Good luck to the bloke for looking like getting a new one year contract but I have on e question?
Why?
What do have to gain from keeping him, other than to look after him but the club is bigger than the individual.
Would anyone offer a 4th round draft pick? If so take it...

Nothing.

Infact, it will hurt the development of Collins, Collard, Gourdis types.

He will be offered another year as insurance....but I think this is a mistake. He should be traded or delisted. Petts is a mid-sized forward who plays tall. He very rarely stays down and crumbs and has struggled to find the ball of late. He is a great finisher but I think he is just a average player and we can't afford to have average players in our team any longer.

Sorry Petts that's my opinion but I'm sure you will be kept for another year

You've got to wonder if this is a financial decision as well as a long-term injury condition on an AFL contract if he does stay. We'll be paying for his rehab so give him one more year on base salary. It's harsh to finish your footy career like he has with an ACL but I still don't see the point of keeping him on the list otherwise. Doing a knee this late in the season will write off most of 2009 anyway so he'll just be taking up a spot on our list. Even if we keep Collard as a rookie only to promote him at the start of the year with Petts on the long-term injury list we're still then one rookie less than we could have had.

He will be offered another year as insurance...

I don't understand.

Insurance for what? In case we require some run of the mill 28 year old soft forward flankers?

I agree 100%. If we are to move forward it MUST be without this guy.
Help him through with costs of rehab, yes!! but to keep him on the list is a big NO.

There are others who deserve that spot and he has got to go.

perhaps this talk of another contract is really just a smokescreen to hide our intention to offload him. hope so

l think the only reason we would keep him is because he has very little currency at the moment.
and it wouldnt look good if we let him go for nothing and he went on to be a good player at another club.

I hate to think who we will cut at the end of the year if guys like Petts & Johnson are staying on the list. At least Bowden only takes up a spot on the veterans list, but otherwise we're going to have to start cutting kids.

100 % correct guys

raines might be worth trading. id say clubs would offer a second rounder for sure.

Meyer I'd be very surprised to see go after his recovery from injury, they'll want to give him a proper go
Jackson may get cut, but I think we'd rookie him if we did
Raines will get held onto until the Gold Coast side comes in
JON isn't going anywhere, seriously people understand this
Patto doesn't have a chance of going either, we don't have a replacement for him
