Despite such a disappointing year and the upcoming game on Sunday being against lowly drawing Port Adelaide, I hope all Tiger supporters turn up in droves to the 'G to honour a bloke who has given his blood, sweat, heart and soul to the Richmond Football Club. He's enigmatic and through a 14 year career he's mixed sheer brilliance with sheer frustration but he's ours and he's Richmond through and through :thumbsup. Who else spends 10-15 minutes after training signing autographs to hordes of kids and big kids screaming out "Richo!" :clapping
As a tribute to the big fella, what are your favourite Richo moments over the past 14 years?
-
i tend to mainly remember how inconsistent he is and how many goals he has missed
and respectively how his vintage player has killed us over his career.
go matty.
-
if he plays which he will this week, i hope he kicks 12 goals and anounces his immediate retirement. if he does that that woudl be my fav richo moment. going out on a high for the team, then doing th eteam thing and making way 4 the future
some players just have to accept they had their time and their chance
-
Congrats to the big fella :clapping
The one that sticks out in my mind the most is his 10 goal haul against the Doggies in 2004.
There are probably more but I can't think of any at the moment lol. I'm having a mental blank :lol
-
Richo kicking 6 against the Swans at the 'G in only his 4th game in tandem with Hoggy.
Kicking 27.3 in 95 before doing his knee thanks to the SCG fence :(
Kicking 91 goals in his comeback the following year
I'm was spewing at the time missing out on seeing him (I was OS) kick the winning goal against North in 2001 in the dying minutes after missing every shot before that lol. Secured our finals spot.
That goal against Hawthorn about 5 years ago where Richo was running into an open goal, took a bounce and stuffed it up then while being tackled through the point-line he was able to keep the ball and his right foot in bounds and kick the goal :rollin. One of the funniest things I've ever seen on a footy field and basically sums Richo up. He makes the easy things seem hard and the hard things look easy :thumbsup.

Congrats to the big fella :clapping
Favourite moment ...hmmm.... so many to chose from.
His 200th game was special at the Dome against Port Adelaide
That North game in 2001 - was classic Richo ;D
But the best moment for me wasn't in a game but was at training one time and Richo had a fractured cheekbone. This little kid came up to Richo asked for his autgraph and then said to the big fella like "your face looks sore" Richo said it was and then the kid said "would you like my Freddo frog Richo - you'll feel better" Richo said "that'd be great" but insisted they share half each - that kid walked away looking like he'd just won lotto :thumbsup
I know it's a cliche but he is the Heart and Soul of our Club and an outstanding ambassador to the entire game - a few players could learn a bit about how to treat the fans from Matthew Richardson

A few games that come to mind when i think of Richo are:
Friday night against the Pies at the G. Cant remember the year but Richo played on from outside the boundary and lost the ball, then he kicked an ugly snap to seal the game. I remember that Scooter Moore was playing and he also kicked a great goal in the last qtr to get us over the line.
Another Friday night at the G against the Cats, it was a wet night and Richo booted 6. Remember watching him tear the Cats apart and we were up in level 2 of the Southern Stand singing "Richo, Richo man"
I also remember watching him play reserves against the Roos when he was dropped many years ago and he took about 18 marks from memory.
-
absolute champ, congrats on the 250 Richo :bow
-
Richo - flawed champion
Frustrating, yet hilarious. You can't change him, so you end up laughing these days at how he butchers kicking.
Beautiful person inside and out!
Tiger through and through
:gotigers

He broke Rex Hunt's record from my memory and he marked 20+

Yeah first game you Mentioned Birdman rd 11 1997 v Pies on Queens Birthday wkend Friday nite.
My highlights that night was Richo took two speccies in 3rd quarter on Shauble punt rd end 15 out exactly same spot hit the post both times. Then later in the quarter marked members stand side 50 on the boundary went back and drilled it. Proceeded to kick the winning goal palying on after taking a mark in the square just as he was being tackled. Remember Benny Gale taking about 4 marks on half back to repell the Pies from trying to level the scores.
Tigs 11 11 77 Pies 10 11 71
Of course his 10 goals against the dogs in rd 8 Tigs 15 15 105 to 10 22 82
even more special was the week before up in Sydney coming back from injury he kicked 7 out of 10.
Remember in the first minute he got the ball about 70 out took off with 2 bounces and drilled it from 50. Tigs 10 7 67 to 8 6 54.
His comeback from a knee reco rd 1 1996 against the Dons kicked 6 in a losing side. Looked as good as he has ever been that season. Tigs 15 14 104 to Dons 19 8 122
Made Silvagni look Silly later that year in a narrow defeat to the Blues in rd 10 kicked 7 6 out of 13 12 90 and took 17 marks ran Silvagni ragged to bad Benny made a crucial error that allowed Diesel Williams and Heaver to kick the winning goals.
My favourite all time Richo moment was rd 17 2001 grudge match v the Dogs at the dome. Had taken abt 6 marks till 3 qt time and looked okay but we fell 16 points down early in the last quarter and Richo just stepped up to the plate. Another 7 marks in the final quarter including one on defensive side of wing to repel a dogs thrust in the dying moments two goals including one I will never forger boundary line medallion club side nthern end at the 50 to put us in front. The emotion that night on Richo's face and all the supporters at the end of that one was palpable after our 15 12 102 to 15 10 100 victory.I was on a high for about 3 days after that and I still get goosebumps whenever that game gets brought up with the lads I go to the footy with. Plus we made a killing on us at the TAB and the cas that night but that is a separate issue.
Richo, good luck all the best you have been a credit to yourself your family and your football club and I hope that your milestone is a memorable one and the team can get up for you as your loyalty and committment is inspiring. You have provided me with 15 seasons of memories and if it was humanely possible I wish you could be playing for the next 15. I can only hope wish and prey that in the twilight of your career the team successess such as finals and premierships can be a fitting resolution to your already stellar career. :thumbsup
Keep up the great work champ. Boys from Q49 Olympic Stand.

