Title: Tigers vs Bombers R21 "blockbuster" - Caro
Post by: one-eyed on July 28, 2007, 03:46:04 AM
From the Age | Caroline Wilson | July 28, 2007

KEVIN SHEEDY'S will be some farewell tour.... the round-21 Richmond game at the MCG could yet become a fully ticketed affair.

The Tigers and the Bombers will meet next week to brainstorm what now looms as a blockbuster of Anzac Day proportions.

While Denis Pagan was pushed unceremoniously and without emotion from Carlton one- and-a-quarter seasons early, Sheedy - who too was pushed - will ride out waving on a cavalcade. There will not be a dry eye in the house.

Just 25,000 tickets left to be sold

Sheedy farewell Fed square plans

Michael Warner

ESSENDON and Richmond's Round 21 blockbuster could be shown live on the big screen at Federation Square.

Bomber officials have held talks with Fed Square chiefs about showing a live telecast against the gate.

The MCG showdown is expected to be Kevin Sheedy's final Melbourne match in charge of his beloved Bombers.

It could also be former skipper James Hird's last AFL appearance in Victoria, unless the Bombers make the finals after their upset victory against Adelaide yesterday.

A sell-out crowd of up to 95,000 is tipped for the twilight clash on Sunday, August 26, with just 25,000 tickets still to be sold.

Sheedy played 251 games with the Tigers from 1967-79, including three premierships, before joining Essendon where he has coached for 27 seasons.

His last match will be against the Eagles in Perth in Round 22.

Essendon would need approval from the AFL and the game's broadcaster, Fox Sports.

No, they are definitely shared, due to the "dreamtime agreement", with both matches for the year divided. It should be a huge windfall for the club.

It seems the RFC is the only one who doesn't believe the Essendon game will be ticketed  ???

The Round 21 clash between Richmond and Essendon has not as yet been a declared ticketed game.

At this stage, those with a 17-game RFC membership will be able to attend the game and enter with their 2007 membership card. Further information will be posted on the Club's website if the situation changes.

This could be an anticlimax if the speculation about Hird being injured again is true. Hird hardly trained today.

If Richard Lounder can kick 4 goals leaning against a goalpost then it should be a breeze for Hird to still play.

Bombers to send off legends
18 August 2007   AFL
Daryl Timms

ESSENDON will farewell coach Kevin Sheedy and champion James Hird with a pre-match extravaganza at the MCG in Round 21, in what looms as their last games in Melbourne.

The Bombers are finalising details of the pre-match tribute to recognise Sheedy's 27 seasons as coach and Hird's standing as one of the club's greatest players.

And the pair will also be honoured after the game against Richmond, the club where Sheedy started his career as a player.

Fireworks, guards of honour and video highlights on the big screen are planned for what will be Sheedy and Hird's last games in Melbourne unless the Bombers make the eight and play a home final in September

But footy fans who want to farewell Hird and Sheedy had better move quickly to obtain tickets

The AFL is expecting 80,000-plus at the game and already more than 50,000 tickets have been sold, leaving 15,000 public tickets and 5000 members' reserve positions - including standing room - available for sale.

It's unlikely that any general-admission tickets will be available for the game, which kicks off tomorrow week at 5.10pm.

The AFL announced yesterday that the game had been classified as a "reserve on demand" match.

"This means that all seating in the ground is being made available to reserve in accordance to demand, and if all public areas of the MCG sell out prior to the match, general admission tickets will not be available," the AFL said in a statement yesterday.

Essendon plays West Coast at Subiaco in the final home-and-away game of the season.

Both Essendon and Richmond warned fans who wanted to attend the game to pre-book a reserved seat through Ticketmaster.

Only reserved seat allocations on level four of the Great Southern Stand, Ponsford Stand and Olympic Stand remain available for sale. Once these seats are sold, restricted-view seats and standing-room positions will be made available.

In the AFL members' reserve, seating bays that are generally held for "walk up" admissions on the day are available to be reserved.

