Welcome Matty
-
Matthew ARNOT (Oakleigh Chargers)
DOB: 21/10/93. Ht: 180cm. Wt: 82kg.
Pos: Small midfielder.
"Matt always get the best out of himself and is a really good kid. A bit like Mitch Wooffindin, there are a few things that may hold him back from being able to make the jump to the next level but he has plenty of good attributes as an inside midfielder." - Oakleigh Chargers region manager Mark Smart
Vic Metro representative 2011.
-
This bloke is solidly put together
-
Geez only 180cm. Yet another one ::)
-
I just found this on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKYyqMNxXcs
-
that makes two blokes who are built ready to go, if they're good enough
-
Gee whiz
-
He is built like Arnot Schwarzenegger, he will be fine. Curious to know what the knocks are on him though and if they can be addressed.
-
gee whiz :huh
-
Go Biscuit!!
-
Not sure about this pick, kid looks o.k and if he can play his size won't matter but I think we would have been better off with a tall back like Frost. WTF happened to Frost anyway? Touted to go anywhere between 15 and 30!
-
At least we didn't waste thi spick on Adam Maric ;D
-
this guy is an effing tank :clapping

Some video here. He's aggressive :thumbsup
-
“Matthew is an ultimate competitor who plays with aggression and thrives on the physical contact,” Richmond Recruiting Manager Francis Jackson said.
“He is a good clearance player, who is creative with his hands and has good lateral movement. He also is a neat kick, has a very strong work rate and pushes himself to exhaustion.
“We are pleased to add Matthew to our list and have no doubt he will leave no stone unturned to being the best AFL player he can be.”
wayne posted the link above :thumbsup
-
at least we are no longer picking skinny biatches
-
Dimma is turning the playing group into an army of mini-Dimmas.
-
i love the look of this kid, hard tough and got great skills
see ya later dan jackson
-
What a hard nut.. I'm most excited by this pick.
-
See ya later Greg White
-
see ya later dan jackson
Thats what I was thinking as well.
-
Reminds me a little of another number 9 who eventually came across to the Tigers...
-
Seems like an astute choice, tough, hard great kick
-
Gee whiz.
-
Gee whiz.
racking up?
-
Kid is a tank.
gee whiz ;D
-
two best things off that highlights package were how hard he hits the packs and he kicking to leading forwards. If he has the tank reckon he could be alright.
-
My favourite is at 0:43 of the highlights package. He doesn't really tackle the bloke, he pushes him over, keeps the ball in, then cleans up the second guy. The whole time just tying the play up until he can force a stoppage (boundary) or his teammates arrive. Even the first shot of him getting the ball from a hit out and some nice stepping. Going to be rolling on the floor crying and laughing for days if he can replace Jackson.

From a Essendon/Port Melbourne fan on BF:
You better get excited Tigers fans, you just picked up another 'Port Melbourne' gun (to go alone with Robbie Nahas)!
Matthew Arnot known to Borough supporters as 'Biscuit' is an Oakleigh Chargers player who played one game for Port this year as 23rd man.
... and for the kid this wasn't an ordinary game.
This was him playing in the undefeated Port Melbourne side.
It was roughly Port's 11th win in a row at that stage... and away against the three time reigning premier North Ballarat.
He was 'only' meant to have a bit role (like all TAC Cup players that play as 23rd man), but the Borough lost ex-AFL midfielder Adam Bentick and (this year's Grand Final BOG) tough-nut midfielder Toby Pinwall before half-time.
With Port up by just 2 goals and those quality players down, we supporters were nervous.
However, Gary Ayres rolled the dice, threw Biscuit (Arnot) in the middle... and the kid not only did the job, but starred! :o - we would end up winning by 10 goals (and beating the Roosters on their turf for the 1st time in 6 years!)
Again... that is against the 3 time reigning premier, playing in a team that would end up completing the season undefeated.
I'm calling it... congratulations Richmond... you found the hidden diamond in the draft :thumbsup

Really really like the look of this kid.
Your not going to find a skillful tall or a gut running midfielder with elite kicking skills at 55.
Picking a guy that loves a contest and puts his body on the line and has a dip with a genuinely solid frame is really clever IMO.
The list is coming together really nicely.
Nothing beats a player that loves a bit of contact, mark my words he'll be loved by Tiger fans in a few years.
*Compare this pick to a highly skilled Troy Taylor, with more baggage then Paris Hilton. This is a really really good pick.
-

I have a feeling that 5 years from now, biscuit will be a prime example of a winning late round pick. Encouraging to see the boys behind the scenes are pulling their heads in. Hopefully time will prove them right
-
That kicking efficiency average is a concern. Hopefully the sppedof the game at AFL level don't see it drop any further.
-
Good tackling stat.
-
Good Luck to him for a long career at Richmond

I read this last night, but sporting pulse shows all duck eggs for his stats in his one VFL game. not sure if that is because they havn't been put up or he didnt touch the ball?

