Cuz to play for Coburg this week
richmondfc.com.au
By Mic Cullen 5:20 PM Thu 30 April, 2009

BEN Cousins will step out in the VFL for Coburg on Saturday and could be just one game away from an AFL return.

The 30-year-old hasn’t played since he tore his hamstring more than a month ago in the Tigers round one loss to Carlton.

Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan said Cousins would play almost a full game for Coburg.

"He'll play in blocks of time, and he'll end up with about 60 or 70 per cent of game time," Monaghan told richmondfc.com.au on Thursday afternoon.

"He's been training really really well, he just needs a bit more match practice, and he'll certainly get that playing for Coburg."

Monaghan said the way Cousins got through the game and recovered would be major factors in where he played next weekend.

"Absolutely – we'd be crystal-balling a little bit with what might occur next week, because it largely depends on how he gets through the game, how he feels and responds early next week,” he said.

"We'll just wait and see on that one."

Joining Cousins at Coburg for the match against the Casey Scorpions will be young midfielder Trent Cotchin, ruckman Troy Simmonds and forward Kane Pettifer, who has played a couple of games for the Coburg reserves on his way back from a knee reconstruction.

Andrew Raines, Shane Edwards and Jay Schulz – who has booted 10 goals in the past two weeks for the Burgers – have been included on an extended Richmond squad which boasts an unchanged 22.

So that trio could also play for Coburg if they don't travel to Sydney with the AFL team.

For Casey, Jack Watts is in line to make his senior VFL debut, and if he does, could play alongside Russell Robertson, Austin Wonaeamirri and Matthew Whelan.

The game will be played at ABD Group Stadium in Russell Street, Coburg, starting at 1:10pm.

It will also be broadcast live on ABC TV.

That must be one of the strongest Coburg sides put on the park. Even with 4 RFC players to go up to the Richmond bench that still leaves 17 others remaining :o.  That side might even give the AFL side a run for its money  :whistle.

Gourdis, Browne, J.Hislop and Jordan are named in both squads whereas the others on the Coburg extended bench aren't so you'd assume that means Goo and Browne are playing Coburg 2nds tomorrow along with Cleve, Post and Polly.

So the Coburg side should have 15 RFC guys playing:

B:   Raines       Silvester       Morgan

HB: Connors    Thursfield      King

C:   Clarke       A. Horne      Liddle

HF:  Cousins     Vickery        Pettifer

Big names step out for Tigers
Brent Diamond | May 2, 2009

COBURG:
Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins will be the headline act in today's VFL action as he lines up for the Coburg Tigers against the Casey Scorpions at Coburg Oval.

It will be the 30-year-old's first game back since injuring his hamstring in the Tigers' season-opener against Carlton.

Joining Cousins in the Coburg line-up is rising star Trent Cotchin, ruckman Troy Simmonds and Kayne Pettifer, who has played two Coburg reserves games on his way back from a knee reconstruction.

Coburg general manager Ryan O'Connor said Cousins would be a great advertisement for the VFL.

"To have a Brownlow medallist and premiership player down here is of an enormous value to the club," he said.

Cousins is expected to have about 60 to 70 per cent game time in preparation for his return to the AFL.

For the Scorpions, Melbourne's No. 1 draft selection, Jack Watts, will make his first VFL senior appearance after a couple of reserves matches. "We're taking a cautious approach with Jack," said Melbourne football operations manager Craig Notman. "Watts had done about 20-odd training sessions compared to Brad Miller, who's done 132."

Rawlings on ABC:

* Played okay last week but not up to Box Hill's level.

* Cleary asked what Coburg supporters can get excited about today? Rawlings said Petts lol and Morgan (first game back since he broke his leg).

* Rawlings said he's looking for a committed competitive performance today.

Pretty average quarter. Coburg looked better but couldn't convert it on the scoreboard when going inside 50.

Cuz and Cotch are a class above.
Connors is sadly playing for himself.
Silvester, Thursty and Morgan looking solid in defence.
Rainesy and Petts look short of a gallop.
Simmo has been solid.

Possies:
Cousins   8
Cotch     7
Connors   7
Schulz    6
Petts     6

Thursty on Watts. Goes up as 3rd man in the pack but fails to spoil and Watts gets his second.

