I would really like the RFC to recruit more Indigenous players, I really don't think we have focused much on this particular part of our business since JON left. We have had Tambling and we have Edwards but I would like to see a more robust development plan or a recruitment plan implemented that specifically focuses on the recruitment of Indigenous players.
Maybe we have this process in place now, if we do I don't really see it as being effective. I know we select the payers we do based on the needs of the team and the business of winning a flag, but surely this must include or at least should include Indigenous recruitment.
I would like to see at least two Indigenous players in the team and another two on the Rookie list or at least training with the club through a development plan..
The Swans, Hawks, Pies, Blues, WC, Dockers and the Roos seem to be all over this. Even GWS seem to have a few Indigenous players.
Any thoughts or stuff on our current or future plans in this area??

why should the recruiting team focus more on recruiting indigenous players?

They should've taken Gartlett but we didn't. Hawthorn took him and have a heap of Indigenous players in recent times after having a policy of no Aboriginee recruits.
Will be a star for them just quietly.

Really??
Every business should be focusing on this. The incredible talent they have, the celebration of the Indigenous round and the Dreamtime at the G game, where we can only represent the Indigenous community with one player..goes without saying really.
I agree with PM too.

WAT if the best available player in the draft at our selection was indigenous, I highly doubt we would pass on them. Or are you saying that we need to focus our scouting resources more on competitions with a higher percentage of Indigenous players (eg NT)? I think the Club has been very clear for some time that they are sticking to a strategy of recruiting players with specific skill sets that will compliment the team as a whole. If we are in the hunt for players with elite foot skills for example (which is the current mantra), I think the club would look at all potential candidates whether they are indigenous or not. If Garlett was a player without a heap of baggage, I am certain we would have gone harder for him.

That and in local WA, I know we have a recruitment plan I just think it should focus more on the Indigenous players than perhaps it does. Kevin Sheedy left a legacy behind him and I don't think we are supporting that legacy through recruitment, we are with the Dreamtime at the G game....but with one Indigenous player in our team??
-
drafting players based on skin color helps us to a premiership, how?
it not that hard o find out that around 3% of the population aboriginal.
since hardwick took over we have drafted 3 indigenous players.
so thats 3 in about what, 40-50 picks? which is about 6%, double the rate of the general population.
so by drafting to a certain criteria, of which skin color is not one, indigenous players have been statistically over represented, but now we should forgo some of the criteria that actually matter and start drafting on skin color instead?
-
I asked the same question to our recruiting department and they informed me that there has been less quality Indigenous players available in the last few drafts because the NT and Northern Queensland have been zoned to the new teams.
-
Rfc should be like south African cricket. At least 10% black by law :banghead :banghead

Would like to see more indigenous players playing for the club. Agree playing for the club should be based on merit not on skin colour but more effort should be putting into recruiting indigenous players. Clubs such as Hawthorn, Carlton and the Swans have benefitted greatly from putting in a real effort with regards to the recruitment of indigenous players. We have had some fantastic indigenous players in the past and there is no reason why if we put the necessary resources into it we can't have future indigenous champions.

That's a shame isn't it really, but an interesting reason as to why.
-
Our only priority should be good players. Meritocracies > Socialist quota systems.
Either way, Garlett would've satisfied both criteria.

Meritocracies > Socialist quota systems.
That's exactly what I was gonna say ;D

if so how do you propose that is done without compromising our current selection criteria?

Well you cant recruit what's not there can you...
al and smokey, why the bloody witch hunt, the thread was intended to view peoples thoughts on improving our indigenous recruitment and development, as well as to ask why we don't recruit more indigenous players most understood it!! Nothing to do with skin colour or stuffing social agendas!!

oh you are talking about development!
and when you opened the thread with
I would really like the RFC to recruit more Indigenous players
I actually thought you were talking about recruitment.
Really I should have known better, but you can see how i made that mistake?

Its not a witch hunt. The answer is pretty obvious, and simple, if you just think about it.
There is really only two possible answers to that question, and one is pretty unsavory and not very likely. The more likely answer is out of the control of RFC, so they cannot change it.