They don't do disposals for VFL on sportingpulse

Holy crap!! What a highlights package. :o Love the play at 3:22 where he goes in for the hard ball, misses it but has the presence of mind to follow up with a ripper shepherd to get his teammate in the clear! Looks like he could be a real gem.
-
I'd rather have this kid in the team than some of our supposed leadership type players. Arnot seems to have a fair dinkum crack and if he can kick the ball properly he should become a good player.
-
They don't do disposals for VFL on sportingpulse
cheers davey, thats strange as they have the table for it, but looking at other players , yeah, no disposal stats.
-
Pure footballer. After sleeping on it I'm still stoked to get this bloke. I actually feel kind of embarrassed thinking "umm.. Who? Uh oh :banghead" when I saw his name pop up on the telly.
No-homo man-crush. Hope he can translate into AFL footy.
-
Will be up against it. Be a bonus if he works out.

Not sure if this has been suggested allready but I was thinking that his nickname could just be 'Arnie.'
As an abbreviation of his last name and an illusion to the Governor of California who shares a similar frame.

Hands down the most impressive introductions of a draftee I have seen :clapping This kid really has his head screwed on right, I hope he sticks to what he said and manages to break into the starting side, would be fantastic to see him smashing through the packs.
Loved it how his nickname was brought up, told Jack that 'Crumpet' juse wasn't going to happen :shh :rollin

“I’ve spoken to Damien and he said, ‘I want you to be exactly like me’, so, fair enough . . . I might get a few lessons from him,” Arnot told ‘Roar Vision’.
“I’ll just play my natural style, but, obviously, I’ll develop, not only as a footballer, but as a human being . . . that’s the key to it.”
“I’m a bigger-framed type of midfielder, probably hard-hitting , a lot of tackles, a lot of bumps . . . all the hard stuff that the Richmond faithful should like,” he said.
“If I can string a few games together, it would be great to work with people like Deledio and Newman and, in the midfield, ‘Dusty’ and all those boys . . .
“I’m just glad to be given the opportunity to represent myself and represent the Club. I know that being AFL football, you just can’t walk into the ranks - you’ve got to work your way up and that’s just something I look forward to.
“At this point, I’ll just take it one step at a time and that’s the key - you don’t get too ahead of yourself . . .”

Well MT why don't we get a bit more granular and call him "Adora Cream Wafer" or "Scotch Finger". Its a shame he isn't a Red Head as "Ginger Nut" would be perfect but I think we already have one of those. ;D

There seems to be lengthy vids for most if not all of our draft picks.
-
What did we all think of Arnot's game last night?
With just 42% gametime (subbed on after half-time) he had ...
Disposals: 9 .... (6 contested)
Kicks: 3
Handballs: 6
Efficiency: 89% .... best Tiger on the night
Marks: 1
Tackles: 1
Clearances: 3
Clangers: 1
Inside 50: 1
Rebound50: 1
-
Thought he was good but needs to build the tank
Couple of times needed to put in the big chase as opponents ran off him but he didn't have the tank to do it
-
Fumbled a few times at cticial points but looked good I thought
-
thought he was very good, will get a game sooner rather than later

Arnot looks like his endurance has improved as well. Third in the run around Princes Park a week or so ago and today leading a group with Titch Edwards in it.

To early to tell
Has to play at least 1 senior game before we make a call ;D
BTW I reckon he will make it :thumbsup

I've made a call about Matthew Arnott and I'm prepared to put my arse on the line and cop it if I'm wrong. I make the big calls early and I always end up right.

High praise for Arnie from Dimma and Cotch after the North game last night. Impressed with his contested work in close. The ability of us to gain AFL-standard footballers from picks in the 30s & 40s of the draft will be a sign our player development is finally on the improve and the increased investment in that area by the Club is starting to pay off.
-
IMO there is not enough room for Arnot and Tuck and Jackson in the same side....so who goes :shh
-

tough decision..
-
Needs to kick the thing more
His first thought last night was handball and som of them were poor choices
But having said that he certainly didn't take any backward steps at any contest
-
Still early days for arnot, 1k 7h ...hopefully if he can build on this we have a player, way off senior side just now though
-
IMO there is not enough room for Arnot and Tuck and Jackson in the same side....so who goes :shh
My order would be
Tuck
Arnot
Hackson
Tuck can't play forever as much as we would like him to, so good thing when he does hang up the boots Arnot will be ready to step right in. Also, if Tucky goes down with injury, we have a good replacement for him now. Still think we'll see another 2 years of Tucky in the seniors, but Arnot should look to push in from end of 2014 and beyond.
-

So what your saying is we can actually develop a player in the reserves? :o
Damn, what a luxury.

