AFL Round 9
Richmond v Melbourne
Saturday May 17, 2014
Start time: 1.40pm
Both sides coming off narrow defeats in games they had a chance of winning in the last quarter.
Early thoughts? Will having had the bye be an advantage or disadvantage?
-
if we lose it will be an excuse for many.
-
Season over if we lose, demons won't be easy beats. They will see us as a potential win and take confidence out of that pre season game
-
LMFAO at how this is a danger game.
stuff we are poo
-
Must win game! :shh
-
I watched Melb play the Dogs last night & I'm not exactly shaking with fear over what the Dees are serving up ATM. A few players are going alright for them (Jamar, Jones & Vince), but overall I feel pretty confident about this one ... assuming that Jacqueline Watts plays. One thing though - I'm expecting to see 18 Melb players in our forward line for most of the game. :banghead
-
Watts had a crack last night.
Far worse than him in that side
-
Expectations on Watts are so low these days that he gets a pass mark if he has a crack and lays a tackle or two. He was ineffectual last night, as usual. Salem and Kennedy Harris are doing way more for that team and they are first year players.
I expect a tough contest.
-
I'll be at this game, don't worry about that :gotigers :thumbsup :clapping

How did Melbourne beat us in the preseason? I think it was through applying more pressure, winning the stoppages, forcing the turn over and then retaining the football. Realistically they more more willing to put in the effort than we were. Melbourne always seem to match up well against us. They always believe they can beat us if they fight out the game. If we are to win this game we have to approach it like we are playing a top 4 team and force our focus to the 1% and pressure acts first and hard running link play second. This is how we can beat any side in the comp
-
When everyone else was flogging Melbourne by 15-20 goals we were only beating them by 5 - 7 goals and they took us into the last quarter. This year they're better and we're worse.
-
If the Richmond of the 3rd quarter against Geelong turn up we should win this easily. With Brett Deledio back on the park I'm fairly confident about this one.
-
I am not confident...for some reason Melbourne match up well with us...no matter how bad they are playing...As Diocletian said, we beat them by substantially smaller margins than other teams beat them.
Crickey, I remember a game where they were playing their best champagne footy against us (and got a $500K fine for doing so for playing so well) and we only fell over the line with a Jordie "Now Long Gone" McMahon or was it Jordie "Could have been Callan Ward" McMahon kick after the siren.
This is a danger game for us.

when it comes to Richmond Vs Melbourne, the first game that comes to mind is this

They should he absolutely rabid to get out on the park and destroy Melbourne. DESTROY.
-
Any weak efforts will have permanent targets on them in my book..
-
I agree with the sentiments of the last few posts.
We lost the Jack Dyer game in 2003 and in more recent history while this did not apply to us Melbourne crumbled against Brissy round 1 2012 the week of Jimmy Stynes funeral and it must be said we'll have the eyes of the footy world on us on Saturday.
I sure hope the boys leave it all on the field when the games done and win for Tommy and the Club.
-

same here. im sick of giving the benefit of the doubt to pea hearts.
if any player squibs a contest or pulls away from contact under the circumstances it will tarnish them forever in my eyes
-
if we dont win against Melbourne it will be one of the all time disgraceful efforts of our football club. the players have an obligation and they must fulfill it. They are Richmond footballers its about time they realised it.
-
Yep, agree with all of the posters above. Any player offering any less than everything they have can GTFO! Not just for this week, but from here on.
I listened to KB on the radio this morning & I'm in no mood to tolerate any less than 100% passion & effort from anybody in Yellow & Black.
I draw a line right here _________. Be above it or GTFO!
-
Brisbane aside , we play the three worst teams in the AFL in the next three weeks. Melb , GWS and Essendon. There are no excuses for not winning all three games. None !

I really have no interest in this game or who wins it. This is a dead scrubber and 4 points is all that's on offer. Maybe a look at Lennon would be good and it would of been a smart decision to elevate and play Miles too.....but that won't happen.... :-\
We have blown the big games and the games we should have won, until we win the next two and then best some decent teams I won't be taking too much out of a win......IF WE WIN?????????

ok then

Worth more than just the four points to the club now WAT.

Dangerous to try and make this game into more than what it is I think.
Games of football will come and go and are nothing more than that, trying to attach a result to a reflection of someones life is folly.

Well said.
Often teams lose matches like this because of the emotion involved makes them forget about the task at hand. The team strategies and defensive goals are quickly overrun by energy being wasted on emotion.
Just like an army unit. There is a job to do, so you go in and do it to plan. Emotions are just distracting and often cause problems in combat scenes.

