We are playing St Kilda next week up in Shepparton next Friday, March 6th.
-
Do we have any other details on this, as I would like to go down?
Like what time, what oval, etc?
-
7pm start, not sure which oval.
last night was good that Terry dropped Bowden and Tuck to give the young players a good.
dropped McGuane too? not for that.
but like he said, just looking at the list.
would love to hear Post, Rance, Vickery all play against St Kilda.
if Hughes is 100% play him.
not sure if Cousins should play, probably not. Richardson shouldn't play.
Brown shouldn't play.
Johnson injured.
leave Tuck, Bowden leave out.
maybe give Foley a rest for the next couple of weeks.
Jackson needs to play, Connors and Collins should play.
Simmonds shouldn't play.
Putt should come in.
Pattison? where is he? is he injured?
if not,
play: Graham, Putt, Vickery, Pattison against St Kilda.
maybe rest Newman, what happened to him in the second half last night?
Deledio, Tambling, Moore, McGuane, Thursfield, Morton, Riewoldt: should play.
Deledio Captain against St Kilda and Moore Vice Captain.
the next two weeks should be all about the young players.
-
I couldn't disagree more, the next two weeks should be about getting our starting 22 match fit, which they won't do by sitting on the sidelines.
Obviously Cousins, Johnson, Cotchin, Cogs won't play due to injury plus Richo's already proven he's match fit against Freo. As for the rest of them, time to get the boots on and get ready for Round 1. Blow out the rest of the cob webs and try to get the skills as sharp as possible in match conditions.
-
Well said Infamy agreed.
-
Seems we will be going with more youth in this game.
No Richo, Browny, Johnson or Cousins playing according to today's Herald-Sun.

Excitement building for footy fans
Shepparton News
It was a slow start to ticket sales yesterday for Friday night's blockbuster AFL Challenge match between St Kilda and Richmond. But that didn't stop a horde of enthusiastic punters lining up to ensure their seats for the match. An estimated 200 tickets were snapped up by the close of business.
Deakin Reserve holds 10,000.

Mark Fine from SEN is up there. 4000 crowd. Ground is in great nick - a bowling green. As we know Saints have their big guns while we have a young side.

Im using Winamp, it says it buffers and it is feeding but no audio.

Same here. No sound :(.
Sounds like a long night if we're 3 goals down already and the Saints have the breeze this quarter :-\.
-
Getting the sound fine,
they're not streaming the game though

1.1 to 7.4

6 1/2 minute mark 2nd quarter saints 7.4 tigers 1.1
From BF: it was 1.1 apiece at 22nd minute mark 1st quarter then Gardiner started to dominate against Vickery and Montagna is killing them in middle of ground
-
Let's lull them into a false sense of security. ;)
-
I thinks its 6 or 7 goals to 4 so going ok...

Cheers for posting the score.

From feisty_tige
"Half time 8,3 to 4,2. Thompson Sarge Tambling Thursty and Rance have all been good at times."
Not bad considering the sides on the park. A good comeback of sorts to kick 3 of the last 4 goals against the breeze.
Rich 1.0 4.2-26
St K 4.1 8.3-51
Well done Sarge on kicking 3. Maybe he'll make a FF after all in round 1 given Cleve is injured. Some pleasing signs seeing Thomson, Blingers and Rance having good games.
-
We're getting smashed in the hitouts according to saintsational
Armo 2 goals, Milney 2 goals, Kosi, BJ, X, Gilbert and Bally all 1 goal each
Schulz 3 goals for the tigers
Bally 15 odd disposals up to half-time. Fisher 13, Gilbert 12.
Gardy 16 hitouts (many to advantage), King 8 v Graham 4
-
Yep better than I expected as well... :shh
-
Jools from Y&B
"Gourdis and Tuck busy, Hislop ok. King coaching, TW on bench with players. Saints have far more experience, expect we'll lose by 40 or more. Too much handball in 1st, better in 2nd."