I hope it's not the case but I suspect Tuck will fall-away this year.
-
If he's anything like his old man ,we should start seeing tucky fall away around the year 2027
-

Possibly blokes like Arnot and co should be pushing Jackson out of the side.
If Tucky is as durable as his old man so be it but I think a spot at HF where he is good overhead and a reliable shot for goal is where Tucky can stake a claim.
If Tucky and A Edwards were played side by side In the same position Ireckon Tucky would be more consistent by the length of the Fleming straight. :thumbsup
-
tucky plays more inside than his old so his body takes more of a battering.
i reckon 1-2 years at the most will see him hang up his boots
-
Arnot just needs to continue building that engine.
Definitely should kick more, however his body positioning in the contest was good!

Named after Tim or Damien? :shh :shh

I'd love to see biscuit push Hackson out, but can't see the coaches not picking him unfortunately.
Tucky will be fine this year, same old Tucky. Won't take a backwards step. :clapping
but Arnot should look to push in from end of 2014 and beyond.
So what your saying is we can actually develop a player in the reserves? :o
Damn, what a luxury.
I guess that is what I am saying. I am shocked as well :lol

Tuck is as robust as the China walls. Will kick on for.many moons.

Matt Arnott will need to push someone out with consistant performances if he wants to play senior football!
Time will tell who that is but I woundnt want to have a couple of bad games in the seniors.

Agree our overall depth is looking better every year
-
What did we all think of Arnot's game?
He had 14 disposals (10k, 4h), 5 marks, 2 tackles and kicked 1.2. If he had kicked those two goals he would've been classed the hero.

But he didn't so I'm still unsure about the quality if his finishing.
He is a unit though
-
Concern over his kicking
-
My main concern with Arnott is that it appears he thinks he can crash through all packs.AS a junior and built the way he is he might have been able to do this but he should realise quickly that at AFL level more times than not he cant
-
love his effort and intensity but he can't kick . u can't kick u can't play full stop.. throw him in with rance white Jackson and mguane.. good bye .... if u repeatedly miss targets u cannot play
-

Surely you can't have Rance on that list anymore?
-
Has arnot trimmed down from last year?
-
Arnot is an like an investment property.
Was "GOOD" yesterday playing in the midfield, head over the football at all times and tackling was good.
Apart from the behinds scored, he is a future inside midfielder that Hardwick would want.
Goal kicking will improve.
-

Judging by his post-match comments I would say Username had a hunge on Rance to top yesterday's goal kicking. Media had Rance in our best, some even had him BOG but Username saw fit to can his effort and name Rance our worst. I didn't watch it so have no opinion of my own but that's a wide gap in assessments! Maybe he asked Rance for an autograph and got knocked back?
-
I think Rance took 10 marks and 6 were intercepts - basically saving us scores or inside 50s from Bombres.
Would've thought this stat alone kept us in the game during that 3rd qtr and therefore puts him in our best

rance missed many targets and turned the ball over all day again, and repeatedly runs in circles sideways and gets himself in all bother,,,, costs us too many goals
now the question is to all of you
DO YOU WANT TO WIN A PREMIERSHIP OR NOT
IF THE ANSWER IS YES THEN WE CANNOT WIN ONE WITH PLAYERS LIKE RANCE THAT ARE SO IFFY WITH THEIR SKILLS ESPECIALLY UNDER PRESSURE
TOO MANY OF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH MEDIOCRITY
-
RANCE WAS NOT BOG

I had many ???? Over Rance early on but have seen him improve every year, mostly his decision making and field kicking.
I understand your stance on mediocrity as I for one have been going on about it since joining this forum.
There weren't any problems yesterday with his delivery that I remember has really improved that area of his game.