Reserved seating is available on level four and once all seating has been sold, standing-room positions will be released.

Tickets are available for club members, AFL members and the general public to buy through Ticketmaster outlets, by phoning 1300 136 122 or visiting www.ticketmaster .com.au

Wright was saying we'd make a $500k profit a while back even though we'll finish last. Hopefully this "blockbuster" will pump us way past that. Wright will want us to draft Hird after he retires so we can get another big gate next year  ;D.

Ticketing Update: Round 21 v Essendon

The round 21 clash against Essendon is a "Reserve on Demand" game meaning that all areas of seating will be made available to reserve in accordance to demand. If all public areas of the MCG sell out prior to the match, general admission access will not be available.

Given the public interest in this game, we recommend that 17-game members wishing to attend, pre-book a reserved seat through Ticketmaster to avoid disappointment. For our 11-game members wanting to attend, we also suggest that entry and a reserve seat is purchased to guarantee entry.

TICKETING INFORMATION

Only reserved seat allocations on Level 4 of the Great Southern Stand, Ponsford Stand and Olympic Stand remain available for sale.

Once these seats sell, restricted view and standing room will be released.

AFL RESERVE TICKETING INFORMATION

Seating bays that are generally held for "walk-up" will be available to be reserved.

Reserved seating is currently available on Level 4 in the AFL Reserve. Once all seating has been sold, standing room will be released.

Tickets are still available for Club Members, AFL members and the general public to purchase through Ticketmaster outlets, by phoning 1300 136 122 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com.au.

Sheedy demands record roll-up
22 August 2007   Herald Sun
Mark Robinson

KEVIN Sheedy's enthusiasm for records has one last roll of the dice on Sunday -- and it involves eternal rival Collingwood.

Sheedy, belying claims that he is bitter in his last days at Windy Hill, last night called on all Essendon and Richmond fans to help break their club's individual attendance records.

The Kevin Sheedy-James Hird extravaganza against the Tigers is tipped to be a sell-out, meaning a crowd of 90,000-plus.

Richmond's home-and-away record is 92,436 -- against Collingwood in Round 4, 1977, at the MCG. Essendon's is 94,825, also against Collingwood, in Round 4, 1995.

"It would be fantastic for the clubs because they're my two clubs," Sheedy said.

Sunday's twilight match, starting at 5.10pm and which will have pre and post-game events celebrating the careers of the coach and the champ, will be played on a perfect night for football.

The weather bureau expects a maximum of 16C.

Sheedy said last night he wanted Collingwood punted out of the record books.

"I'm pretty sure Goughy (MCC boss Stephen Gough) said it was sold out so whatever that figure equates to, I don't know," Sheedy said. "All I know is that if we've got one chance to knock over these records, it's got to be this one."

Sheedy is likely to coach his second-last game for Essendon on Sunday with his last coming against West Coast at Subiaco in Round 22.

The Eagles and the Bombers are also planning a huge night of celebration for Sheedy and Hird.

Sheedy said he was excited about the Tigers clash.

"I am excited, it will be good," he said.

"We will have had Dreamtime at the G and now this, so it's great for both clubs.

"If we get 90,000 on Sunday, we'll end up with 150,000 people watching the two games between the 16th placed team and the 13th paced team -- beautiful."

Sheedy is also expected to walk to the Tigers' cheer squad end to thank them.

Unlikely to knock off the Melb v Coll crowd from '58 but we should go close to topping the '95 Anzac Day crowd. The 'G now holds 100k. Ironically with Sheeds leaving Essendon, our biggest H&A crowd was for when Hafey first coached against us with the Pies. The '82 crowd was when we kicked 10 goals in the last quarter.

Sheedy-Hird game attracts massive demand
6:16 PM Thu 23 August, 2007
AAP

FANS have already snapped up more than 65,000 tickets for Sunday's Kevin Sheedy and James Hird farewell match.