Preview: Richmond v Melbourne

May 14, 2014
WITH its season fast slipping away, Richmond is desperate for a win, and it will have added incentive as the club honours legendary coach Tom Hafey, who passed away on Monday. With four losses from their last five games, the Tigers need to find the formula that took them to September last season. Nobody is expecting Melbourne to play finals this year, but the Demons have impressed with gritty performances over the past fortnight. They pushed the Western Bulldogs in round eight but eventually fell 16 points short.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday May 17, 1.40pm
LAST FIVE TIMES
R8, 2013, Richmond 15.16 (106) d Melbourne 11.6 (72) at the MCG
R15, 2012, Richmond 13.23 (101) d Melbourne 11.12 (78) at the MCG
R3, 2012, Richmond 20.13 (133) d Melbourne 11.8 (74) at the MCG
R22, 2011, Richmond 17.15 (117) d Melbourne 17.8 (110) at the MCG
R14, 2011, Melbourne 17.16 (118) d Richmond 13.13 (91) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. When the Tigers comfortably defeated the Demons in 2013 they had 105 more disposals, 50 more marks, 14 more scoring shots and 19 more inside 50s.
2. The Tigers and Demons are equal 11th for contested marks this season with 59 each - an average of 8.4 for Richmond in seven games and 7.4 for Melbourne in eight games.
3. Richmond’s biggest win over Melbourne is 93 points in 1980 at the MCG while the Demons greatest win over the Tigers is 121 points in 1993 at the MCG.
4. With the recent return to the side of Mark Jamar, Melbourne has risen to fourth in hit-outs with 45.1 per game. In three games Jamar has averaged 42 per game.
5. This will be the 185th contest between Richmond and Melbourne, with the Tigers holding a clear advantage, 103-79. There have been three draws.
6. Nick Vlastuin is one of the few Tigers moving up in the Official AFL Player Ratings this season. The young Tiger has climbed from No.347 overall at the start of the season to No.297.
Prediction: Richmond by 20 points

70k will rock up imo

After listening to Grigg on Triple M last night I'm not convinced Hafey will be enough of a motivation. Most of these players didn't grow up with and bleeding for the Tigers like we did. Richmond are just their most recent employer. When asked about Hafey, Grigg said he had seen him around at a couple functions and he meant a lot to some of the older guys around the club (I interpreted that to mean blokes like Benny Gale). After that the convo turned into discussing how Grigg is the president of the social committee and the stupid crap they are going to get up to.
Before the game these blokes need the clip played to them asking that of they don't love the yellow and black then they should pee off to another club.
-
Grigg couldn't care less about how the RFC is performing. He's just here for the 350k a year he's on

Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones expects emotional Richmond in Round 9 clash, following death of Tiger great Tom Hafey
Herald-Sun
May 15, 2014 3:59PM
MELBOURNE co-captain Nathan Jones expects an emotion-charged Richmond side playing in memory of Tiger legend Tom Hafey on Saturday afternoon.
Drawing on his experience following the death of Demon great Jim Stynes in 2012, Jones said the Tigers would need to focus on balancing their emotions.
“Obviously with Jimmy passing away it was a pretty emotional week for the footy club and I guess the tough task is to balance that and not let it absorb too much of the playing group, so they can still perform on the weekend,” Jones said this morning.
“That’s one of the hardest things to do, it’s an individual thing and how the death of someone affects the individual. It’s almost out of the control of the footy club.
“It will be a great opportunity this weekend to honour him (Hafey) and obviously Richmond will be paying pretty significant tribute and it will be a pretty exciting game, I’m sure they will be pumped up and wanting to perform.”
Richmond has won the last four premiership season encounters between the two clubs, however the Demons will take confidence from their pre-season NAB Challenge win and Jones hinted the Tigers were vulnerable.
“We are well aware that they are probably not on top of their game, but they have some really key players. Obviously their forward line is set up and they are pretty strong through the midfield as well and they’ve got some really good ball users off half-back,” he said.
“We are going to have to come with our best game and that really competitive edge and that real tackling mentality that we’ve tried to bring in the first six or eight rounds.”
Umpires played a pivotal role in the AFL this weekend with a series of questionable decisions playing a big role in the round's results
A contentious free-kick paid against Demon defender Lynden Dunn was the major talking point from the club’s 16-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, with coach Paul Ross admitting unsure why the decision was paid.
Jones refused to blame the loss on a single free kick, however he conceded players were confused by “grey area” with particular rules causing players to enter contests with “trepidation”.
“They pay what they see. My opinion is probably similar to Roosy, I didn’t think the free kick was there, but the umpires made the call on the night and that’s what they saw …”
“I don’t think that influenced the result, there was other opportunities in the first three quarters where we cost ourselves the game …”
Jones said Dean Terlich (concussion) and James Frawley (hamstring) were progressing well but would need to get through training to be selected.