DOnt think Rance was BOG
But gee he is holding that backline together at the moment and more importantly he is the leader down there. Certainly was yesterday, incredibly vocal

VIDEO: Choco Cub watch: Arnot
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-03-14/choco-cub-watch-arnot
Richmond development coach Mark Williams has praised the work ethic of young Tiger Matt Arnot over the pre-season period.
“Part of my role is to look after him and try and get him to the stage that he’s ready to play and he understands the game plan and also what’s required to be an AFL footballer. To his credit, he’s worked really hard at it,” Williams said.
“He’s really diligent about coming to see me and looking at tape and making sure that he’s doing the extra things like that.
Williams, however, also pointed to an area of Arnot’s game that needs improving . . .
“He misses too many goals ....

If Arnie has a good game on Saturday including snagging a couple then I wouldn't be surprised if he sneaks into the round 1 line-up. Another inside mid with Foley absent. He's had a few articles over preseason with the coaches praising him so he must be very close to getting a senior game in the real stuff.

I could see him playing on a mitch robinson type in r1. maybe trying to tag him out of the game.

I like the look of Arnot, WP.
But my concern would be the pace of blues indeginous brigade and matty white being one of those players that could chase and tackle im just concerned about his disposal.
Yarran etc could cut us to pieces if we get our selections wrong

Arnot not debuting after all
We need blokes who are prepared to tackle and atakc the contest and we refuse to play a kid whose a bloody good tackler
Staggering

Really bad side on paper. No structure and too many plodders = massive loss. Will be the game that turns up the heat for Harwick.

Matthew Arnot expected to make his Richmond debut
Bruce Matthews
From: Herald Sun
June 29, 2013 4:55PM
RICHMOND is poised to promote Matthew Arnot for his AFL debut against St Kilda.
Arnot is expected to get his chance in at least two forced changes to the Tigers' team in the twilight game at the MCG.
Young midfielder Nick Vlastuin and tall defender Troy Chaplin are in doubt, with Arnot and Luke McGuane, named among the emergencies, the obvious replacements.
Arnot, 19, has been close to selection for his first AFL game several times this season after solid VFL form.
Recruited from Oakleigh Chargers at pick No.55 in the 2011 national draft, Arnot impressed with his contesting work in the VFL before a hamstring injury sidelined him late last season.
The 180cm defender was the centre of attention from several teammates at training at Punt Road Oval, which seemed to indicate he has been given the nod for his AFL start.
Vlastuin, a Rising Star nominee, didn't join teammates when the Tigers had the light workout yesterday.
The gun recruit was restricted to only five possessions by a lower leg injury against the Western Bulldogs last Sunday.

-
He goes alright this kid :shh
-
Yes well, good call this, if it happens!!
-
Houli May be out also
-
Looking forward to today's game. And I do hope there is a few changes, would be good to get a game into Arnot for Nick and maybe Dea for Houli. Hope Chaplin plays though. As I have said a couple of times, it doesn't hurt to give some games to those that are 23, 24, 25 in the pecking order leading up to finals just to keep them all freshish. Need everyone playing for a spot week in week out to keep the urgency up for keeping your spot. It's how good teams become great, competion for spots. :gotigers
-
I hope Houli is not out. Would be a big blow. Provides critical drive from backline.
-

The players mooted to come in for Vlaustin and Houli - Arnot and Dea need to be continually tested as bono-fide replacements prior to any finals campaign.
Better now than when the pressure is really on come September.

Today is a must win game. I would rather experiment in games we are not expected to win. We have to win games like today to have any chance of reaching finals.

Exactly, if we lose this one there would be some squealing and changes of opinion
-
As much as I dont like playing injured players, I really hope Chaplin and Houli are fit enough to play, they may have a little niggle but players are always carrying something little.
IF Chaplin and Houli are out... could be a serious chance of losing.
-
Good first game. Saw some Saints players trying to bump him around in the first quarter and they were just bouncing off him. Was happy to rough them up too. I think it was the third quarter he tackled Montagna or something, stripped the ball and ran on. Heaps to work with. Even if he doesn't get another game this year due to a fit Tuck and Vlastuin than definitely worth still keeping on IMO. Was waiting for his dodgy disposal but seemed pretty good. :cheers
-
Went alright....no sqeualing or changes of opinion from anyone that backed him in, just the doubters that are hiding now......lead the tackles, couldn't of asked for much more really.

Loved his work, another morris who just throws his weight around and smashes bodies
-
We finally might have some bargaining power at the trade table :whistle
-
who were the doubters?
I have doubts about his ability to kick the footy properly ie. kicking at goal has been a problem in the past and sometimes misses easy targets.

and you've seen him play how many times?

