Any chance it will be held at Geelong instead of the MCG.

Seems to be some rumblings about that.

Keeping a lid on it for now.
After this weekend if we go into that game as favourites, then I will know 100% we are being setup.

I think after 10 years of losing to these pricks what better way then to break a hoodoo then in an important final, but ill believe when I see

I don't rate the Giants much in Melbourne, reckon the winner of our QF goes on to the granny. Loser goes through Sydney and Adelaide. Don't really want to be on that side one bit.

1 membership = 1 ticket

You will have to wait until 2pm when GA goes on sale and won't require your membership.

Are they? I'm not certain, I just selected Richmond members allocation and category 3 (as it was level 1) and the bays behind the Punt Rd end goals went away but the Ponsford ones stayed green except for the bay directly behind the goal which I guess is reserved for cheer squad. Generally the home team get the Punt Rd end (except for Collingwood) so I just assumed this was the case. Of course I could be completely wrong (entirely likely) and bay allocation will correct once they actually go on sale tomorrow.

Cub is right. Go the punt rd end option near the cheersquad. Thats where im aiming for, or as a back up on the 50m arc at the pint rd end.

Cub and dooks were correct  :thumbsup bays updated after 9. Got cat 2 M2 lol. Was going to refresh and wait but before I committed those and went back I saw two bays blank out. I was hoping for something around M10 but remembered cub mention cheer squad is M3 so that should be fun. The old man has been wanting to join the cheer squad for years so I reckon he might take the opportunity to chat to a few.

Damien Hardwick has complete faith in his Richmond team telling them to embrace finals hype

GLENN McFARLANE,
Herald Sun
31 August 2017

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has told his players to embrace the hype of playing in front of a near-capacity MCG crowd in Friday week’s qualifying final against Geelong, saying he has an unwavering faith in the best team he has coached.

Having lost three knockout finals in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Hardwick insisted this 2017 version is a far more trustworthy, resilient group which plays a brand of football well suited to September.

“This side is a lot better,” Hardwick said when asked to compare his finals teams. “(They are) more consistent, they play a game style I feel is certainly finals calibre ... the personnel, the leadership and the way they play the game ... is going to hold us in good stead.”

“We play a high pressure game, a high contested game, a high tackle game. Those are the sort of things that finals footy is all about.

“Our guys love it ... it is not the prettiest game that we play at certain stages, but it is certainly fast and physical and pressured. They are a lot better than what I have coached in the past.”

Hardwick revealed he sometimes goes home at night to watch vision with his children, marvelling at the transformation the team has made since missing the finals last season, something that almost cost him his job.

“I want our guys to embrace the hype of the finals series, there are 10 other sides wishing they could be us and seven others,” he said. “I was one of those guys who was like ‘don’t pay attention to the hype’, but you know what, it is not often you get there, so enjoy it.

“I get nervous, don’t get me wrong. I get anxious about all that, then I look at our team board and I look at the players who have delivered in spades for us all year.

“I’ve got players in our VFL side smashing it at the moment, so it is an exciting place to be.”

I'm thinking of this game
This is our biggest game in 30 odd years
Will we absorb the pressure and come out victorius and let the circus consume us.

Can already see the cats staying low key in the lead up and Ricond being Apollo Creed vs Drago fight

Inb4 selwood gets named last minute and the bye killed our momemtum

The public ticket allocation has been exhausted.  Any unused club, AFL or function seats will be sold via Ticketek on September 5 at 2.00pm.

CAR PARKING ADVICE

With a large crowd expected, and some areas of Yarra Park likely to be too wet to accommodate vehicles, car parking will be severely limited.

Drivers should arrive as early as possible, or seek an alternative transport method, as space will fill before match time.

Special offer: Footy fans can also park at Le Garage (114 Flinders St) at a discounted rate of $8 by scanning your event ticket at the pay station.

Arrive early

Security measures such as bag checks and patron scanning will again be in place as fans make their way into the stadium.

This process will take time, so please be patient - and limit the number of bags you bring. Each bag will be inspected, so the more bags you bring the longer it will take.

It is recommended that fans arrive by around 6.30pm, as those who arrive later may miss the the teams run out and/or the start of the match.

Help us help you

Security and event staff are doing an important job, so please help them by co-operating at all times.

Be our eyes and ears: If you see something you think is suspicious, immediately inform event staff, a security guard or police.

AFL: Cats’ home away from home

Michelangelo Rucci,
The Advertiser
4 September 2017

THE Advertiser’s Chief Football Writer Michelangelo Rucci takes a look at Geelong’s ‘home’ battle against Richmond ‘away’ at the MCG on Friday night.

GEELONG v RICHMOND

Qualifying final, MCG, Friday, 7.20pm

DOES SELWOOD PLAY?

GEELONG captain Joel Selwood trained strongly on Saturday as the midfielder seeks to prove he is fit to play in Friday’s qualifying final against Richmond.

He has missed three matches since suffering a syndesmosis ankle injury in the latter stages of the home loss to Sydney at Kardinia Park on August 4.

Selwood says he expects to see his name in the Geelong line-up on Thursday - and is optimistic it will stay there when the team sheets are lodged at the MCG on Friday evening.

Re-establishing the Selwood-Patrick Dangerfield partnership in the midfield for the first time in 35 days is critical to enhancing Geelong’s odds of advancing to an MCG preliminary final, even if the record books show the Cats have won three from three without Selwood.
Patrick Dangerfield of the Cats chats to Trent Cotchin of the Tigers.

