Title: Your trade week expectations?
Post by: one-eyed on October 05, 2011, 11:19:02 PM
Trade week is now close at hand (it starts on Monday). What are your expectations for the trade period?

What would be a reasonable and realistic trade week for us?

My expectation was to bring in a ruckmen with experience which should mean an upgrade. I haven't seen much of Ivan Maric but by what everyone is saying his pretty much a sure thing to come to us so hopefully he is what we are looking for.

A bonus would be added depth anywhere across the board as long as we don't over pay for anyone.

No Big Fishes just more average types to come in and try and get the club to the finals. We wont do anything decent in terms of the u17 draft either. Richmond will fail to make hard decisions and it will be the start of real pressure on Hardwick. His best solution is to go younger again but they wont do it. Malthouse will be in the van for the 2013 coaching job by about round 14.

Overall we'll be screaming Duds, Duds and more Duds next week. Diggler will go back onto the forums and call for the early booking season for the Rosebud Caravan Park. It will all go well  ;D

My guess:

Nason, Mcguane, Graham traded
Moore retired
Gourdis, Taylor, Farmer delisted

In: Maric, Bellchambers

Expect to be underwhelmed

no mini draft picks
no pre-listed player trades
overpay for f/s morris
a few duds out
a few speculative duds in
a flakey range of draft picks left at the end of the week

 :gotigers
 :sleep

I'll fill the void till he logs on. :lol :rollin :lol

Give up Pick 14 for Maric.
Trade Foley get Pick 5 from GWS and give that up for Tyson Goldsack.
Continue our good relations with Port in terms of trading and use our fourth rounder for Mitch Banner.

Trade Morton Nason and McGuane to GWS for Josh Fraser as back up to Maric.

All these blokes coming will be on good coin at over 300K a season and will be signed for a minimum of 3 years.

Deledio will be asked to take a pay cut due to salary cap restrictions.

Dean Bailey will then reneg on his agreement with Adelaide and come to us for 200K a season all in all while Malthouse has a change of heart and decides to join Carlton as head of football operations
which is why we are where are we and will be for another 30 years. :help

If we are going to grow miserable and bitter because of old age we may as well have this forum to keep us spritely and youthful, reminding us of when we ruled the world. :cheers

hmm trade week. to be honest not a lot. i dont think we are in a position to participate in the mini draft.
id expect us to chase after two  players ranging from good to elite in the nd with picks 14 and 35ish.
to be honest  id rather be trading out than trading in. i think we can do something similar to last yr where we get a couple of mature types in the psd and do a player for player swap.i think we can pick up some mature players psd and late nd. with maybe a player for player swap.
unlike most i dont think when trading we have to get gun footballers just upgrades on who we delist and trade out. if we work the nd right we will get our quality there.

i dont think we are in a position to participate in the mini draft.

The mini-draft thing really favours the already strong teams. The ones that have a core of desirable players and can afford to release a perceived very good player to get a young fella who by all reports will be elite. Either that or you are the GC who has more good draft picks than they know what to do with.

The teams like us, who could really do with an O'Meara or Crouch cannot get the deal done because we cannot afford to compete. For us to give up one of our very good players would just be crazy because we don't have many.

Hey. Didn't Geelong do well out of the Ablett trade. Not only were they handsomely compensated, they also won the Grand Final anyway without him. Well played boys.  :thumbsup

Yes it what disturbed me the most about this whole compromised draft thing, the strong teams were the only beneficiaries apart from the new teams, those struggling got doubly shafted.  They lose out on decent picks and don't have trade currency to get into the good stuff without cutting off their own balls.

I just hope we trade out Jackson.

As long as we do that I don't care if we trade Martin, Deledio, Cotchin and Riewoldt for Leon Davis.

So therefore by that rationale Big Cho you are saying that we should trade Jackson, Martin, Deledio, Cotchin and Riewoldt for Leon Davis?  ;D Crikey that sort of trade would probably even bring Mick back to coaching the Pies. Why don't you email the club and see if they'll let it fly. And after you've sent the email, expect not only a steaming pile of poo on your doorstep, but also a selection of forum moderators and tiger tragic's knocking on your door to present you with an involuntary commitment order.  ;D

So what would be the dumbest possible trade we could do?
Martin for Mark Blake?  Oooh we need another hack ruckman who cant run cant tackle cant kick.
Cotch for Luke Power maybe, talk about cigar butt recruiting.
Maybe put Old Monkhurst on the rookie list :)
What are the chances?

But seriously I hope we develop young players and hardly recruit any recycled players, we're not in top up mode.  If we do then its curtains for Hardwick, it would say to me the "No Shortcuts" slogan would be just that a slogan and nothing more.

In all honesty this years Draft could be classed as a "Leap year Draft" meaning in 3 years time we won't even realize we missed it.
IMO this season creates a great opportunity to add some maturity to our list rather than youth. It is a raffle from pick 4 and beyond and seriously if we have done our home work our 3rd roun pick and beyond could easily be a better player than many first and second rond pick of other clubs! I the opportunity arises for us to secure mature (21-25yo) A to B- grade players with our first and second round picks then we should jump at it! We will have our skeptics trading first round picks but in the longer run I believe this is the year to take the punt....

Call me a skeptic then, Reiwoldt came with a pick in the low teens, I'd rather a 1st year Reiwoldt than a 4th year middling player that another club doesn't want that much.  Geelong went the way of youth and building a list by mostly drafting not recruiting.  We have to build an excellent player development culture combined with a good drafting system.  I've never heard of a good side being made on trades except in Rugby League or Soccer where the system demands it.  The AFL draft system just doesn't allow movement of enough players so you can buy a team.  If it did Carlton would be top 2 by now.

Draft and Develop.
Draft and Develop.

Balmy said on SEN the other day about how a few players (Trent West one of them) had been in their system for years (4 for one) with hardly a game but they still rated them and they were a result of a positive outlook and a good development system.  Unfortunately during Wallaces time our recruiting was broken for the first 2 years and our development really didnt seem to work either.  Though thats hard to tell as maybe the players we recruited achieved their maximum, but various articles have said how development was underfunded too.