Was massive in other areas, pressure tackling was far and away our best. Should get another run
-
Like Ramps I have seen him play many many times and my question marks have always been about his kicking and a desire for the physical contest rather than the ball.Tonight he played well,I hope I can say that most weeks for the rest of his time at Richmond.
-
With Tuck and Floss to come back I can't see it....
-
Foley can nick off back to Coburg now ;D
-
Was pretty pleased with arnot, looked like he belonged at the level, would have loved him to nail the goal rather than pass
-
yep stuff Foley the colac hack off
-
Could have been more selfish and had a few shots at goal in the last.
All in all a good debut. Hard as nails and gave some nice lace out passes into f50 a few times. :thumbsup
-
Did well the biscuit! :thumbsup
Very hard at the footy in patches.....
-
Did he win the medal?
-
I thought he overcommitted in a couple of marking contests and want to ground a bit easy but became much more settled as the game wore on. Definitely worth persevering with. Strong body for a 19 y/o kid.
-
Good kid
-
i can't believe demspey got a free kick for when arnot flattened his legs
-
Honestly whatever diet this guy is on get McBean and Vickery to do it too haha.

With Matty and Nick in the guts there will be some serious physical damage done to opponents over the coming seasons. And I must say they have a good 'inside' role model in Jackson. The question is, where does this leave Tuck?

Arnot’s whirlwind debut

“It was a bit frustrating at times, because I thought I was able to play, and I thought I was ready to play.

whats wrong with this kid? needs to be more like big ben. plodder at VFL level but will no doubt turn it on at AFL level if just given a game that he hasn't earned.
-
Scotty Turner presented him his jumper
-
Really good speaker, I want him to be playing consistently but I can't see a spot for him in the team !! Maybe if Matt White looses some form but even then I dont recon Arnott is the kinda guy who would play well as a sub, he only got better as the game went on against saints.

Turning point of the game.

Hard little bastard

Like this kid should play for the rest of the year.
Finds it, is tough and a hard nut.
I felt the game was turning our way when he collided with the Suns player but it was all fair I thought.
What else should be fair is king hitting Campbell Brown the sniper.
That cheap shot on Cotch was diabolical and a few others also and then listening to Dermie try and justify it. Loved it when he ran into Ablett though. :wallywink

Liked the way Cotch came back at Brown.

Richmond teenager Matt Arnot shows way as Richmond end their Cairns hoodoo against Gold Coast
Al Paton
Herald Sun
July 13, 2013 7:15PM
RICHMOND'S refusal to leave Cairns without its first win against Gold Coast was packaged in the 86kg frame of Matt Arnot.
Playing just his second game, the teenager picked up 15 disposals and kicked a goal - one of just 11 at a rain and wind-swept Cazaly's Stadium.
But it was his full-throttle attack on the ball, and anyone who got in his way, that ensured the Tigers approach the toughest three weeks if their season with a 10-5 record.
Early in the third quarter Arnot cannoned into Rory Thompson, forcing the emerging star off the field - and to hospital for scans on a shoulder/chest injury.
Thompson had completely blanketed Jack Riewoldt to that point and his injury forced Guy McKenna to call on Seb Tape, playing just his second game after a year out with a knee injury.
Riewoldt suddenly came to life and although he squandered several opportunities, a left-foot snap after marking on the boundary in the final quarter would prove the sealer.
Midfielder Dan Jackson, who with Brett Deledio did a superb tag-team on Suns skipper Gary Ablett, said Arnot had a problem in the pre-season - he was doing to teammates what he did to Thompson tonight.
"We had to tell him that friendly fire wasn't the best thing, but you can't question his attitude," Jackson said.
"He has to be careful with the rules but he treads that line pretty well and he's certainly got a terrific attitude so I think we'll see him get more games."

Didn't he kick two goals? Our opener and that one that sailed over hands and bounced through?

^ I thought so too.
Loving this kid. Needs to be a bit more agile at times, but Geez you can't argue with his physique. He's a MUST for the team VS Freo/Hawthorne/Sydney. And I hope Tuck comes back so that we have even more size in there. Drop Grigg, too skinny.

Hard to tell sometimes haha. I thought it was Foley but they were saying Arnot I think so I was like W/E thank F we goaled.

By richmondfc.com.au
Monday, July 15, 2013
Arnot collided heavily with Gold Coast defender Rory Thompson in the third quarter, in an act typical of the physical nature of his playing style.
“It’s one of my strengths. I’m a pretty developed body…I’ve always been like that since I was a junior, and it’s one of the styles of my game,” he said.

Would love to see him take out that weasel Ballantyne
-
Love the kids toughness. Hope he plays a block of games now to build on his career especially given the tough opponents we have over the next three weeks.
-
being physical will only take you so far matty. work hard on the skills son you need to add some polish but so far so good.
imo the man we most need back for the freo game is tuck. they dominate sides thru their big mids and theres a lot of em. we need to fight fire with fire. we also need to structure right with our talls ffs.