Richo - flawed champion
richo in 2 words :clapping
Being only 17, my memories of Richo probably aren't as extensive as others.
My greatest memory of Richo was in 04 IIRC when we played Sydney in the wet and Richo was dominant that day

Yep, yep and yep. Great story. When I was down in Melb for his 200th, Mini-me and I went to the museum and Mini-me asked about Richo and Dennis there brought out a big folder full of articles about the big fella. Said only Jack Dyer had a bigger folder.

Well said Hellenic. I'm just sorry I won't be there for his 250th

looks like u r the only tool birdbrain
u totally dont get it do u
yes we all know richo has been fantastic and will be remembered as a tiger gr8
but, he is not bigger than the club, the team nor the game, better players have come and gone
the reality is, the tigers cannot go fwd with the current structures and no matter how good richo has been, no matter how hard the fella tries, he is no longer a match winner.
not even his inspirational moments inspire anymore because they are followed up by a total f up
buddy is teh new richo mkII. i remember when richo started they called him the stuff athlete and gazelle. thats buddy now!
richo sugar joel tiv and the like must all make way for the team to develop a young group together
cleve and jack should be developing and gaining experience over richo in the fwd line
no disrespect to richo, but its a mistake keeping him on the list and stalling the development of the team
a birdbrain like urself cannot see that
-
ppl tend to forget that the last time richo really won games for us and really sent the fear of god to the opposition was the game in teh wet v sydney where he won the game 4 us off his own boot, and teh 10 goal haul v the doggies about what 4 yrs ago.
richo no longer has the impact that he used to have. why cant he do a wayne campbell and say time is up, its generation next time, i gave it my best , thanku all
this is why richmond will never go fwd, we just cannot see the bigger picture and do whats right 4 the future
-
Seeing that we have only won one game this year it is hard for him to win games off his own boot.
Off the top of my head, the Bombers games last year comes to mind, i think Richo did alright that night.
Didnt he kick 9? I could be wrong.
-
Yes that was a great game, especially as it was the Bummers.

wow fantastic effort against who? i rest my case. wasnt it kepler dudly wow great work
the future cannot be compromised by aging players with reputations.
look richo has been gr8, but its time to move on and start fresh

that happened in the horrible 04 season didn't it

correct, in the wet richo just totally creamed the swans
but that was richo of yesterday, not today
-
you make some good points, players like Jack, Cleve and (if he can get his head right) Schulz would benefit from fast-tracking there development into the team, a la Patto who really has come on in leaps and bounds this year
But you can't deny that the Cho still has value to his team. The work ethic he displays is invaluable to the kids, just a shame they are not willing to learn off the great man.
Leave Richo between the 50 m arcs, let him run around likes Goodes, and you can then have Cleve, Jack or Schulz learning the trade in the forward 50
-
Should be made Captain next year while one of the younger lads gets more experience, preparing for the job.
Onya Richoooooooooo :gotigers

Hear hear, CUB
Maybe he could also do what M Lloyd is doing this year and use the captaincy to impose himself on contests around the ground, and at the same time leaving the forward line open for the likes of Schult, Riewoldt and Cleve to strut their stuff. He is fit enough to do that.
And yes MT that North Melbourne moment was classic Richo.
I'll never forget the day he kicked 10 against the doggies though, he had the whole southern stand willing him on, it was a great moment, and yet something that he had to do in his career to give it a sense of validity.
-
Ch 10 news showed Richo having his photo taken in front of the team of the century painting. Richo said he has loved his time and although there might be a couple of incidents he would've changed (they showed the time he went off at Knights' poor kick), the rest he wouldn't. He's flattered by the "Richo man" song.
-
My favourite Richo moment was when he asked Russell Crowe whether there was going to be a Gladiator part II on the Footy Show.
-
Funny at the time and he looked like a real doofus but in fact there is talk of a Gladiator II which could either be a prequel or a sequel and talk is Russell Crowe could appear in flashbacks (if it is a sequel)
-
Send your tribute messages to Richo on reaching 250 games for the Richmond Football Club.
We will publish a selection of messages on the Richmond website leading up to the Round 16 clash between the Tigers and Port Adelaide when Matthew will play his milestone game.