IS THE MCG “HOME”?

GEELONG is the “home” team in this final at the MCG where third-ranked Richmond is more at home.

The Cats have a 3-2 win-loss record at the MCG this season (where the Tigers have chalked up a 9-2 count this season).

Head-to-head, Geelong has won the past eight games against Richmond at the MCG since 2002.

Geelong has worked up a lucky 13-game run against the Tigers.

So, the MCG should not be seen as limiting the Cats’ prospects of advancing from this double-chance final.

Geelong has won four of its past six finals a the MCG - and the biggest lesson from the last one, the preliminary final against Sydney, is not to make a bad start.

CAN TIGERS WIN A FINAL?

AT least there is a safety net under Richmond this year.

For those who are not immersed in the Tigers’ recent record in September - the month that has tormented Richmond fans for too long - the club’s moving theme song has not been heard at the end of a final since September 15, 2001 (semi-final win against Carlton).

Since then, Richmond has lost the 2001 preliminary final (to Brisbane), 2013 elimination final (to the ninth-ranked Carlton), the 2014 elimination final (to Port Adelaide) and the 2015 elimination final (to North Melbourne).

This time, there is a next week, either a home semi-final against Sydney or Essendon or a home preliminary final.
Newly re-signed Tiger Dustin Martin congratulates Dan Butler during the recent loss to Geelong.

CAN THAT ATTACK WORK?

RICHMOND has defied the doubts by winning while building a “small” attack around key forward Jack Riewoldt and working a thin ruck battery around Sydney recruit Toby Nankervis.

The Tigers have averaged 91 points this season.

But, as is often the case, the attention on Richmond’s different look in attack has overshadowed the new strength in the Tigers’ game - defence. All-Australian captain Alex Rance and his crew have conceded an average 76.3 points this season (ranking second in the AFL) - a significant 22-point improvement on last season.

And what do they say of defence in finals?

It is vital and a key pointer to a prospective premiership team. Some may question if it is a year too soon for the Tigers?

The club’s fans will say it is more than two decades too late.

Tigers Grand Final-bound if they beat the Cats: Derm

By Justin Talent
SEN
4 September 2017

Five-time Hawthorn premiership forward Dermott Brereton believes Richmond will play in their first Grand Final in 35 years if they are to defeat Geelong in their upcoming qualifying final.

If the Tigers were to break a 13-game losing streak against the Cats and win the club’s first final since 2001 in front of over 97,000 fans at the MCG next Friday night, they would most likely host an interstate team in a preliminary final two weeks later.

Brereton, who has tipped the Tigers over the Cats solely because of the venue, says he would back Richmond to win a home preliminary final should it eventuate and clinch a remarkable Grand Final berth.

“If the Tigers win this, they are playing in the 2017 Grand Final,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“A home prelim at the G against more than likely an interstate team. They’ll play Grand Final day if they win. I’m convinced.”

David King however thinks that Geelong will continue their dominance over the Tigers, believing they match up very well against them.

He also holds doubts whether Richmond can overcome any potential mental challenges the high stakes game could throw at them.

“I think Geelong will win this and I think they may win it quite well,” the North Melbourne premiership player said.

“I think Geelong, unfortunately for Richmond, match up really well. Head to head, you put the magnets together...if they can can clamp (Trent) Cotchin and clamp (Dustin) Martin, look out.

“It will be a mental challenge for the Tiges, and let’s be honest, they have failed that mental challenge in the past three finals.”

While Brereton says that Richmond’s coaching group will be shying away from reminding the team of their recent finals stumbles, he concedes that they may still be susceptible to mental fragility late in the game if the contest is close.

“You wouldn’t want to get to three-quarter time and hold a single figure lead if you were the Tiges and Geelong have kicked the last three,” he said.

“That would be hard for them to get over.”

Mark Robinson has tipped Richmond, believing their pace will get them over the line.

“Richmond thinks that with speed of ball movement and speed of legs, they can get them,” he said.

Geelong won the their only home-and-away meeting this year by 14 points at Simonds Stadium in Round 21.

AFL finals 2017: Five key talking points for blockbuster qualifying final between Geelong and Richmond

LACHIE YOUNG,
Geelong Advertiser
4 September 2017

WE may not get a true indication regarding whether Joel Selwood plays on Friday night until much closer to game time. In the meantime, LACHIE YOUNG looks at five talking points that could have a huge bearing on the outcome of the match.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES PLAYING ON THE MCG MAKE?

The Tigers play a different brand of football at the MCG and their 9-2 record there this year reflects that. The Cats meanwhile have gone 3-2 (all bar one against teams that finished outside the eight), with two of those wins against Hawthorn and Collingwood coming in unconvincing fashion. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest the MCG gives Richmond a two-goal advantage, so if the 14-point margin at Simonds Stadium is anything to go by then this could be another very tight qualifying final. The size of the MCG concerns the Cats because it doesn’t let them squeeze the opposition in the same manner as Simonds Stadium does. They will have spent some time out at Deakin University — where the dimensions are identical to the ‘G — in order to become accustomed to the wider expanses, but it will be crucial that Richmond’s midfielders and small forwards aren’t allowed too much space to run.

WHERE DOES HARRY TAYLOR PLAY?

