i dont think I could bare to watch that again :banghead...always knew it would be costly

Even if we had hung on against the Doggies we would have ended up with 48 points and still been out of the 8 on percentage.
The St Kilda game ultimately was the match that cost us a finals berth.

Despite losing that game, our style of play was fantastic. I remember both the Doggies and Saints game being a real sign that the team was capable of playing a high quality of football for much of the game.
Hopefully Cuz will be fit enough to have an impact if we are in that situation again next year.

We would've finished 5th and just % outside of the top 4 if we had won both games. Then again if we had lost the Port, Brisbane and second Bombers and Freo games we won narrowly we would've been bottom 4. It just shows how even the comp is between the middle of the road sides.
The Saints game hurts the most as it's a game we should have won in a canter let alone never lost. We creamed them at the stoppages but kept turning over the footy every two seconds :banghead and then Milne has a freaking day out in front of the sticks :banghead. At least the Dogs game we played well in a high standard game of footy. Both sides had chances to kill the game (Dogs in the first quarter and us in the last) so a draw was probably a fair result as much as it sucked to cough up a 19 point lead because we didn't know how to knock down the clock. Why oh why Jakey did you rush that point :P.

I have the entire 2008 season on DVD.
Have been watching games since the season ended; mainly the victories :P
Started watching the Bulldog game last night.
It is interesting watching games at the beginning of the season and how certain players were travelling and then seeing how much they'd improved by the end of the year. Great example is Shane Edwards :thumbsup

The Saints first 5 goals were directly from horrendous turnovers from us.

Who was it again that kicked sideways over the head of a teammate just inside the centre square and straight to Dal Santo who waltzed into goal :P.

Newy is number 17 so it must have been a look-a-like in 1 ;D
They've shown that St Kilda game. Kel's shot for goal still defies physics. It was going straight through for most of it (I was up ready to celebrate at the time) then it veered away at the last second :( :scream. Jack should've gone the torp although if the clock was right ::) and we weren't robbed of crucial seconds he could have easily passed it off to Jordie inside 50 IIRC.

11 goal second quarter avalanche coming up :thumbsup.
-
Well I have now put myself through the Bulldogs, Saints and Hawks games so guess what?
I now get the Eagles and Hawks return game (which I'll tape this week).
I've also taped the Bombers game which is a win but not quite as impressive.
-
We won by clever means and ticked off every Bombers fan in the process which made victory all the more sweeter. That has to be classed as a good win ;D :thumbsup.
-
Seven's new digital channel is going to show footy replays next week after it starts up on Saturday. The games are not just from 2009 but of games from the past as well.
It's really for nightowls or those on nightshift as the replays are going to be shown during the night (early morning).
Richmond is being shown on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Wed 1.30am - R16 2009: Richmond vs North Melbourne
Fri 1.30am - R17, 2001: Western Bulldogs vs Richmond

That bulldogs game will be worth re watching....From memory Brad Ottens was on fire that night.
Nathan Brown kicked 4 goals for the bulldogs.
Good game from happier times.
Does anyone know what time it will be on in Perth.....10:30 pm ?

Bump.
A replay of the draw with North is on at 1.30am on 7TWO.
-
Nathan Brown kicked 4 goals for the bulldogs.
And had his head ripped off in the dying seconds and didn't get a free kick! :lol
-
I watched the first half of the replay of the draw with North this morning. Even if I hadn't had to get to bed I wasn't going to watch the second half :P.
Watching it again it stood out like the proverbial that we really need to find a genuine big tall marking key forward. Jack does well but when he leads out up towards and outside 50 then we are left with no true tall forward to kick to. I think 5 times in the second quarter our mids kicked it on top of Nahas' head who had no chance of marking the ball. That day we were using Graham as a tall forward with Vickery in the ruck and Gus should stick to ruckwork. He's Postie played but apart from that gutsy mark he took inside 50 in the first quarter most of his marks were on the wing.
I had forgotten how well Vickery did against McIntosh in the ruck. He's agility enables him to become another mid for us one the ball hits the deck. Provided he stays injury free (touchwood) he's going to become a good player for us once he gets a few preseasons under his belt to build up his strength and to play out 4 quarters. Blingers and Edwards were on fire in that first half off half-back. If we had a decent tall forward structure to kick to with the amount of clearances we won we could have been at least 12 goals up. Still 7 goals up at half-time shouldn't end up in a drawn game unless you tank :-\.
Cogs and Silvester are the only ones gone from that game off the top of my head.
-
Tiges vs Doggies in 2001 on now :thumbsup.
-
First time I've seen that game in full as I was OS in 2001. Just a great game of footy to watch even now. Not always pretty (missing simple targets as usual lol) but a finals like pressure and close all night. To come from 16 points down midway through the last and kick 4 goals on end was gutsy. LOL @ Richo having a shocker all night and then turning the game our way when it counted. Sad we only saw Leon Cameron in Y&B towards the end of his career. An absolute gun. Browny was also on fire that night for the Doggies.
-
Well us in the country don't get that new channel's, and we don't get that channel 1 either.
I have not sat up to watch the channel 1 as I was told they only broadcast it to here very early morning's.
As far as I know it doesn't even reach Bendigo.
It is at this stage broadcasted in the cities area's, and I don't know if we will ever get them.
I know Geelong get it and that might be as far as it is broadcasted.
This is why we went out and got pay tv.
-
:banghead :banghead
Dam it....I had it in my head that the game was on tonight.I was looking forward to watching that game from 2001.
Mind you ...the cricket was quite exciting last night.

I'm sure Richo will stay up to watch both those games - NOT! The first one he got pinged for a garbage free in the last minute for shepherding Dunkley despite the ball going through half-post height and out of reach of Dunkley ::). Bloody ump robbed us of the winning goal :banghead. In the 2000 game Richo busted the inside of his foot and missed the rest of the season :(. Modra also kicked 7 on Gas and we lost by a point :P. Happy memories lol.
-
The Sydney game......we may of been a little unlucky in the end- but the fact was we blew a 21 pt lead at 3/4 time.
The Freo game....that was the game Nick Daffy was dropped for "discipline" problems.I believe the catch phrase of the time was "trying to create a culture of excellence".