Connors clears from the centree but it's a point.

Thursty makes another error as Casey clear and run it up the other end.

16 - 19

Cuz's hard work gets it to Schulz who plays on instead of having a shot and tries to get it to Connors. Casey deliberately hit over the line. Connors OOTF.

King gets it back and gets a lucky 50m. Goal  :gotigers.

Tim Clarke is rubbish, I think he's turned it over every time he's had it and fumbled off the ground plenty of time, once missing an easy goal had he taken clean possession.

Simmonds is dominating

Petts has been pretty good too, just kicked a goal

Cousins is getting leather poisoning but his team mates are looking for him at every opportunity

Too many Burgers playing like a bunch of prima donnas. Very individualistic. We are winning the clearances but our forward entries aren't working and Casey is able to score on the rebound. Coburg have had about 50 more disposals but 8 less inside 50s.

Cuz and Simmo would be the best RFC guys to half-time.
Cotch was working hard in close but was quiet that 2nd quarter.
Edwards doing okay in a back pocket.
Schulz has taken some good grabs.
Petts has got plenty of the ball for his first game at VFL level but made a couple of turnovers.
Connors has been a show pony and even spoiled teammates selfishly going for the footy when his teammate was in better position Undecided.
Rainesy and Thursty are having shockers.
Thommo and Hislop are just fringe players. Waste of draft picks.
Putt and Vickery have been very quiet although Vickery has done okay in the ruck.

The umpiring has been shocking btw. Talk about inconsistent  :scream

After watching the first half I make the following observations:
Raines is crap
Simmonds is finished
Hislop & Thomson wasted picks (again)
King (meh)
Vickery is too slow dont think he will make it.
Thursty out of sorts
Connors is lazy and plain dumb at times
Cousins & Cotchin going well
Edwards is going well

Jeez do you want to announce the end of enough careers in this post? Simmonds has been one of Coburg's best FFS.

Simmonds & Cousins the one ones worth a call up next week so far. Cotchin still needs more time, he had a good first quarter but that's about it.

Really disappointing effort by Coburg today. On paper the Burgers looked the far stronger side but Casey functioned as a better team and played the better style of footy on the counterattack. Too many individuals in red and navy today (points finger especially at Daniel Connors). Seems quite a few felt they just needed to turn up and they would win. Very Richmond-esque too especially that pitiful 3rd quarter with all those backward handballs and kicks out wide to contests  :P. Not a good day in the office from Rawlings.

Edwards - not sure I'd give him Coburg's best but he was very good today as a small defender/HBFer. Clean with his disposal which was pleasing to see.

Simmo - gave Coburg first use out of the centre and was generally good. First half better than the second IMO.

Cousins - was given 10 minute bursts and looked a class above although he probably didn't have the damaging effect as Casey we actually paying attention to him. What stood out for mine was his second efforts after his initial disposal to run forward and link up as well his willingness to work hard inside and out. A lesson to a few of his younger lazier and downhill skiing teammates  ::). The main thing was Cuz got through okay. You'd probably give him another run at Coburg until he runs out a full game.

Petts - made a couple of turnovers but overall a good return from him in more a midfield/behind the ball role. Actually thought he was one of the few Burgers who was willing to work hard over the whole ground. 32 possies, 12 marks shows that.

Cotch - showed his class but looked to still be quite a fair way away from the match fitness needed to get a call up for mine. First quarter was very good and he worked hard in close throughout the game when he was on the ground but that outside game breaking away from stoppages was missing from what we saw in the second of the year at AFL level.

Schulz - took a few nice contested grabs but most were too far out or wide to translate into goals.

Connors - left his brain in the changerooms. Very selfish game from Daniel today trying to be too cute with party tricks trying to dodge and weave around everyone like he was a millionaire and we were 100 points up.

King - typically Kingy. Hard at it but skills are sub-par even at this level.

Hislop - got more into the game in the second half but really is just a player. A waste of a draft pick.

Thommo - See Hislop. Another top up fringer player who can't kick. A waste of a 3rd round pick  :banghead. Seemed to cop a few high ones from Casey players which the ump ignored and friendly fire.

Vickery - had a shocker after last week's promising game. Some soft efforts as a forward. Always caught behind his opponent and failed to contest to keep the ball down near his feet.

