Title: Avoid the Spoon or Priority Pick?
Post by: one-eyed on August 26, 2007, 10:20:55 PM
A win next week would get us off the bottom the ladder and avoid the spoon; a loss secures us a priority pick in the draft.

What to do?

Gotta try and develop a win at all costs mentality in the team - definitely go for the win.

Carlton win - Avoid the spoon.

Dees win - Get the priority.

I'd love to see Carlton come last AGAIN.  :lol

I dont really care about the Dees.

Pity we play before them!

I hate the spoon though and Im flying over to watch the game next week so I'm going to be a selfish and say win rather than the best result for the club draft-wise and lose.  :shh

today was our last game

next week means nothing

lets lose and get a better pick and hope melb rolls over and lets the blues win

Carlton beat the Dees
We lose to the Saints
This is the what "must" occur next weekend.

Priority pick. That has been our agenda from very early on this season.
Lets not sway from this now that we have reached the finish line slightly in front.
We have won our two Grand Finals against Scumwood and Scumdon and that in itself should provide a positive impetus going into 2008. An "honourable" loss next week and that sought after priority pick just makes the launch pad for that impetus for 2008 and beyond just a little more positive. :thumbsup

do we still get a priority pick? i thought the priority pick was now decided over 2 seasons and 8 wins or less over that period.  i thought we just get opportuniity for 1st pick if the blues win?
or have i missed something?

I want a win, I hate the thought of losing, and especially going out to deliberately lose :gotigers

Yeah I'd rather have a win and not get the wooden spoon, even if it means we don't get first pick.

As it stands we still get a priority pick at the end of the first round (pick 17 or 18) before round 2 commences. If we win, weose that pick for winning more than 4 games (I think), plus move up above the loser of Melbourne  and Carlton. FWIW, Iwould rather a winning feeling to end the season even though I know it will cost us an exta kid in the top 20. It is a flaw in the system hat we must makeourselves lose to gain.  :banghead

Lets no get carried away here, yesterday we played a team that reminded me of us 2 years ago, shi'te but played above themselves.

Next week we play a team that has owned us for a good while now.

It'll be a different story though if Adelaide win on Friday night, then the 8 is settled straight away. Saints will have nothing to play for.

As it stands we get pick 2 if we finish bottom or 15th. Carlton will not win.

Stuff this,

By winning we will give carlton a 3 peat of wooden spoons

Its Kruez, Cotchin or MOrton anyway. :thumbsup

Carlton have the draft pick reguardless they have control over the situation

if they want a spoon stuffing give it too them as beating the saints is what l want
l'm still humiliated after frawley had us line up and clap off Burke after they pumped the poo out of us at the Dome a few years ago something l will never forget

PUMP THE SAINTS

if we dont we we wont get anything for our lose & we will be classed as poo for getting another spoon a tag not good for kids or sponsors or supporters
we will finish with #2 pick reguardless of the ladder 16th or 15th
& the bonus is we kill the Saints Finals hopes ;D

We all know Carlton is gonna tank and get the PP, so we should go all out for the win and avoid the wooden spoon.

We have a bad record against the Saints, so it'll be good to get a win against them and finish the season with a win  :gotigers

I'm really in the middle on this one. I want pick one or two, and not pick three; and that priority pick at 17 or 18 could turn out to be immensely valuable in the long run. I also really want a win as well.

So I've decided that the way to go is to draw with the Saints, which keeps our priority pick (with 16 points) and guarantees that we avoid the spoon. The chances of a draw are very remote, but that's what I'd like in an ideal world. In this scenario (ie the draw), if Melbourne lose they get the spoon on percentage (and we get pick 2); if Carlton lose they get the spoon, and picks one AND two due to inferior percentage (and we get pick 3).

Yep I agree, especially about the Frawley bit.  Wouldn't you just love to see Jack make big cousin Nick cry?

Can't see that having a win will change people's opinions of us.  They still think we're crap.
Lose by a point and grab the credit for a great close game, but also hopefully get the number one pick.

But also depends if there's not much difference in picks one to three, in that case I'd say try and win at all costs.

But if there's someone we absolutely have to have, tank it by playing every kid on our list lol, who will actually probably go out and do their best anyway.  So not really tanking.