A full replay of the 1980 GF is on early Sunday morning from 1am on 7TWO.

now that will be some balm for a wounded soul, and to be beating up on the mudpies no less.

We just got the new channel 1 which is 50 here, so we now are hoping to get the new 7TWO.
Talk about making us country people look behind the rest.
-
they should seriously show those matches earlier then 1-1:30am! just to late! Troy Simmonds playing for Melbourne this morning was funny to watch.
>:(
-
We won :D.
Footy hasn't really changed. If you're bigger, stronger, faster and better skilled as a unit you win games.
The bewildered look of Tony Shaw's face thoroughout the game is priceless. No wonder he still hates us :wallywink.

Weird bushy how they let you get ONE but not 7TWO ???. Do you have ABC2, SBS2 and 'GO' (Ch 9's digital channel)?
-
Got all the rest so far just not the new 7two channel.
And we are the so called Digital capital of Victoria and I think Australia to.
And that is according to the Comminications Minister.
We will be the first place that the analogue signal we be switched off at.
Reason why, we all had to go and buy a set top box to get channel 10, and thats a fact.
So it stinks that we have to wait, but these so called smart one know better than we do.

We are the opposite, We have 7two but not one or go. there is a signal transmitted on one but is just scenery shots with elevator music. :banghead
Watched and recorded the game last night. I think that may the first time i have watched it since that wonderful day 29 years ago. As an 11 year old I had no true appreciation of it at the time. I can see that getting a few more re runs if things start going per shaped next season.
Oh, it has some very rare footage too.... KB hand balled off for a goal assist :rollin

Dec 12 1.30am - 3.45am 2001 First Semi-Final Richmond vs Carlton
I've never seen this game in full as I was OS at the time. I just remember the bits I saw as a typical Frawley grinding win. The last hurrah of the 90s generation.
-
Worth staying up for.
-
I tried staying awake last week for the 1980 GF but, after a xmas party with just a couple of ale'si fell asleep.
So tonight i have set the alarm and auto tune and about to have a nanna nap. :sleep
NOT missing this one.

seriously consider asking santa for a PVR. I have a Beyonwiz and am as happy as a pig in poo with it. There are others about that are as good if not better i'm sure. I also have an Ice TV subscription, with which i have set up so any program that has richmond associated with it is automatically recorded.

I watched the 2001 SF on the weekend. I know they said on the commentary it was breezy that day but I don't think I've seen so many unforced turnovers in a final. No wonder both sides went into the wilderness for the rest of the decade :-\. The only thing you wished the current Tiges side had from that game was the desperation and hardness at the footy and the gang tackling. These days you would get reported for a number of those front on hits.
Looking back we should've buried Carlton in the first half if we could kick (nothing's changed :lol ) but after half-time we were very lucky to win. We were just able to kick crucial goals to stay just enough in front despite the Blues having all the play and kicking points.
A fair bit of comedy that day. Hilton playing for frees and conning the ump. Duncan's mongrel floater on the run that somehow countered the breeze and floated through lol. Bourkey coming off the bench for the first time in the game in the 3rd qtr and kicking the ball straight out on the full before being sent back to the bench by Spud :lol. Whitnall making Ben Holland look like Ulsain Bolt. Seeing a dud like Simon Fletcher run around in blue and then scratching your head as to why o why we recruited him :banghead.
On a serious note losing Benny Gale at the end of 2001 was a bigger loss than we realised in hindsight. He only retired because we couldn't afford to keep him on under the salary cap with Gas and Holland asking for big pay rises. It all unravelled from there :-\. Benny taking the No.1 ruck role and still being fairly mobile for a big guy in the middle of the ground allowed Ottens to play forward and dominate over the second opposition defender (Richo of course had the best defender on him).

Yep the last Fitzroy game in Melbourne in front of their supporters. A sad day for footy. I just remember us running out and doing the job fairly clinically (a bit of a understatement as we won by 25 goals) without getting caught up in the emotion. Richo kicked 7 and Benny 6. Our supporters were respectful at the end as well with the Fitzroy theme song playing after the game as the Roys did a farewell lap to say goodbye. I just remember thinking at the time about how lucky we were to see our Tiges rally and survive in 1990 with the SOS campaign. Fitzroy sadly didn't have the support base to save themselves and the AFL had no intention of stopping them from dying unlike now using tv rights to fund a drip for the Dees, North and the doggies.
-
Remember that game and it is one that I do remeber, by the wonderment of the family.
But I just wished we to had this channel.

I started watching this this morning and ended up watching the whole thing lol. I must have needed a footy fix. Sheesh talk about a tribute game to dudness both on the field and in the coaches' boxes with Walls, Geisch, Shaw and Spud :rollin. The weird thing was as poor as the skills were :P, it was a gripping game to watch even now with the scores close throughout, heaps of momentum swings, and some of the toughest and courageous footy you'll ever see. Definitely not pretty but just hard old school footy.
Gas, Duncan and Scotty Turner were amazing with their running with the flight of the ball spoils. Benny Gale saved out bacon in the last quarter playing a kick behind the play and marking everything in sight. Richo showed his best and worst. Kicked 5 but should have kicked 10 if he didn't hit the post from 10m out as well as run into an open goal and miss. It was his first year with a major case of the yips - playing on to avoid having a set shot. Not the only one whose confidence was shot under Walls by then. Bulluss fumbled the ball everytime he went near it including one foot out from our goal. Of the blasts from the past, Ben Moore played his one good game for Richmond that night while Trent Nichols kicked a couple of goals as well.
The winning goal if you remember this game was Cambo kicking quickly out of a pack with scores level and Richo outmarks Schauble 10m out, plays on and kicks the ball in one motion through for a goal as he is tackled. Classic Richo :lol. The big fella ended up with the 3 Brownlow votes for it.
-

I watched the last 40 minutes this morning. Another great game even now. Funny seeing Hardwick as a skinny kid. Tough, desperate footy and ruthless tackling. Naish copped a head-high shirtfront and Ian Robinson in the commentary box called it a good old fair hip-and-shoulder. Healy on the other said you can't hit players in the head. Nowdays Grenvold? would have got 4 weeks suspension. I reckon Scotty Turner kept that shirtfront in the memory bank for the SF lol.
On the game itself it looked like the Bombers would kick away early in the last thanks to Hird but we wrestled back the momentum and were finishing the stronger side (we had come back from 4 goals down early on). Bondy's crucial spoil on the wing that set up Maxfield's goal was fantastic. We should have really won in the end as we stuffed up a 3 on 1 contest on the wing with under 2 mins to go. The Bombers got a free which set up O'Connor's goal to draw the game.
Will give tonight's game a miss. All I remember of that Adelaide nightmare is Ch 7 had a clash in their tv schedule and the game or at least the first half wasn't shown. I remember seeing them flash a quarter time score update with us 50 points down :P and didn't bother to wait for the live second half coverage. Walls thankfully was sent on his bike after this game.

