Right leg injury. Game stopped while he was carried off on a stretcher.
-
There goes his trade value.

Mail is "'done his knee""

There goes his trade value.
didnt have much to begin with. nevertheless its a shame for him personally. no one ever likes to see any player go down injured with a knee.
-
Still assessing but it appears to be his knee.
-
unlucky for Petts, wish him the best in recovery
-
Looks like an ACL for Petts.

Looks like an ACL for Petts.
That's what they said on Channel 7 news this evening
-
Its a shame it ended like this for him.
As much as i wanted him out of Punt road its not good when it happens like that..
-
That's a massive hit on his career. Bad luck Petts. :-[
Just out of interest when does his contract expire?

Yep Petts is out of contract although IIRC there was some clause if a player cops a long-term injury that extends beyond their current contract in terms of rehab and all.
You don't want any footballer to end his career this way. The same thing happened to Hilton.
-
Was thinking the same thing. Sad for Kayne that he's done his knee but it may ensure he's at Richmond next year.

The same thing happened with Hilton and Rodan didn't it? Rory did his knee in 2004 but wasn't delisted until the end of 2005. Rodan did his knee in the 2005 preseason and was delisted at the end of 2006. Then again Rodan may have been contracted and we may have paid him out. I can't remember.

Knee blow ends year for Pettifer
Michael Gleeson and Michael Sharkie | July 21, 2008
RICHMOND forward Kayne Pettifer's career has been thrown into doubt after receiving a severe knee injury yesterday that is likely to require a full reconstruction.
Pettifer is understood to have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the VFL during Coburg's game against Williamstown.
Tests early in the week are expected to confirm the initial diagnosis.
The 26-year-old flanker, who is believed to be out of contract at the end of the year, has been out of the Richmond side since round 11.
He was taken at pick nine in the 2000 national draft and has played 109 games for 129 goals, but has struggled to achieve the potential he has shown in some matches.
Pettifer has played just six AFL games this year — the first three of the season before being dropped and three more games from round nine before again being axed.

Pretty sure we paid Rodan out. Had 1 year left.

I'm not sure if its an extension of contract. I think it's that is someone suffers an injury that ends their career the compensation payout is about the same as an additional 12 months on their contract. This means that many clubs will keep them on their list as they are paying for them anyway, but I don't think we have room to make that choice and will most likely just pay him out.

yeah your right ,but it has to be a career ending injury .
he will recieve 1 year of rehab payed by the club.
and his payout is judged by how many years hes played, and how many years he had left.
but alot of players managers have a figure anyway, and put that into the contract.
l doubt if this will end his afl career ,hes not really that old and some club may want him.

News is bad for Pettifer
Herald-Sun 22 Jul 2008, Page 99
KAYNE Pettifer will miss the rest of the season after news yesterday that he needed a knee reconstruction.
The Richmond forward suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament playing for the Tigers' VFL affiliate Coburg on Sunday.
-
Sad for Petts to injure his knee at this time of year, but this could also spark him knowing his got alot of hard work in rehab ahead. His got great mates who have been through the same thing to support him.
This might just give him the drive required to ressurect his playing career l know his football has been down but l wish him all the best in his recovery :thumbsup you can do it ;D This could be a lucky injury for him which may save his career.

Scans yesterday confirmed Kayne Pettifer ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing with Coburg against Williamstown on Sunday.
After consultation with surgeon Julian Feller, Kayne will undergo a knee reconstruction later this week.
Scans determined that only the ACL was affected and no other damage was done to the knee.
Kayne will miss the remainder of the 2008 season.

No promises for Pettifer
22/07/2008 2:25:38 PM
Angus Morgan
Sportal
Snippet from Sportal
Wallace said: "We’ve said to Kayne we'll let him know where he stands sooner rather than later and we think that's the only fair thing, but I'm confident we’ll be able to work out something with him."
"He basically hasn’t had his body right since day one, and sometimes you just go through those sorts of years," Wallace said.
"He's had back-related hamstrings … and you start not getting on the track on a regular basis and that starts impacting on how you play your footy."
"It all mounts up when you're not getting continuity and that's been his lot this year."

-
Maybe they'll pay him to play at Coburg while he rehabs and then look to redraft him if he proves himself in the 2010 PSD.
-
we should try and rehab him as best we can then shove him out that door quick smart.
we dont need selfish footballers like him at our club

When it rains.....
Really feel for the kid, no matter what you think of Petts, this has been a horror year. If you were in his shoes, right now life would seem pretty unfair.

no one deserves that to happen to them.
but look at cogs and see how determined he is.
from what i hear Petts absoltely hates TW and cant wait to get out of Punt road, as does Rainesy..