Froim Y&B:
Connors goal
-
hope Jay Schulz becomes our Full Forward!
Go Schulz!
-
Polak is on the ground at FF :thumbsup
Cheers to Jools' updates on Y&B

From SEN
Really good second half according to Finey.
Polak played 2/3s of 3rd quarter. Almost a fairytale start - had a good snap from 40m out but it didn't bounce the right way in the goalsquare.
Finey sounds like he is in a phonebox.
Tiges just got a goal I think he said in the 4th.
-
hope Jay Schulz becomes our Full Forward!
Go Schulz!
Seconded :thumbsup
-
That goal was kicked by Jordie.
-
Goal to Sarge. His 4th :clapping

Final Score
Schulz and Goddard 4 each were the top goalkickers.

a very competitive effort from our kids.
-
I was getting excited about nothing, I thought the first score was ours and the second the saints :(
-
don't like loosing, but 'hey' ...
Jay kicked 4 out of 9 ...
any injuries???
and i know we aren't sure, but was any of Jay's goals from set shots from marks on the lead???
-
Hope someone has a match report, will be interesting to see who played well. Also Polak's first game.
-
Rich 1.0 4.2 7.3 9.3-57
StK 4.1 8.3 12.6 16.13.109
Goals: Sarge 4, Connors 2, Collins, McMahon, ?
Sounds like there were some promising efforts from the kids by the reports around place. Sarge may have just secured FF for round 1 with Cleve doubtful. Good to see Connors kick a couple. Hopefully the media reports mention we had 3/4s of our best 22 out whereas the Saints were only missing 2.

if your relying on Sarge to smash the Full Forward then we are in trouble.
We have massive issues with our FF IMO.
WTF is up with Cleve can someone tell me.
If he aint up to it pee him off

Mark Fine on SEN in shepparton:
He was happy as a Saints man.
Both sides had players out. Richmond all their senior list so he didn't recognize our players. Saints had 3 out.
Finey said Polly seemed to have his awareness out there tonight and "looked like Graham Polak" which was a positive.
Deakin reserve is the best football ground surface in Australia although the lighting is like Albert Park in the old days.
Hislop got a knock early (concussion) and we took him off.
Rance knock on his lower leg late in the game so they took him off as a precaution.
Schulz was the best forward on the ground tonight which is saying something given how little the ball went down there for Richmond. Marked well and kicked beautifully. If the big lug could get some consistency during the real season he could be handy for Richmond as a forward.
Richmond have a number of tall ruckman although they are young and we don't know yet if they can play. Monsters kept coming from the bench. Gardiner however is a great tap ruckman and dominated.
St Kilda full strength team so no surprises from their senior players.
-
The result is utterly meaningless with abrely half a dozen of our top 18 on show. Totally and utterly meaningless. It gave Terry the chance to cast his eye over some of the lesser lights in a semi competitive game and some performed OK.
On the FF point we DO have problems. No denying it.
-
From the AFL site:
Richmond 1.0 4.2 7.3 9.3 (57)
St Kilda 4.1 8.3 12.6 16.13 (109)
GOALS
Richmond: Schulz 4, Connors 2, Collins, McMahon, Tambling.
St Kilda: Goddard 4, Koschitzke 3, Gilbert, Armitage, Milne 2, X Clarke, S Fisher, Gwilt.
BEST
Richmond: Tuck, Schulz, McMahon, Tambling, Silvester.
St Kilda: Hayes, Goddard, Gilbert, S Fisher, Dal Santo, Ball, Montagna, X Clarke.
Injuries
Richmond: Nil.
St Kilda: Nil.

Happy with how the senior players left in the side had good games.
Schulz effort could be very timely given the situation with Hughes. You would have to think with our tall back three settled and with Rance and Silvester in the wings, Schulz isn't really essential in the back half and could be given a go at FF.
Also good to hear Tambling had a good game, I was worried against a full strength saints side and with us nowhere near full strength he might go missing a bit. Sounds like he stood up a bit which is great.

Cheers for that RROFO. That's a terrific thorough summary by sezza :clapping.
Glad to hear Tambling played well for the whole game. A good confidence builder.
I have a mate who is a big Browne fan. Sounds like we have scored a hidden rookie gem once he gets a few more years experience and gets his fitness up to AFL level as he matures.
The main thing from last night is a lot of the young guns got some experience against almost full strength St Kilda side and we got through the match without any injuries.
-
Forget Hughes, he is as soft as butter.
Jay smashes packs where Cleve would be afraid to break a nail. He is a much more competitive option in the forward 50m and he can also play the swingman in defence. The only thing Sarge lacks is consistency but his value is way underrated IMO.
Schulz & Riewoldt as the key forwards in a Richo free zone in '09.
We'll make the 8 if Wallace plays Jay as a key forward for most of the year IMO.
-
I would be happier going into round 1 with Jay at full forward than Hughes. At least Schulz is fit, will give a contest and now has some form on the board.
-
Jay never worked as a forward because he and Richo couldn't work together.
Richo is out of the forward line now, maybe he might make it work if he gets a shot there.
-
and he can kick straight as well
-