Besides Jack Riewoldt, who has had a stellar year, Richmond does not pose too great a threat to Geelong inside its attacking 50 when it comes to key forwards. The Tigers have a vast spread of fleet-footed smalls who will cause some headaches, but with Riewoldt the only big man, it frees up one of Tom Lonergan, Lachie Henderson or, most likely, Harry Taylor, to go forward. Taylor has been used as a swingman all season but against the Tigers he spent the majority of his afternoon deep inside 50 and kicked five goals on Alex Rance. With Tom Hawkins back in the side, however, it will be interesting to see how Chris Scott utilises what could be the ace up his sleeve. Perhaps Hawkins will spend more time up the field in a similar manner to what he did with great effect against Carlton. The key though for whoever ends up on Rance is to isolate him and not allow the All-Australian captain the freedom to move off his opponent and intercept kicks inside 50.

HOW MUCH DOES THE RECORD COUNT?

Tom Lonergan doesn’t believe it will mean much and you can guarantee Chris Scott thinks the same thing. Yes, Geelong may have won the past 13 clashes between the Cats and the Tigers, but it’s a new ball game on Friday night with higher stakes than any time since the 1995 preliminary final. This might be true, but it is difficult to imagine how such a record wouldn’t slip into the minds of players if the scores are close late in the fourth quarter. Even if it is only minuscule, any slight advantage that Geelong’s dominance over Richmond might have in such an important match should be seized upon. Besides that, Richmond has also lost its only three finals under Damien Hardwick, while the Cats, while far from perfect under Scott, have some seasoned finals campaigners who should be able to provide a calming influence to their younger teammates.

WHO PLAYS ON DUSTIN MARTIN?

Only twice has Dustin Martin had fewer disposals this season than when he played against Geelong in Round 21. A big part of the reason for that was because of the work that Cam Guthrie did in quelling Martin’s influence when he played on the ball. It happened to be one of the Geelong midfielder’s better games in 2017 because he also got dangerous himself as well as stopping the Brownlow Medal favourite. When Martin went forward, first-year defender Tom Stewart did a superb job in limiting his efficiency, despite the fact the $8 million man finished with two goals. Scott Selwood is always an option to lock down on Martin through the middle of the ground, but Chris Scott may prefer he goes to Trent Cotchin, and given the success Guthrie and Stewart had at Simonds Stadium it would not be surprising to see that pair given first crack again.

HOW IMPORTANT IS ZAC SMITH?

The Geelong ruckman has finished the home-and-away season off in fine form, with his final five weeks sure to earn him a boost in the club best-and-fairest count later in the year. Smith has flourished as the number one big man for the Cats and while he will not learn until later in the week if Rhys Stanley or Wylie Buzza will play the pinch-hitting role while he is resting, his main focus will be on Richmond’s Toby Nankervis. Ivan Soldo also played against Geelong in Round 21 — his most recent senior match — but Nankervis has been the main man at Punt Rd all year. Smith matches up well on the former Swan, especially when it comes to hit outs (31.3 v 24.1), effective disposals (10.7 v 8.9), clearances (4.1 v 2.9) and score involvements (4.4 v 4.1). If he can get on top and give first use of the ball to Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan and Joel Selwood (if he plays) it will go a long way to helping Geelong secure a win.

Martin a key for AFL's Tigers: Dangerfield

SBS
5 September 2017

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield says his Richmond counterpart Dustin Martin has been the best player in the AFL this year.

The two midfield dynamos are certain to be central figures in Friday's night's huge qualifying final at the MCG.

They are also the short-priced favourites to poll the most votes in the 2017 Brownlow Medal count, although Dangerfield is ineligible to win the award for a second straight year due to suspension.

"(Martin) has certainly had an outstanding season - he's a real key component to Richmond playing really good footy," said Dangerfield, who reaches the 200-game milestone this weekend.

"That's only natural - he's been the best player in the competition.

"The challenge for us as a side is to nullify his impact."

Versatile defender Tom Stewart and onballer Cam Guthrie did a pretty good job limiting Martin's output the only previous time the teams met this year - back in round 21 when the Cats got up by 14 points at Simonds Stadium for a 13th straight win over the Tigers.

Even so, the Richmond star had 21 possessions and booted two goals.

Dangerfield said the Cats could not afford to become too Martin-conscious on Friday night.

"He's one player and they've got 21 others who will take to the field on Friday and that's been the reason behind their success this year - it hasn't just been one player," said the 27-year-old Cat.

"We've got to be very wary of the other players they have within their side.

"While he's obviously an integral part of it he's by no means the only reason they've been successful."

With only six points separating the top six teams on the ladder at the conclusion of the home and away season, Dangerfield agreed that it was the most wide-open premiership race in many years.

"I don't think there's any team that is saying `we're the best in the competition, we've won the majority of games we've played this year and we've finished on top of the ladder by a country mile'," he said.

"I think we saw last year with the way the Western Bulldogs handled the finals series that if you get it right for long enough anything is possible.

"Absolutely it's open and it gives every team great confidence, not just those teams who finished in the top four."

The winner of the clash between second-placed Geelong and third-ranked Richmond goes straight through to the preliminary final while the loser will take on either Sydney or Essendon in a cut-throat semi.

Mega-preview: Second qualifying final, Geelong v Richmond

afl.com.au
5 September 2017

SUMMARY

The stakes could hardly be higher for two teams that have failed to make the most of their finals appearances in recent seasons. Richmond lost three straight elimination finals between 2013-15, while Geelong has failed to make a Grand Final from three qualifying final appearances in the past four years. The Cats will be favoured on the back of an imposing recent record between the teams, but the MCG will feel like home to the Tigers on Friday night. Their success starved fans will turn up in force for the club's first qualifying final since 2001, hoping to see them win their first since 1980. Fans will be treated to a battle between superstar midfielders Patrick Dangerfield and Dustin Martin.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Friday September 8, 7.50pm
AEST

WHAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR?