Putt - Quiet and ineffective. Why won't you kick the ball Putty  ???

Rainesy - shocker. Footskills were woeful.

Thursty - pretty forgettable day apart from a couple of good defensive marks. Sadly looks out of sorts.

Silvester - good early and tried hard all day.

I thought too most of the Burger players had off days too making basic skill errors such as dropping marks and turning over the footy.

It pains me to say but I'm not too impressed with Vickery's marking ability, rarely gets into the right position in a contest, often failing to even get a mit to it...hope it's just his rawness...would have preferred some more positive signs  ::)

Hopefully it is rawness and the inconsistency of youth. He's had yo-yo form so far. Promisingly good one week then goes missing the next. At U18 level he was a good mark. To me it's the adjustment to open-age footy. He doesn't yet have the physical strength and size to outmuscle his opponent in a contested marking situation. At junior level against peers his own age he would just outsize them in marking contests.

Crowd turns out to see Ben Cousins' VFL return
AAP | May 02, 2009 04:00pm

BEN Cousins is in line for a return to Richmond next week after making an impressive return from injury in the VFL on Saturday.

Cousins lined up with Coburg in his first game in more than a month since he tore a hamstring in the Tigers' round one loss to Carlton.

The veteran midfielder played in 10-minute bursts against the Casey Scorpions and showed no signs of being hampered by the problem.

He worked at full pace and by three-quarter time had notched 22 possessions.

Alongside Cousins for Coburg were fellow midfielder Trent Cotchin, ruckman Troy Simmonds and forward Kane Pettifer, who is working his way back from a knee reconstruction.

Melbourne's No.1 draft pick Jack Watts made a dazzling senior VFL debut for the Scorpions, kicking three goals, including a spectacular shot from an acute angle in the final term.

Small forward Austin Wonaeamirri and Matthew Whelan are also on track to return to Melbourne's side after getting through the match unscathed.

Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan said this week the state of Cousins' recovery after the game would be the key in where he played next weekend.

Cousins' knee was heavily iced when he came off in the last quarter but Tiger officials said it was a purely precautionary measure.

Casey broke away from Coburg after half time to cruise to a 17.13 (115) to 11.7 (73) win.

I'm surprised Petts wasn't listed in the best somewhere, he worked pretty hard all day.
I didn't think Thursfield was that bad either

Far too early to be writing off guys like Hislop and Thomson, Hislop is tough in the contest and seems to pop up with a couple of goals in most games. Thomson also copped a few pretty big hits and knocks to the head.

Thomson is 22 (turns 23 in August). He's an ordinary kick and WYSIWYG at that age for a midfielder. This sort of trade (giving up a 3rd pick for a fringe player at best) is another illustration of the problem with Richmond's recruiting over the years. If you're trading a good pick for a more mature player to top-up the list he at least should walk into your best 22 and improve the quality in the side otherwise you are not improving your list and worst still you've deprived your list of another kid. It's this sort of trading that results in age bracket holes in your list as we all know. Morton for instance has walked into our best 22 and is a better player than who he replaced (Petts) so that was a good trade.

pettifer certainly wasnt' in the best for me.  the only thing he did well was that he covered alot of ground and picked up possessions.  but he was way too slow to dispose of the ball after taking a mark.  too often bombed the ball aimlessly forward after getting the ball.  waste. shouldnt' play for richmond again.

about cotchin, certainly would need to build up a bit more fitness but everytime he got it was clean and decisive with his disposals.  one thing i think he needs to change is to be more selfish.  too often he gets the ball, has space to work it but automatically gives the ball to a team mate just cos they called for it.  in effect, it just wasted his possession when his team mate fumbles or turns it over.  that's teh problem when you're too good for some of your team mates.

absolutely MT couldn't agree more.

LMAO @ Thompson and Hislop. Their skill level is exactly what we need at Punt Road.

Infamy do you still think that trading away is the best way for our club.

As MT has said Morton was a good trade but he has his flaws e.g defensive pressure non-existent

I think you need to consider where he's come from to put in a performance like he did today. He did his knee, around 9 months ago and it was his first game back at this level. Many players don't even make it back in that amount of time and he's already got BOG for Coburg 2nds and then put in a 30+ disposal game today by working his butt off. He was rubbish last year, but credit where credit is due, he's clearly worked hard to get back.