It looked like it was gunna be just another of Fawley's failures.
I actually remember this game and that is something for me to do that.
So now we need to get a game with Wallace's wipeouts.
This is what I will now be calling the games we played under these.
Spos we could also have Rawling's runovers.
This covers the last 3 no hopers as our coaches.
-
As Dermie said in the commentary that night you get full value as a Tigers supporter - you get to experience every footy emotion there is each and every week :-\ lol
We were very lucky to win that game. North won every centre clearance in the last quarter exposing the weakness in our midfield yet Spud reckoned we were only a couple of half-forwards off challenging ::). Richo's gamewinning goal with 3 mins to go was our first and only goal in the last 40 minutes. Daniel Motlop playing his first game then drops an absolute sitter when on his own at CHF with 30 secs to go. Thankfully Hawthorn lost so we jumped over them into the top 4.

Great game (well second half at least) to watch even now. 7 goals down in the second quarter with Kouta taking us to the cleaners and it looked like we'd be on the end of another Princes Park hiding. But we kept persisting and persisting playing tough albeit not so skillful footy and never gave up. The Blues were the walking wounded by the end with hardly anyone on the bench and they ran out of gas.
It was the last 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter that started the comeback - Harrison got a free and goaled, Daffy then crumbed and snapped another, and thanks to a great tackle by Funcke which almost knocked him out Rogers bursts through to kick another. Margin went from around 5 goals down to 8 points in just 2 minutes. Timed our run perfectly with Harro putting us finally in front with just 3 mins to go. The Blues made one last push forward but the siren went with the ball 40m out from their goal and their finals hopes dashed :thumbsup. Too bad "Unleash the Geisch" was wasted on 4 wins in the last 5 games tha year with no chance of finals ourselves.
Benny Gale handballing over Richo's head to score a point is still a classic blooper :lol. Duncan's kicking is not far behind either in the comedy stakes :help lol although he played a terrific defensive game on one-year wonder Brad Pierce. He, Knighter, Benny Gale and Gas were great that day.
-
I remember that day well. I was on my own in the Legends-in-Their Own Lunchbox stand, with 1,000's of cocky, loudmouthed Carlscum fans in full voice as they steamrolled their way towards a finals berth in the first half. Then they went suddenly quiet as I came to life in the 3rd quarter, and started giving it back to them.
Then I went home and discovered that another Blue blood had met her demise in a Paris tunnel.

Just tell them as pathetic as Richmond has been we've still won 5 times as many flags in the past 50 years as the choking Pies have. Malthouse's top-up recruiting for the next 2 years will also hurt them terribly just as our young list begins to mature.

He, Knighter, Benny Gale and Gas were great that day.
I wouldnt forget Bond? in that line up MT.
Ok he didnt get a huge amount of possys himself but he did nullify Bradley who used to hurt us quite a bit back then.

You're right Jacosh. Bondy did a great tagging job. Bradley from memory didn't get a kick until the 3rd quarter or something ridiculous like that and even then that was a free kick for OOTF.

Fox Sports is keeping people passionate about the pigskin ??? sane during the summer months with Chooseday Night Football of the AFL variety here for your viewing pleasure.
Fans are swamping polling stations - located at foxsports.com.au - to demand which classic match they want to relive.
Each week we will offer up three classic AFL matches, and by voting via foxsports.com.au by 11pm (EDT) Monday, January 18, you get to choose the match you most want to watch.
It sounds simple because it is. For this week's choices, we're offering you three crackers which will go to air on Tuesday, January 19, at 6pm on Fox Sports 2HD and Fox Sports 2. This week's selection will come from one of three pulsating clashes in which one side broke a hoodoo over their opponents. Read on and cast your vote.
Richmond v Adelaide, round eight, 2006
Some people called it basketball crap, others labelled it tactical genius. Whatever it was, Richmond's performance in Joel Bowden's 200th game for the Tigers had a tinge of car crash about it - try as you might, it was impossible to look away. The Crows were flying high after winning five matches on the trot and viewed as a premiership threat at this stage of the season. With Tyson Edwards and his midfield colleagues in rare touch you can see why.
Hawthorn v Essendon, round 20, 2005
Carlton v Brisbane Lions, round 21, 2008

I just finished watching the replay of the Tiger's skin-of-the-teeth victory against Freo in Perth. It was a real against-the-odds effort (for those who've forgotten), with less than a kick the difference in the dying seconds of a 33-minute quarter, the ball locked deep in Freo's forward line, 30,000 braying purple idiots and 3 home-town scumpire's against us.

Fantastic game with fantastic memories. The pure passion of the tiger army was seen at its best after the game, the theme song was sung over and over again after the game. A game I will never forget

For a smart talented player that would have to be the worst game Benny Gale has ever played.
Maybe it was the jubilation of the win but I had forgotten how bad not only him but the whole team played, they were lucky to scrape through with that win especially being 5 goals down at 1/2 time.

