Best key defender: Alex Rance; 17 matches; 19 goals conceded; 1.15 goals conceded every 120 minutes
The 25-year-old has emerged as the game's best key defender this season and an All Australian lock. Shuts down the AFL's best, such as Lance Franklin, and attacks when he can, averaging 3.1 rebound 50s. Of the 78 contests Rance has been engaged in, he has lost only 15. Appears settled since signing a new four-year deal with the Tigers.
Best mid/small defender: Jake Batchelor; 17 matches; 16 goals conceded; 1.14 goals conceded every 120 minutes
Viewed as a developing player at the start of this season, Batchelor has become a key cog in the Tigers' back six as a third tall defender. Somewhat of an unsung hero, his athletic ability means he matches up on difficult players to contain, such as Giant Cam McCarthy, who he held goalless in round 14. He doesn't win as many offensive possessions as he could, but he is doing the job defensively.

Batchelor is not a "sexy" footballer , but he is part of the back six which has been our strength all year.
Stats say he is getting the job done , would be on minimal coin too.

This is focusing on his ability to keep a forward goalless(or as close to) and I think most can see he is a very solid defender.

I am keeping my line on Batch as I did with Morris, I hope I am proved wrong with Batch but to date I think it's level. I was right about Morris and I was right for 9 years about Edwards!! I alos kept the line that I believed Hampson would deliver and he did, pity about his injury.

I'm not a fan of Batch but credit where credit is due, he has been pretty good the last month. But tonight he was putrid. Bad match up playing him on Betts. Why not Conca, Vlastuin, Hunt or even Newman??
He didn't know whether to watch the ball or Eddie!
It wasn't the move that cost us the game but it sure didn't help....

Batchelor is a fringe player imv at best though the selection panel has seen something in him where he has been able to play majority of the season. There has been players who have given less this year though continue to get picked so I'm not suprised he hasn't been dropped.
as for playing small, it's means exactly how it's read.
Batch is 188 cm taking on Betts who is 173 cm and a pure silk small forward.
Tell me who would have done a better job on Betts given the entire team was poor and also who is a better small fwd than betts in the comp?

I would have tried floss on Betts, but he had an average game too, so who knows. I rate Motlop over Betts for overall performance, not just as a forward. Batch didn't even chase him last night, that is what was disappointing, in one passage of play he sort of casually jogged after him and put an arm out as a tackle...gee, that's not acceptable.

Floss is a bloody good player, and putting him on Betts may have curbed Betts influence though the rest of our team was just crap and would of leaked goals from wherever Floss came from.
I'm not sold on Batchelor either though I still believe we can make some solid improvement in our defense either with picking up another quality defender in the off season or upgrading from our reserves though even there it is slim pickings.
Perhaps once these Corey Ellis types come back it my help to sure up parts of our back line if not giving us better kicking and run from defense.