Why wouldn't they???
-
I meant it as it's very embarrassing that a poo side fancy themselves against us, speaks volumes of where we're at
-
feel like walking out after what l seen already. pathetic absolutely pathetic. One on one football wins me over anyday then watching poo like this from so called professionals who bang it on the foot to anywhere. Chaplin has no idea & is as slow as me on a bad day fair dinkum this is absolute rubbish
-
Chaplin was the lowlight of that quarter, just ahead of Hampson.
Griff didn't look all that interested in chasing either, just quietly.
-
I meant it as it's very embarrassing that a pooe side fancy themselves against us, speaks volumes of where we're at
I know what you meant, I agree, problem is every side fancies themselves against us.....even the VFL teams!!
-
Reckon the way we play this qtr will set the tone for the rest of the season. Can accept that 1st qtr as an excusebc of the break and emotion, but more of the same will show we're going nowhere well and truly
-
wow chaplin. too slow, too dumb, no skills. he is melbournes best player atm
-
Chaplin
Hampson
Houli
Griggster :sleep
-
Weak as pee from Vickery and then Houli dropping a sitter
-
Superb jib by Houli. Talk about hearing footsteps!
Vickery also looking really ordinary
-
The RFC is ordinary.
-
FFS Chaplin I mean srsly, is this for real??????
N
-
Then Chaplin stuffing up again.
-
Melbourne midfield showing our blokes how to run both ways.
-
Dee's in front eh......REALLY Richmond....your stuffing pathetic.
-
Shows that a coach really can completely turn a side around. Hardwick has done an okay job but we need someone with the ability to coach our players like Roos coaches his.
-
Finally the Dees make a mistake in front of goal. We need more pressure on the Dees from our half forwards. Griff and TV not getting to enough contests.
-
someone tell grigg to stop trying to kick a goal and pass it ffs.
-
someone tell grigg to stop trying to kick a goal and pass it ffs.
... or even if he went back and had a set shot ...
-
The RFC is ordinary.
Still. You get the feeling a roos or hickly would get something out of the list
-
find it interesting that Chaplin, Grigg and Hampson are receiving Bronx cheers. I think everyone has just had enough of dimmas hacks getting games week in week out when they are clearly passengers
-

Revolution
-
Chaplin is a joke.
-
Griffiths and Vickery are not working in the forward line. Both are getting where the ball aint and not chasing their opponents hard enough when the Dees win the ball back.
Chaplin needs to play twos for a few weeks to get some confidence - he's been hopeless all season.
Rance has been OK and Astbury hasn't been beaten in a contest.
-
On the bright side ... we don't have to worry about being too tall when Ivan comes back in! Hampson will be cutting oranges for the seconds & Vickery can hand him the knife. Chaplin can just watch, cos I wouldn't trust him with a sharp object. I drew a line & several are below it right now ...

Dead right!!
-
I think its all over folks. Win or lose this game, dimma has lost the players.
-
please and thankyou lennon, much needed youth.
-
Really don't know what to say ..... we're losing it massively in the midfield and our forwards just don't chase.
-
I am speechless at Chaplin
-
I am just going to lol now grigg
What a bunch of gumbies
-
Griggster
-
Astbury injured - leg

time to get on the beers and forget this season.

Looked pretty bad on the replay

our forward line is just an absolute embarrassment, been disfunctional all season. our scores are so low.
-
Houli actually stood up when someone was coming at him from behind????
-
Oh well maybe we can promote Darrou...actually WGAF.
-
what a bunch of selfish sad sacks.
-
What a disgrace and people pour there money into this club and get in return this.....
-

What a pack of weak gutless stuffing losers. Never have I been so stuffing embarrassed to admit to who I support in my entire life.
This is a new low, I didn't think it could get this bad but it has!!!!!
-
Absolutely a new low, but I don't know how bad it will have to get before Hardwick realises that it's some of his favourites that let him down the most.
Chaplin has been saved by the injury to Astbury.
Cannot play Vickery and Griffiths in the same forward line.
Need mids who will run both ways.
Most of all, need some on-field leadership.
-
RICHMOND FOOTBALL CLUB HAS JUST LOST MY SUPPORT & MY MEMBERSHIPS.
NEARLY 40 YEARS A MEMBER & I'M NOT GIVING THIS CLUB 1 MORE CENT OR EFFORT

What's Chaplin doing
DISGRACING HIMSELF with his performance.
-
Can someone please give a logical reason why Blair Hartley still has a job at Richmond. How could anyone go and recruit blokes like Hampson, Grigg and Chaplin. Seriously? They were an absolute disgrace today. Houli wasnt much better but he was slightly better than the other 3.
Overall how can we win games when we have players like this in the team. Seriously what the stuff is going on.