The AFL advised that some reserved seat and standing room tickets were still available for the game, which will attract a crowd of at least 80,000.

"This match has been classified as 'reserve on demand', meaning that all seating in the ground is being made available to reserve in accordance to demand, and if all public areas of the MCG sell out prior to the match, general admission tickets will not be available," the league said in a statement.

"The AFL, Essendon and Richmond advise any patrons wishing to attend the game to pre-book a reserved seat through Ticketmaster to avoid disappointment."

IT WILL be standing room only for Sunday's Essendon-Richmond MCG blockbuster and the Melbourne farewell of Kevin Sheedy and James Hird.

The Bomber greats will be given an emotional send-off by more than 90,000 fans as they enter their 1136th match together –– their last at the home of football.

A handful of restricted view seats are expected to be snapped up in the next few hours.

About 2500 standing room tickets will then go on sale.

Melbourne Cricket Club officials today warned no tickets would be available on match day.

Fans are being encouraged to take public transport amid fears of a car park nightmare. A Jehovah's Witness convention is being held at nearby Rod Laver Arena.

The monster crowd is likely to break the all-time record attendance for an Essendon-Richmond game, set at 90,564 in 1982.

The MCC members stand is also expected to be at full capacity, with the last visitor tickets snapped up on Wednesday.

Perfect weather is forecast for the clash, with clear skies and a top of 19C expected to bake the MCG in sunshine.

A special 100-page AFL Record will be on sale outside the ground, offering a pictorial history of Sheedy's and Hird's careers, premiership victories and milestones.

A guard of honour will be formed by various Essendon members, volunteers, life-members and staff to welcome the two legends as they enter the field before the first bounce.

The final siren will be followed by a highlights package showcasing each man's journey at Windy Hill, along with a fireworks display.

Looking forward to this game.  Not because I think it'll be a great game but to see how the kids react to playing in front of such a big crowd.
We've been embarrassed so many times on the big stage in the last 20 years, would be awesome to win this one.  It'll always be remembered as Hird & Sheedy's last game - but I would prefer to remember in 20 years that was the game we ruined their fairytale  :gotigers

Was thinking along those lines also.
Some of the greats have been the one's that can perform during the finals (pressure cooker) games.
This will be certainly one of those with the crowd and the atmosphere.
Will be interesting to see which guys stand up. I think Foley will be one, just doesn't seemed to get fazed.
Will be keeping a close eye on the lids and blingers especially but also the others just to see who may be our future finals star(s)

They said "Jehovah"   :lol

Quote
OFFICIAL: I'm warning you. If you say 'Jehovah' once more-- [MRS. A. stones OFFICIAL]

Right. Who threw that?

[silence]

Come on. Who threw that?

CROWD: She did! It was her! He! He. Him. Him. Him. Him. Him. Him.

OFFICIAL: Was it you?

MRS. A.: Yes.

OFFICIAL: Right!

MRS. A.: Well, you did say 'Jehovah'.

CROWD: Ah! Ooooh!... [CROWD stones MRS. A.]

OFFICIAL: Stop! Stop, will you?! Stop that! Stop it! Now, look! No one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle!

Do you understand?! Even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say 'Jehovah'.

CROWD: Ooooooh!... [CROWD stones OFFICIAL]

WOMAN #1: Good shot!

All restricted seating has been sold and only a handful of standing room tickets are currently left.

Crowd size?

Depends on MCC, all visitor tickets are sold and the only time I nearly missed a Granny was when Melbourne played Essendon (a lot of Ess MCCers) so that should be close to max.
When last heard 1500 tickets in AFL members left.
All in all should easily be biggest crowd of year including GF, as the Granny has too many freebies corporate stuff set aside that doesn't get filled for some reason.
All the more reason to leave the granny for the Members of cometing clubs, but that's another story.