Finishing the season on a win can have more influence than you think especially for the young guys. It will be the last thing they remember before the first game next season. Momentum is everything and it does last through the break and the preseason. Unless it's absolutely crucial that we require a priority pick to get the player we need I'd say lets keep the ball rolling and go for two on the trot!  :thumbsup

Melbourne v Carlton ...

Melbourne Win: Carlton 1st, 3rd

Carlton Win: Richmond 1st

seems like carlton want that ruckman ... and we want a midfielder (Cotchin) ...

so i don't think that if we get 1st pick we will take that ruckman ...

so i believe try to stuff the saints up (which is unlikely) finish 15th and not get the wooden spoon ...

yet, if we get the wooden spoon ... we are going to clean out the list anyway ...

with ... Gaspar, Kingsley ... gone ... and 4 or 5 more players not there next year ...

our list will be very young and developing ... which is great ...

i am PRAYING ... that Tivendale, Moore, Hall, Knoble, Hartigan, P.Bowden are off the list ...

6 new 17,18,19 year olds would make 07 into an important year in our development ...

i just see some senior players saving there careers at the moment ...

Matthew Richardson
Kane Johnson
Nathan Brown
Joel Bowden
Shane Tuck
Kayne Pettifer
Troy Simmonds
Chris Newman

should be the ONLY SENIOR players still there !!!

l thought Tivendale been playing some good football lately his even bulked up a little
there aint no way he be delisted & l'm sure Moore will be around next year

You must be very young if a 25 year old is a senior!

Can't beat winning

Especially a win against a team that has no respect for us and thinks we are a rabble (and over the years they've known about rabbles ;D). Can't stand the Saints - a win against them is almost as good as beating the Pies, Bombers or Blues - seriously.

It would be great fillet going into 2008

I'm pro-tank this week  :wallywink

No one will remember a win this week in 5-10 years time but the youngster we pick up with our priority pick could be that extra player we need in that time to win a flag. With such shallow draft top 20 picks are too valuable to just throw away. More early picks means a better chance of picking up talent. We as a Club should play the percentages.

I like GB's idea. Go the draw  :thumbsup

Think about how you'll feel in a week after the euphoria of a win is gone, especially if Adelaide win and the Saints were knocked out of the finals anyway.
Then think about that lovely lump of a lad we might get who'll keep us salivating all summer  ;D

Easy choice really!

 :gotigers

History will show this is the era of tanking and the wooden spoon will be looked on as cheats rather than losers.

A credible loss in this situation I can handle pretty easy! :thumbsup

Understand totally where the other of ewes are coming from.
But during the game I will be barracking as hard as I usually do for a win.
If we lose I will be dissapointed, but will quickly get over it.

We'll also lose first pick in the PSD if we win as well as lose our priority pick. A respectable 3.5 quarter performance will do me this week. We can't do much about what Carlton and Melbourne do on Sunday but we can control our own destiny as far maintaining the picks we have.

I beg to differ, AFL fans don't often have great memory when it comes to spoons. In 10 years they will only remember who won the spoon within the last couple of years

The obvious one is Brisbane. Spooners in 98 to Triple-time premiers in 2001-3 although they played finals 3 years in a row before 98 and it was mass injuries that caused them to finish last in 98.

Winning the spoon no longer has the stigma it use to have. What use to be "you're crap" is now "good list management"  :whistle

Andrew Thompson's and possibly Robert Harvey's (?) last game. The Saints could still want to win badly to give them a winning send off. At least we won't have to put up with cocky Saint supporters if they do win today.

This is now a danger game ......................................... of us winning  ;D

was at the game last night HT74 the skunks started leaving from behind the goals 15 minutes into the last quarter they are terrible supporters throwing plastic bottles onto the ground after what they thought was a bad umpiring decision when a skunk player kick the ball out of bounds it was paid as delibrate & crows scored a goal from the play then they stated leaving  :rollin Joffa was very quite

Yeah saw the decision on TV and I agreed with it. Wakelin had no other intention but to get it over the line from 15 m in the field of play. Its not as if a player has been deemed to have kicked a goal when the ball is 2 metres in front of him and the goal umpire is starstruck by that player running towards him. Now that was game changing and disheartening.
As for their attitude Pies fans have always had a poor approach. Never stay to the bitter end. After all I remember 3 weeks ago when we beat them they were on their way 12 mins into the final quarter after Pets goal and with them its never their team is just crap. Its umpires its anything but their crap side. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
