gr8 player 4 us