Yep Sarge won't have Richo anymore to crash into as he flies for the same ball :P. Sarge isn't the brightest spark on the park. He's also 4 years older than Cleve or thereabouts. Sarge needs to cement a spot somewhere this year with Rance eventually taking over that 4th tall running position down back although Plough has backed Sarge as one of the best kicks off the HB line.
-
He's also 4 years older than Cleve or thereabouts.
Try 1 year and 9 months MT.
There's not that much in it.
-
somebody that told me tonight that Andrew Browne played well in the ruck on friday night?
does anyone agree or comment on his game?
-
Reports are that Browne was our standout ruck during the game. Apparently Gus and Vickery were getting well beaten in the ruck duels but Browne was actually winning many of the contests. Browne was also good around the ground and particularly at ground level especially for someone of his size. Now why this may have been just one game it certainly adds more heat to an already competitive competition for our ruck places.
My personal prediction is that Browne will overtake Gus in the next couple of years to become one of our rucks with Putt eventually joining him with Vickery becoming a tall forward and pinch hitting in the ruck. Patto may be a little slow for the forwardline and it's too early to make a judgement of Putt.
I agree with everyone's opinion regarding our FF. Schulz is the better option at the moment and with Hughes out for a few weeks with injury he will get his chance to claim the position if he begins the season with a bang. He certainly didn't do himself any harm with his performance against the saints (in a losing side yet still heralded as the best forward on the ground).
I am amazed by the small age age difference between the two! :o This may be the year that Schulz not only finds his position in the team but also shines. Given Hughes and Schulz minimial age difference Schulz is the stronger forward prospect by far especially, as others have noted, without Richo injurying him all the time.
I also said that Schulz never got a real chance as a forward because Richo used to dominate the F50 and command the ball leaving Schulz's with no supply. When the ball was finally delievered to Jay Richo would still think it was for him and crash the pack and ruining both their chances to mark. The problem is they play in a very similiar fashion but the difference is Schulz would not be the only target up forward for us he would be share the scoring with Riewoldt, Brown and Morton.
Hope he grasps his chance.

Tiger cubs shine in Shepparton
Richmond’s emerging stars were given another tick of approval in last Friday night’s NAB Challenge match against St Kilda in Shepparton.
Resting many of its stars ahead of a final pre-season hitout against Brisbane on the Gold Coast this week, the Club’s “next wave” took their chance to experience some valuable game time against a seasoned Saints’ outfit.
The Tigers’ coaching staff, including stand-in coach David King, had plenty to smile about.
“Our plan was to play our younger players in the third week of the NAB series, like a lot of the other teams have . . . we were thrilled with some of the efforts of the younger guys,” King said.
“We set a few challenges in terms of the young rucks against the experienced rucks, and their experienced ball-getters in the middle of the ground.
“Sure, they (the Saints) got hold of them in the end, but there were patches in the game where we were thrilled with their output.
“It’s a real stepping stone for the Club and those younger players.”
King made special mention of the younger Richmond ruckmen, who in the absence of regulars Troy Simmonds and Adam Pattison, competed manfully against the experienced St Kilda duo of Steven King and Michael Gardiner.
Tyrone Vickery, in just his second game at senior league level, again showed promising signs, while debutant Andrew Browne, and 21-year-old Angus Graham, looked at home at the highest level.
Mature-age rookie, Jarrod Silvester, outlined the considerable depth of the Tigers’ defensive stocks by being named among the team’s best players on the night.
Also in defence, 19-year-old Alex Rance continued to display his impressive credentials after almost breaking through for senior selection last season.
Richmond got through the match unscathed injury-wise, and will welcome back several big names for the final NAB series match this Friday night.
Among those missing from the match against St Kilda in Shepparton were Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Chris Newman, Nathan Brown, Nathan Foley, Ben Cousins, Jack Riewoldt and Kelvin Moore.

Oops :-[ I knew I shouldn't have been lazy and instead looked it up :wallywink. Sarge just feels he's been at Tigerland for ages. He still have 3 years more AFL experience than Cleve.
