GWS Giants under pressure as Victorian clubs target host of out-of-contract young guns
Michael Warner and Jay Clark
Herald-Sun
February 25, 2015
GREATER Western Sydney young gun Devon Smith has emerged as the latest target of Victorian raiders.
Smith is one of six superstar 21-year-olds falling out of contract at the Giants at the end of the season.
Jeremy Cameron, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel and Will Hoskin-Elliott are also yet to recommit to the fledgling expansion club.
Player agents indicated they would wait to see how the club performed in the first half of 2015 before entering into serious contract discussions.
“It’s quite a unique set of circumstances up there,” one manager said.
The Giants have tabled a five-year deal for Smith, who finished second in the club’s best and fairest last year, but the classy goal-kicker wants to wait.
Smith has been touted as a future captain of the club.
Cashed-up Richmond will be at the front of the queue for top-end talent, while clubs like Geelong chasing Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield could also strike.
Cameron could demand more than a $1 million-a-season and has rejected Greater Western Sydney overtures to sign a new long-term deal.
Treloar has been linked to Collingwood.

It wasn't that long ago that apparently we were under salary cap pressure ::)

Not sure. I just remember reading articles about us last time around that we were under the squeeze and would struggle to sign anyone after Dusty and Cotchin.
-
Some media and some of our nuffies were saying we had no cap space :shh
-
Hoskin-Elliot please.
-
I want Hoskin-Elliott!
-
Hoskin-Elliot please.
Great minds.....
-
Need to get at least three of these players or it's a fail
-
Need to have a decent crack at least one or two, if we don't look at Danger!!
-
We could pick up WHE and a Shiel or Treloar for the price of Dangerfield. I know what I would prefer. Only problem will be having to deal with GWS as opposed to picking up Danger as a free agent
-
I hear Dan Richardson is pretty confident he can lure Tom Scully away from GWS.
-

If we can't manage to do a deal with GWS to swap our entire lists, then it's simply willful incompetence on our part.
-
pretty consistent with the mail im getting too :shh

Further evidence 2015 is a nothing year.

Not if it's the year we land #bomber2016.

Wow, talk about talent!
Would love to have any two of these blokes, they can all play. My picks of the bunch would have to be WHE + Jeremy Cameron.
Any of the other four would be great pick-ups though. Maybe we should grab the spoon, lose Rance to FA, get picks 1+2...
-
treloar & hoskin-elliott please

Rumour I hear is that Dangerfield has been offered the captaincy at Collingwood.

Pendles would be happy about that

Rumour on Big Footy that we're into Hannebery.

No real surprise given we tried to get him into the club last trade period. Melbourne boy who likely wants to come home.
-
if i was going to pick the eyes out of em, one or two of cameron, tomlinson, mccarthy, and plowman would be on my list.
-
Well there goes Cameron. Signed for approx $4mil over 5 years @ $800,000/season.
To be announced Friday with the re-signing of another GWS gun apparently.
Need to whisper some offers to these kids before they all sign up.

He's poo anyway

And given him Troy Taylors old house
-
800k ...and the rest...let's face it- AFL aren't going to let their pet project clubs lose too many young guns that easily. Why do you think it took a million-a-year long term deal for the 'scraggers to prise loose an unproven 18 year-old?
-
I'm hearing Dylan shiel is in our sights , he won't sign with gws , we re gonna have some comp but treloar and coniglio are also likely to hit the highway. Hawks have their eye on Whitfield , out of contract 2016, family has strong links to haw

What are you hearing now Bo ?
if i had to guess multiple voices from different characters. gollum and smeagal come to mind.
-
I just hear a constant hissing in my ear, but I got meniere's

Are you sure it's not the Gold Coasts young DUDS were. After?

Went and watched the Orange Goblins Take on the Sun's today. Cameron played like Garfield after eating a tray of Lasagne but there was a kid called Cam McCarthy who Kicked 3 goals in one quarter of footy. Not sure of his contract status but he is worth a serious look. Strong hands and was kicking them from a fair way out and into the wind. Was selection 14 in the 2013 draft and is still only 19.
For Supercoaches, Griffin was friggin awesome with 31 disposals in his first hitout. Almost tore the Suns a new one on his own.
-
Cameron played like Garfield after a tray of Lasagne
You mean after he ate it or like he was trying to get it?
Cause the latter would make a pretty decent forward I reckon.

cam mccarthy will be a ripper. i reckon the dockers will be heavily into him. especially if pav retires this yr.if he wasnt a west aussie kid i would already have been suggesting we go hard at him.
if he leaves that horrid club its likely he will head home.
-
This is why I took McCarthy in the phantom draft. Great credentials!
-
So just wondering ..... who is the best player people here would be prepared to give up to get, say, a Will Hoskin-Elliot or Adam Treloar?

