Crazy John's to sign up as sponsor

Tigers on verge of signing Crazy deal
05 October 2005
Herald Sun
Michael Warner

RICHMOND is poised to sign a lucrative sponsorship deal with mobile phone magnate "Crazy" John Ilhan.

The two parties are in discussions and are expected to finalise an agreement for the 2006 season and beyond by Christmas.

The Tigers are already well supported by joint major sponsors Motorola and the Australian Finance Group, but Mr Ilhan, a life-long Richmond supporter, says he is willing to pour millions of dollars into the club he loves.

"I've been waiting for a major (sponsorship) but it's never really come up. So we're going to go in there anyway at some level and get involved," he said yesterday.

"We've tried a few times before and it didn't work out – but now we'll be there for the long haul."

The 39-year-old said few people at Tigerland realised he was a die-hard supporter until his name emerged during last year's bitter boardroom dispute.

He has since met with coach Terry Wallace and chief executive Steve Wright to discuss a number of options, including signage rights at Punt Rd Oval.

Ilhan said he was also interested in joining the Richmond board in coming years. "If the opportunity was there and I was asked, I'd love to – they're my team, " he said.

Crazy John's has an existing sponsorship deal with Collingwood.

Richmond's off-field fortunes have soared since the TAC withdrew its major sponsorship in April.

Crazy John's Oval :o. He tried it over at Subi but the local council knocked it on the head.

I wonder if he's buried the hatchet with Casey and bought a RFC membership after last year doing a Rex ;).

Sorry I hate to rain on this blokes parade but if he was such a diehard why wasn't he a member? IIRC he's never been a member.

Refer my first comment.

I have to admit that I don't get very excited when I hear Mr Illhan's "Crazy John's" mentioned. History tells us he has always been a "gonna" rather than a "doer". He's been gonna do lots of things but they never seem to happen. Call me cynical but I will believe it when it happens ::)

If it does happen I doubt very much it will be $1-2 million. That would mean major sponsor status and that position is very very well filled by Motorola & AFG. It would have to be the next tier down. As for renaming Punt Road Oval - er.............no way  >:( :banghead

What sort of Richmond supporter willingly gives money to Collingwood is what I'd like to know?  :help :rollin

In the past week a HUGE CJ billboard has been added and now covers the whole front of the scoreboard on the outer wing of Punt Road Oval. So he's getting his monies worth.

The club should see if John Ilhan wants to buy Naming rights to Punt Road Oval. Crazy Johns Park lol...He'd probably cough up $2 million for a 5 year deal. Considering the state of our finances the club should look at it.

I'm with you WP. Punt Road Oval is sacred. Let's not go down the Pies and Blues' path of selling our soul for 30 pieces for silver. Renaming Princes Park Optus Oval didn't make Carlton financially safe forever.

boys boys boys cmon get with the program.

money talks and bulltish walks

if we want to compete with the big boys in attracting the right coaching staff, and luring the right players and more importantly keeping the right players we have to pay them.

If selling the naming rights for punt road oval means we can do that, then I  for 1 am all for it, boots and all.

We need to become a financial power to compete, its just that simple ! :banghead