I turned on the tellie when I got home and it was on 7TWO during the second quarter when we were 16 points up. Saw Sartori fumble the ball in the wet and turned it straight off.
I watched most of the second half of the 95 SF last night though :thumbsup. I wouldn't say we played poorly Jacosh and were lucky to win. 8.10 - 2.3 after half-time with Essendon's 2 goals coming late in junk time was pretty much total domination by us. Not pretty football for sure but we just outworked the Bombers and were ruthless on any lose balls. As much as I hate to say it Collingwood play this style now. Compensating a lack of class across the whole side with hardwork and desperation till the final siren. Bomber players were coming off second best from our hits and they had hardly anyone on the bench to come on by the last quarter. Of course Scotty Turner's hit on O'Donnell in the 3rd quarter being the highlight ;D. Northey's positional changes after half-time worked a treat as well. Naish and Daffy were pushed further down into the middle of the ground and our midfield that was spanked in the second quarter clicked into gear with wave after wave of attacks.
We played our "GF" that day and had nothing left for the PF especially against our bogey side Geelong. I still believe if Freezer, Richo and Wigney hadn't copped serious injuries (Wigney came back but he never showed his first 9 rounds worth of form again) and we had finished on top of the ladder and avoided Geelong in the finals we would've been a big show for the flag in 1995.
-
Watched the last half of the '95 Semi. There were a lot of big hits that day. Dustin Fletcher came off second best in a clash with little Chris Bond, and Turner dished out a nice one to Grenvold, which was payback for Maxfield's broken jaw in the infamous drawn game earlier in the season.
Those two diving marks by Rogers which both resulted in goals late in the game were a treat. As was seeing the sadly departed Jamie "sticky" Tape in action again. Oh the memories. I can't believe it's already 15 years ago.

God,I remember this one. Richo raced in to kick the winning goal on the siren, only to have a Sydney player get between him and the goal, take a huge Swandive :lol and suck the scumpire into disallowing the goal. Needless to say, I exited Arctic Park in a blind fury. That same season we were ripped off at the death once again down at the Cattery, when Naish was ignored an obvious free at point blank range that would've sealed the win. If we had been on the correct blow of the whistle in those two games, Richmond would have achieved something they haven't managed for a long, long time - consecutive Finals series (95-96). Is it any wonder that I hate the men in white/fluorescent like I do?

Didn't Naishy get the free but he wasn't paid the 50m. His kick after the siren missed and we lost two games in a row by less than a kick :scream. Naishy wasn't the same after that either.
It was Dunkley who took the dive. Their first meeting since Dunkley pushed Richo into the SCG fence causing the big fella to do his kee :banghead. If you watch the replay Dunkley wasn't even watching the ball as Bondy's shot for goal went well over his head. Dunkley had his eyes on Richo coming towards him and as Richo got near him Dunkley was already falling backwards and then flung himself back conning the ump ::).
Here is the video - go to 2.00

Got to love Ronald Dale saying it was a definite free. I'm sure footy was that soft in your day Barass.

Dunkley milked it but Richo shouldn't have dropped the shoulder down when he went through. :'(

That may have been an earlier incident from the same game. I was at the litter tray that day, and the way I remember it, we were streaming into goal at the Geelong cheer squad end with seconds on the clock and less than a kick down. Naishy was in the box seat to take the mark at point-blank range, with his opponent caught behind him and wrong-footed. But the Geelong bloke basically grabbed Naishy by the scruff of the neck, and slung him aside to take pole position. The umps, pandering as always to the Sleepy Hollow crowd paid the mark, and I rode the train home a very unhappy boy. I'm pretty sure it was rd 3 1996 if you can hunt down the You Tube.
Time has a way of distorting these memories. Like for instance with the Dunkley free in rd 4, I'd forgotten that Richo was trying to shepherd Bondy's kick through rather than slotting it himself. Fact is he should've left it alone, as it probably would've sailed over Skunkley's head. Never give an umpire an excuse to screw us I say, particularly against the AFL's pets Sydney.

I couldn't find any youtube video of it.
I can't remember anything else from that game but Naishy had a shot after the siren from about 45m out to right of tv screen goal with the tv camera basically right behind him. Geelong's Brad Scholl showed good sportsmanship quietly coming over to Naishy after he missed to shake his hand and pat him on the back. Hard to forget kicks after the siren. Means I'm going to remember Jordie's kick 15 years from now :help ;D.
Was Naish being grabbed by the scruff of the neck just before that?

Yep not the only time Richo's freespiritness when playing the game was penalised by an umpire. I can't stand frees paid for technical yet incidental or inconsequential contact that has nothing to do with the actual play. The best games are ones let go by the umps where only blantant frees in the play are paid. Imagine an umpire pulling a free like that in a GF. Thankfully umps in recent GFs have put away the whistle.
-
Maybe the overlooked free to Naish was an incident earlier in the quarter then. All I know is we were ripped off two weeks in a row, and ultimately it cost us a finals series. Because in rd22 we found ourselves in a situation where we had to beat a rampant (and eventual Premier) Nth Melbourne to make the eight and were duly smashed.

Yep while Hawthorn who we had beaten easily twice that year only had to beat bottom placed Melbourne in R22 in their 'merger' game. Dunstall from memory got the Hawks home by just one point. We lost narrowly too many games we should have won that year (we actually had a high percentage). We choked after half-time against Essendon and from memory we lost both to Brisbane and West Coast in Melbourne. The Brisbane game was at Princess Park so hardly home ground advantage ::).