“Fortunately the scans revealed that Rory had suffered no internal damage. However he does have some bruising of the chest which our medical team will monitor that throughout the week, but we remain optimistic that Rory will be available for selection this week.”
And a bruised ego perhaps? :shh

Arnot’s season over
By richmondfc.com.au
Exclusive to richmondfc.com.au
5:19pm AEST Monday, July 29, 2013
Young Richmond midfielder Matt Arnot will miss the remainder of the 2013 season with a back injury.
The 19-year-old had worked hard to establish himself in the senior team, playing four of the last five games in the seniors, before bad luck intervened.
“Unfortunately scans have shown he has a stress fracture in his back, which was a bit of a surprise to us,” said Richmond’s Elite Performance Manager, Peter Burge.
“It’s really disappointing for Matt, and for Richmond. But we’ll get him back for the pre-season, and get him going from there.”

Arnot takes aim for 2014
By richmondfc.com.au
Monday, September 23, 2013
“Physically, I want to get a lot better,” Arnot told ‘Roar Vision’.
“I want to be one of the fittest, if not the fittest, at the Club next year in terms of the best runner . . . an elite runner, both to and from.
“It’s also about understanding your role as well . . . getting your footy mind around it.
“And, playing in the midfield, also is something I want to do a lot more next year.

Loved this kid from the first day i met him.
Always walks around with a footy in his hands and is so determined to do whats required.
Quality kid.

Very excited about the biscuit's potential. The club needs a battering ram now that Tuck has retired

Great interview, very well spoken and understands what he needs to do to improve :clapping

Matt Arnot in focus
richmondfc.com.au
October 18, 2013
In the fourth part of a new off-season series on richmondfc.com.au, Richmond’s VFL coach Tim Clarke provides an exclusive assessment of the 2013 form and future prospects of young Tiger midfielder Matt Arnot.
“He got a lot more of the ball and he had a lot more involvement.
“So, I can really see Matty having an impact at senior level next year, if he can keep aggressive side to him in check.
“That drive is going to make him be successful, but you’ve also got to control it. You can’t go overboard . . .”

“He gave away a lot of ‘50s’ (50-metre penalties) early in the year and, as a coach, that’s quite frustrating.
I chuckled a bit when I read that because I'm just imagining him charging through some 70kg kid and knocking the wind out of him
-
Could be a ball winning machine but thinks fondly of himself and has a short temper. I think they will get that out of him though and he will be a handy contested player going forward.
-
average footballer at present and needs lots of work to iron out the deficiencies. if he doesnt improve he could be out of the AFL in the next 2 years.

Any news on how Arnott is travelling?
-
Mate said he was running laps only but the size of a tree trunk!!!!
-
ive been having a fair old go at most things lately. just thought it time to for a bit of positivity.
gotta admit i really like this kid. i think he can make it but he does need to step it up next yr. geez 6 - 10 games would be a good return.
a few posters have talked about the importance of arnot and helbig taking the next step and i agree. because imo of the lack in numbers of genuine mids we desperately need these big bodied mids to go to the next level and actually make good contributions to the seniors. heres hoping. the othe kid id like to see get a good run at it and manage a few games is williams. almost the forgotten injury riddled rookie on the list. trouble is hes now missed the better part of 18mnths 2 yrs of footy thru injuries.
-
i think he has more players ahead of him than behind.. but hes hard at it and tough but for me he lacks something.. not sure what it is. Awareness?
-
IMO he lacks a bit of talent.
Big body and all, looks tough, tackles well, but I don't think he has the finer skills. If he makes it he'll be a B-grade enforcer.
-
Agree. If he fails it will be due to lack of class - awareness, skills etc.
Certainly has some good things to work with.
-
If he can take out one opposition player pee game he's certainly doing his job

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2014-01-23/arnots-back-on-track
* You basically start from step one. I’m probably in the midst of doing my pre-season now. While the boys are fine-tuning their skills out on the footy field, I’m gut-running and getting my body physically able to be able to compete at the" highest level.”
* I had a bit of down time, which was good. I did a few other hobbies that I wanted to do. You go from such and active person and having a very active lifestyle, do doing absolutely nothing. The physios aren’t there the whole time. Nobody’s there watching you when you want to go for a walk or bend down to do whatever. You have to be very, very strict on yourself and tell yourself to sit it out. It was really hard when two months into it, it wasn’t hurting, but I still couldn’t do anything. That was a bit tedious.
* My goal for this year is to finish off the season. I think that’s a better goal to have compared to starting off the season with a bang and always being in and out of rehab. I want to give myself a complete opportunity to play consistent footy at the highest level.
-
I'm loving the competition for spots this preseason. Almost every spot on the ground is contested and very few players are 100% lock ins. Great for depth, the VFL side and our motivation levels :thumbsup
-
Agree Stripes, the list is starting to generate critical momentum :thumbsup
-
Bloke has a good head on his shoulders. Top attitude, just might make it yet.