It's not a witch hunt from me at all WAT, I just completely disagree with your thoughts of needing to recruit more indigenous players. I don't give any creedence to any thinking along the lines that racial or ethnic background gives you special skills or advantages. A player is a player is a player regardless of where they are from or who they pray for in my eyes and I want our club to secure the best of those players wherever and however they find them. I couldn't give a rat's clacker if they're indigenous or not and I don't think you will find any stats that suggest it is worth adopting a plan to spend a disproportionate amount of time or money chasing players from a particular societal group (and I include Ireland in that). Stop taking it personally just because I don't agree with your point of view, and to suggest that those who don't are not "more mentally mature" - really? You expect to be taken seriously when that's your line of argument?

Maybe for political correctness sake there should be a quota of indigenous players per side

Well Chuck believe it or not that is exactly how it works in many industries and it is very prevalent in the mining industry, has been for years.
I am not saying I agree with it in football but it could very well work as the process has been very successful in the workplace.

I'd have thought we get a left footed, dark skinned, Jewish, nazi sympathiser and give him number 17 and we start a tradition (and a quota)

What part of the context of the thread did I misconstrue? My only comment was to ask if you thought the reason put up by Stripes was a satisfactory reason for the club's lack of recent indigenous recruiting and you replied that I had engaged in a "witch hunt" of you. WTF? And then you put up Elim's post as 'getting it' but all he did was agree with you where many others didn't and said so. Maybe to get the context of the thread right in the first place you should have said this is what I think and I only want replies from those who agree. Would have saved any confusion.

Love it !
FWIW I will openly state that I think we need an aboriginal small forward in our team. Am I allowed to say aboriginal ? If not then I think we need an indigenous small forward.....preferrably black. Am I allowed to say that ? Preferrably dark skinned I meant.
Am I being anti white with that comment ? Is that racist ?
Aww man I dunno what I can and can't say anymore ?
I want Steven Motlop in our team !!

i just want them to recruit the best players available.
If they happen to be indigenous then that is fine.
What I don't want is to recruit an indigenous player and miss out on a far better non indigenous player because of that!
Simple!

Yep it's about recruiting the best available talent
Then it's up to the Club to have the right programs in place to develop them
I reckon it's the 2nd part (read development) that we haven't been great at previously but are doing everything in oour power to get that part right

Quite a few years ago, a friend of mine was sitting down with me watchin footy for the first time (I was in QLD).
He said to me "wow did you see that, who's he".
I said "who"
He said "that black guy" (and he truly wasn't being racist either).
He was talking about Nicky Winmar, and ya know what, I didn't even realise there we're any indigenous players on the field. For that matter I didn't even notice there being any white coloured skin people out there either.
When I watch footy, I WATCH footy, I don't look for different skin colour, race, creed, religion, or what ever else, I just don't care to take notice what colour skin flew to take an awesome grab or booted a great goal.
I love footy and for people to keep on about irish, aboriginal, italian, or samoan footy players is continuously frustrating.
We don't need to focus, as you said about this part of the business, the focus is and always about winning premierships.
I get your post and see where your coming from for sure, but can't we just get a premiership first.
I personally don't give a rats as to what footy players we can get hold of, as long as they are good at it.
I do have a question for you though.
Of the teams that you mentioned having indigenous players (I didn't know GWS had indigenous players lol) could you name each individual indigenous player?
Or would be easier just to ask you to name as many players on each of those lists.
I would be willing to bet that naming players on a team is far easier than picking out individual players that are supposedly different from everyone else.
Footy players are footy players and that's all that should matter.
I'm not saying any of this because of your post, it's all of footy.
Oh and that guy that I mentioned at the start of my post, he was part aboriginal, and I didn't even know it :lol
-
Draft on talent, potential and long-term manageability (of physical and psychological issues).
Not on skin colour.

Richmond have been doing more than most others when it comes to indigenous issues. They have run several seminars for supporters around it.
As for players, Richmond host indigenous juniors all the time. I would say most here on this site fail to see all the things that have been going on behind the scenes. An organisation doesnt always need a poster boy.
