Title: Our assistant coaches
Post by: one-eyed on June 18, 2007, 03:51:07 PM
With the RFC reviewing and restructuring the footy department for 2008, do you think there'll be any changes to our assistant coaches come year's end if Plough remains?

In Caro's article it said Craig McRae was safe as development coach, but what about the performances of Royal (midfield coach), Rawlings (forward coach) and King (defence coach). Royal and King have been there 3 years. Rawlings joined us at the end of 2006.

If changes should be made who should we consider as replacements?

I heard Nick Holland on SEN on Saturday arvo say Jade Rawlings is one of the most knowledgable people on football he's ever met and expects him to become a senior coach at some later stage  :o.

Mt - I thought Rawlings has only been there since October last year, replacing Wheadon.
I'd also been told  last year that Rawlings' knowledge of footy was very good.

Sorry GB. You're correct. I'll fix the first post.

I have heard the same about Rawlings, everyone that talks about him say that he has a fantastic football brain and knows the game inside out.

Funny that Wheedon has gone to the premiership favorites Geelong and is mentoring Bomber Thompson.

Royal is the one that I question.

TW and BR have worked together for a long time, I'd like to see some fresh blood in there. Someone from a recently successful administration who might question Terry's thinking every so often.

Maybe McRae could put a word to Vossy if he wants to be a assistant coach first. He said tonight he hasn't ruled out being an assistant coach but he doesn't see why people rule out absolutely anyone directly becoming a senior coach.

Royal I know is in trouble. Only a yes man. He can not put a sentence together without saying um.

I would like to get a premiership midfielder in there. Shaun Hart, even Drew Banfield, Ashcroft, Francou. Voss would be the ultimate.

I would like to get Clark Keating to work with Bellchambers next year  ;) an absolute clone.

Royal I think is gone.

Any other premiership mids going round who could fit the bill?Preferably one who has won a flag in recent times. Last 5 years or so. Again preferably a 2 way footballer. Not a downhill skier. One who knows the mandate of tempo footy.

David is working at Geelong and Steve is working for the AFL.
People dont realise how good David Wheadon is.
he actually writes the coaching manuals for the AFL.
very astute.

Royal in no rush

RICHMOND assistant coach Brian Royal calls it the coaching merry-go-round.

He's been on the ride before but isn't sure if he'll have a seat on it this time around.

The director of coaching at Richmond has spent more than a decade as an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Kangaroos and now the Tigers.

Royal, a champion Footscray rover, has missed senior coaching roles at St Kilda, Fremantle and Western Bulldogs.

Asked whether he had put his hand up for the coaching job at Melbourne, where he was an assistant from 2000 to 2003, he said yesterday: "I've been involved in the merry-go-round before and you don't have to put your hand up," he said.

"They (Melbourne) are the ones who will go out and initiate all that sort of stuff.

"From my point of view, if it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, life rolls on."

Royal said it was unfortunate Daniher had moved on.

"He is a very good coach and very professional person," he said. "There's no doubt at all that he'll get another job elsewhere."

Royal faced the media today after training. They mostly wanted to know if Chocco was throwing his hat into the ring for the Melbourne job. Royal just reiterated was he said in the paper this morning. That if Melbourne FC were interested in Brian Royal then they would contact him. He's been through this merry-go-round before and knows the process. The press asked if he had Terry's blessing and Chocco said that's why Terry had him face the media today (laughed).

He rates Neale Daniher as a coach and person and has no doubt that other clubs will be after his services.

Craig McRae has been cleared of any involvement in that Prince of Wales punch-up which Ch 9 news had vision of tonight.

Speaking of Voss, Terry said today he should do an assistant coaching role first.