Round 21: Geelong 11.14 (80) d Richmond 9.12 (66) at Simonds Stadium

Despite missing injured captain Joel Selwood and suspended pair Tom Hawkins and Mitch Duncan, the Cats found a way to win in a cauldron-like atmosphere at home. Harry Taylor was the star, kicking four goals and keeping Alex Rance out of the action. The Tigers were beaten up in the midfield, losing contested ball by 18.

LAST FIVE TIMES

R21, 2017, Geelong 11.14 (80) d Richmond 9.12 (66) at Simonds Stadium
R21, 2016, Geelong 10.22 (82) d Richmond 12.6 (78) at the MCG
R5, 2015, Geelong 12.13 (85) d Richmond 11.10 (76) at the MCG
R7, 2014, Geelong 11.15 (81) d Richmond 12.4 (76) at the MCG
R6, 2013, Geelong 20.11 (131) d Richmond 13.9 (87) at the MCG

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Geelong

1. Sam Menegola is in top form and will be dangerous as a high half-forward, sitting corridor side at midfield stoppages. He has the tank to push up as an extra midfielder but also race back towards goal, kicking five goals in the past two weeks.

2. The Cats' defensive midfield match-ups will be crucial. Cameron Guthrie is the best option for Dustin Martin, with Tom Stewart the likely man when 'Dusty' is forward. Scott Selwood has a good record against Trent Cotchin.

3. Harry Taylor was the match-winner as a defensive forward on Alex Rance in round 21, kicking four goals. Tom Hawkins will play, but Taylor could still swing forward and try and get to Rance given the success of the match-up.

Richmond
1. Dustin Martin ran off the back of the square for a number of centre bounces in round 23. Watch for the Tigers to mix up his starting positions and use the superstar midfielder as a deep forward.

2. Dion Prestia plays his best football when he is working off an opponent. His best games have been in run-with roles this season and a match-up on Joel Selwood could suit the former Sun.

3. First-year midfielder Jack Graham has been a tackling machine in two games and watch for the hard-bodied 19-year-old to hit in hard at stoppages as a battering ram for his teammates.

THE SIX POINTS

1. Geelong continues to dominate Richmond, winning the last 13 matches daying back to the Tigers' last win in round nine, 2006. The Tigers haven't defeated the Cats at the MCG since 1999.

2. Richmond finished the home and away season with the third-best defence, conceding 76 points a game and giving up 100 points in a game only twice.

3. There is a big difference in finals experience between these sides. Geelong has a combined 185 games compared to Richmond’s 65. Chris Scott has coached in 11 finals for five wins, while Damien Hardwick is winless from three finals.

4. Both teams were strong during the home and away season for marks inside 50, with Richmond ranked second (14 a game) and Geelong fourth (13.1).

5. Richmond's small forwards have been terrific this season but were shut down in round 21 by the Cats. Jason Castagna, Dan Butler and Daniel Rioli kicked just one goal between them, with Butler and Rioli sharing seven possessions.

6. Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis ranks No.181 overall in the Schick AFL Player Ratings and has been on on a steep climb from No.525 at the start of the season. He'll go up against Geelong big man Zac Smith (No.63 overall), who had his measure in round 21.

WHAT THE COACHES SAY

Chris Scott: "I don't think previous performance makes too much difference to future performance. Sometimes teams match up OK against different teams. I don't think that's the situation with us and Richmond … it's preferable to have played well against them in the recent past."

Damien Hardwick: "The distraction is going to be there, the media noise and all this sort of stuff. And we accept it, we haven't got a good record against Geelong. But we also know that if we play our best we're capable of beating anyone. So that'll be acknowledged and our players understand that."

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Patrick Dangerfield

The Geelong superstar plays his 200th game and ninth final with so much riding on his shoulders. The Brownlow medallist was enormous in the 2016 finals, winning 39 possessions (21 contested) and nine clearances in the preliminary final loss to Sydney. There is no doubt he will perform on the big stage. Can he bring his teammates with him?

Choco: I’m certain Richmond are going to win

By SEN
5 September 2017

Former Richmond assistant coach Mark Williams says the Tigers are certainties to defeat Geelong in this Friday night’s Qualifying Final.

Despite losing to the Cats by 14-points last month, Williams believes Damien Hardwick will use that game as a learning experience and it’ll ignite them to victory this week. The 2004 premiership coach is also of the notion the Tigers’ top-tier players will produce a better output than they did in Round 21.

“I’m certain Richmond are going to win,” he told SEN Afternoons.

“They played them last month and Dustin Martin had 21 touches, kicked two goals and got tagged a bit. He will learn from that. Trent Cotchin will play better and all the young forwards didn’t contribute that day. I think they were overawed, I reckon it was a big deal for them, a newer environment, a small skinny ground…things that suit a team who has been there a couple times, like Geelong.

“The small forwards will show a bit this time.”

Williams also believes the injection of former Greater Western Sydney hard nut Jacob Townsend, who kicked 11 goals in the final two home-and-away matches, will be a major plus for Richmond.

“He [Townsend] is probably the equal-toughest player on the ground,” he said.

