I think it has generally come down to money in the past Taz - in that we haven't had enough of it to fill all our rookie spots.  Not sure what we'll do this year - given the cleanout we might fill them and rely on the 'shear weight of numbers' theory.

We will be filling all rookie spots in 2010  :thumbsup

Hardwick made that point at the Tommy Hafey Club function thing last Wednesday night

Also i think going by memory that international rookies are considered outside the regular rookie list, so i dont think we count Jamie O'Reilly.
That being the case we have a further 5 additions to make. :)

Im hoping one of these is our psd selection. I still feel McGinty has lots of scope for improvement. Has only played the game for 18 months. Im hoping he is picked by us as our PSD or a rookie selection  :cheers

Tigers continue high player turnover with rookie picks
Jon Ralph From: Herald Sun November 30, 2009

RICHMOND has confirmed it will take an untried youngster in the pre-season draft on December 15, but the club is equally optimistic about the four selections it will take later in the draft.

The Tigers have created room on their list for four more rookie selections, with the five new picks to take to 14 the number of players turned over this year.

It is a staggering number but coach Damien Hardwick has decided he will not waste even one year before pruning the list heavily.

The Tigers have one of only two live picks in the pre-season draft, with Melbourne (Joel Macdonald), Sydney Swans (Daniel Bradshaw) and Fremantle (Adam McPhee) all committed to experienced players.

Essendon yesterday confirmed it would take one selection to replace utility McPhee, who left the club without any compensation.

Richmond has several prospective recruits already training at the club and will invite several more players to train.

Richmond used seven selections at Thursday's national draft and elevated rookies Andrew Browne and Robin Nahas.

In recent years the Tigers' 15th placing would have given them the second pick in the rookie draft, but this year the Gold Coast has the first five selections.

Good news for us if GC17 takes mostly older recycled players with their 5 rookie picks.....

the Gold Coast's recruiting supremo, Scott Clayton, also confirmed yesterday that the new team would take seasoned players as rookies in the rookie draft on December 15 - meaning that senior players would be warehoused next season as Gold Coast VFL players, before playing AFL in 2011.

The Gold Coast has the first five selections in the rookie draft and, in theory, could use all of them on delisted players.

In the upcoming rookie draft, the Gold Coast can take two mature-age rookies (over 23), and three players from other clubs under 23. It is expected to select its allotted two mature rookies.

Gold Coast looks to grab another Ablett - Luke
December 10, 2009

THE Gold Coast has spoken to three delisted AFL players - Luke Ablett, Robert Shirley and Daniel Harris - about joining the club as mature-age recruits who will play with the fledgling club's VFL team next year and then in the AFL in 2011.

While Luke Ablett's name is the most interesting to outsiders, given that the former Sydney player is a cousin of Nathan and Gary Ablett, the new club is also considering former Adelaide tagger Shirley, and Harris, the inside midfielder who found himself out of favour at Arden Street.

The Gold Coast wants to sign players with AFL experience immediately and is expected to draft at least one mature-age rookie - a player aged over 23 who has been on a club list - in Tuesday's rookie draft, in which the new club has the first five choices. Ablett, Shirley and Harris, thus, are vying for spots on the list (the Gold Coast can pick a maximum of two mature rookies), though another club also could pick them up in the pre-season draft (before the Gold Coast) or with subsequent selections.

The Gold Coast is expected to draft two or three players who have been on an AFL list. In addition to mature rookies, it can select other seasoned players who are 23 and under, many of whom will be picked in the rookie draft. It wants these players to provide the strong bodies to support an outstanding collection of young talent in 2011.

...........

Richmond, meanwhile, plans to draft Graham Polak, whom it dropped off the list, as a mature-age rookie. Polak made it back to play senior football late in 2009 after suffering serious head injuries in 2008.

Every club can select up to two mature-age rookies, in addition to regular rookie-list players. Tuesday's rookie draft is immediately after the pre-season draft for uncontracted and delisted players, and is effectively now a continuation of that draft.

Yeah there is training sessions on Mondays but not sure if all those ring-ins will still be training with us. I'd take a guess whoever is going pick 2 in the PSD will still be as they would know by then if we will be picking them up given Melbourne has said it is selecting Joel McDonald. We have the first live pick.

I don't know who is favourite. Grimes was just a guess as I don't think he will last to our first rookie pick.

This is what they think on the AFL page..

RICHMOND
Pre-season selections: 1 (2)
Rookie selections: 6 (7, 23, 38, 51, 62, 70)
Locked in: Jamie O'Reilly - international
Needs: The Tigers are likely to target players across each position, although a focus could be on tall and mid-sized defender/forwards. Players with strong kicking skills will also be a focus.
In their sights: Youngsters Dylan Grimes and Robbie Hicks are believed to be serious contenders for the Tigers' second pick in the pre-season draft, and could also be claimed in the rookie draft. Eastern's Jayden Cass and Josh Free, the son of former Richmond skipper Tony, are also in the rookie mix. Expect big man Graham Polak to be redrafted as a rookie.

His kicking for goal certainly looks good, as does his technique
Haven't seen him play live though so can't really judge his field kicking

I would be tempted to take Grimes in the PSD and then Majak at first pick in the Rookie draft.

I thought i had seen Hunt's name alongside one of their rookie draft picks in the lists going about. The territory is a gold coast priority pick zone for a few years, but what that actually means?
From the afl website;
Quote
Patrick joins the club as a Northern Territory priority pick, which enables the Gold Coast to keep their first five selections in Tuesday’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/88022/default.aspx

So if that is correct the selection of Hunt has not even used up a rookie draft pick for them.

OK, looking at this article on the AFL website,
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/88007/default.aspx
a number of clubs have rookie picks listed as locked in (nsw scholarships international etc) but no mention of Hunt been locked in as a selection for the Gold Coast, so it seems they do still have 5 rookie picks.

Former Roo Daniel Harris has signed a two-year deal with the Gold Coast and they will pick him up in the rookie draft.

Just as an aside Harris had trained with VFL club Coburg in recent weeks - with the view to become a playing assistant coach if he wasn't redrafted.

Discarded Crow Robert Shirley, 29, seems certain to cash in his second chance with the Gold Coast.

The 151-game midfield stopper is understood to be one of at least two mature-age players the Gold Coast will take with their first five picks in the rookie draft this week.

It is understood the Gold Coast wants players with AFL experience who can step into senior football.

We're going with a young kid in the PSD according to Paul Roos...

Richmond have not nominated who they are after, but the club is widely expected to stick with a policy of selecting youth.

''You never absolutely know what is going to happen until it's over,'' Roos said yesterday. ''There is only one live pick before us with Melbourne taking Joel and Freo [taking] Adam McPhee, so it's really just Richmond, who say they are taking a young kid.

Immediately following the pre-season draft, the clubs will take part in the rookie draft, where the Swans have up to eight selections.

Among those picks they will take Irishman Chris McKaigue, and NSW scholarship holder Nathan Gordon, with another two talented youngsters, Sam Crichton and Dylan McNeil, also tipped to be selected.
