Jack jumping for crack at Tiger hotspot

JACK Riewoldt wants to defy football history this season.
History gives the Richmond youngster little, if any chance of successfully holding down centre half-forward all year.
Only a special few have made a considerable impact in the toughest position on the ground in only their third AFL season.
But, if the Tigers are going to deliver on their burning finals ambition, then Riewoldt knows he has to play a key role.
Not that it worries him.
The 26-gamer has relished the challenge, fast-tracking his development and building a bigger engine to cover the ground required of the club's chief forward target.
Not satisfied with filling a gap, the eager Tiger has set himself high expectations and said he was ready and able to become a match-winner.
"I want to be kicking the winning goal and taking the winning mark and being involved in the winning play,'' Riewoldt said.
"They are the situations I want to put myself in to make it as a top-line AFL player.
"It (centre half-forward) is one of those positions where you can really impact on games and I think I showed last year I have the ability to turn games, although I probably only showed it in a couple of quarters.
"But I think this is going to be the year where I can string a few of those good quarters together and turn them into good, strong games where I can really have a good impact.''
Lofty goals, but insiders at Richmond say everything they've seen of Riewoldt in the past 12 months suggests their up-and-comer is on track for a break-out campaign.
The spring-heeled redhead played 18 of the last 19 matches last season, showing everyone his capabilities with a truly stunning five-goal haul against West Coast at Subiaco Oval in Round 15.
In all, he's averaged one goal, one score assist and one contested mark, and laid the equal most tackles of any Tiger in the forward arc last season.
Not bad for someone, especially a key forward, still in his footballing infancy.
Craving more responsibility, Riewoldt's main challenge will come in the form of standing bigger, stronger and more experienced defenders every week.
Listed at 194cm (1cm taller than superstar cousin Nick) and 87kg, the likable Tasmanian junior is, admittedly, still a bit of a lightweight in the key forward stakes.
But to compensate, the goalkicker has improved his endurance over summer in a bid to out-run and out-smart, rather than out-muscle, his bulkier opponents.
"I'm obviously not the biggest bloke going around body-wise, but I think I make up for what I lack in that area with footy smarts,'' he said.
"Now I'm in my third season, the midfielders and Richmond need Riewoldt to stand up, and finish in the top-half of its best and fairest, a task not beyond him.
Coach Terry Wallace has already invested faith in Riewoldt, giving his young charge the nod to start centre half-forward against Carlton, in front of a bumper crowd at the MCG, to open the season.
"I think that (is) where I will start and that's where Terry said he wants me to start,'' Riewoldt said.
"Speaking to him and (assistant coach) Brian Royal, that's where they want me to play most of the year.''
Vice-captain Nathan Foley said the former Tassie junior was brimming with confidence through the pre-season.
"Jack is a real leader around the club and he plays like that on the field,'' Foley said.
"He presents up and is a great target. For his age, his knowledge of the game is quite high.
"He's had a great pre-season and his form in the first couple of games reflects that, he is working really hard.''
While his goalkicking let him down against Collingwood, bagging 0.3, Riewoldt looked to have an increased presence, applying himself with vigour and purpose at each contest.
Importantly, a lot of his grabs stuck, giving the Richmond forward line, which is littered with smaller, roving targets such as Mitch Morton, Nathan Brown and Ben Cousins, vital structure.
THAT'S not forgetting Matthew Richardson, who will spend more time up field pursuing his transformation to a floating midfielder.
Taking the forward reins from arguably the most-loved figure in yellow and black cannot be easy, but Riewoldt isn't concerned by the lengthy shadow Richardson casts.
Instead, the 13th pick in the 2006 national draft is inspired by his teammate's feats, and wants to win for him.
"We know Richo's not going to be around forever and someone needs to step up into his shoes and that's why I'm taking more responsibility in the forward line,'' he said.
"He sets such a great benchmark with his work ethic for all the players at the club, and I think it has improved us immensely as a group watching him gut-run, because you feel like you're letting him down when you don't do the same.
"He has been here a long time and not had a lot of success, and we are all in it for ourselves, but for the big guy it would be nice to help him out.''
-
hard not to love this guy. IMO he is an absolute beauty and outside of Richo is fast becoming my favourite.
I believe he can deliver and he has cousin Nick feeding him all the right advice every step of the way.

Well, well, I am now officially worried. The first 3 posts I read this morning are all from Daniel and I agree 100% with all 3 - March commenting on Sheedy, Cousins and Foley, and now Jack. Saves me the effort of commenting on them all so I'll just say - "what Daniel said".
And I never thought I would see the day! ???
-
Hadnt won me over till recently when his engine became apparent in the NAB Cup. He covered massive ground, took some nice marks and showed he could be influential from CHF. He is progressing, and soon he will have me having to apologise for writing that he was only an average player.
-
One of our top 3 exciting youngsters.

thats right and dont you forget buddy. Jack is a star. He wants to suceed, he is confident not like Mr Richie who seems to drown in his own sorrows
every time he runs onto a Football field.
He reminds of a young Richo bouncing around jumping around all over the place screaming out on the field.
Jack is a very important part of us making the finals. If only others played like him i.e Cleve Hughes we would not have a single worry in our forward line.