Fairly relaxed about this one, win, lose or draw as long as we give a good account of ourselves...it's the next final I'm nervous about....prelim puts us in touching distance and we don't really know yet whether having two byes is a good or bad but judging by last year.it's the latter....qualifying final and all the pressures on not to go out in straight sets and be a laughing stock for at least another year with the finals albatross only getting heavier again....if it's Sydney they'll likely still be in red hot form and have already rolled us on the G this year when they probably weren't even as good...and I couldn't imagine anything worse than being knocked out by Essendon....on the flip side, if last year does indeed prove not to be the exception but the rule with the bye week then taking the long route could well be an advantage in the prelim & then hopefully the GF.... :shh

Dio, I get the logic but can't help but think a win on Friday night will turn the entire final series on its head for us. The belief and guarantee of another MCG final places us in a very strong position to play in a GF. Lose, and the monkey becomes a silverback...

Hmm....we came out strong in 2015. I'd prefer that start. Absolute worst case scenerio is for us to immediately give up a 5 goal lead. I keep hearing they're absolutely firing down at the Cattery....whatever that means.

The opposition's view: Chapman saying Geelong will again try to pressure us upfield into turnovers and restrict our inside 50s so our quick small forwards are taken out of the game.

Former Geelong great Paul Chapman says the Cats must start well and be the hunters against Richmond

LACHIE YOUNG,
Geelong Advertiser
September 6, 2017

STARTING well and testing the mettle of Richmond’s younger players on Friday night will be the key to Geelong’s chances of advancing to a preliminary final according to former club champion Paul Chapman.

The Cats lost six first quarters from nine matches against top eight teams this season, winning just two and drawing another.

In those games they averaged 16.8 and conceded 26.4 in the opening terms, giving up leads of three goals or more on five occasions.

Chapman said if Geelong could gain an early lead it had the potential to put the Tigers under the pump from the outset and allow the Cats to play proactive rather than reactive football.

“Obviously the start is a big one, and even though Geelong is a lot younger team than what it used to be they have still got that finals experience over Richmond, so I think a fast start would test Richmond out and see what they’re about mentally,” Chapman said.

“Getting off to a good start is probably the biggest thing they can control and then testing Richmond to see how they go in big games, I mean finals football is totally different.

“The speed and intensity steps up so they need to bring that to them early.”

Geelong midfielder Patrick Dangerfield spoke this week of the need for his team to improve its poor starts, with the seven goals to nothing start in last year’s preliminary final still fresh in his mind.

Chapman said the way the Cats played against GWS in Round 23 sent a statement to the competition, and added they would again have to play the role of the hunters against Richmond on Friday night and not become the hunted in front of 90,000 people at the MCG.

“The back six is really good but Geelong’s forward line and their midfield will have to bring a heap of pressure to help out the defence,” he said.

“It’s about taking the ball off Richmond before they get a chance to take it inside their forward 50, because their forward line players have been very good this year in keeping the ball in and wanting to tackle and doing all of those one percenters.

“So if Geelong can limit their entries, then you start dictating things anyway and their forwards won’t be able to do that.

“There were three weeks were they (the Cats) had no tackles and I think they learnt a lot from that. Scott Selwood was brought in and he has been a tackling machine, but it’s going to be a cracking game of footy.”

The wet could help Richmond but the Cats are back to their contested best

CAMERON MOONEY,
Geelong Advertiser
6 September 2017

WHO is going to benefit the most if the forecast rain dumps down on the MCG on Friday night?

One of the best things I have liked about Geelong this year has been the return of the contested beast.

For years, during the premiership reign, winning the contested ball was part of the Cats’ DNA.

It was a non-negotiable, driven by blokes such as Joel Selwood and Joel Corey, but in recent years that dominance has tapered off and, so too, has the side’s performances.

Geelong was the No.1 contested ball team in the AFL in 2007, 2008 and 2009, but slipped to 10th in 2014, 15th in 2015 and bounced back to fifth last year. This year it is fourth and continuing to improve.

It’s the type of game plan tweak under Chris Scott, coupled with the addition of Patrick Dangerfield, that has Geelong primed for the hardened battle of finals footy, especially on a night like Friday when the slippery conditions mean the ball is going to be on the deck a bit more.

Not to forget the inclusion of Selwood, whose return will give his teammates such a boost.

The question mark on the Cats has been their ability to defend the bigger, wider ground of the MCG and they have been guilty at times of getting a bit lost on the flanks and turning the ball over with shallow entries inside forward 50.

So that’s one thing they will need to be mindful of again.

WHY THE WET COULD HELP RICHMOND

All year we’ve talked about their forward line and how the dynamic mix of Daniel Rioli (179cm), Dan Butler (182cm) Jason Castagna (181cm), Shai Bolton (175cm), Sam Lloyd (180cm) and the returning Josh Caddy (186cm) at the foot of Jack Riewoldt has given the Tigers a high-pressured mix at ground level.

You have to think the conditions will suit those players with the ball being on the ground more often and hack kicks into the forward line.

Geelong’s defence is taller, so once the ball hits the ground you would suspect that would benefit the Tigers.

GEELONG’S FORWARD MIX

It probably will not be a night for high marking, so what forward set-up does Geelong roll with?

Tom Hawkins and Harry Taylor should anchor the key position posts, then you assemble the dynamos around them.

I love Wylie Buzza for the way he competes in the air, the way he crashes packs and how he has managed to get shots on goal, but Geelong runs the risk of being top-heavy if he plays and I really fear for his place in the side, purely on team balance. I don’t think you can play all three.

