Moving on from the Buckley-Malthouse circus, Chocco Royal said today there were 12 candidates in the running for the Richmond job. He didn't mention any names as he's not involved but the 12 roughly are:
Leon Cameron
Adrian Fletcher
Damien Hardwick
Ken Hinkley
Anthony Rock
Justin Leppitsch
Mark Neeld
Jade Rawlings
Alan Richardson
Brad Scott
Peter Sumich
Leigh Tudor
The 12 have got to be weeded down to six for the full-on footy interviews and then a final 3 to face the Board.
Take your pick?

there's a North melb assistant coach in the mix, caught the end of the interview on 3AW the other week didnt know who they were talking to...could be Blakey ???
-
Top 6:
Rawlings
Hardwick
Cameron
Hinkley
Tudor
Richardson
Laidley not considered as I think he'd rather 12 months off
Leppitsch bit stiff but still a bit raw.

mines close to that although Id interchange Cameron for Hardwick as 2nd pick

Peter Sumich
Final 3:
Hardwick, Hinkley, Richardson/Rawlings
Not even sure what I am basing this on other than hearsay. Presumably the board will be able to see so much more than any of us so I'm not bothered with who they choose in the end.

Ta. Wasn't sure of the 12th one. I knew it was someone from North. I'll edit the poll.
-
Hardwick my favourite at the moment - successful at ever club he has been at, hard nosed, tactical and I am good friends with his sister :shh
Hinkley is next cab off the rank for mine. Coached a premiership side, a major part of Geelongs development and sustained success.
Rawlings has impressed me with his honesty and the respect he gives and gets from the players. May lack in experience and tactical nouse but I think if he was surrounded by the right assistants he could become a fantastic coach.
Leppitsch is another hard nosed defender who has been a right hand man to Voss and therefore seen the steps that need to be taken when a new young coach comes to a club. Cut his teeth under Matthews and knows how to win at all cost using defense as a platform to attack.
Scott has trained under Malthouse and played for Matthews. Was reknown for his nasty streak on the ground and would take no rubbish off it. Like Leppitsch has been part of many winning cultures and knows how to create one.
Cameron based completely on what others have reported.

If there was ever a 100-1 chance to get in the finish, he is the one.
Its amazing how people on here judge people they dont know.
Anthony would interview extremely well you might find ;)

Final 6
Hardwick
Hinkley
Sumich
Rawlings
Scott
Richardson
Final 3
Hardwick
Hinkley
Sumich/Rawlings
Pretty simple reasoning for my final 3, they are assistant coaches from the last 3 premierships. Sumich was the midfield coach that developed West Coast's premiership midfield of Judd, Cousins, Kerr & Co. Hinkley is the attacking coach at Geelong, and they are the best in the competition at that. Hardwick is currently one of the midfield coaches of the Hawks who won the most recent premiership, he also has been a defensive coach. Hardwick has success follow him every club he goes to, with premierships at Essendon, Port & Hawthorn. Hardwick seems to have the best credentials of all the applicants, the only knock on him is that he hasn't coached his own side at a lower level.
-
Richardson
Hinkley
Scott
Richardson has been highly rated everywhere he's been.
Hinkley has the Ross Lyon factor about him. The sort of bloke that is unheralded until he wins a premiership and then everyone raves about like they knew all along.
Scott has the kind of determination and mongrel about him that Malthouse did when he first got a coaching gig.
Rawlings has Geischen written all over him. Honest bloke that is a sure bet to run onto the ground at football park if we beat the Crows

Kangaroos, Richmond get down to business
Damian Barrett and Jon Ralph | July 28, 2009 11:40pm
NATHAN Buckley's Pies deal whittled Richmond's coaching race down to a dozen, but it's adamant he wasn't their preferred candidate.
The Pies legend was to meet Richmond at 10am yesterday, but alerted head of football Craig Cameron before his contract was announced.
Richmond's interviews have started, and president Gary March said yesterday the club would keep an open mind about its new coach.
He said while Buckley might have had obvious credentials, the job had been far from his, even if he had been determined to land it.
"He was one of 13 candidates, all of whom are good candidates, and now we have 12," March said. "We are well into the process. There is no real change for us.
"I am not sure he was ever anything other than a candidate -- he was no more highly fancied than anyone else.
"We had never formally spoken to him about his views on coaching, and whether he was the right fit for us. So we will never know.
"We don't even know if he was the right fit for us. He might have been the perfect fit, or he might not have been. So good luck to him and Collingwood, but we will keep working on finding our coach."
Richmond's first round of interviews will be conducted by Cameron, football director Tony Free, club psychologist Jeff Bond, basketball legend Lindsay Gaze and Gemba business consultant Ben Crowe.
Jade Rawlings, Damien Hardwick, Alan Richardson, Leon Cameron, Justin Leppitsch, Ken Hinkley, Brad Scott, Mark Neeld, Peter Sumich, Anthony Rock and Dean Laidley are known to have been asked to take part in interviews.
Hardwick is on the second line of betting behind caretaker Jade Rawlings, while former Roos coach Laidley is the wildcard.
Sportingbet last night had Rawlings at $2 to coach Richmond next year, with Hardwick at $4.50 and Leon Cameron at $6.
March said there was no ceiling on the number of candidates to be interviewed in the second round of the process, which will also involve former players Emmett Dunne and Greg Stafford.
"It might come down to one if we reckon they are the standout candidate, or it could be five or six," March said.
"With St Kilda and other coaching panels, they have said sometimes you don't know until you meet someone and understand they are the right fit for your club."
WHERE TO NEXT?
RICHMOND
The club is this week interviewing 12 candidates, with the panel including basketball legend Lindsay Gaze and business consultant Ben Crowe.
A short-list of four or five will go on to a second interview process in early August, before a third round of interviews involving president Gary March will select the coach.