They both got injured playing for the club the club can look after them
-
Delist.
-
Jon Ralph on Ch 10's 5th quarter last night reckoned Petts will remain at Richmond next year :o.
-
Good luck to the bloke for looking like getting a new one year contract but I have on e question?
Why?
What do have to gain from keeping him, other than to look after him but the club is bigger than the individual.
Would anyone offer a 4th round draft pick? If so take it...
-
how many times a player been told weeks before he gets shafted that his a required player.
-
What do have to gain from keeping him
Nothing.
Infact, it will hurt the development of Collins, Collard, Gourdis types.
-
He will be offered another year as insurance....but I think this is a mistake. He should be traded or delisted. Petts is a mid-sized forward who plays tall. He very rarely stays down and crumbs and has struggled to find the ball of late. He is a great finisher but I think he is just a average player and we can't afford to have average players in our team any longer.
Sorry Petts that's my opinion but I'm sure you will be kept for another year
Stripes
-
You've got to wonder if this is a financial decision as well as a long-term injury condition on an AFL contract if he does stay. We'll be paying for his rehab so give him one more year on base salary. It's harsh to finish your footy career like he has with an ACL but I still don't see the point of keeping him on the list otherwise. Doing a knee this late in the season will write off most of 2009 anyway so he'll just be taking up a spot on our list. Even if we keep Collard as a rookie only to promote him at the start of the year with Petts on the long-term injury list we're still then one rookie less than we could have had.
-
He will be offered another year as insurance...
I don't understand.
Insurance for what? In case we require some run of the mill 28 year old soft forward flankers?
-

I agree 100%. If we are to move forward it MUST be without this guy.
Help him through with costs of rehab, yes!! but to keep him on the list is a big NO.
There are others who deserve that spot and he has got to go.
perhaps this talk of another contract is really just a smokescreen to hide our intention to offload him. hope so
-
l think the only reason we would keep him is because he has very little currency at the moment.
and it wouldnt look good if we let him go for nothing and he went on to be a good player at another club.
-
I hate to think who we will cut at the end of the year if guys like Petts & Johnson are staying on the list. At least Bowden only takes up a spot on the veterans list, but otherwise we're going to have to start cutting kids.

yes l know what your saying .
l think meyer hyde tivendale and maybe even jackson could face the axe .
raines and jon and maybe patto for trading.

100 % correct guys
raines might be worth trading. id say clubs would offer a second rounder for sure.
-
Meyer I'd be very surprised to see go after his recovery from injury, they'll want to give him a proper go
Jackson may get cut, but I think we'd rookie him if we did
Raines will get held onto until the Gold Coast side comes in
JON isn't going anywhere, seriously people understand this
Patto doesn't have a chance of going either, we don't have a replacement for him
-
there was a small article in yesterday's (Sundays) HUN saying Petts was going to get offered a new contract... Petts did all the talking... said he wanted to stay, loved the club, was in the leadership group now and wanted to be part of the exciting times ahead
Most staggering thing in the article was the suggestion he was on around $300k a year on this current contract
-
Not surprising that he's on that much
250-300k is the average salary in the AFL these days when you take out kids in their first 2 years on fixed contracts
Petts is in the leadership group and has even been Top 5 in the B&F

Anyone know what's wrong with Petts arm?
The news showed him with his right arm in a sling next to Polly.

Can someone "Anyone" please explain to me in any way whatsover htf is this a benefit to the club.
I am just totally dumbfounded by this decision.
All I can think of is putting him on long term injury promoting a rookie and when he is right at the end of next year we may just get something for him, instead of the zero we would get now.
Really Really confused ???
-
Hard to understand the reasoning really. Perhaps the contract is a ruse to give him more value when they attempt to trade him....? ??? The only other reasons I can think for this contract is for insurance, to reward loyalty and/or for team morale, none of which I feel is an acceptable reason.

i think, but dont quote me, that if a player has had a season ending serious injury like a knee, he cannot be sacked or delisted and must be given an extra yr, eg rodan. gave him the yr then got rid of him
-
It's not that he CAN'T be delisted, just have a look at Courtney Johns.
What it is, is that you have to pay for the rehab of a workplace injury, which in the case of a knee is almost a 12 month rehab.
This basically means that you're paying for them anyway, so why not keep them on the list
It's a money thing
-
I wouldnt think Petts has been offered that much money and it would be a low base with extras if he plays seniors and plays well etc.
-
just delist Kayne Pettifer. pay for his recovery. just as long as he isn't on the list in 2009!
-
I heard today that no new contract has been offered to Petts at this stage so that rumour about him getting a one-year deal is false.