We were two points up at 3qt time and North kicked 9 goals in the last quarter and there our season was gone in the last 30 minutes of the last home and away game. McKernan kicked the last two of the 3rd quarter to keep the Characterless Club alive just as the momentum was ours. They carried that into the last quarter and by the 10 minute mark of the last quarter I could hear the Hawk fans tooting their horns proudly and passionately with Don Scott on Glenferrie road as the 3 north fans at the ground were saying nothing and us Tiger fans were stunned.
Here are my differences as to why we failed to make the 8.
Rd 4 1996 we lose to Sydney by a point in a game transferred to Waverley from MCG for AFL centenary celebrations. Hawks 27 points down in bog at Whiteen Oval with 6 mins to go scramble a draw and shouldve won when Pritchard missed to tie the scores from 5 meters out.
Rd 5 1996 We lose to the Cats by 3 points with Naish missing after the siren. In rd 14 Hawthorn won at the Cattery by 2 points with Tony Woods kicking the winner that bounced 4 or 5 times in the slop and went through.
In successive weeks we lose to Freo in Perth by 54 points. The next week Hawthorn win by 57 points against Freo in Perth.
Carlton invincibility diminshes from half way through 96 we lose unluckily by 11 points to them after Heaver touches the ball twice all afternoon to kick the goal that put the Filth in front and set up Williams from a Benny Gale clanger.Hawthorn beat them by 49 points a few weeks later.
We lost 6 games under 3 goals where we had real chances to win in all. We won no close games decided by less than 3 goals. Our smallest win was in rd 3 at the Gabba were we held off a fast finishing Brissy by 18 points after we were about 6 goals up at half time thanks to Bondy having a blinder.
Hawthorn won 4 games under 2 goals and snatched a draw. No losses under 3 goals.
We had a % of about 117.Top 3 in the league. Hawthorn made the eight with a % of well under 100. People might say we played Fitzroy twice but so did Brissy and Nth who finished top 4 that season and Hawthorn who also made the 8.
In 1994 and 1995 we won most of the close ones that supplemented our ladder position as we had much lower percentages.
1996 was such an even season. With some luck we could have finished top 4. We played some of the best footy I have seen us play since the early 80's that first year of Walls. Sure Walls is and will be a knob but 1996 could have been anything with abit of luck.
-
...Which brings us to 1998, and once again we found ourselves having to win in round 22 to make the eight. This time against a fairly powerful Melbourne (as hard as that is to believe today.)
The press had really built this game up, and there was huge media interest, and a huge crowd. Like most Tiger fans I suppose, I went to the 'G' with some trepidation, knowing Richmond's record when it comes to winning BIG "crunch" games. And true to form we were dreadful, didn't fire a shot, and once again I went home frustrated, angry, and embarrassed.
My only lasting memory of the actual game itself was that little MAGGOT Jeff Farmer taking a speccie while standing on Scotty Turner's head, which was plastered all over the papers for months to come. I've hated that little scumbag ever since. Ah, the wonderful memories being a Tiger tragic :'(

A dreadful away record beating only Adelaide in Adelaide whereas we won all our 11 home games that season. It was dubbed white shorts as we were hopeless in the white shorts and won 1 away game for the season but unbeatable in the black ones that year.
We lost to Hawthorn late in the season at Waverley kicking four goals for the match.
Handed Brisbane their first win of the year up in Brisbane in rd 6 and they won the spoon in 98.
Lost to Collingwood on a Friday night in rd 4 in white shorts.
Led Essendon St Kilda Sydney and W Bulldogs at 3 qt time in the white shorts only to be overrun in the last. To make this even more gutrenching for those of us that are still lucid in their memories it seemed every away game that year was either a milestone game for someone in the opposition whether a player or Sheedy breaking Reynolds coaching record the case of the Essendon game or the media had towelled our opposition during the week for an insipid performance the week(s) before and they were nice and fired up.
We won two games in succession twice rd 7-8 and 14-15 the latter having us at 9-6 and with a bit of momentum after we beat the Optus Oval Filth by 62 points in rd 14 on a Friday night and Freo by 15 goals at the G the following week but the weeks break was the State of Origin week and yep Matty Knights pulled his hammy that night and his form was never the same again that season.
That Melbourne game in rd 22 was a pre game parade of crap hosted by tv weatherman Rob Gell and I knew when I saw that crap we were stuffed. Our record was crap in the games that meant something to our opposition. Huge crowd of about 75 thousand that day. Snow season did finish early as it was an unusually mild winter which coincided with a late season Melbourne revival unlike the frigid 1997 weather and Melbourne's poor season. Anyone remember Thredbo that year?
My most lucid memory of that game other than all the Dee crap love in and this I kid you not! was this poor RFC bloke in the last qtr had to endure a few Melbourne women standing up for the entire last qtr in the Olympic Stand. Words were exchanged after he'd politely asked them to sit down and one of the ladies husbands was called in by his wife to which the RFC bloke without giving him a chance to say anything was punched squarely in the face. Needless to say the Melb bloke hastily retreated as did the ladies much to comments of we'll win the fight and why aren't you playing for the Tigers son from the yellow and black faithful only for a similar scenario to occur in 2000 against the same opposition after an 8 goal second half comeback by us and a narrow miss by Broderick to put us in front only for the same women to be carrying on once again the same husband was brought in only for his stay to be as brief as it was in 1998.
Same Melbourne fans and same Richmond fan.
-
I was thinking, like you said that this was a huge coincidence. But then it occurred to me that both sets of fans probably had reserved seats. Or maybe not. Either way, I'd like to think that this time the Richmond fan got his revenge, and smacked the smug upper-class Dee twit square in the chops. But he probably didn't :-\
-
Top deck Olympic Stand General seating area both times.
Both times Melbourne fan got smacked.
Both times Melbourbe beat Richmond.

Happy memories :P
We spent most of that year like others to come bouncing between 8th and 9th with our timing off come the end of round 22. Every time we'd have a good win or two we would throw away a winnable game and slip down the ladder again rather than cementing our spot in the top 8. In hindsight it was the beginning of the mental weakness of the side that we've seen since. There was no killer instinct. Even though our percentage was good that year we didn't go for the throat when we had the opportunity and paid in the end. Not sure if it was a Walls thing as we weren't so soft under Northey. The second Essendon loss was the worst lost that year. 26 points up at half-time and then the Bombers come out and kick 8 goals to 1 in the 3rd. The '98 Sheeds-Reynolds milestone game was similar. . Weak as! It seemed the only time the side fired up for a game was after a loss or two after they had been publicly bagged. Apart from that we just seemed to try to get away with just the minimum we had to. A bunch of pretenders and teasers.
In that round 22 in 1996 late in the 3rd quarter Dutchy Holland had a chance to put us up by 16 points going into 3/4 time. He misses and North kick 2 goals in the final minute to grab the lead and the rest is history.
The midseason break in 1998 stuffed up our momentum. We had won easily in rounds 14-15 to go 9-6 although we lost Dutchy to a shoulder who was actually in some good form at that time. Essendon were struggling but regrouped thanks to the break plus it being milestone game for them. After that game I knew we were gone. 20 points up midway through the 3rd yet just rolled over in the last 40 minutes. Despite picking up a couple more cheap wins against bottom sides to bring it all down to that Melbourne game in round 22 there was no way we were going to win it. The Dees were in red hot form coming home like a train whereas we had limped home in the final 7 rounds. No surprise we got flogged.
Let's hope Hardwick with this new young group can eventually install some mental hardness and killer instinct into them in a few years time when they mature as a team so we never see such soft crap like that ever again :pray.