Coaching contenders short-list
Herald-Sun | July 28, 2009 11:55pm
WITH Nathan Buckley off the market, the shortlist for the Kangaroos and Richmond coaching jobs has tightened.
THE CONTENDERS
Damien Hardwick (Hawthorn)
In the thick of it at both Richmond and the Kangaroos. Was pipped by Matthew Knights for the Essendon job two years back, but would be unlucky not to snare one of the two roles.
Jade Rawlings (Richmond)
Equal favourite with Damien Hardwick at Richmond, but will also be considered by the Kangaroos. Has thrilled the Tigers with his progress in the last six weeks.
Ken Hinkley (Geelong)
Will be interviewed by Richmond in its first round of discussions, and the Kangaroos would be crazy to overlook him. Has strong pedigree and Geelong's intellectual property.
John Longmire (Sydney)
The Roos will surely gauge his interest, but it is not known if he is a contender at Richmond.
He ticks the boxes at North, with his links there strengthening his case.
Leon Cameron (Bulldogs)
Sure to be one of the final contenders at Richmond, with his 84 games in four years at Punt Road doing him no harm
Brad Scott (Collingwood)
Both clubs will look at Scott, one of a number of Pies assistants now aware they have no chance of winning the senior role at Collingwood.
Dean Laidley (Kangaroos)
The former North Melbourne coach will be interviewed by Richmond when he returns from holidays, but it is not known if he is a realistic chance to win the head role.
Alan Richardson (Essendon)
The former Pies development coach is highly rated within the industry, and not just for teaching the young kids. Likely to push hard for the Tigers role.
Other contenders:
Mark Neeld (Collingwood), Justin Leppitsch (Brisbane), Anthony Rock (Kangaroos) and Peter Sumich (West Coast) all have appointments to be interviewed by Richmond's selection panel.

This list would have been whittled down by Friday - isnt that the case? I think I read somewhere itll be down to the last 5 or so.
-
Hinkey
Hardwick
Cameron
Rawlings
They're top 4 for mine but I'm not going to say "if they get anyone else it's a joke" because lets be honest, we are looking from the outside in.
-
Can never understand betting on prospective coaches.
How legal would it be for Richmond to agree to say Leon Cameron and load up on the clubs finances on $6 - 1? Appoint him on a 1 year deal?
Times finances by 6 and then start again.
Gambling for the sake of it.
Before we know it we'll be gambling on the draft, fixture, and who knows the color of Ploughs skin in 10 years..

Because you can only get on for small amounts. They are markets for the sake of a market, nobody will get rich betting on a coaches market, because the sportsbook will not let you on for enough.
-
Fletcher and Tudor not mentioned. Which one isn't a candidate? Tudor? Fletcher IIRC said he was putting his hand up a few weeks ago.
-
as predicted bucks was never going to join the Tigers.
Now as sure as i was of that im equally sure that Rawlings will be made our coach.
They have already made up their mind people
-
Daniel...dont know if they have already made up their minds...but so far Jade has impressed...whether it is just the honeymoon or a true renaissance only time will tell...
-
You just hope that with all candidates including Jade going through a heavily scruitinized interview process that if Jade is chosen it is because he is the best candidate. So it won't be a Geisch scenario where he was chosen simply on win/loss ratio in the last 5 games of the season and no one else was even considered.
-
3aw discussion tonight between Mike and Healy:
* Healy reckons Jade is virtually over the line or a "poofteenth" away if that.
* Mike replied I wouldn't have Jade across the line yet. A fair bit of water to go under the bridge. He wouldn't want to lose to melbourne this week.
* Whispers says Alan Richardson is Rawlings greatest challenger for the Richmond gig.
* Mike would have Hardwick at the top of his list. Based on being at 3 successful clubs and a hard tough nut as a player. Hinkley should be looked at as well based on similar principles (being at successful clubs).

