Miller says Tigers have raw talent
05 January 2008 Herald Sun
Damian Barrett
RICHMOND football director Greg Miller sees North Melbourne of the early 1990s when he casts his well-trained eye over Richmond of 2008.
While conceding there is no Wayne Carey on the Richmond list, Miller, who put together North Melbourne's 1996 and 1999 premiership teams, said the general talent levels were comparable.
"I have been in footy a long time and I think this group is as talented as the early '90s at the Kangaroos, there is no doubt about it," Miller said yesterday as he watched Richmond players resume training after the Christmas break. "And certainly with more depth.
"It might not have a Wayne Carey, but it's got plenty of Wayne Schwasses and even a couple of Glenn Archer-types.
"And Geelong showed you don't need a Carey. Geelong showed if you have plenty of depth across all lines, which we are developing, you don't have to have a Carey."
Miller said an encouraging pre-season combined with a solid final four matches of the 2007 season gave the club strong hope it would climb the ladder this year.
The Tigers finished last season with the wooden spoon and just three wins and a draw. But two of those victories came in Rounds 19-22, against eventual preliminary finalist Collingwood and Essendon, along with brave losses to West Coast and St Kilda.
"The last four games of last year was exciting for our members to see and was indicative of what we can expect to see this year," Miller said.
"(Coach) Terry (Wallace), unashamedly, the day he arrived at the club, said this unit needed to have the same model as the Geelong Football Club, in terms of building a side.
"He said it required patience, and for people at the top of the footy club sticking together, and that is what we have done.
"We've assembled a great bunch of quality young men."
Serious injury setbacks to key players have hindered the Tigers' progress in the past two years, but most important players are expected to be ready by Round 1.
"I think with what some of the guys have been through in the past couple of years - Nathan Brown, Chris Newman, Mark Coughlan and Troy Simmonds - will actually help our leadership," Miller said.
"They've missed so much footy and been through some hard times that they appreciate every opportunity they get now, and in some ways, I think they will be better for it in terms of what they can offer not just in their football but their leadership.
"They are hungry to get back out there."

i think miller should just keep his mouth shut.
Stay quiet like every other team and let the players do the talking.
I dont hear any other team official saying comments like that or we are modelling ourselves like geelong.
-
5-6 years ago, i'd have read this and gotten excited...
Now I just read this and cringe. Until I see some improvement on the ground I don't take any notice of articles like this anymore. It's just more ammo for non-Richmond supporters to use on us.
-
hes trying to flog memberships and good on him. personally i think we are going to finish bottom again and we will look stupid but 3 or 4 years from now we will have the last laugh.

I think that we have been much quieter re: PR bulls**t this year than in past years. All clubs do it - they have to as part of membership marketing so you will never be able to get rid of it. You don't see/hear the other teams because you are not listening or looking for it. Trust me, its out there just as much (or more) as ours. Funny thing re: modelling on other clubs - when Brian Cook went to the basket case that was Geelong he made a statement that he was going to follow/build based on the West Coast model. Worked quite spectacularly for them I think. FWIW I think Millers article was more of an observation and has a fair bit potential truth. The real truth can only be known in hindsight.
-
Wayne Schwass was traded by North to Sydney for Shannon Grant Greg lol :wallywink.
Ramps is right in saying Miller is just trying to flog preseason fluff to sell memberships. I just wish we leave the out comments like our list has "got even a couple of Glenn Archer-types" ??? and comparisons to a side from 15 years ago when footy was played differently :-\.
-
this is why we look silly ... comments like this ...
-
u dont flood me with ur defence of miller comments but he looks like a tool with articles.
You may say other teams are flooging themselves well i rarely hear teams say we have archer type players and all this crap. Its a load of crap and i aint laughing.
Im sick of all the crap and talk that we dish out year in year out. The only way to shut people up is to show it on the field, Run, chase, tackle not this talk talk talk which results in more spoons..
all this talk is well to be honest embarassing

