In all honesty doesn't it just anoy the crap out of you..... imagine how big this club could be again IF we turned it around on field!!!
-
That's the point.
We have the numbers after all we were the number 1 team in the 60's and 70's yet Pies and Blues and Bombers have the power. These three clubs have proved they can survive without a strong on field Richmond and that's how they like it as they all know once the sleeping giant awakens a minimum of 60000 at each home game at the G and that includes games against some of the interstate clubs.
To draw parrallel lines it's much like the Liverpool Arsenal Everton Nottingham Forest dominated English club scene in the 70's and 80's and one European trophies while Man Utd underachieved and won a token trophy here and there and had an occassional win against the Liverpool's and such to keep the fans happy. After all Man Utd did get relegated in 1974 a mere 6 years after winning their first European Cup. When they arrived in 1993 they have never looked backed with challenges of Blackburn, Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool falling by the wayside while the red devil current dynasty still endures.
We need to follow that model used at Old Trafford.
Get the team competitive to rise up the ladder.
Play two years of successive finals.
Stability off field and allow coach to be ruthless and make on field decisions with his recruiters and assistants.
Fans will come, members will sign up, won't be seen as tokenism by club to boost coffers.
Crowds will rise. Aura about us will rise. Perceptions about us will change we will be a genuine drawcard.
With that comes money, and power as we will be seen as a money spinner. Win win for RFC and fans and AFL plus our stadia deals.
If the club has done all that right then a premiership dynasty is a mere formality.
In the early 90's all those that despised Man Utd were glad to see they fail. Why?
Because
a) They feared them if they did rise to power.
b) Jealousy of their famous name, world wide fan base.
Now most of those people who laughed back then may still hate them but not as vehemently as they did 20 years ago and in fact have a huge respect for them and even are happy to celebrate their continental success.
Things can change people so can perceptions and auras. The fans are there and that is the foundation. Do it now RFC before the people jump off.

Great post Tuckerbag :clapping
Soccer is a complete different game, though i am warming to it each year.
The method used for Old Trafford can easly be implemented at our club no doubt as well. RFC is the sleeping giant that could grow even bigger if we start winning with young Talented kids. With wins will come more supporters and more money that brings more power.
I beleive RFC can be a stand alone Power club in the AFL if we can pull big crowds loosing imagine what we could pull winning.

Except the AFL is a totally different beast Tuckerbag.
Man U hit the highs when Rupert's Sky money started hitting the PL. They were free to invest that money where they wanted. If Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs for instance had have been the successful team in the early 90's, with a young and marketable team it would have been different. It happened to be Man U and the rest is history.
But whilst in the AFL money is an advantage, because of the salary cap and the draft you can't just power ahead. Look at Collingwood - they got 40,000+ members, a new state-of-the-art training facility etc etc but their list still isn't one of the best because you can't buy players. You could have 60,000 members and fill the 'G every home game and it would guarantee nothing. The two scenarios are worlds apart.

You cant buy players . . . at the moment, but wait until the free player agency comes in! :-\

When the transfer payment of a single player is $40m more than the whole TPP of the AFL it's hard to compare AFL to soccer in terms of $$$.
The above figures represent a missed opportunity for the Club :(. We would've got a number of sponsor friendly high rating Friday night games next year if we had been half-decent and made the finals. Hopefully we now do things right and build a list that puts a successful team on the park in 3-4 years time so we don't miss out on these opportunities again. Our supporter base is incredible. Most clubs would be dead and long gone by now if they had run of outs we have had for 27 years.

Imagine what it must have been like supporting Sth Melbourne before 2005, or what it is like supporting St Kilda or the Bulldogs or Melbourne!! :o

I only caught the end of the news grab on SEN as I was in another room but it said Richmond and Hawthorn have defied the downturn with big increases. I think they were talking about crowds/members.
