Wallace weighs up wide-open eight

AS HENRY Ford once said: "History is more or less bunk".
A couple of months ago, the 2008 AFL season was declared dead and buried in relation to the eight. That was it -- history showed that the teams qualifying for the finals were not going to change.
But the season has continued to throw up all sorts of twists and turns, and with five weeks left, the top three teams are pretty much the only sides that are safe.
As a result, Richmond in 10th is just half a game out of the eight.
Coach Terry Wallace isn't getting too excited at this point – especially given his side has uber-team Geelong to face on Saturday night – but is happy to be still in the mix.
"It flips and varies in a lot of mysterious ways, doesn't it?" he pondered. "What it's done is it's just set up the competition for a fantastic finish to the year.
"As we all do, you have a sneaky look to see who's playing who, and work out your permutations and combinations, and you can't work out anything, because nearly every week there's three games that impact the bottom part of the eight significantly.
"There can be movement, I reckon now, there can be movement anywhere from fourth downwards to those that are still involved.
"So that's opened it up a fair bit."
The closeness of the competition meant Wallace was unable to say how many more games his side needs to win to see September action, citing the old classic – 'eight-point games' – as a major reason.
"I don't know. I don't know the answers to that. To be honest, I think it would matter which wins, because if you're playing other sides in similar scenarios to yourself, if you win those type of games, well, that's one less that they can win.
"At the very least we would say that we would need three victories from this stage onwards, if we wanted to play finals footy.
"I think that's at the very least."

Carlton and Us play Adelaide in Adelaide.
If Carlton win this weekend which I have a suspicion they may we have to also, if we dont have to in the first place anyway.
Because no matter how far we have come we are still a long way behind the cats and not quite as far but close enough behind the hawks and would need everything including barometric pressure on our side to beat those teams.
Don't say we cant but would only say a 1 in 5 chance ......
With a young team, still capable of putting ourselves in a good possy then dropping one to freo or melbourne in the last 2 :shh
Just keep this up people :pray real hard
-
the tigers are coming! have a gut feeling about tomorrow, but reg the result , i believe we will beat the crows and hawks

Don't say that lol. I was hoping if it did come down to the last game we could erase the demons (excuse the pun) from round 22 10 years ago.

I hope your gut feeling is right. I don't feel so positive.

if geelong were smart they would give us a hand at winning. the only team they fear at finls time is collingwood. a tiger win will knock the pies out of finals contention.
something tells me the planets are aligning. its tiger time
-
The Blues are on top of the Crows at the moment. A win puts them above us :chuck but I guess on the positive side it'll keep us still only half a game out even if we lose tonight. We can then jump above Adelaide next week if we beat them so destiny would be in our own hands. I hope the Crows kick as poorly at goal next week too as they are today.

But just not yet.

long way off, especially when the coach wants to play Jake King as a hit up forward :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
-
Riewoldt and Morton need to attack more.
-
Has to get rid of Schulz. Pathetic!
-
I actually think Schultz is better in defence that up forward.

i agree, and i must say i need to brush up on my astronomy, those planets were way offline lol

The results went as expected this weekend unlike last week which means we'll still alive. Next week against the Crows is our elimination final. Lose and the season is over; win and we're a show to sneak in. In fact if the Saints knock off the Pies and the Hawks beat Brisbane down in Tassie next week (both realistic results) we'll be in the Eight ;). It all comes down to next Sunday for the Tiges :gotigers.
-
Bad result the Saints winning (I think they won) but the pies and Lions losing was good for us...
Would be delightful if the pies missed out :whistle :thumbsup

Especially now lol. Hopefully this mess with Shaw and Didak makes them self-destruct in the last 4 weeks although they have a soft draw ::).
Having said that this week we just have to focus on winning ourselves otherwise what other teams do will be meaningless.
-
The Hawks have done the right thing by us flogging Brisbane. If the Saints can do the same now against the Pies then a win tomorrow with put us inside the Eight.

Didn't quite work out, I would like to see 2 things, either we win our next 4 games and seal the deal without relying on others to drop games or we win our 2 games in r21 and 22, finish around 11 or 12th and get one more really good go at a draft before making a proper move next year.
-
The Ramps ladder predictor now has us finishing in
10th position
this includes victories over Fremantle and Melbourne.
The good news is we will finish above Carlton who will finish 11th
The bad news is we will only have pick 7 in the national draft.

our season was lost when we defeated the dees.
a few pathetic and useless wins here or there means nothing.
the blues played it smart last year, hence picking up kruzer and judd.
The RFC on the other hand will end up where is has every year since 82 and that is nowhere. 10/11/8th spot who gives a stuff it counts for ZERO. Im only interested in finals not this rebuilding crap ive heard for he last 10 years.
If we manage to get 6th or 7th pick who cares because we will probabaly screw that up and pick up another tambling or mcmahon

Correct Daniel.
And then take into account that Richo won 3 games off his own boot, he saved Wallace the embrassment of being sacked mid year
-
Wallace proved today he cant coach, laughing when players make mistakes is the lowest.
Sooner his throat is cut the better for club & players.

Daniel and Jackstar are not the same person.
Just goes to show the IQ of some posters on here, ZERO

Freo is no gimme as they've won 3 of their last 4 and pushed the Swans but assuming we beat them and the Dees I have us finishing 9th if the Dogs rediscover their form and beat Brisbane this week. If the Blues beat North and Brisbane then we'll finish 10th.
