Tigers on verge of signing Crazy deal
05 October 2005
Herald Sun

RICHMOND is poised to sign a lucrative sponsorship deal with mobile phone magnate "Crazy" John Ilhan.
The two parties are in discussions and are expected to finalise an agreement for the 2006 season and beyond by Christmas.
The Tigers are already well supported by joint major sponsors Motorola and the Australian Finance Group, but Mr Ilhan, a life-long Richmond supporter, says he is willing to pour millions of dollars into the club he loves.
"I've been waiting for a major (sponsorship) but it's never really come up. So we're going to go in there anyway at some level and get involved," he said yesterday.
"We've tried a few times before and it didn't work out – but now we'll be there for the long haul."
The 39-year-old said few people at Tigerland realised he was a die-hard supporter until his name emerged during last year's bitter boardroom dispute.
He has since met with coach Terry Wallace and chief executive Steve Wright to discuss a number of options, including signage rights at Punt Rd Oval.
Ilhan said he was also interested in joining the Richmond board in coming years. "If the opportunity was there and I was asked, I'd love to – they're my team, " he said.
Crazy John's has an existing sponsorship deal with Collingwood.
Richmond's off-field fortunes have soared since the TAC withdrew its major sponsorship in April.

Crazy John's Oval :o. He tried it over at Subi but the local council knocked it on the head.

I wonder if he's buried the hatchet with Casey and bought a RFC membership after last year doing a Rex ;).

Sarge should run for the board then. This is all his doing lol ;D

Excellent news, more money,1-2 Mill extra a year would be good :thumbsup

Sorry I hate to rain on this blokes parade but if he was such a diehard why wasn't he a member? IIRC he's never been a member.

Refer my first comment.
I have to admit that I don't get very excited when I hear Mr Illhan's "Crazy John's" mentioned. History tells us he has always been a "gonna" rather than a "doer". He's been gonna do lots of things but they never seem to happen. Call me cynical but I will believe it when it happens ::)
If it does happen I doubt very much it will be $1-2 million. That would mean major sponsor status and that position is very very well filled by Motorola & AFG. It would have to be the next tier down. As for renaming Punt Road Oval - er.............no way >:( :banghead
-
He's not a friend of yours I take it WP LMAO.
I hope the oval stays the same too.
-
What sort of Richmond supporter willingly gives money to Collingwood is what I'd like to know? :help :rollin
-
We'll just do that Collingwood does, have a ton of major sponsors! :rollin

:lol :lol No - made a fair call there Rodger - I will admit to not being the president of his fan club ;)
-
In the past week a HUGE CJ billboard has been added and now covers the whole front of the scoreboard on the outer wing of Punt Road Oval. So he's getting his monies worth.
-
The club should see if John Ilhan wants to buy Naming rights to Punt Road Oval. Crazy Johns Park lol...He'd probably cough up $2 million for a 5 year deal. Considering the state of our finances the club should look at it.
-
is chipping in 200k a year atm :shh

I'm with you WP. Punt Road Oval is sacred. Let's not go down the Pies and Blues' path of selling our soul for 30 pieces for silver. Renaming Princes Park Optus Oval didn't make Carlton financially safe forever.

boys boys boys cmon get with the program.
money talks and bulltish walks
if we want to compete with the big boys in attracting the right coaching staff, and luring the right players and more importantly keeping the right players we have to pay them.
If selling the naming rights for punt road oval means we can do that, then I for 1 am all for it, boots and all.
We need to become a financial power to compete, its just that simple ! :banghead
-
Yeah get with the program boyz :cheers , we all know that our supporters will always call it Punt Rd but seriously if we could get $2 million (particularly upfront from John Ilhan) for a 5 year naming rights deal we MUST do it. The club cant stay in debt and getting a massive one off financial bonus would be fantastic. Im sure Steve Wright would support it, and to be honest in the end, it would be worth more than $2 million because wed be paying less on our overdraft. If for example our financing is running at 10% a year then wed automatically reduce our interest bill by $200,000 a year. MAJOR DOLLARS GENTLEMEN, MAJOR DOLLARS!

$2 million from the AFL's media rights deal without any need for gimmicks would also help clear our debts. Remember unlike the Roos, Dogs and Dees we created our own problems from being incompetent for 25 years. Now through getting our act together we've managed to attract Wallace, Miller, Wright, Browny, Simmonds and co without needing to sell our soul.

I don't think we had any problem attracting the right coaching staff because we seem to have the right fit for the Club now. It says on another thread we paid the smallest amount in 2005 to the footy department and I reckon we had a bloody good year considering where we came from. the Pies spent a truckload and where did they finish again.
As for keeping players. I don't think selling naming rights for the Oval is going to make much difference. The competition has a salary cap so we will always be limited in what we can pay.
If they want to put the Crazy John logo on the roof of the Dyer stand for =$500k then please go right ahead
I'll pose this question if Crazy Johns was to offer the club $1 million to wear a pink jumper with his logo on it with turquoise shorts at a home game at the MCG against the pies would you take that cash? I doubt many people would say YES.... there are some things that are just to important to mess with IMO
To call Punt Road Oval anything but Punt Road Oval :banghead :banghead - I am sorry for me at least it is a resounding No-Way
-
Nothing to do with us but on the topic of Naming Rights, the Saints have become the next club to rename their old base. Moorabbin is now Linen House Oval. Just rolls off the tongue :P
Any new or change of views either way over Naming Rights at Punt Rd?
-
Moorabbin is now Schizen House Oval. Just roles off the tongue :P
Rolls off the tongue better now.
Hope I'm allowed to do that. :-[ :gotigers

That's because what you posted is officially correct. :whistle
I just thought my minor adjustment was more fitting. :-X
I found out later there actually is a company called Shizen. ;D Vic Park is still available for their House to sponsor.

The hardware store around the corner is called Abbotsford Tools. They could stick their logo on the back as well lol

I'm against renaming Punt Rd Oval anyway but we'd want more than that wouldn't we? :-\