Now con Jade has impressed with wins against the Eagles, Bombers , Possibly Demons and Eagles. We ------ draw against a hack like North. Great coaching that was.
ome back and talk to me when he has wins against the elite of the comp.
Wallet could NEVER win against top opposition and this bloke is heading down the same path.
If he hired on the back of some wins against the lower clubs of the comp then expect another 10 years of being near the bottom.
Add to that if some think Mclovin, Patterson, Hislop and Edwards are going to win you a flaf then again keep taking those pills because you are kidding yourself.
Bux is a smart operator and he knew our listis pathetic which lets be honest it is.
Rawlings is not the man to do this. The club will once again interview about 10 others only to appoint Jade.
As i have said the decision has been made and its him by the length of the Flemington straight.
Edited for avoiding the swear filter again

Thats a pretty good point. Only the bombers could be considered a win against non-tanking opposition.
If he makes it through the process I don't mind but all these whispers about so-and-so being over the line and this person second when we are a long way from the end of our process is a bit worrying.
Viva la process.
-
Trying not to be a know all! because that I am not - wished others realised they weren't either :rollin
Based on observations without knowing any of the individuals I picked.
Hardwick succes at other clubs and a hard nut would demand respect.
Cameron - Seems to have done a decent apprenticeship and liked the way he played when he was with us.
Rawlings - Can't expect massive improvements straight away but more to like about our game since he has been in charge. They seem to be getting this look sideways and back 'first option' out of the game.

According to the Age it's 12 plus Laidley. So 13 candidates in total. Laidley is automatically through to the second phase apparently.
Richmond, which began interviewing prospective coaches with the Bulldogs assistant and former Richmond player Leon Cameron last Friday, is set to interview 11 more candidates over the next three days.
While Buckley was one name the Tigers had to remove from their list of possibles, Mick Malthouse was another. Had Collingwood's announcement been a little different yesterday the Tigers would have sought to speak to Malthouse.
As it is, the Richmond panel will proceed with interviews of candidates including Damien Hardwick, Alan Richardson, Mark Neeld, Brad Scott, Peter Sumich, Ken Hinkley and Jade Rawlings. Brisbane Lions assistant coach Justin Leppitsch, who will be in Melbourne for the Lions' MCG game on Saturday, will be interviewed on Friday.
Former North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley is expected to join the process in the second stage after he has returned from his US trip next week.

The knock on Laidley is that he supposedly doesnt prepare his team as well as he should during the week but hes a fantastic match day coach. One day there may come a time when someone prepares the team during the week and the match day coach rocks up and coaches the game. Im not for this but for the Rawlings supporters would they like to see Rawlings coach the week preparation and Laidley coach the game? Could this ever work?
-
I don't think having two chiefs spliting control of the side would work. In that scenario Laidley would been seen as the senior coach being matchday coach and Rawlings seen as just an assistant during the week. I would reckon Laidley would be more suited to a opposition analyst role. Apparently tactically very astute.
-
No to Laidley! I don't care if he can see onto the future on game days, no more rejects from other clubs! That goes for trade week, draft day and picking a coach. He had a go and came up short at the Kangas.
Lets get somebody new and untried and with fresh ideas.
Allan Richardson is my pick. Heard some relly good things about this bloke.
-
3aw said tonight Leppitsch is in the running for the Richmond job. Voss' primary assistant coach. In charge of the Lions' defensive side and opposition analyst. Lethal said tonight Leppitsch has done a really good job at Brisbane and if Lethal was to ever coach again he said he would have a primary assistant coach for sure.
-
Harwick by a mile
Had him equal with Buckley
-
The process is to long. The first round should have been finished. North will try and cherry pick the best candidate. That means we need to move quicker and get down to last 4 or 5 asap.
-
The first round will be finished by the end of tomorrow or early next week which is the start of August. The Club wants a coach selected by early September so there's about a month to go which isn't that long given the importance of the decision. We had first go at sorting through all the available candidates as well while North was on hands and knees begging Bucks. At least the applicants for the Richmond job know they won't be second choice.
-
If we want Hardwick then I suggest we quicken the process

I hardly see how an offer to be senior coach in 3 years time is better than one for next season
The Hawks & Saints didn't rush their appointments and didn't worry about someone getting their man
They got it right, so as long as we don't cut corners, we should too
Port have no money anyway

Rex Hunt last night before starting to commentate the game between roos and blues said that hed heard that Hardwick was in prime position.