Nice if we could really push 100K and good move sharing the gate too, thanks sheeds  :thumbsup

On a limb 100,008 and 40,000 odd singing the Tigers theme song @ about 19:45 this arvo. If that doesn't send a tingle up the spine  :help

We'll need both Lids and Blingers pace and run through the lines today if we are to win. Try to run the Bombers aging legs of their feet and expose their lack of pace on the bigger grounds.

We have enough experienced hands in the midfield and up forward so IMO it'll be our young defence that will be tested as far as reacting under a massive crowd.

Us getting an early goal would do wonders to settle any nerves.

I know it's the Bombers milestone game, but you'd think the commentators wouldn't be so stuffing biased.
Everything they do is wonderful - which couldn't be further from the truth - and we're just hopeless.

Joel and Sugar have been great. Showing the way as leaders. Joel has gone back into packs about 4 times tonight. Richo would be up there too without the brain implosions  :wallywink. Keep him outside 50.

First and foremost great win tonite.
Big game atmosphere the kids stood up tonight and that bodes well for the future.
To stuff up the Bombers finals hopes fantastic.
To sing the song with as much gusto as I did two weeks ago fantastic.
To watch Essendon fans endure our song whilst they waited for post match festivities fantastic.

As for the replay on 7 if the 1:10 game is on in Melbourne then 7 does not show it.
Hence the Hawks Dogs game was not on tonight. Yet the Power Hawk game which was the 1:10 game last week was on ch 7 at half ten last wk b/c the game was in Tassie. That is the agreement in the contract drawn up by the networks. Would have been nice to see a replay of our game tonite but I would imagine it would be game of the Round of Foxtel at 8pm on Tuesday which would be grand as the Tiges premiership success over Carlton in 1969 is following at 10. A night to warm a true tigers heart a bit of the old and the new. :thumbsup

I listened to SEN early this morning, and didn't hear one mention of us winning.  It was just about the Bombers.

Patrick might think it was incidental  ::)  Might be a better way to look at the game for him than the stark reality him and his fellow Bomber supporters need to face - they're crap!

l noticed alot of you are addicted to SEN radio  ;D

only thing l was upset with all night was the players not talking enough this leading to clashes with our own players
this is purely from lack of talk which starts with the leadership group

its nice to see players attacking the ball but l seen 3 tiger players fighting for the ball against themselves cause no Essendon player could get in the pack  ;D

watch the replay and count how many times we tryed outmarking or contesting each other its a joke

and also the ammount of Bomber fans compared to Tiger fans surely what kept them away ????

And l'm peeed off l missed the fight while at the dunny what happened who won ????

If it was the one in the MCC went for a while and dudes just seemed to be joining in from everywhere.
I was really just trying to watch the game with the fight as a side spectacle.
Just using it as an excuse to tell the bomber idiots in front of me (quite loudly) to sit down and watch the game.
Seemed to be some stubborn old fart in the middle of it all - some people just don't learn

Took the cops and security long enough to get there also.

With the fight the other week in the bullring between mel and coll.
It may be the mcc members booing the southern stand at the cricket during the wave.
In all seriousness though they have some real wankers in the MCC these days.

A dude I know had a video cam and got some footage of the fight.
If I can get hold of it and figure out utube, will try and get it up sometime.

Once again WHAT A DAY/EVENING "Twilight"  :gotigers

TV deal only allows Ch 7 to replay the interstate games on Sunday nights - in particular the Tassie and Gold Coast ones. So sweetner for Dawks & Roos because they hardly had any games on FTA this year

Yes Patrick Smith was last seen eating a double serve of humble pie.
One piece after last nights game and a piece of it will be baked after each of their
incidental losses in the future with that putrid list that they have now inherited.
Hope he has a voracious appetite b/c he'll be eating it post match for a long time  :lol :lol :lol

There was an article in the HeraldSun yesterday along those lines, cant remember who wrote it....went along the lines of "typical of Richmond managing to win when no one actually cares".and "playing against a powerhouse team"
Well, we care and it couldn't have happened to a better team on a more fitting occasion!!!!