Friday 26th Feb 1:45am - 3:45am
Richmond takes on Fremantle in round 4 of the 2000 AFL Premiership season.
http://www.stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2000/081420000402.html
Talk about a cavalcade of dud kicks :P after rewatching some of this game. Nothing like re-seeing Duncan's up and under helicopter kicks that go anywhere :lol. You also realise why Mills and Poyas never made it watching this game. Mills was playing his first game and he couldn't kick to save himself while Poyas was just plain too slow for AFL. It would only take another 10 years for coaches and recruiters at Richmond to realise kicking is the crucial skill in footy ::).

Chooseday Night Football on Foxsports
Vote for Richmond game here:

Is the NAB Cup not quite filling your hunger for big bumps, great goals and soaring screamers? Here, take a bite of Chooseday Night Football.
Fans are swamping polling stations - located at foxsports.com.au - to demand which match they want to relive.
Each week we will offer up three classic AFL matches, and you can choose the match you most want to watch by voting on foxsports.com.au by 11pm (EDT) Monday, March 8.
It sounds simple because it is.
For this week's choices, we're offering three bruising battles to select from. The most popular game will go to air on Tuesday, March 9, at 6pm on Fox Sports 2HD and Fox Sports 2.
This week's three games offer standout performances from the nice guys of the AFL. We've got Richmond hero Matthew Richardson, Essendon golden boy James Hird and Carlton champion Anthony Koutoufides doing what they did best.
Cast your vote in the poll at the bottom of this page.
Richmond v Essendon, round 21, 2006
He had his flaws, Richo, but he was impossible to stop when he was on. This night match at the home of AFL in 2006 had a bit of everything from the son of a former Richmond gun. He booted nine goals and sprayed a host of chances in a heroic performance against the Bombers. It was enough for three Brownlow Medal votes, but would it get the four points? Vote now to find out.
Essendon v West Coast, round 3, 2004
Have James Hird's silky skills been more prominent than on this night against West Coast? Hird had a bit to say and pay in the lead-up to this Telstra Dome clash with the Eagles. The respected Essendon skipper wasn't happy with an umpire, and the AFL in turn wasn't happy with him. A cool $20,000 later, and Hird looked relieved to be on the field of battle. Thirty-four disposals, three goals and a hug for a bloke in the crowd proved it. Peculiarly, Hird wasn't handed a Brownlow vote for his troubles. Fair? Vote now and you decide.
Carlton v North Melbourne, round 11, 2000
Before he was a gladiator, Kouta roamed AFL fields with the strength, speed and skill of, well, a gladiator. Arguably the finest physical specimen to play the game, the Carlton No.43 could pluck the Sherrin off the turf with one oversized mit and bound away from opponents. Against the Kangaroos in 2000, he gathered the footy 38 times and booted five goals. The Roos threw everything at him, but, in his prime, damage limitation was an opposition's only hope.

Healy commentating during the first quarter...
"Young Jurica is a find. He's only played 5 games but you can see the talent. Whoever has done the recruiting for Richmond over the past couple of years has done a wonderful job. With Richardson still a baby and Edwards to come back into the side, the Tigers have untold wealth in talls for the years to come.
If they miss out this year (1995) it won't matter as they'll have plenty of successful years ahead of them."
:P

Is absolute toilet slop.
Brian Taylor is a fat toad that gets off on clown cliches
Gerard Healy is a homeless prostitutes spit that's somehow evolved into a scumbad of a human that's run his mouth all night on how good some random kid from freo is and slams Cotchin for only having 10 kicks in 2 and a bit qtr.
Foxtel you're a disgrace the most bias bull$hit call Ive ever heard.
-
"What do you think of Silvagnis game up forward Gerard?"
"Oh he's been really creative BT"
He's had 5 kicks 0 shots at goal.
Well Ill be stuffed..
What has been worse the umpires or the commentators...

Why is it bias ?
What they are saying is spot on.
If our forwards played in front and Riewoldt removed his finger outof his backside, we would be closer
-
Freo have been junk..
11.19 is a disgrace. They have never once mentioned how wasteful they've been. Yet lay the boots in when ever the 16th team stuffs up.
Shove the purple haze fashion up ur backside
Call the stuffing game u flogs..
-
Do you remember just before the game even started, they threw to a commercial break with a two-minute highlight package of Freo in recent games?
Not one single clip of Richmond. How biased was that?
As for that fat gob-schmitt Brian Taylor, it's obvious he's never forgiven the club for leaving him out of the '82 GF, or showing him the door.
I suppose we should be grateful that Dwayne Russell and Tony Shaw weren't commentating :lol

Dead right Pope. I wanted to put my fist through the screen and grab the flog by the throat. I thought the Sydney game was bad for biased immature commentating but Taylor in particular was an absolute disgrace last night. His gushing enthusiasm for everything Fremantle did right (like kicking 22 behinds) and everything we did wrong (like leading the undefeated opposition on their own dung hill easily at 1/4 time and then taking it to them all night with a bunch of kids) was an embarrassment to himself as a professional commentator. You really do have to wonder if he has some long standing resentment because he was pathetic.

For those night owls up now 7TWO is replaying Richmond vs Fremantle from R13, 1999.
The one where Ben Hollands kicks the winning goal and with other rememberable names McKee, Plapp, Sampson and Proctor. Richo looking like the mummy after copping a whack to the head got the 3 Brownlow votes.

If you have a decent enough monthly internet allowance, I can usually find an online stream of the game. No ads, and it's not shown on a delay normally.

