12 candidates in the running for the Richmond job

According to the Age it's 12 plus Laidley. So 13 candidates in total. Laidley is automatically through to the second phase apparently.

Richmond, which began interviewing prospective coaches with the Bulldogs assistant and former Richmond player Leon Cameron last Friday, is set to interview 11 more candidates over the next three days.

While Buckley was one name the Tigers had to remove from their list of possibles, Mick Malthouse was another. Had Collingwood's announcement been a little different yesterday the Tigers would have sought to speak to Malthouse.

As it is, the Richmond panel will proceed with interviews of candidates including Damien Hardwick, Alan Richardson, Mark Neeld, Brad Scott, Peter Sumich, Ken Hinkley and Jade Rawlings. Brisbane Lions assistant coach Justin Leppitsch, who will be in Melbourne for the Lions' MCG game on Saturday, will be interviewed on Friday.

Former North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley is expected to join the process in the second stage after he has returned from his US trip next week.

The knock on Laidley is that he supposedly doesnt prepare his team as well as he should during the week but hes a fantastic match day coach. One day there may come a time when someone prepares the team during the week and the match day coach rocks up and coaches the game. Im not for this but for the Rawlings supporters would they like to see Rawlings coach the week preparation and Laidley coach the game? Could this ever work?

I don't think having two chiefs spliting control of the side would work. In that scenario Laidley would been seen as the senior coach being matchday coach and Rawlings seen as just an assistant during the week. I would reckon Laidley would be more suited to a opposition analyst role. Apparently tactically very astute.

No to Laidley! I don't care if he can see onto the future on game days, no more rejects from other clubs! That goes for trade week, draft day and picking a coach. He had a go and came up short at the Kangas.
Lets get somebody new and untried and with fresh ideas.

3aw said tonight Leppitsch is in the running for the Richmond job. Voss' primary assistant coach. In charge of the Lions' defensive side and opposition analyst. Lethal said tonight Leppitsch has done a really good job at Brisbane and if Lethal was to ever coach again he said he would have a primary assistant coach for sure.

The process is to long. The first round should have been finished. North will try and cherry pick the best candidate. That means we need to move quicker and get down to last 4 or 5 asap.

The first round will be finished by the end of tomorrow or early next week which is the start of August. The Club wants a coach selected by early September so there's about a month to go which isn't that long given the importance of the decision. We had first go at sorting through all the available candidates as well while North was on hands and knees begging Bucks. At least the applicants for the Richmond job know they won't be second choice.

I hardly see how an offer to be senior coach in 3 years time is better than one for next season
The Hawks & Saints didn't rush their appointments and didn't worry about someone getting their man
They got it right, so as long as we don't cut corners, we should too