A simple response to a reporter enhancing ever so slightly the key point of the TW and GM plan of building a core team of like minded and similar aged players (very similar to Geelong and what Pagan and the Roo's did 15 years ago) and for some we're talking too much.
GM has been espousing the same point of building a core team for 4 yeras now and all of a sudden it's spin.
I don't understand what some of you wnat from the club.

what do i want. finals my friend nothing more nothing less.
ive been a paid up member for god knows how many years and i think i have the right to speak my mind when it comes to richmond like yourself and every one else that is a member.
dont talk to me about re building when u pick up KK instead of a rookie and draft in mcmahon when we had a shot at some descent. Mcmahon may turn out to be a good pick but i just wonder i really do if GM and Tw knew that the likes of Selwood would still be available at pick 18, if they would still have chosen Mcmahon....I think not!!

Lost me mate. I talk about building not re-building. I have no idea what the recruiting of McMahon and an implied criticism of GM and TW has to do with GM commenting that we are building a core team similar to what Geelong and North Melbourne did and the way this was presented (and this has been consistent) that this is the plan that TW put to the board when hired.

I'm not expecting finals yet :o but basically all Greg needed to say was what you've just said there HKT.
There's no need for comparisons to past champion and premiership players as that just sounds silly coming from a wooden spoon club and list. Virtually every premiership team over the past 15 years has had a Brownlow medallist playing for them. They may have not had a Carey but they have had champions star for them for years in Hird, Judd, Cousins, Goodes, Wanganeen, Jonathan Brown and the fab 4 at Brissy, Ablett junior, Macleod, Riccuito, Greg Williams, etc...
Our on-field actions and results will speaker louder than saying we have Archer-types already on our list. Statements like that come back to bite the club on the bum. We all know where we are at and what the club is doing as far a building a core effectively from scratch since the 2004 draft.

get another comeback Jack,ffs.

personally i would rather hear nothing from miller and co and just put the runs on the board instead.
comparing players is embarrassing to hear to be honest. maybe in a year or 2 we can start with things like that but right now i dont want to hear that

FFS its close to the truth.
The article in the paper was utter crap!
Sucked another 5,000 supporters in.

if anyone in the whole world has the cred to compare the north melbourne era with our young group its Miller.
he's the one who would know more than anyone else about the subject.
he's the one who was there.
he's the one that was part of it.
he's the one who made a major contribution to building that side.
i ask all you internet experts, who else would be more qualified to do the comparison?
fluffy articles are what this time of year is all about. not the first of the year and it wont be the last either.
those who have seen many preseasons come n go know its par for the course. there's no secret about the marketing angles, its as straight forward marketing as you can get. why get worked up over a preseason fluffy blurb?

so miller said what he said to save himself from getting the sack??? must be really scared about his position when his defence is a casual comparison with his former club. sounds like he's really shakin in his boots ::)
how do you know it sucked in 5000 supporters or is that just a wild stab in the dark???
what planet are you from???

not a planet, just a star. A jackstar, or a shooting (his mouth off)star. He's been spouting his bitter and repetitive monologues for what seems like an eternity.

well ... what ever miller said ...
i can't see the similarities between North 90's and us ...
so differently trying something for the club ...
at least he is trying something i guess ...

Ask the people who were at North during Millers time, sent the place to the wall, why do you think they are in such a bad way.