Look for Dangerfield to spend a bit more time forward if the Cats are breaking even in the midfield.

And then there’s Daniel Menzel and Steven Motlop. These two blokes could be among the most important on the ground — Menzel for opportunistic goals, Motlop for breaking away from the congestion.

We’ve seen the pair come into a bit of form in recent weeks after their spell on the sidelines and now is the time for them to do it when it counts.

I’m expecting big things from these two players.
Harry Taylor marks against Alex Rance. Photo: Michael Dodge/Getty Images

THE MATCH-UPS

It’s a case of the two Ds — Dustin v Dangerfield — and the two Cs — captains Selwood v Cotchin.

Taylor gave Alex Rance a bath last time but all great players have off days and Rance is still the best key defender in the game.

I expect him to take Tom Hawkins. In a final, you need to go one-on-one early. The best defender needs to take the best forward. You can adjust after that if things aren’t going to plan.

At the other end, Tom Lonergan needs to take Riewoldt, even if Riewoldt isn’t playing deep forward. Jack is still their No.1 forward and Lonergan is the Cats’ best stopper.

It may end up that Lachie Henderson takes Riewoldt if he pushes too far up the ground, but I’d start Lonergan on him and see how it goes.

THE BYE

Geelong has changed a few things up this past week to avoid a sluggish start. The Cats’ history after a week off isn’t great — yes, they narrowly beat Hawthorn last year in the qualifying final but the Swans wiped them off the park in the preliminary final.

The bye has helped ensure Selwood got up, but it may have also stifled momentum the Cats built in the last three weeks of the season.

How much impact will it have? Time will tell.

Chris Scott admits he is pondering dropping a key tall in response to Richmond’s mosquito fleet and forecast inclement conditions on Friday night.

But Cats prime mover Sam Menegola says Geelong will be ready for “trench warfare” should horrific conditions continue for the MCG qualifying final.

Scott says the Cats are seriously considering how to cover Richmond’s one-tall forward line as they assess the weather forecast — 12C and showers.

If the Cats drop a tall tonight, Wylie Buzza would be the most likely choice given Richmond’s second ruckman is 190cm midfielder Shaun Grigg.

Harry Taylor will start forward and Jake Kolodjashnij will push up onto a wing, with Selwood likely to replace Round 23 inclusion Brandan Parfitt if Buzza stays in.

All of it adds up to a vexing selection decision for Scott, given Buzza has been a revelation with five goals in six games and given real grunt in the ruck.

Menegola told the Herald Sun after training in rain and squally wind this week the Cats were ready for wintry conditions.

Does anyone else have a feeling that we just might be going into this one underdone?

All I keep hearing from the club is that we're taking it easy; just taking it as any other game.

And from Geelong its all focus and readiness.

Always worried about playing after a bye. To win this game we really need a  huge game from the Nank and to win the contested possession. Given the expected weather conditions would be great if they could fit Miles into the team as well. Really hope that our supporters drown out the Geelong supporters to make it a very hostile environment for Geelong.

We are getting heaps of media attention but I dont know how you can justify a comment like that .

Both teams have had 2 weeks off - it's a level playing field .

Richmond have not beaten geelong in 13 attemps and have not won a final under Hardwick.  Don't think anyone will be taking it easy behind closed doors .

I feel like the last final we played we were all about focus and readiness. I think you end up playing too tight.

We just can't afford to go away from what got us here. Fwd pressure, contested ball & taking the game on.

The bye is awful, I was more confident this time last week. Nothing has changed & yet a little doubts creep in.

Spot on, if your too focused for too long in the leadup theres a very real possibility of being emotionally spent by the time gameday arrives - especially given the fact its been a 2 week build up.

I think Miles should play. We need an extra hard body on the inside, particularly if it's going to be soggy.

Weather set to play its part in first finals week

afl.com.au
7 September 2017

Geelong v Richmond, MCG, Friday, 7.50pm AEST

There is a very high chance of showers throughout the day, but skies are expected to clear just in time for this Friday night's blockbuster at the 'G. Despite rain clearing, conditions will still be wintry and overcast. It will also be quite cold, with the lowest temperature predicted to be 7C.

Who it might help: Richmond's small forward line. With just one ruckman, Toby Nankervis, and one primary tall forward target, Jack Riewoldt, the wet conditions are likely to benefit the Tigers' unconventional small forward setup of Daniel Rioli, Dan Butler, Jason Castagna and Jacob Townsend. If Geelong's backline has had one weakness over the past couple of years, it has been defending against small forwards.

Miles comes in at the cost of pace...

Hard to argue though, form is electric. Has no stage fright when it comes to finals.

I'm excited to see what Rioli can produce on Friday. Kid was basically created for this situation. His step and agility is going to be enormous for us, breaking out of congestion in our fwd line. Same could be said of Edwards.

No tag, but Tigers to put 'work' into Danger

afl.com.au
7 September 2017

RICHMOND will try to limit Patrick Dangerfield's effectiveness without running a hard tag on the Geelong superstar, with coach Damien Hardwick declaring an intriguing midfield battle was the key to victory in Friday night's qualifying final.

While the Tigers plot ways to shut down Dangerfield and returning Cats skipper Joel Selwood, Geelong will have its hands full quelling Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin and Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

Dangerfield won 21 of his 30 possessions in the contest when the Cats beat Richmond in round 21, also racking up 11 clearances and eight inside 50s in a brilliant performance.