Don't get too carried away - I have been a Jack fan since day dot so you are preaching to the converted. I only highlighted the fact that I actually agreed with 3 of your posts - that wouldn't have happened in total since we have both been on this forum, let alone in a row on the same day.

Good advice Ox but you gotta love his confidence.
As long as he's walking the talk, he can shout if from the top of the MCG lighting structure for all I care.
-
I think he should zip it - cart before the horse a bit.
Talk up the team and playing a role but the turning matches come making his mark bit needs to actually happen first before he talks about it. He'll be the target on field (and most probably on this forum!!!) for the rest of the season if he doesn't back it up.
-
From what I have seen of Jack he is one person that just won't keep it shut no matter what.
As MM said though as long as he is walking the talk, continue on young Jack and continue on with your impressive start to the year.

Maybe that is just Jack being Jack. Talk it up big and then deliver. He is progressing along nicely and no reason to think he can't deliver if he does the work

We knew he was like that when we drafted him and it is part of why he is considered a young leader at the club. You can't stifle that enthusiasm, that's just silly.
-
In Jack's defence, he never said he could do all those things - he said he wanted to.
"I want to be kicking the winning goal and taking the winning mark and being involved in the winning play, Riewoldt said."
"They are the situations I want to put myself in to make it as a top-line AFL player."
That is just verbalizing his goals and frankly I am far more comfortable and confident of a player shooting for the top than just being content with the ride.

exactly we have enough passengers in this side and its about time we find a player like jack who wants to succeed instead of the usual Cleve hughes, Jay Schulz and Pettifer who are so lazy they shouldn't even be called Footballers

I would say that letting a 19yo kid say whatever he likes is silly, that is why they have things like media training.
You don't need to stifle his enthusiasm, just help him direct it into the right areas during media interviews to avoid him being exposed or putting unnecessary pressure on performance.
The really good ones deliver the performance and respond with humility when asked about it - not the other way around, whether it is
aspirational or due to over exuberance.

But what did he say that was wrong? He wasn't being asked to review a performance - he was being very honest about his capabilities and limitations and what he believed to be the next step to aim for. Reading the interview again, I would say he has been media-coached to some extent and he presented very well.

Jack Riewoldt jumping for crack at Tiger hotspot
LMAOOOO @ This

I remember talking to Francis Jackson about young Jack a little while ago.
FJ reckons the thing about Jack that sets him apart is that Jack actually believes that he is a genuine champion AFL footballer. Jack is the most confident and gregarious young man at the RFC, its just a matter of time until he delivers.
Jack is an emerging superstar. By the end of 2009 he will be considered our great young hope along with Lids and Cotch, he is that good.

Didn't want start a new thread for this but Jack is another Tiger helping out a Aussie athlete....
Jack had a hammer
Martin Boulton | March 20, 2009
THE season opener between Carlton and Richmond, plus the much-anticipated showdown between former West Coast teammates Chris Judd and Ben Cousins, is less than a week away, but, in the frenzied build-up, Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt has been busy beyond the sphere of football.
Now in his third season at Tigerland, Riewoldt had a former life as a junior athlete specialising in discus and hammer throwing and he has been happy to offer encouragement to promising discus thrower and shot-putter Kim Mulhall, 18, who is competing at this week's Australian championships in Brisbane.
Mulhall, above, who won the Victorian championships in the disciplines last year, is working towards a spot on the Australian Olympic team for London 2012.
Recently, she has been dropping into Punt Road to chat with Riewoldt.
"He's a really nice guy and it's good to watch those boys train and gain some knowledge from other sports, as well as my own," she told Sporting Life.
"He's really interested in what I'm doing and I'll head back to the club in future when I get a chance."
Mulhall, who tasted victory in the discus as a 15-year-old at the Australian athletics championships, said her training ahead of the national championships had been ideal.
"Hopefully I can get some PBs out, which would be great," she said.

Go Riewoldt!
-
I find it very hard to believe that Jack is a 1cm taller than Nick?? I think Jack may have been standing on his ego!
I hope he can stand-up this year.
Pardon the pun...

And you might be right but this is the problem. Over the past 30 years too many tiger players have been wrapped up supporters and the media only to get ahead of themselves and blow it. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

It took to round 5 and he was lucky to still be in the side based on his first 4 games this year but a big welcome back to form Jack. Stood up big time tonight.
