Gday from "Second Life " all you fellow OER members and guests
(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/3210/oerslyb2.jpg)
Yes that is Fluffy Tiger or as I am know in Second Life Fluffy Beerbaum.
I have been spending a lot of time in second life for the last eight weeks and that is why my dreamteam performance has not been up to its usaul standard but I am sure you don't mind that. I am having a blast and as you can see from the photo that I have taken my support of the Tigers with me. I have purcahsed a Tigers Tshirt and wear it quite often. In the background is my gallery/house that I built.
Why am I telling you all this, well I would love to have some fellow OER members join me in second Life so we could sit around and talk about if Richo would make a good captian or if we should trade Lids and the end of the year etc. Yes I know we could (and do and still would) talk about this here on the OER site but it would be great to sit around with CUB or Mopsy or Moi (and many others) look them in the face (or thier avatars face) and tell them in real time what I think.
I have a link if you would life to join up below and I am willing to make and pay for a group called the OER group on second life if I get any interest. Basic accounts are free and I would be willing to show any OER member the ropes (yes there is a learning curve) especaily this week while my english "Second Life" girlfriend is away (shh don't tell the real life wife). I have chosen to be life like looking male in SL but you can be anything you want, a dragon, robot or even a Tiger. If I had my choice I would be a life like female as the fashoins are fantastic but I just don't think I could get away with playing a femele role.
If you are already a SL resident please look up Fluffy Beerbaum and give me a IM or click on the SLURL below to go to my house. We can start the OER group of with a meeting at my place or on top of the harbour bridge if you want. Join up with me, its a blast, but please be prepared, it is a over 18 year old only place.

I don't have cable at home but a mate of mine showed me his Second Life a couple of weeks ago. He had forgotten about it for a few weeks and when he checked the room he was in was full of people checking him out because he hadn't moved in that time lol.

Well as a rule the system dosn't work like that becasue when you log of you disappear from veiw of others. However it wouldn't be the first time I have seen somebody standing in the one spot and not moving for a long time.
Come on you OER members and guests give it a go, there is a big rich world of things to do in SL and you don't even have to move from the place you are now. My offer to help still stands to all.

Im thinking of giving it a go in the next few weeks. I heard some people are making money out of it to lol.

Well the offer to show the ropes still stands to Ramps, any other OER member or guest. I am in World most nights at 7pm and every morning at various times.
Yes there are some making money out of SL Ramps. But it all depends on what talents you can bring into SL. I prefer the social side of it and have made a ton of friends from all around the world. No OER members yet have contacted me in SL but I hope there will be some.

Did any of you guys into this see it on 60 minutes tonight?
It is going crazy and people are spending big bucks on it also.
The creator said on average over 200,000 people use it per day and for an average of 4hrs at a time.
People are paying money for islands etc and people pay to go there and go to nightclubs etc.
This is crazy.

I just gotta learn how to work the darn thing lol

People need to get a life, how could you waste your money on buying virtual clothes etc?
They even have virtual prostitutes and you have to pay real money to have a virtual stuff, there are some weird people out there who need to get a life.
Dont disagree that if you can make money out it then why wouldnt you but i just cant believe that people are stupid enough to throw their money into it.
If your not happy with your appearance then do something about it, get face lift or go to the gym etc.

I'm not after a virtual stuff - there are cheaper ways to get that lol
But if you've got something to sell and there's suckers out there, why not.
Fluffy, this is what it says about creating a Slurl - how in the heck if I can't work out what they're saying here am I ever going to run this stuff lol
What is SLurl?
SLurl provides direct teleport links to locations in Second Life. If you have Second Life installed, clicking on the map link will automatically teleport you to that location in-world.
Why use SLurl?
In addition to allowing customized control over mapping locations in Second Life, SLurl also provides a better experience for web users who don't have Second Life. Instead of getting an error when clicking on web links that begin with "secondlife://", visiting a SLurl link gives potential new users a chance to sign up.
How can I create a SLurl?
Just link to SLurl.com with a Second Life location:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/<region>/<x-coordinate>/<y-coordinate>/<z-coordinate>/
So, for example, to link to Ahern(50,50,50), you would enter the following:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ahern/50/50/50 <-- The final z-coordinate is optional.
But wait, there's more! You can customize the window content by adding query strings:
Change the map window size: ?x=400&y=300
Change the title: ?title=Your%20title
Change the window image: ?img=http://slurl.com/yourimage.gif
Change the window message: ?msg=Your%20text%20here.
Put one or more elements together for a custom SLurl. When combining elements, the first element in the URL should be preceded with a "?", and later elements preceded with "&".
You can also display your own web content by inserting an iframe:
?iframe=http://slurl.com/iframe_example.php&x=250&y=200&title=Custom%20Title