Always can get torrents of the game a day or two after, but never been able to find a decent live stream

Foxtel given the go ahead to bid for 5 AFL games per week. Looks like the AFL will now get their $1 billion tv deal

We missed 1 game live via TV this year and I found it live streaming on the net. Via a UK station so it seemed a bit strange watching footy with UK ads but it was fine. Quality was ok (quite watchable) but not fantastic - a by-product of not having high speed broadband I fear. And we got whacked (the Kangaroos game in the wet) so that didn't help! :'(

Not on Foxtel it wont
GF & "Blockbuster games" (eg ANZAC day) are still on the anti-siphoning list and cannot be sold directly to PayTV, can only be sold to FTA networks
Abd BTW - there won't be any changes to who covers what in the AFL in 2011 as there is a contract in place that doesn't expire until the end of 2011. the 2011 draw clearly states who is showing what games except for round 22
However, my understanding is that the availabilty for say Ch 7 to show Friday night footy live on 7Two or 7Mate is there. This is a massive win for interstate IMHO
And what has happened to Ch7's HD channel (Ch 70) it isn't in HD anymore ;D

Not sure I'm allowed to post it publically

Right about now would be nice to still have Fox Footy. A channel you can stuff to and watch some football, instead of the crap that's on almost all channels at the moment.

Yep but just about every program they showed wasn't in HD anyway - they just didnt have the content - so no great loss.
One, SBS and Foxtel are pretty much the only places you'll see HD content these days.
-
I wonder if we will ever be forced to subscribe to Foxtel HD to get some of the games?

Hey WP, are you with Foxtel through Telstra or Foxtel directly? If it is through Telstra than you have no bargaining power.
If you have it through Foxtel, call up to cancel with your valid reasons, they will say "yes, not a problem". At a point down the track someone will call back to confirm you want to cancel, at which point you say "yes, still not value for money" . . . Usually a day or 2 before the cancellation takes effect, the retentions team gives you a call and this is where the magic happens! :cheers

Foxtel direct JVT, been with them since the original sattelite mob Galaxy went belly up and Foxtel took them over.
Only wnat to upgrade to HD to get better picture quality - the standard grpahics on the sports channels is horrible

Definitely go the way I suggested WP.
If they actually do let you cancel (which they wont) you will be able to sign up to a better deal come Christmas time anyways which I am sure will include HD ;)
-
JVT is spot on WP. We always do it with their affiliate up here in Austar. Treat em mean, keep em keen is the motto. :thumbsup
I once got their entire catalog for about 50 bucks a month. Now I only reinvest come footy time. and they are always eager to get us back.
-
Update on the 'remote' situation:
My lovely missus rang Foxtel (on the QT) this morning to inquire about a straight out purchase, thinking it would be a good gift idea. Turns out they do intend to market them individually early in the New Year (late Jan/early Feb) after the current club promotions finish. They are offering this deal to all AFL club members with remotes badged accordingly but it will be possible to purchase one badged in the team colours of your choice early next year.
-
It really does work, WP.
Just say you want to cut it right then and there and they will put you straight through to the deal makers.
Are those remotes only for Foxtel or does Austar have them as well?
-
Coming up today from 1pm on Fox Footy is the round 3 game last year against Melbourne. Rewatch our 9 goal third quarter demolition :thumbsup.

Considering getting foxtel's current sports deal. All you get is the starter pack and sports channels including fox footy. Its 60 a week. Is this reasonable or are all of you paying less?

Stuff foxtel. They should offer the AFL channel alone for $10 a month.
-
They should considering thats the main reason I want it. I might watch a bit of other sport here and there but still
-
Has anyone tried Foxtel on XBox360? If so is the streaming quality any good and is it a massive load on your Internet downloads or is it pretty reasonable. For $29.50 a month for the standard package and all the footy channels seems pretty good value to me especially as I already have an XBox live account.

agree.
id have some of that action but i aint paying for crap i dont want
Stuff foxtel. They should offer the AFL channel alone for $10 a month.
-
Has anyone tried Foxtel on XBox360? If so is the streaming quality any good and is it a massive load on your Internet downloads or is it pretty reasonable. For $29.50 a month for the standard package and all the footy channels seems pretty good value to me especially as I already have an XBox live account.
I have it on my phone afl live
-
Considering getting foxtel's current sports deal. All you get is the starter pack and sports channels including fox footy. Its 60 a week. Is this reasonable or are all of you paying less?
That's a reasonable deal, but if you're only interested in it for the footy then it might seem a bit steep. Obviously wouldn't be with the HD stations either. I first got Foxtel just for sports and docos, then over time added packages because FTA telly gets loaded with more bull every season. Now I'm on the Platinum HD for $130 or something a month. If you have a decent telly, then I can't stress how awesome footy is in HD. Blows the pants off the 7 digital broadcasts. Best time to get in on Foxtel is when they waive the setup and installation costs. It sounds like a lot of coin out of your pocket at first but IMO once you have it you refuse to go back.
The no ad breaks thing is great too. You get to stay in the moment :cheers

Would be like T-Box I imagine. Personally I would only recommend it if you were on a cable connection, but then you could also be affected by network traffic.

Our round 22 owning of the Bombers is on Fox Footy right now (started at 10:30pm). Enjoy :thumbsup.
I would have loved if we had of kicked straight in that game, would have won easily by 100+
essendon had no interest in the match and indeed I dont particularly rate this match as a win, rather a bye. No pressure not a real AFL match IMHO. It was like a preseason game.

The replay of our round 23 game against the Swans has just started on Fox Footy.
AFL R23 2014, Sydney v Richmond
206 FOX FOOTY HD
Starts: Thu 23 Oct, 2:30 pm. Duration 150 mins.
Richmond's fairytale run continues - 13th halfway through the year, now a win away from playing finals. Their only concern is that win will need to be over Sydney, a star-studded powerhouse who have only dropped 4 games all year.

I watched that game in a pool bar in Bali.
By the end of the game I had the worst case of the runs I've ever had.
World's first case of Bali Belly being caused by poo football.

I misread that post, missing the "l" in pool.
It puts a completely different and disturbing slant on this post :-\

That loss was very painful.
I really loathe North and I'm very sick of losing to them.

Well that 8 goal run they had on the 3rd was easily avoidable but Hardwick did nothing and just copped it
-

I think you'll find that the coaches box was moving players everywhere. The players on the field did not show the required leadership. It's as simple as that!
-
Hardwick is a one-paced coach.
He goes into a game with a set structure and sticks with it because he doesn't have the capacity to innovate on the run.
The Port final was a classic example. Smashed inside 10 minutes and just rolled on for the rest of the game.