Hampson + Grigg. They can have two for one!

lets throw in Michael laffy and Peter Czerkaski for some classic vintage value of the modern era ;D

Don't forget matchwinner Chris Pym and no 1 pick Richard Lounder. ;)

I reckon Wayne Henneman & Steven James would be a little miffed that weren't offered up as part of that trade

We've got a bit of a stockpile of backmen, if we keep Rance you might dangle Astbury. Prefer Chaplin gets traded but GWS wouldn't be that stupid.
-
Would be sad to see him go but if we traded Deledio for WHE or Treloar I'd understand

Not sure it's quite the embarrassment of riches down back and doubt Astbury would fetch much at this stage, unless he has a real breakout year.

I think that's more along the lines of what it would actually take.
-
agree about the sort of player it would take.
Although not an embarrassment of riches, the backmen are the closest we have to having excess of, all others we are still deficient in
With where we are at, it becomes difficult to trade for a decent young player. We are unlikely to have a decent draft pick so we would have to give up a decent player in return, with the risk that we would be simply robbing Peter to play Paul.
-

Yep but if one were to nominate Richmond we'd be in a good position to offer someone like an Edwards and realistically probably a sweetener like a draft pick or a younger player who hasn't quite come on like maybe a Mcdonuts. Is very unlikely to happen but that would be a damn good scenario
-
Shiel and Treloar leading the GWS stats..
-
Shiel pls

unbelievable comment.
chaplin - 30 yr old battler.
grimes - third tall battler.
astbury - injury riddled kpd.
elton - kpd another fwd we hope becomes a defender has not shown a lot to date.
rance - only decent tall defender we have.
the tall defensive stocks imo are dire. if rance does go they become worse than dire. not only are the numbers low the quality is clearly lacking.
was all for taking durdin lever or even goddard with pick 12 and the above is the reason why. durdin and lever imo had the quality about them to warrant useing pick 12.
-
Treloar leading possessions 26, Shiel 21.
-
Treloar finished with 32 possessions, 1 goal, 5 marks and 5 tackles..
Shiel finished with 28 possessions, 1 goal, 6 marks and 3 tackles..
-
Wrong club look at the other club in Syd.
DH would look good in tiger colours.
-
Hearing that Patrick Dangerfield has put on a bit of a show in Adelaide today? As for DH we were into him last year from what I know.

Don't agree with you Claw don't see a problem in our backline. You keep saying we got issues there but you don't have the facts to back it up.How many big forwards have got a hold of us last 2 yrs not many at all yes sometimes those crumber forwards. Our bacline for me is in the top 5 in the afl.You can't expect stars in every position.Take a look at the Dockers have they got a star studded back line besides Mcpharlin who is 33.Rance has been the best one on one defender last 2 seasons in the comp and you still say he can't play on the big monster forwards.
-
Whatever we do its not good enough.
One day we'll win the flag and even then some won't be happy.
It's like the Collingwood finals failure mystique. It's better for them to draw or lose a game in the most compelling of circumstances. Colliwobbles. Winning a GF in October than just winning.
Same with us we just wait for the good start then wait for us to hit the wall and then fall over.
I told you so, I told you so I told you so.
It's not about being a darksider or whatever. I hurt last year too during the first half read my posts
but it all aint doom and gloom.
-
Its like life, all about the journey and the here and now.
For 6 hours Thursday night all the troubles and ?s vanished and all that existed was that moment with the Tigers.
Dont worry, I get as frustrated as anyone sometimes and live for a flag.
But Im gunna enjoy it as much as I can until then.
Cant wait for Saturday arvo at the G next week :gotigers

GWS star Shiel stays coy on future
Nat Edwards April 6, 2015 8:30 AM
I won't lie, it's always hard obviously with family down in Melbourne and friends but like any player you go through challenges
Dylan Shiel
EMERGING GWS midfielder Dylan Shiel insists ongoing contract talks won’t be a distraction for him this season as he weighs up his future.
The 22-year-old Victorian is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to re-sign with the Giants, who are keen to shore up their stock of young stars.
Shiel had a career-best season last year, averaging 23 possessions and five tackles per game.
His speed, power and ability to the break the lines is a tantalising prospect for any team, in particular several Victorian-based clubs who will be hoping to lure the midfielder back home.
After the Giants’ season-opening win against St Kilda, Shiel said he was "pretty happy" at GWS but admitted it was difficult living away from his family.
"At the moment I'm just looking forward to playing out the year. I'll leave the negotiations to my manager and the Giants, but all good signs so far," Shiel told AFL.com.au.
"I won't lie, it's always hard obviously with family down in Melbourne and friends but like any player you go through challenges.
"I feel like the club is really good at understanding the wellbeing of the players. Everyone has a really good lifestyle here at the club.”
Shiel, who was one of the Giants' best players in the nine-point win over St Kilda on Sunday with 28 disposals and six clearances, said he was bullish about the club's future.
"We're a real tight bunch at Greater Western Sydney. The more we play together, the stronger the bond we build, so we are starting to develop really strong relationships,” he said.
Retaining young talent will continue to be a challenge for the Giants.
The club has lost key position players Kristian Jaksch and Tom Boyd, and midfielder Dom Tyson, to their home states in recent years.
However, the Giants have been buoyed by the re-signing of Victorian natives Jeremy Cameron and Devon Smith this year.
Also out-of-contract at the end of 2015 are Adam Treloar, who is originally from Melbourne, and West Australian Stephen Coniglio.