You can support that all you want. if you like sitting there watching someone kick to the next contest & that next contest is 10 metres away & the opponant dont have to hardly move to man the mark again then l must need to be on the drugs that make them things look pretty. cause it was pretty ugly what l seen for 2 & 1/2 quarters
-
For as long as Grigg is playing in this side, I will not waste another dollar on this club.
Apologies to tommy hafey. You deserved much more than what was shown today. A real shame.

Yep I will continue to support them
Hopefully this loss will be the catalyst for change.

& l'm told with 30 seconds left in the game they kick the ball out of defense 60+ metres :banghead why would any team not do that constantly & relief the pressure. MATCH FIXING comes to mind

Ramps its the same old issues we bring up. There has not been a year with we have not questioned how FJ and Hartley still have a job. Adding to that Clark, Daly and Williams.
When we moved to the Dimma coaching regime those recruiters should have been shown the door.
I have supported Dimma until today. he has to go at seasons end.
I cant see how he can coach out the 2 years. This is year 5 and next year with the cotchin martin contract talks looming, its looking like a fait accompli our 2015 year is already shot.

Just when we thought we had a long termer given what he has shown.
If you see the replay if Grigg didn't slip................ :banghead

God damn spell check............ :banghead
I want to snap a huge one off myself. In a brown paper bag and light it.........

Watching the replay, Punishment l know. How Deledio does not get a free kick with Dawes coming in & riding him to the ground in the 3rd at the centre bounce stumps me. Any other time it be a free kick. :banghead
-
Astbury just done his knee no-one near him just collapsed.
-
What is wrong with Ellis these days, Gone to pussy footballer. he is scared stiff out there. Gets the ball & just bombs away not looking. His been doing that all year.
-
Can tell you all they been reading the forums down there at Punt Road and they are in shock as to whats happening lol. I can tell them whats happening. You have recruited a bunch of list cloggers on big money, you took short cuts and you took the pee out of the Richmond supporters, members and sponsors again. You guys working at Richmond deserve all the vitriol and anger directed at you. You have failed all of us. Just get out of our club!

why the hell do these players kick the ball 10 meters. They lose the ball in the next contest so why ain't they instructed to kick the ball looooooooooooooong to create the next contest. Don't they have faith in the players up field. l'm so lost at the way they move the ball. 3 long kicks does the ground

I agree Monk. We were kicking much longer last year and our transitions were quick and precise so what has changed?

A vast majority of the players are exhibiting their true ability that is all.

can't beleive l'm watching the replay again. What is it with the umpires against us. We always get some bad decisions against us when clearly there is nothing in it. & not paying that great tackle by Lennon :banghead has the chief of umpires commented on that yet or just going to let it slide past as one of the worst decisions in football.
-
Players copped a fair whack from Sam Newman last night, the week before they discussed getting up for a milestone game is rubbish. Sam said last night in honour of Tom Hafey the tigers gave him absolutely nothing :-\
-
pre-season hype! Who would have thought 7 months ago.
We'll finish top 2 because our list is so much stronger now, but we couldn't get the job done against Melbourne for Hafey.
Hooray for everything :gotigers

whats happened to you dooks? when did you stop being the bloke who would enjoy a joke and a laugh and join the miserable old moles who seem to hate life and cant stand the thought of others being remotely happy

Careful, Al. You'll be accused of being an apologist who accepts mediocrity if you keep this up.
-
lol, bit late for that. that happens the first time you disagree with one of the hundreds of whiney posts.
the above post is not meant to be a poo hang though, just an observation, even sadness, at a change i have seen over the last 12 months or so.

That sounds like an apologist of apologists.

I agree Al and understand what you are saying.
But he's gone Al, we have to let him go.
He's now a Tiger Jihadist fighting a cause that not many understand with the exception of the extremists.
Have you seen the video of him be heading a Tiger stuffed teddy bear?
It's sick and perverted.

Not really sure what I've become re our club. How do you pigeon hole emotions?
Just would like some reasonable success for once in a GOD DAMN generation.
Optimism rarely cuts it anymore and im sick of hearing how damn good things are from fly by nighters, happy clappers and pepped up behind holes.
Things haven't changed. We are marginally better than we were 1-2 years ago.
Maybe I need some time away from this place to clear my mind :-[
-
Well smash Melbourne by 20+ goals this year
-
I know where Dooks is at.
I was a bees idiot from completely snapping last year and walking away from the club for good.
For the first time ever I went a month with no involvement in AFL. Didn't read, watch or care about it.
Got myself back on track but if we have a shocker next year I reckon I'd struggle not to break.
-
Each to their own. Can't blame anyone for getting fed up. I do get jacked off with pea brains coming onto an AFL RICHMOND SUPPORTERS FORUM and calling supporters stupid for posting positive stuff or enjoying a win.
Ok, it might be a little misguided at times but eff me sideways how stuffing dumb is it to waste your time on a forum and mindlessly bag the club unless you're a troll?
Fkg moronic self absorbed dribble.