Hardwick said the Tigers would have defensive midfield plans, but needed to decide whether they implemented them straight away on Friday night or kept them up their sleeve.

"Whether it's Dangerfield, Selwood or (Mitch) Duncan, one of those guys will cop … I wouldn't say a tag but we'll try and limit their effectiveness as best we can," the coach said.

"A guy like Dangerfield, you can sit there and tag him and he can still have 25-30 possessions.

"So his effectiveness is probably the thing we monitor from that. He had a really good game last time.

"He had 21 contested balls, 17 pre-clearance, which is an enormous number. So we'll put some work into him, there's no doubt."

Hardwick said Cotchin and Selwood would cross paths in the midfield, while Dion Prestia shapes as a defensive option for the coach after strong run-with performances in the second half of the season.

Contested ball will be a key focus for the Tigers after they lowered their colours against the Cats in round 21, losing the key indicator 132-150.

"It's going to be a good midfield battle … I thought our guys were beaten in that area last time," he said.

"(Cam) Guthrie played an enormous game for them. (Sam) Menagola is in outstanding form, so their depth has certainly improved in that part of their game.

"We have also improved in that part of our game as well. It's going to be won and lost in there, most games are. We're making sure our boys play a better game than they did last time."

Title: Horror stats that Hardwick & Chris Scott will be trying to live down (H-Sun)

Revealed the horror stats that Damien Hardwick and Chris Scott will be trying to live down on friday night

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
8 September 2017

FINALS losses haunt your dreams.

After home-and-away losses there is usually a do-over seven days later but a finals loss can become a recurring nightmare.

Chris Scott and Damien Hardwick approach Friday night’s blockbuster hoping to exorcise finals demons.

For Hardwick the wait has been two seasons.

Alex Rance and the Tigers were wrecked by the Roos in their 2015 elimination final. Picture: Michael Klein

His side went into that elimination final against North Melbourne as a contested ball machine and came out obliterated by the Roos.

“I still remember that number — 33 — that number still haunts me,’’ he said months after that loss.

“We were ranked No. 2 in contested ball differential for the year and to have a number stick out like that at the end of the game was un-Richmond-like.”

Chris Scott’s number is similar, but for his club it was a statistical dominance that didn’t come close to transferring into a win.

In the 2016 preliminary final Geelong won the inside 50s 72-40 yet still had their pants pulled down by Sydney.

It is a stunning number that in every other game since 1999 — bar two — would have resulted in a win.

And yet Sydney smashed Geelong in close, kicked 7.2 to their five points in the first quarter, were 49 points up at half time and won by 37 points.

So Hardwick will test out a game plan he believes is built for September — frenetic tackling, quick ball movement, pressure and hunt the opposition.

Scott will see if a year tinkering with his forward line will be executed on the big stage.

Harry Taylor and Sam Menegola have gone forward, Tom Hawkins has roamed far and wide, Patrick Dangerfield has spent more time inside forward 50.

Instead of basking in his Brownlow Medal glow, Dangerfield even spent a summer learning to handball to running receivers rather than bludgeoning the ball forward.

Both clubs road test those changes knowing the winner has a foot in the Grand Final and the loser is likely to take on Sydney.

For Geelong, a straight-sets loser last year, and Richmond, having lost their past four finals, straight sets is a mighty ugly expression to consider.

Hardwick will know the Cats might attempt to shut down Trent Cotchin’s drive or limit the rebound of Brandon Ellis, as the Kangaroos did back in 2015.

After 16 possessions in the 2014 elimination final and nine in the 2015 version, Cotchin will come out breathing fire.

Do the Tigers try to free him up from a tag or let him work it out, do the Cats orchestrate Harry Taylor deep to get the Alex Rance match-up they loved in Round 21?

Can Richmond’s No. 1 ranked defence do what Sydney did last September and absorb the punishment then slingshot the ball into forward 50 again and again?

Footy asks so many questions of its players and coaches

How they answer them in September can be the different of a summer of deep slumber or more restless nights.

AFL footy fans to pack MCG for Richmond and Geelong clash amid tight security

Anna Prytz
Herald-Sun
September 8 2017

Footy fans will brave tight security, sodden weather and traffic snarls to be part of tonight's hotly-anticipated clash between Richmond and Geelong at the MCG.

More than 95,000 people, expected to be the biggest crowd of the year, will pack the iconic stadium for the AFL finals qualifying showdown.

Security will be tight as always with every attendee being scanned and all bags checked. Given the size of the crowd, fans should expect entry into the stadium to take some time.

MCC general manager Gerard Griffin said he was unapologetic about the stringent security measures and putting fan safety first.

"Across the 2017 AFL season these checks have successfully picked up countless items – including knives, box cutters and even a set of knuckledusters," he said.

What fans should definitely bring are warm clothes. There's possible hail forecast for this afternoon as well as possible showers tonight. The temperature won't climb above 14 degrees.

Gates open to the public at 5.30pm and people are urged to arrive no later than 6.30pm. The match kicks off at 7.50pm.

Anyone thinking of driving should probably think again. Parking will be heavily reduced in Yarra Park due to wet conditions.

The best public transport options to get to the MCG are the number 75, 48 and 70 trams and trains to Jolimont and Richmond stations.

Excitement (and nervousness) surrounding the all-Victorian stoush is already reaching fever pitch with fans taking to social media to cheer on their teams.