Good luck with you back to back spoons sunshine.
If you think Miller is the savior, think again ::)

Hey Blx,
Its a nice little speel to sell memberships,
At the end of the day, we havent the cattle and have continually recruited poorly. As for what planet I am from ?, I am from the world of REALITY not dreamworld like most of you are here

READ : 2 Premierships while Miller was there. If thats sending a club to the wall then gimme that anyday.
North have always teetered on the edge even during their previous heyday period during the mid 70's but you simply cant ignore 2 PREMIERSHIPS.

correct, it is "a nice little speel to sell memberships", wow, your becoming quite good at this.
now compare the wooden spoon list of '04 to the current wooden spoon list. Does that equate to us continually recruiting poorly?
LMAO at your tanty rants, very entertaining at least :thumbsup

Right on queue ;D
That is very funny
Dare I sat it ....
:thatsgold
It's the pre-season - it's a typical AFL pre-season article. Who cares ??? What do you expect them to say "well we are aiming for another spoon". January and Early Feb = Positive spin. Unlike another sashed team at least he isn't predicting premeierships within 3 years :whistle :lol ;D :thumbsup
I thought the photos were funny - some blokes seemed more than stuffed :rollin

True blx it's a preseason fluff piece but North in the early 90's was a different era. Many of that North group had already played together as juniors in successful North U19 premiership sides under Pagan (we were their main U19 rivals btw but it never equated to success for us at senior level like it did at North). North also had the luxury in the early 90's of a larger and stronger albeit underachieving senior core for their youngsters to develop around and won more games than they loss in every year of the 90's bar 1992. I guess one thing we can take heart in is that North side also got pumped by 150 points at one stage as did the baby bombers. Pagan took control of his former joeys from sacked Schimma after that humiliating loss, a 21 year old Carey was made captain and they made the finals and never looked back. Grant Thomas was also made chairman of North's match committee.
One reason supporters get irate is because they remember these fluff pieces and promises. Such as the one where Miller said prior to 2005 that we would be challenging by 2007 :-\. Some supporters might have a peanut for a brain but they have the memory of an elephant lol ;). True the positive from these comments is it gets the RFC publicity and media attention and gets everyone talking about us; the negative though is these silly comments eventually get chucked back in our faces at the end of the year.
-
Ask the people who were at North during Millers time, sent the place to the wall, why do you think they are in such a bad way.
Because they have always run on the smell of an oily rag and their "supporters" don't turn up to even finals. Only 26,000 to a home final is pathetic.

2 words - wayne carey
and miller says we dont have a carey :rollin
miller is always going to pump up our list above realistic proportions because he has been in charge of it for 5 years, hardly going to tell the truth is he?

cmon now blx thats just talking way too much sense for some on here, North have been a financial basket case for donkeys years and everyone damn well knows it.
-
Yep at the end of 92 North, like Fitzroy, couldn't afford to pay their players. Even 60 years ago they were financially in trouble according to their older supporters. Miller wasn't the Roos' CEO until the late 90's.
-
Shaw and Connolly got stuck into Miller over his "Glen Archer-type" comments. They even couldn't stop laughing repeating them. Oh well at least the RFC is getting publicity.
By the way Rohan surprise surprise sees the bombers making the top 8 and highly rates their youngsters :rollin.
-
Shaw is a feral zombie maggot! I'm sure he reads and posts on big fruity it would suit his style. Revenge will be sweet. :clapping I will personally rub his nose in it on radio when we smash them this year.
What a super star midfield they have.
Thomas
O'Brien
Burns
Holland
Muppet show! :lol

agreed shaw is a tosser but as much as i cant stand the pies i couldnt give a toss if we dont beat them this year.
its the blues i want to beat in round 1. ooh my god how much do i want to beat them
-
If we are destined to be near the bottom this year as many of us expect then so be it I accept it for another year and reap the fruits to fill the gaps in our list with priority picks from the super draft come November, but I am with you Daniel161 beating Carlscum in round 1 and following that up in our Centennary Game against the Cheating Scum in Round 14 is mandatory. I hate them so so so much I wish eternal misery and failure on them. Collingwood in round 3 is mandatory also but the eternal misery and failure part writes itself doesn't need me to promote it because after all it is Collingscum.
-
i have all this anger and frustration against that team and it doesnt help that every week you hear your brother on sen gloating about judd and co.
man i hope we beat those cheating pricks