Well said Stripes.

Arnot on the rise
richmondfc.com.au
April 16, 2014 11:19 AM
Arnot made his AFL debut for Richmond last year and played four games all-up in the 2013 season, before being grounded with a severe back injury.
Having shaken off that problem, shown good form in the VFL, and regained his place in Richmond’s side, Arnot is determined to maximise his playing attributes.
“I’m a half-forward, more of a defensive-mindset forward, but can go in the middle and win the contested footy,” he said.
“Winning that inside ball is probably one of my main strengths. Running is as well, especially from zero to 50 and then onwards . . .
“Eventually, as I go further in my career, I’d like to be more of a midfielder.
“I’ve got no problems with my fitness – I think I can match it with some of the best – it’s just a matter of trying to get in there (the midfield).

If he can be as good as Tuck i'd be stoked.

Better decision maker and skill then we should have the ready made replacement for Foley.

Agree. Cameo player at the moment. Fair step up to being a best 22 midfielder.

Tell you what, he is showing up about 6 players on the current team that are penned in every week. He is doing enough for me at the minute.

Agree, the sooner Dimma puts the younger guys in the better off we will be.
Though there are arguments they're not smashing the door down to be selected, its dissapointing to see the same players continually picked.
-
Good moment I think it was the third or maybe the fourth quarter. Biscuit has the ball on the wing. It's congested. Lion comes at him. Biscuit just decides to basically headbutt this POS in the chest and bulldoze through him then gets the ball out.
A lot of guys would have crumbled. Like Houli, Ellis, Grigg...

Yeah just barrels through, love it and his skills are nowhere near as bad as people were claiming last year. Think he's comfortably a best 22 player right now, now he's just got to keep working hard to go to the next level.

Biscuit is a fantastic nickname! Most 'nicknames' are crap in the sense they're just shortened versions of their actual name. To have a different word altogether is what makes the best nicknames. I suppose the biscuit haters here would simply prefer we call him 'matty.'
I hope James Brayshaw jumps on the biscuit bandwagon and gets ridiculously emotional when the biscuit decks someone

Watch much VFL? Been in the bests all year and was last year before his injury. Scapegoated after his last AFL game for only getting 9 touches - at half-forward, which is not his primary position, in a flogging by Hawthorn. Still laid 9 tackles in the same game. Better option than Thomarse.

Thomas was brought in originally as a rookie and was elevated. His stocks have risen whilst others have fallen according to Dumma and his merry band of malakes.
Arnott needs to play senior footy for the rest of the year. No point bringing in a player for one game and then scapegoating him for a big loss.
-
I wish they would bring in Arnot but I have grave doubts. It would be too much common sense for one thing.
-

He played more than one game. But I agree he should get a few games in a row then as long as he is producing he can stay in
-
Next up is Matty Arnot.
Matty played 4 AFL games in this his 3rd season to bring his career tally to 8. He was brought into the senior side for rounds 4-6 (vs Coll, Bris, Haw) before being dropped. He earned a return for a one off game again against Brisbane in round 16. His best return for the season, was 13 disposals in our first meeting with the Lions up at the 'Gabba. For the bulk of 2014, Arnot played with our VFL side where he average 20 disposals over 14 matches.

Do we keep or trade/delist Matty Arnot?
-
Keep if can't trade
A depth player
-
Trade
-
Keep. If does not perform next year the club will delist him
-
Seems to have attributes of a good midfielder but think his attitude is probably the thing holding back. Would guess if he ended up at a top 4 club would most likely end up a handy contributor, keep for now and delist next season if no improvement.
-
Massive body and good attitude hide the fact he hasn't got good awareness on the footy field.
Needs a bigger tank too.
I would give him 1 year and reassess.
-
Give him a proper crack, stop dropping him and stuffing his confidence the way we always do with our kids.
Honestly this is the biggest problem with our development IMO. You get a kid with a bit of talent and just repeatedly crush him by dropping him after 25 minutes game time as the sub or a few rounds max.
Bloke has a big body. Doesn't need the most polished skills. Look at Miles for example. Just has to go get the damned pill and dish it out to Chimp/Lids etc.
-

