Title: Note to our recruiters: Size does matter!
Post by: mightytiges on September 06, 2009, 12:38:57 AM
When Hardwick was asked by the journos at his first media conference about what gameplan he wanted to implement at Punt Rd he replied it was one that would stand up in finals and his players would have to have the ability to play that style.

No surprise but based on the games so far this weekend finals footy hasn't changed. Bigger bodies across the ground don't get smaller during a final and finals pressure means having big targets up forward to kick long are vital as an 'out' when time and space is few and far between.

Note to our recruiters: Size does matter! Solid bodied mids and KPPs who will fill out please.

It's all very well to say our players don't put on muscle compared to other clubs and that's true to a degree but even the best strength and conditioning staff can't turn small sticks into tree trunks. As a side and list we are too small and get pushed aside far too easily. Also the doggies mosquito fleet gameplan is once again being shown up as flawed to win finals.

Yes please

So sick of watching Richmond get "monstered" during games.

It always looks like boys vs men.

Yep sadly  :(

The Saints are another big side (far more mature as well to be fair). Apart from Farren Ray the rest mostly have solid bodies. A strong spine as well. The fundamentals of footy don't really change despite the game evolving all the time.

Talking about Farren Ray, has improved out of sight this year.
His marking over head is real good

With Essendons and Collingwood's decision to go in with 1 ruckmen and get found out, big men have just doubelled there currency.

No doubt that Butcher will go to Melbourne with Tom Scully now.

Would be the shortest bet in history. But anything can happen.

I'd love Trengove but think if somehow Butcher was over looked by Melbourne it'd be a big win.

Butcher's overall form this year hasn't been near last year's although he's still kicked plenty of goals (he's been affected by injury all year apparently). Maybe a Mitch Clark scenario. Start the year the favoured #1 pick and then slips down the order a touch. Butcher was well beaten yesterday and held goal-less. Melbourne may see Trengove as the safer option on current form and go for two mids with picks 1 and 2.

was thinking same as in reference to Mitch clark and to a lesser extent franklin and how his stocks went down some with ordinary carnival....a familiar bell tolls ::)...hope our recruiters are a little more balanced and objective than those with their finger on the trigger earlier on

Unfortunately the same could be said of Jay Schulz too. The year before he was eligible he was a #1 pick contender yet slipped down the order the next year. I'm sure he's not alone there either.

You did see the word "unfortunately" in my post didn't you?
For someone with such a high opinion of themself and their "success", you have a very bad grasp on basic reading comprehension.

Would love to see a Daniel Rich type of body come into the club, first year and look at him, amazing.

You're memory may be better than mine Infamy but I always thought Goddard and Wells were the clear top 2 that year in pre-draft talk. Brennan and Salopek probably the next 2.

At draft time yes, the year before when people started doing preliminary rankings of the U18 players for the year, Schulz was considered a #1 pick contender. He was massively underaged compared to the others and had shown quite a bit the year before as a kpp. He never had the same impact in the year he was eligible to be drafted, but was still taken high based off his reputation from the year before. Similar to the Clarke example used where he was considered a monty for the #1 pick in the preseason.

Schulzs must be traded by Richmond to save the lads football career.
He will never produce any form for the Richmond football club as his mind has been damaged by poor development.
for him to produce anything he is capable of producing,  he needs a fresh start at another club.
Only then he can be fully judged.  He dont have his heart in the game at present & is not enjoying football & wants out.

Fair enough Infamy. 2002 was one of the poorest draft years as well which didn't help.

One of the knocks on Clark was his temperament was questioned and also a fear of the go home factor. Buddy also had the same question marks about him too the year before.

It's hard to trade someone with zilch trade value. He's had 7 years in the system to produce and cement a spot in the side (2 years too many) and apart from that 6 goal haul in 2004 and a few good games in defence in 2008 he has continually gone missing. Just doesn't have the workrate and smarts needed for AFL.

Agreed it was a shocker, look at who went in that draft and you're seriously struggling to find any real quality players other than Goddard. Plenty of misses in the Top 10 and not many hits afterwards either.

I agree, but its not just his body size. He can play too.