Well that’s what I thought too when I first went into SL. Yes there are people spend stupid amounts of money on it, yes who need virtual clothes etc, etc. There are many things people spend there money on that others will just shake there heads at. I personally have spend about $50 in the three months I have been there which is nothing compared to what I have got back from the place and the hours of entertainment I have.
What I have discovered is the people, the community, the creativity that is out there. I have made friends from all parts of the world and are in contact with some even outside of SL now. Hell we even had a dance party in a tree house yesterday to celebrate the second child (in Real life) of one on my Island buddies. He is infact a very talented SL hat maker and is making me a Richmond Beanie to wear (no charge). But as you say Bull maybe I should get a life or join a Gym, well that what I was thinking at the Gym this morning.
Don't knock it until you have tried it. There are lots of very talented, intelligent, friendly people out there with real personalities and emotions behind those avatars. Not just those who want Cybersex or make a buck of others. I would love to show you around our Island (and the rest of SL) so you could see what people have built and created. It is quite frankly a stunning place.
Yes Moi, I will help you out tonight as I have said in message.
-
I am sure that it is quite fun Fluffy, dont dispute that.
I just cant believe that some people would be spening heaps of money on these sort of things.
The average daily usage is 4hrs per day, either i lead a very busy lifestyle or people have too much time on their hands coz i dont think i could spend anymore than an hour a day on it.
I am sure that there are lots of people who use it as a social outlet and to meet new people etc.
I would say that i am very receptive to new technology and developments etc but just cant believe that people would spend so much time and money on it.
Maybe i have made some generalisations in relation to why people use it. The guy on 60 minutes last night comes home from work everyday and then is the DJ at some nightclub on Second Life.
What ever happened to going down to the pub with a few mates for a beer?
-
What ever happened to going down to the pub with a few mates for a beer?
First of all, Bull, you spend quite a bit of time on OER - why don't you go out and get a life lol
At my stage of life, the last thing that would turn me on is going to the pub for a beer.
I spend hours on my computer.
It's the first thing I turn on when I get home and it's the last thing I turn off when I go to work the next morning.
I unashamedly luv it.
Doesn't mean I don't have balance in my life, I'm perverted (although I have my moments lol) or I'm going to spend a small fortune on SL.
I would like to see what all the fuss is about, join in if I like it, make friends, sell some stuff hopefully and just go with the flow.
Like anything, I'll know when I'm sick of it or I'm hooked.
WGAF!
-
You are right Bull and I could not believe people would spend on it either. I won’t tell you the number of hours I have spent in SL because you would stuff. Let’s just say I was up at 4am for a Art show opening the other week and 3 am for the party yesterday (dam these European and US people). It is very addictive and the fact that there is so much you can do so much for very little cash is attractive to me. Also becasue I live in a remote area makes it more attractive. I am hooked and it as much as I am hooked on the Tigers :lol
I am not sure how many times I could have got to the pub for my $50 but it would not have been many. Spent more than that to take my family to the pub to watch the Geelong game and what a waste that was :-[
Just to shock you even further I will give you a idea of the money some people will spend. The lady who owns the island that I have my Gallery/House on pays US$295 a month for the use of it. She can rent out parts or all of it if she wants. She started off renting some of it but she is not short of a quid and now charges NO rent to all 10 or so residents. Now that doesn’t count anything she spends on putting stuff on the Island, like the hangliders, submarines, galleries, waterfalls etc, or the initial $1600US it cost her in the for the island in the first place.
Now that spending!.
She has fallen in love with the people and the Art these people create or bring to SL. It is her passion and she can afford it so why not. No sex (well I don't think so), no other motives but the enjoyment she gets from it and the people. She is a very intelligent woman, a talented artist and a software expert.
Puts my $50 for thee months to shame.
She is not the norm as you can do most things for very little or no cash. I created a second avatar yesterday and had it fully dressed and up and running in an hour and about L$50 (about 20 cents). That avatar can do everything the Island owner can do except own virtual land. Not bad value I think.
Anyway would love to see you in there to try it. If you can get thought the first few days of learning (which many don’t) I am sure you would see why people spend so much of the First life in Second Life.

Our tech guru at work :lol
Wouldn't a SLurl just be a Second Life url (web address) where you can specify how the thing looks by adding flags (title, img, msg, etc...) onto the end of the address using ? and then & if there's more than one flag
Eg: http://MoiLand.com/main.php?title=Moi%20Land&msg=Be%20Afraid%tech%20guru%20at%large&img=http://slurl.com/Moiannaise.gif

is this the 2nd life thing which is Telstra or what?
-
I think so, Ramps
It's pretty good. Just download the program, grab a nick and come on in lol
-
is this the 2nd life thing which is Telstra or what?
Ramps its not realy anything to do with telsta. They have just got a large Island in SL with a harbour bridge, Ularu etc. You can join up if you are with teltra or anyother ISP. Need broadband though. Just follow the link in my sig and join up from there. Its free and I will try to help as much as possible. Moi got the hang of it realy fast.
-
the only thing i want to know is how much is it gonna take up in terms of internet allocation. i usually go pretty close to my limit most months.

Sl is a 3D grapic world and as such requires to download large amounts of data. It is a hungry hungry beast and I had to upgrade my Internet account to feed it.
-
Im thinking of giving it a go in the next few weeks. I heard some people are making money out of it to lol.
Ramps, you could open a Cooking with Ramps Restaurant :thumbsup