I wouldn't say he was clean and decisive with every one of his disposals, he had a couple of grubber kicks. He's clearly above this level, but I wouldn't bring him back against Brisbane. He needs more fitness.

No I don't like us trading so much and have said as much before, however I also understand the logic behind getting him. I do certainly think we overpaid for him.
Although, yet again you are ripping into a player who had a limited preseason due to injury. I think it's a little early in the season to be writing off 22 year olds who aren't fully match fit.

If you understand the logic in trading away draft picks for a supposedly outside player then that is your issue.

Injuries he may have but if he was good enough then he wouldn't be going through Coburg.

All of our trades except Morton have been a complete waste of time and good part of the reason we have been such a rabble of a football club.

How about this for simple logic!! DONT TRADE AWAY DRAFT PICKS IN A REBUILDING PHASE.

Neither Hislop nor Thomson are "outside players", where did you get that from?
I said I understood the logic in getting them to the club but I also said I thought we overpaid for Thomson so I'm hardly sticking up for the decision, just saying I can see both sides. I think a 4th rounder in the draft for Hislop was reasonable but glad it wasn't anything more. We should have used that pick for Thomson if we had to trade, 3rd round was too much.

RICHMOND midfielder Ben Cousins got through yesterday's VFL match unscathed, despite limping to the clubrooms at the 23rd-minute mark of the final term with both knees heavily iced — a precautionary measure, said Tiger officials.

And opponent Jack Watts shone for Casey, later announcing he expected to make his AFL debut in round 12 against Essendon.

Cousins, who has not played since sustaining a hamstring injury in his return game in round one, had 25 disposals for Coburg, working at full pace in 10-minute bursts in the Tigers' 42-point loss to the Scorpions at Coburg City Oval.

Cousins made an impact in the second quarter after marking on the wing, with no direct opponent, and booting to ruckman Troy Simmonds before using his strong endurance to grab a handball and provide some forward momentum.

Tigers coach Jade Rawlings said Cousins' performance warranted a return to AFL level and said it would be discussed during the week. "He was good … he did as much as he could do on a VFL stage," Rawlings said.

"We capped the amount of time that he was supposed to play so that he came out unscathed."

While the match was built up as the Cousins show, it was Melbourne's No. 1 draft pick Watts who shone brighter on the big stage in his first VFL match.

The 18-year-old booted three goals, including two in the second term, and accumulated 16 disposals in a roaming half-forward role. He also kicked the match-winner in the final term.

"It was good to get out and play at a high standard," Watts told The Sunday Age. "There's a big difference between speed and the physicality. It's always more enjoyable to play at a higher standard, it's cleaner footy.

"I was just happy to get a win over a pretty good side. They didn't put any pressure on me before the game, which was really good, and I just went out there to get a kick."

But any chance of a much more rapid AFL debut was put to bed by Watts, who said he was all but pencilled in for a round-12 debut against Essendon.

"I don't think so (making a quicker debut)," he said.

"I've got the program. I want to follow that to a T and hopefully that will lead me in good stead."

Scorpions coach Peter German praised the talented forward's performance.

"Anyone who watched the game today would say that's why he was the No. 1 draft pick," German said.

In a star-studded match that attracted almost 6000 fans — just 5000 less than last year's VFL grand final — Coburg general manager Ryan O'Connor said it was a financial boost having Cousins play for the club.

"If we had attendances like we had today every week, our profits would be double the norm," O'Connor said.

The starting bounce looked like Richmond's regular line-up with Simmonds, Cousins and rising star Trent Cotchin in the middle. Simmonds dominated the ruck with 27 hit-outs, but Cotchin, playing his second VFL match, struggled, according to Rawlings.

"I thought in the second half he started to get his hands on the ball a bit more and used it OK. He had a bit of an illness last night so he struggled a bit," Rawlings said.

In the same match, Melbourne's Michael Newton booted five goals.

Shane Edwards was best on ground for the Tigers, while Kayne Pettifer, on return from a knee reconstruction, also showed glimpses.

It was reported on the news that both clubs received a $800 fine each for the fracas at 3/4 time. The VFL couldn't be bothered going after individual players in the melee as their were too many lol so they just whacked both clubs with a fine each.