His tank, like his kicking skills are grossly underated - one of the fitter blokes on the list.
-
Nah.
Not up to it. Free up his spot and recruit someone who can play.
Very mediocre footballer.
-
Keep, because at the moment we are not interested in anyfucking one so we will need all the bloody players we have, crap or not. :banghead
Apart from that I think he will still be a good player.
-
I'm less inclined to think he'll make it rather than Dea or McDonough but again, wish he had been given a stretch this year to help us make a more informed decision.
-
I'm less inclined to think he'll make it rather than Dea or McDonough but again, wish he had been given a stretch this year to help us make a more informed decision.
I reckon he definitely deserves a decent go next year.
8 games in 3 years - has had 2 strings of 3 consecutive games.
At least Dea has been given a decent crack with 5 cracks at 4 consecutive games in a row or more over his 5 years with 14 games in his 3rd year.
Hopefully, he is given to opportunity to play enough where he doesn't have to worry about being dropped every week he plays a senior game.
-
Keep.
He needs to be played as a battering ram midfielder and not plonked in the forward pocket for him to show his worth. The club is devoid of depth so we need a back up extractor anyway. Need to keep him for insurance say if Miles and/or Cotch gets injured or whatever as we all know the team's ability to win the contested ball when it's all up to Cotchin is equivalent to the likelihood of me dating a Victoria's Secret model
-
Gone, you read it here first

Yep, fair call YAB. Here what you say about Dea and agree that he has been given a better go than the other fringe types. And we both agree that Arnot and the others should have been given more. I guess my difference of opinion between them is just a gut feel thing - I see more in Dea than Arnot but hey, if I had much of a clue I would be working for a club in recruiting!! ;D
-
its pretty simple
we currently have 4 free spots on the list proper to fill. if we do just one f/a and one trade it will mean one more has to be cut. the only uncontracted players we have are
arnot, batchelor, dea, elton, petterd and mcdonough.
if i was a betting man id say one definately most likely two of the above are in trouble but which ones. to be honest it wouldnt bother me if all of em went.sad to say but true petterd whos an ordinary player is easily the best performed of them all.
-
If he plAyed for a side that was outside of finals he would have played 15 or more games. Another mid draft gem from guru FJ, wouldn't surprise if he seeked ops elsewhere. A ball magnet at vfl and a tackling machine with a deft left foot that doesn't oftsn dissapoint. I'd like to keep him though a r2 pick would tempt :shh
-
That's one of your best BJ
-
Big delist 4 me
Showed early in the season he was clearly not up to it and failed to keep his spot accordingly
Very one dimensional player

Like the attitude & desire, just not equipped for AFL footy style of the mid 2010's.
Would have been a hit 20 to 30 years ago.
Time to make a call and move on and by replaced by a player with elite pace.

I think Arnott is pretty much biscuits with out the s... no one will want him so we cant offer him up as trade bait best we do is delist and see whats around in the late picks knowing us we will probably re draft him have him as a rookie...
-
Meh. Personally I dont think he has enough good attributes to make up for his shortcomings (mainly class and pace). Not really fussed if he gets the chop.
-
Matty Arnot's back as a rookie as planned.
-
Very good, now Matt its up to you mate.
-
Dud, re-list.

Needs a huge year next year. Good luck to him.

I hope he makes it because he works so hard. Lacks natural awareness on the footy field but makes up for it in hardness.
Good luck Matt!
-
“The decision to delist Matt was a tough one to make, however it was a necessary list management decision, which enabled us to go into the draft period with the number of selections we wanted,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson.
“We committed to re-drafting Matt, as we believe he still has a contribution to make to the Club.”

* I’ve had a couple of years now, where I’ve been injured here and there but just consistently my performance hasn’t been good enough. So I’ve attacked this pre-season as if it’s my last because, if you don’t play well consistently in this year, it probably will be. You’ve got to be realistic in that.
* I’d been really focusing on my accountability to my defensive aspect of the game. I thought I had a good game on the weekend, so we’ll see what happens from there. To this stage, I haven’t missed a pre-season session, so I’ve been really excited about how I’ve been going.

I want to see the club give some kids a proper crack. None of this in as a sub, out next week junk.
Clubs like Geelong give their kids proper goes to prove themselves.
I'd take Arnot over Grigg purely for hardness. He's a good kick. Big body. And worth playing over the likes of Newman with the next 10 years in mind instead of the last 10.