The long-suffering Tigers faithful, who have been waiting for a finals win since 2001, will gather at their Punt Road oval at 7pm to march to the MCG together.

One Richmond supporter who will not be attending is midfielder Dustin Martin's father Shane who had his visa cancelled by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton this week.

The game has been sold out for over a week but tickets are still available on the Ticketmaster Resale website for as much as $319. Ticket scalping has been an ongoing issue this season and fans are pushing for state government intervention.

We need to break the script of the recent years where Geelong would have a completely dominate patch in the midfield during the first half (thanks to us not turning up with the intensity required and playing crap :banghead ) and have a 4-5 goal burst and then we'd be forced to play catch up in the second half only to fall short by a couple of kicks. If we can be level or in front at half-time then that'll go a long way to winning tonight. Of course, we need to take our chances in front of the sticks when we get our opportunities and put scoreboard pressure on Geelong for once rather than playing catch up.

Good defensive pressure by us. Liking us trying to keep the ball in front of us with teammates supporting in the contest. Not being intimidated by Geelong or the finals atmosphere. Just need to eliminate the dumb schoolboy stuff (kicking into the mark, crucial fumbles) to make the most of our chances when we have the ball.

The worst thing about Broad there was the decision making. 30 secs to go with most of his teammates inside F50 set up for the long kick and he goes short with Geelong's forward half wide open :facepalm. It was just dumb dumb dumb! He had to go with the "safe" long kick to deny any chance of Geelong having time to run it up the other end to score.

Lambert and McIntosh the surprise packets so far. Both playing very well.

The main frustration is we haven't made the most of our chances. We should have nailed 3-4 of our set shots that we've missed. Caddy would be clear BOG if he had kicked straight.

I have been backing in Castagna to bounce back but he's been pretty costly tonight.
Out of form and overawed by the finals tempo. Inferred pressure and less time to think & act has got into his head and he's fumbled everything that has come his way and crucially when a clean disposal would set up a chance at goal by one of his teammates.

HALF TIME

Richmond leads by nine points at the main break.

The Tigers have dominated large parts of the first half but inaccurate kicking kept the Cats in it.

In fact, Geelong did not kick a goal until the 26th minute of the second term.

Matthew Lloyd said Richmond’s coaches should be encouraged by the early performance.

“Their effort and tackling pressure has been enormous,” Lloydy said.

“When they’ve got the ball they look dangerous… but their forwards have let them down.

“They way they’re using the ball going forward is the thing that’s hurt them.

“28 inside 50s to 19 – they should be much further in front.”

9 players tonight with between 2-50 games of AFL experience.

Had a chat to Finey. Love the way the guys are playing instinctive football and enjoying it too. This is the kind of momentum and spirit that won WB a flag last year.

And fmd it's good to watch. I just hope it's not a one off like with WB and this is instead the beginning of an era...

Geelong midfielder Scott Selwood says that his side had to significantly alter their gameplan for the venue of their losing qualifying final to Richmond on Friday night.

“We did have to alter stuff, but we thought we had the right structures and systems in place to do that and unfortunately we just couldn’t get it done.

“The width of the ground usually gets different teams. It’s a different sort of look. There’s bigger areas you need to protect in team defence and a lot more space in between contests when the ball was outside your area. You’re constantly looking at trying to squeeze the ground and trying to make it as short as possible.

“Richmond played it a lot better and knew it a lot better than we did.”

------------------------------------------------

Robbo:

1. CATS UNDER HEAT

It must be the blueprint: Pour on the pressure and the Cats are fragile with the pill. The Tigers pressure was through the roof on Friday night, recording a pressure factor of 209, their highest amount of pressure recorded since 2012. Once again, the Cats failed the test. They coughed up 68 points from turnovers, their most in a game this season, and recorded a kicking efficiency 48.9 per cent, their lowest efficiency ever recorded.

--------------------------------------------

Overall, Richmond players ran 4.85km further on the night and 1.65km more at high speed, at times making the Cats look slow.

Get ya hand off it Selwood...Geelong play at the MCG nearly as much as most of the Melbourne sides and more than Footscray & St.Kilda....

Doesn't really matter but he's sounding like a Cats fan - which they forget means at some point they end up at the G if they want to win the whole thing.
The AFL have already conceded that the H&A game would've been at the G but for our poor 2016 - so it's simply moot.
At 10 and 2, to their 3 and 3 our record at the ground stands up ok.

Geez Im loving the saltiness of Geelong as a whole - theyve played all of one final down at their goat track, and never had an issue playing finals at the G until now.

I really liked the fact that our senior players stood up when it counted. Their leadership was fantastic. When really stood out for me was in the third quarter Rance giving advice to Broad when Broad looked jumpy. Broad consequently settled down did a good pass to Vlas and the rest is history. I also really liked the fact that we turned out in massive numbers and made it a very hostile environment for Geelong.

The Tigers' stunning Friday night final quarter of 7.3 (45) against Geelong, which almost doubled their three-quarter time score of 46, was Richmond’s greatest fourth quarter in a final since 8.4 (52) in the 1980 Grand Final.

The Tigers pressure was through the roof on Friday night, recording a pressure factor of 209, their highest amount of pressure recorded since 2012.

Who was arguing with TM about Dimmas game plan in 2012 and earlier?

Was that the season average for 2012 though or just the season high?

What was our tackles average that year?

Scores from forward turnovers?

I loved this passage from Jack’s Mr Brightside book leading up to playing the Cats before the tremendous 2017 QF…thwack.