You deserved so much better than that Richo :(. Sheesh you had to lead up the ground to get the ball as well as run back and kick the goals.
I don't how most of your teammates can look you in the eye after that. Sadly the senior teammates who should've been up for your 250th let you down the most.
-
Great gesture by David Rodan to run up to Richo as he was just about to walk of the ground.
As for his team mates, weak as pee!

The Richo DVD shown prior to the game was also well done by the Club :clapping.

thought it was fantastic when Richo went up to give Jack a brief heart to heart after his first goal

must have been a gr8 dvd, must have instilled alot of passion amongst the lads
it actually showed by the way they played
passion does not win you games. can u win u some but not when it counts
didnt we learn that in the northey days
passion got us through most the season
with skill we beat the bombers, who can forget the silky skills of matty knights
but hey, when it really counted, with all the passion we had, we played a skillful cats team at waverly
wow passion did us wonders then
liek i said, if a team needs a milestone to lift them up, somthing is wrong

Richo’s proud achievement

HE MEANS so much to Richmond supporters, and the Tiger army would have loved nothing more than to see the great man, Matthew Richardson, saluted with a win in his 250th match, but it just wasn’t to be.
“It would have been nice to walk off the ground a winner, but you can’t always be a winner in a milestone game,” a philosophical Richardson said after the loss to Port Adelaide.
“Plenty of other players have done that as well. Unfortunately, that was just the way it went today.”
The Tiger champion finished the game strongly with four goals but failed to make an impact in the first half, and admitted his big game had been a struggle early.
“I was frustrated with myself in the first half because I couldn’t get into the game, and I didn’t want to embarrass myself in a milestone game,” he said.
“With all the attention on you, the last thing you want to do is walk off the ground embarrassing yourself.
“It was just one of those days. We stayed with them early, it was a pretty free-flowing type of game. They’re a high-scoring, high-intensity side, but it was probably going to be tough for us to sustain that level of play over four quarters, and that’s how it turned out.”
But the result in no way diminished the achievement of the champion full-forward, whose four majors on Sunday edged him past Peter Hudson and Wayne Carey on the all-time goalkickers’ list.
“I’m proud of the milestone and I’m proud that I’ve played at Richmond for my whole career,” Richardson said.
“Obviously I would have liked a little more success over the years, but I can’t change that now. All we can do is look to the future. You never write off your chances that you might play in finals and I’ve still got that hope, and that’s why you butter up for another pre-season.
“I’ve had great support all week from all the Richmond supporters, from everyone around the club, my family and all my friends. It’s quite touching the number of texts and phone calls I got during the week from people I used to play with, and it’s really nice to hear from all those sorts of people.”
With just one win in 16 rounds, 2007 has been one of the toughest of Richo’s 15 years in the yellow-and-black, but he maintains he has no trouble motivating himself for battle each week.
“It’s not hard because that’s what we’re here for, and if you can’t get up for a game of AFL footy I don’t think you should be on a list,” he said.
“Look, obviously it’s a difficult year. What gets me up – and I’m sure it’s what gets the other boys up– is that we can try and get a few wins and get some sort of momentum going into next year and get some games into our young guys.”
So having reached 250 games, is the magical 300 mark on the radar?
“Who knows? ” he said. “I mean, I’m contracted next year so I’m obviously going to play next year, and I’ll be 33 at the end of that contract so who knows what happens.
“I wouldn’t make any outlandish statements, but if I’m still contributing I’d like to still play. But a lot can happen in 12 months.
“The body feels fine. I haven’t missed many games in the past four years and I haven’t had any soft-tissue injuries for three years now, touch wood.
“I feel like I present myself in good condition, so I can keep playing if they want me to.”

The song was by Ronan Keating

I dont think it was ronan keating tigertailz, but i could be wrong. I remember one line that went something like "sometimes its hard to be me" which was totally appropriate for the man lol, had some great footage, and made you feel so proud :)
-
I believe the song was "Superman" Its not easy to be me
sung by Five for fighting.

I stand corrected 2JD!I hear it every now and then on the radio and it reminds me of Ronan Keating.
The song is"Its not easy to be me" by Five for Fighting.Quite an appropriate choice really for Richo!