Only repeating what was said (and here's the obligoratory wink ;) )
Petts has also had an op on his shoulder hence him wearing a sling. His girlfriend now has to drive him around to the club and doctors with his bunged up knee and shoulder.
-

I hardly see how the player in question is ever going to be a reliable source on this subject. What was said could have easily been interpreted in certain ways. Seems like Chinese whispers what was actually said.

Another BF rumour
Heard a rumour today that Pettifers knee is worse than first thought and he has had to undergo a second operation. The same person also told me that it is likely that Petts will be added to the delistings by Friday.

Excuse my ignorance but why would we delist him now, haven't we already made the changes to our list required for the drafts.

There's still another list lodgement date prior to the PSD I think
-
There's still another list lodgement date prior to the PSD I think
I am not big on the drafts working Infamy, but are you saying that if we want a pick in the PSD we still have to reduce our list by one more. If our pick is at eight and I think I heard the PSD is a small list lacking in quality I cant see the point.
Oh No Not Jeff White!!, although for a broken down Pettifer if he is Kaput???

There's still another two more list lodgement dates. The 2nd one on Nov 14 before the National draft and the 3rd and final one on Dec 3 before the PSD and rookie draft.
Tuesday, November 11 (2pm) -- Uncontracted listed players nominate.
Wednesday, November 12 (2pm) -- Draft nominations close.
Friday, November 14 (2pm) -- List Lodgement 2.
Wednesday, November 19 (2pm) -- Delisted players nominate.
Saturday, November 29 (10am) -- 2008 NAB AFL NATIONAL DRAFT selection meeting (Telstra Dome).
Tuesday, December 2 (10am) -- Nomination of scholarship-listed player and international scholarship-listed player to rookie list.
Tuesday, December 2 (10am) -- Nomination of an international player and a player not registered for three years.
Tuesday, December 2 (2pm) -- Uncontracted listed players nominate.
Wednesday, December 3 (3pm) -- List Lodgement 3 and TPP Estimates.
Tuesday, December 9 (2pm) -- Delisted players nominate.
Tuesday, December 16 (10am) -- 2008 NAB AFL PRE-SEASON DRAFT selection meeting
Tuesday, December 16 (10.15am) -- Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans nominate eligible rookie list players.
Tuesday, December 16 (10.15am) -- Nomination of third-year rookies.
Tuesday, December 16 (10.30am) -- 2008 NAB AFL ROOKIE DRAFT selection meeting.
Right now we have 4 available spots on our Senior list to fill meaning we can use all 4 picks (8, 26, 58, 70) in the National draft OR 3 picks in the National draft (8, 26, 58) and 1 pick in the PSD (pick 8). Offloading another senior listed player would give us another National draft pick to play with (#81).
And yep we could select Jeff White in either the National or PS drafts if we wish to :help.
The thing that makes me dispute this rumour is why would we delist Petts in a week of no list lodgements. It would make more sense to delist him last Friday or Friday week on Nov 14.
-
Thanks for the info MT.
In regards to Petts I suppose he would have to be told before Nov14 although nine days plus would probably be too much advance notice.
Just another question if I may why are Brisbane and Sydney singled out on Dec 16th for nominating elgibile rookie list players
Thanks Chuck

Yes, but he was selected prior to the rookie draft due to the special advantages given to Sydney and Brisbane, so we couldn't rookie him.

That's what I thought too but I can't remember if they just tacked on special rookies at the end of the rookie draft so GB could be right. On the AFL site they had Jack taken with pick 57. We passed at picks 48 and 56 (it wasn't compulsory back then to have a full rookie list).

Sydney and Brisbane got their local rookies with their last picks prior to the PSD & Rookie Draft.
Sydney had the last 4 picks in that rookie draft - 57 (Jack), 58, 59 & 60.
All 4 were NSW or ACT residents.
It's a bit confusing but there is/was a rule which points to Jack not being a concessional rookie.
"If a club based in the Sydney or Brisbane metropolitan area includes more than three players on its Rookie List under this rule, it shall forfeit its last and each previous draft selection at the NAB AFL Rookie Draft."
Sydney picked up 8 rookies using all of their picks, so only the last 3 would be concessional.
My head hurts and my Sydney care factor just dropped below zero.

Pettifer is 3-0 in pro boxing. Robinson hasnt boxed but I always saw him as a faux tough guy in the AFL so reckon Pettifer will knock the poo out of him.
Not sure about Browny. More a lover than a fighter. Hopefully he's a late withdrawal for Marlion

Kayne got absolutely pulverised by the 8 years younger Robinson.
Thankfully Brownie belted Cornhead's face a fair bit even though Brownie is 5yr his senior.

Was always a genuine tough nut IMO, just didn't like his cockiness, but when he left the Blues I was keen to trade him into RFC personally haha.