Unfortunately if the players aren't up to it nothing the coach can do will make a difference

Well they can't make him a better coach but I still believe in regards to team performance the most significant impact factor is the players

If you watch teams like Hawthorn, the senior players like Hodge start telling all the youngsters where to stand, who to man up on etc when things start going pear shaped for them. Clarkson doesn't have to do much from the box. Same with Geelong. We don't have enough senior players capable of doing these things well.

Meanwhile we have dopey introverts like Deledio just standing there and saying nothing to umpires as his closest opponent Selwood pees claret from his head moments before he pops up and kicks the winning goal.

The thing with that though is, we all know our leaders arnt at the Hawthorn and Geelong standard, that's pretty obvious, SO the coach has to be responsible to make things happen to stop 'runs' if opposition teams kick a few in a row.
DH is a very stubborn man IMO and like someone else said, he goes into a game with a plan but will stick to it no matter what. It will be his down fall if he doesn't learn to go to plan B sometimes. All he needs now is a plan B :shh
-
Hawthorn's leaders initiate changes on the field before Clarkson can relay the instructions. Not excusing Dimma at all but we don't have the quality of an on field coach like a Hodge or a Mitchell. Instead it takes at least 5 minutes for Hardwick to initiate an instruction and then for the runners to finger paint it into pictures the players might understand.

I wouldn't underestimate Clarksons role in developing Hodge, Mitchell, etc as on field leaders. He also made the hard but critical decision to swap them as captains. Makes the tough calls does Clarko - something Dimma can learn from

Great point as well. I remember listening to one of the Hawks coaches on the radio sometime early this year and he was saying something like blokes like Hodge are extensions of the coaching staff. They understand Clarkson and his plan so well that he trusts them to tinker with tactics and match ups and things like that as the game unfolds, leaving him to only having to fine tune and make any major structural change from the box. Our lot are knuckle draggers by comparison.

When Hodge or Mitchell point & scream at their team mates to make position or switch opponents or to just try harder its called leadership, when Jack points & screams at his team mates to make position or switch opponents or to just try harder its called poor behaviour ... go figure! Just pointing it out ...
Mitchell & Hodge both look disappointed & exhibit bad body language when their team mates fail, so does Jack. Rance & Chaplin do their fair share of pointing & screaming too, but that's fine, journo's call it leadership when defenders do it. Maybe we just need a journo to tell us what to think! :shh

I don't think you can compare Jacks on field behaviour to Hodge or Mitchell but I take your point and it's an excellent one.
Jack is an easy target - loud, confident, goal kicker. Someone the quiet introverts hate

Which means they'll probably show all that bollocks but they won't show Menadue win the sprint because that was an exclusive part of 7's broadcast.

2017 GF pre-midnight
1980 GF post-midnight

b]Richmond Grand Final victory 2017, New Year’s Eve, FOX FOOTY[/b]
December 22, 2017
FOX SPORTS
YOU asked, we delivered.
Tiger fans, it’s time to start your new year right.
FOX FOOTY will replay the 2017 Grand Final on New Year’s Eve, timing the match perfectly so that the final siren sounds the second the clock hits midnight.
Starting at 10.10pm on December 31, Richmond fans can once again relive the best moments from that special day — from Josh Caddy’s first, to Dustin Martin’s sealer.
Then, the moment 2018 begins and the clock strikes midnight, Tiger fans will hear the siren — the sound diehard supporters had waited 37 years for — and that famous song, yet again.
Speaking of 37 years ago, the party won’t end there for Richmond supporters.
Kicking off January’s ‘History Month’ on FOX FOOTY, a repeat of the 1980 Grand Final will be shown straight after the 2017 Grand Final on Channel 504.
That’s right, just after midnight on January 1 will be a replay of Richmond’s whopping 81-point belting of Collingwood — a win that secured its 10th of 11 flags.
That means that straight after watching Richmond’s most recent success, Tiger fans will be able to reminisce about Norm Smith winner Kevin Bartlett’s seven-goal haul against the Pies.
Have a happy new year, Tiger fans, from all of us at FOX FOOTY.

Really enjoying watching us finishing of that north bogey again
Given we're premiers and North are bottom 4, hopefully that will be the first of many wins in a row against them :yep.
It's really eating in North supporters that since the 2015 EF we've gone in opposite directions and onto a flag ;D. They deludedly topped up with aging players from other clubs trying to pinch a premiership when they were nowhere near it and it's turned into a disaster. Now their list is stuffed and they have to go into a full rebuild. It's where we were 15 years ago.
-
Watching some of these games, how often does Dan Butler just let go of the ball when tackled or runs into trouble, amazing how he doesn't get pinged more often. He's going to have to be much stronger and smarter with the ball in 18 if he's to keep his spot ahead of Bolton, Higgins and co

I don't think he will still ahead of them. Through Stengle into the mix, and I think Dan might struggle to get much game time next year once Rioli is fit.

Its really burnt them inside. We all remember that Hardwick and Scott started coaching at the same time, we were a rabble, they
had a better list, and a few years later, we have the tin mug in the cabinet, and they are looking at wooden spoons, its really killing
them inside, and if we do what I think is possible again in 2018, its really going to get to them psychologically. North are in a bad way but who cares, they've always been irrelevant anyway.

He will be under the pump from Bolton and co. but Castagna even more so becauase he butchers the footy more often than not. I like Butler as a player, but he and Castagna need to improve if they are not to lose their spots to Bolton and Higgins. I think ButCastagna will
lose his position first, probably to Bolton, so it will be Butler vs Higgins for the last spot.

Richmond Grand Final victory 2017, New Year’s Eve, FOX FOOTY

Their replays this year are standard def but their live games are high def. Just record the games that are shown live.... :shh

When I tried Kayo when it first came out, I had shocking lagging problems between the video and audio. Made it unwatchable.
They told me it was fixed, but it wasn't back then. They even extended my trial, but in the end I just had to say it wasn't for me.
I'd love to go back to it if the problems are fixed. Does anyone know if they have been?
